Fighting Games Weekly | July 15-21 | Post-EVO Pillow Talk

Hey guys, I'm gonna be doing online tournaments for Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +, BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend, and Persona 4 Arena.

Hmm, you just reminded me of when I threw a SF4 tourney which gave away a copy of SFxT to both PS3 and 360 owners. And with USF4 on the horizon, I think I'll probably do it again. Since it's only $15 a piece I'll probably do a PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 tournament. At least it won't cost me $120 toal like it did last time lol. In order to win you'd have to have SSF4 AE 2012 in the first place to participate so I'm not buying boxed versions for the winners :p

That's because, in the current state of journalism, anyone can be a "journalist".

1) Receive a press release.
2) Copy-change the information.
3) Publish!

I know a girl who is a freelance food journalist. I don't know how much journalism actually goes on because all I see is a bunch of top 5 lists and restaurant round-ups. Her philosophy is that if the journalism thing doesn't work out, she'll go into restaurant PR. Says it all, really

I went 1-2 in injustice and 0-2 in marvel :( my first evo but im pretty disapointed in my performance . other than that though it was a really amazing weekend

from being able to talk to skizonic and ultradavid on thursday and having a fun convesation about Super Turbo, to playing KI to meeting Ed Boon and trying to convince him to put Plastic Man in injustice, to meeting Yipes on saturday to the amazing finals on sunday i cant stress enough how amazing this weekend was.

Stuff i noticed/happened/saw

Honzo is really short
Fchamp is really heelish arrogant in real life on thursday walking to the hall he told shady k imagine being a random scrub? i own this place.
Noticed how infiltration and laugh were never togtherer weird vibe
seth killian is the best dressed man in the fgc i wanted to ask him where he shoped for shirts
The cannons/markman/koogy/spooky busting their ass all weekend Mad respect to all of them. I wanted to say hi to koogy and markman over the weekend but didnt when i bought some stuff at BT booth Koogy wasnt there but mad respect to him.

Serious mad respect for James Chen. Before i left the venue on thursday i peeked into the main hall (people werent allowed on thursday) and i noticed James Chen going station to station checking for dlc/updates. James gets a lot of shit/hate for his commentary and i heard he got lots of hate for doing smash top 8 but after watching him do that on thursday i had a tremendous amount of respect for him. I saw him walk by on sunday during injustice grand finals when i was going to the wicked spoon buffet (big mistake by my part) and i wanted to say to him thank you for the work he put in this weekend.

the faces of rayray and Perfect Legend after they got eliminated. This is the type of stuff you dont see when you are just watching the stream. Both of them looked so sad. Especially Pl. He looked like in a fog. I felt pretty bad for them

Killer Instinct is good. Dive Kick is amazing. Im a convert i went from someone who thought it was dumb to someone who wants to buy it after playing it. I wish they were going to release a demo to convert people like me but who cares its awesome and ill be buying it when it comes out.

getting to see great Super Turbo action in the overflow room. If im able to go next year im definetly gonna play some ST.

seing fchamp super nervous during mvc semifinals late saturday. i was gonna get some water and he was with shady k and went and kinda cut infront of me getting water and i could tell he was tense/stressed i really thought then and there he wasnt gonna win evo this year.

being able to randomly see things like Nemos winners finals match in his pool vs ponce and losing or nemo playing vs alioune and llnd in casuals this is the kind of stuff you dont see at home

the magical top 8. ESPECIALLY justins run. When he beat chris the room exploded heck people started randomly hi fiving me and others. It was something else

seing mago and nemo almost miss their flight this morning. they were 10 min away form losing their flight. it was kinda funny to see

i could go on and on. Probably post stuff i didnt like next

Too bad he didn't check for Injustice or SFxT, lol.

Finally back, craziest weekend ever.

Wanted to check up with the finals footage and saw all the combo breaker stuff. There's a big reason you heard 'KAHMBOBREAKOOOOOOOOR' so much, and it's the huge skill gap between experienced players and developers.

You can visually pick up on which thing you need to break, especially if you've got a lot of experience. I started to get pretty good at it during the show, but holy god, when you watch the devs play, they're on a whole other level. They break shit non stop, mostly because they know what you want to do and can see it.

Breakers didn't nearly happen that often when I played other players, or when I saw Rich and other devs face off. I lean towards using the heavy-doubles a lot, as they do really good damage, but are easily breakable. Also didn't learn the timing for the medium-light stuff(which is harder to break). There was a few new mechanics at the show, and I was still wrapping my head around using them all to my advantage even on the last day. Either way, game is friggin crazy, but I heard a load of cheering from the audience for the moments that weren't combo broken. All the 'booing' was from them saying the game was only gonna be on Xbone. I hope they just do a PC release in the future.

Other than the final day, people were flipping shit playing KI at the madcatz booth. Was a lot of fun nostalgia bombing with everyone and going over strats.

Went 3-2 in Mahvel, got bopped by CJ Showstopper confirming into full kill combos with magneto off doom missiles, was nuts.

Either way, I ran into like 10 guys from Gaf it felt like, and literally hundreds of other folks. Dat Justin Wong factor.

When did they get to you, Max? :-(

btw who took out killasasa? i know he won his pool and then i heard nothing about him. i was hoping to see him on stream.

stuff i learned/other stuff/more stuff

seing arturos huge backpack/recording set up how the heck does he not have back pain after this weekend it was so huge and he was carrying it around everywhere

the smash community being the most hype during pools mad props to them

me going to the wicked spoon buffet after injustice top 8 was a mistake buffet was good but not great and i missed some of the top 8 of MVC

seing xian walking back from his top 8 KOF performance back to his hotel room in the flamingo with his TE stick and a huge looking drink in his other hand one of those novelty glasses people have in vegas only for him to win SF later that day what a baller.

the lack of casual set ups if im able to go next year im gonna bring my own for sure.

the quad hotel is awful dont think ill stay there next year unless its a last resort

there is special treatment for famous/pro players which i kinda didnt like. Saw one get 30 min plus in his injustice pool and not get dqd. And i got kicked out of the KI stations after finally winning a 2/3 set on sunday (after losing on fri-sat) but seing Rip and his buddy allowed to stay for a hella long time playing KI.

the grimeyness is also there. People tried to get in with badges from last year, people snuck into the main hallroom in the back without blue badges and a dude stole one of the kid robot SF statues while i was browsing the Focus Fire booth (I regret not picking i really wanted blue Guile)

there was lots of confusion in the hall rooms after the 2/3 to 3/5 change was made in MVC. I dont really think it should have been changed after the tourney started. Hopefully next year they go 3/5 from the get go.

Also theres no way in gods green earth SF X T is back next year. Top 8 was done to the side. A top 8 that had Infiltration and Justin and Alex Valle and yet it was done on the side stream while the main stage/and hype man were doing MVC3 top 32. I felt really bad for the competitors in the top 8 for SFXT because the crowd literally did not care and was not watching the SF X T top 8. That game isnt coming back next year. Bank on that.

Finally speaking of lack of hype injustice crowd was dead. Im guessing part because Smash was hype and part because that game is becoming superman vs superman fate of 2 supermans. But it was kinda suprising to see.

haha, I was the dude who did the glacius mirror match against you on Sat. The one who kept asking questions in line since I knew nothing about the game

PSN FGC GAF I have arrived for good. I'll do a short-ish write up about my EVO experience, but not right since I'm pretty tired from the trip back home...

My results were

Persona 4: 0-2
Marvel: 1-2
Skullgirls: 2-2
Divekick: Top 64

You can visually pick up on which thing you need to break, especially if you've got a lot of experience. I started to get pretty good at it during the show, but holy god, when you watch the devs play, they're on a whole other level. Yeah, I started doing that too. I saw my opponents doiing light linkers, I inmediately hit the light combo breaker. Not knowing the animations well except the really obvious lights threw me off quite a bit.

All the 'booing' was from them saying the game was only gonna be on Xbone. I hope they just do a PC release in the future.

Yeah, I seriously hope the same because I don't have any intention of getting the XBO but god damn it the game was fun.

Either way, I ran into like 10 guys from Gaf it felt like, and literally hundreds of other folks. Dat Justin Wong factor.

Sup man

Also, my pool was coincidentially right next to yours too :P

btw who took out killasasa? i know he won his pool and then i heard nothing about him. i was hoping to see him on stream.

Marvelo, I got to watch it live. Man, Sasa, my bro, I know you did your best but damn that was free.

Contrary to what stream chat would have lead you to believe, most people actually at Evo seemed to enjoy KI.

No one got to Max, Max got to them!

Seriously, playing the game at EVO only confirmed my biggest fear about it. I feared that it was actually pretty damn fun and it was damn it I don't want an XBO.

Hey guys for some odd reason I thought I posted in this thread instead of the USF4 thread lol.

Anyways, for all you Injustice players I just finalized the data for the SRK Injustice wiki. As far as I know, this is the most accurate frame data available and the only place to have 100% accurate string damage data (that I personally ground out and calculated.)

I'll be updating it as much as I can as new patches and characters arrive. If you guys see anything I'm missing or added in error please let me know!

Hey guys, I'm gonna be doing online tournaments for Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +, BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend, and Persona 4 Arena.

Eligible for North American PS3 players only.

It'll be a swiss tournament, going on for about a month.
Signups end about 2 weeks from now (tournament begins same day).
Haven't completely ironed out everything, but that's the basic gist of it (wanted to get this in the thread now, since more people are probably checking it out post Evo and all).

Send me a PM if you want to sign up.
Include your PSN and the games you want to play.

There'll different prize for each game.

For Persona 4 Arena, the Persona 4 Arena Original Design Works

For Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +, the Guilty Gear Isuka Original Soundtrack

For BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend, the Fraternity shirt from Brokentier

I'll make a thread next week, you can sign up there too, if you want, I guess.
And I'll post this in the games' official threads.

Can I enter all 3? :D
and lose all 3

I saw maximillian like 100 times but never said hi. :-(

I'm still in Vegas. Best evo for me yet. So many good matches. Pretty salty about how I played, but haven't really been practicing all year. Going to start trying to learn sf4 for real.

I heart the FGC. :-)

Evo being at ballys, but rooms at Paris was super whack, though.

I really hope I get to make it out to Evo next year. I honestly get jealous that people get to make it out to tournaments and stuff D:

According to James Chen is that EVO was suppose to happen in Paris ballrooms but they needed more space lead them going to Bally's.
It was P4A or Catherine and nobody was playing P4A
You could of asked me :P

Unless this was around that time you had no internet

Finally got Dante shot loops down! Don't know why I was having trouble with the timing before, it's not as bad as I thought. Now to use it in matches in get the fucking stinger follow-up down.

SF3: Third Strike is on sale for Xbox. It costs 300pts (less than $5)

Also Shuma and Jill DLC is on sale for 200pts each and the costumes are now 800pts

It'd be easier to read this if the frame data was combined with the moves list. As much as I love hitting the crap out of Nightwing's d1 I have no idea what the name for the move actually is.

I'll see what I can do to possibly change the formatting up a bit. Thanks for the suggestion.

That doesn't seem right. Halo 4 at Dallas had 40k concurrent viewers and that probably didn't have as much as Halo 3 at it's peak.

I doubt Halo 4 had that many. That was the pre release tournament where teams who had practiced with the leaked game had advantages over teams like Instinct right? I remember it having much less than that. And if it did have that many, it was probably due to a lot of casual Halo fans tuning in because the game wasn't released yet. In any case, Halo 3 did not have many viewers. Its why MLG never released concurrent viewership numbers and always released the total viewership numbers.

Sundance, Puckett, etc.. had always mentioned the small number of viewers Halo would get throughout the years. They did however mention that they would get plenty of competitors and spectators.

Just look at these past articles.

500,000 total viewers - Colombus 2009

http://espn.go.com/espn/thelife/videogames/news/story?id=4222274

750,000 total viewers - 2008

http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/mlg-works-with-hp-and-blizzard-entertainment-to-launch-mlg-pc-circuit-2

11,7 million total viewers - entire 2012 MLG season with PC games on board

http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/mlg-2012-season-generates-334-growth-in-live-online-viewers

Just look at Evo's 2nd stream which had low numbers compared to the 1st and 3rd Evo streams. 2nd stream had 4.7 million total views

http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/mlgs-live-online-broadcast-rivals-traditional-cable-networks-major-sporting-events-in-male-12-34-audience-2

270,000 unique viewers watching an average of 81 minutes. 360,000 hours of video consumed for not just Halo, but all games at MLG. If you have 30k concurrent viewers watching a stream for 10 hours, you get 300k hours of video consumed.

If you say Halo 3 had much more than 40k concurrent viewers, they should get much more than that much hours of video consumed considering that MLG runs for friday through sunday.

Finally, the competitive Halo community was never that big. The MLG playlist regularly only had 7k players at most and the mlg forums were much smaller than the FGC's shoryuken, eventhubs, fgc-gaf, etc... And I'm not even including international communities where Halo only had UK and Australia (both very very small communities) compared to the FGC international communities.

No way did they get more than 10k concurrent viewers.

also, f champ is pretty nice once you get to know him. which uh, will probably be never for 99% of the world. :<

EVO used the same stream accounts last year, irc, so the stream numbers should be cumulative instead of just from this weekend. According to the Destructoid article there were 1.7 million uniques this year for the 3 streams.

There you are! Dude, I need Dragon's Crown impressions. Just sayin~

I'm waiting for Elena and the return of TK Cannon Strike cheese to get back into SF4 :p

The last thing ill say is James Chen is totally right. Being in the main room during championship sunday Will change your life. Cant wait for 2014. Hope i can go again.

Haven't been to Evo, but I've been to three majors and the experience is definitely nothing like you can get on stream.
