20 Years LttP: Twin Peaks

God damn I just rewatched the pilot with my roommate who has never seen it. I'm in the mood again. :P

Honestly if I could choose to live in any setting from a show I would probably choose Twin Peaks. THOSE DOUGLAS FIRS!

Sorry for the double post, but dear god this show is excellent. I first watched it about 3 years ago , and rewatching it is nearly as good as the first time. We have the season 1 finale to watch and episodes 3-8 is some of the best television.

Triple post, BUT RELEVANT.

David Lynch To Ray Wise: “It Is Possible That We Could Revisit Twin Peaks”

eL3DXqH.png

At the Orange County Museum of Modern Arts’ annual “Art of Dining” gala on May 17 2013, David Lynch was honored for his important impact on the art world. Twin Peaks cast members Mädchen Amick and Lara Flynn Boyle attended the gala, and Ray Wise sat down with the director for several hours talking about “everything under the sun“. Including, yes, the possibility of a sequel to Twin Peaks. Here are David Lynch’s words on the topic, as paraphrased by Ray Wise:
“Well, Ray, you know, the town is still there. And I suppose it’s possible that we could revisit it. Of course, you’re already dead (…) but we could maybe work around that.“—David Lynch.

GRASPING FOR STRAWS

Lynch gotta Lynch.
It's funny, when vine came out I remember thinking that lynch would like it. It basically allows you to edit in camera while forcing your to shoot in sequence and under 6 seconds. useful, but also provides interesting constraints.
Amazing show. I saw it for the first time a few years ago and I was completely engrossed. Can't believe it's 20 years old.
23 now.

In the middle of the second season. This show is so weird. Especially the music. WTF was up with this scene? (spoilers i guess)

Literally just finished watching this show for the first time. This scene, oh my god, this scene. I have been watching most of this show by myself, and the first time I watched the show in front of my wife happened to be this episode. I don't think she'll ever let me live it down.

So this show, well, it sure was something else. I blew through it in about a week, so I certainly liked it enough to just keep watching them. I think on a whole I really like it, but there was so much I didn't like about it too. Most episodes are very slow, with subplots I cared little about, and many times it is just depressing.

The first season up to the murder reveal in Season 2 is all very good. Once that reveal happens though, like a lot of people have said on here, things go really down hill. Anything involving James after that point is tough. Nadine went from one of the least likable characters on the show to one of the least likable characters in all of TV history. Even Ben, who is generally awesome, has about 3 - 4 episodes where it's tough to even watch anything involving him.

I really love Cooper. He's gotta be one of the best characters on TV. Even though it could be depressing, I really liked the overall mood of the show. There isn't really anything else like it. Crazy that this show was not only able to exist on TV at the time, but that people actually loved the first season. It's so out there, I'm kind of amazed it found mainstream success.

It's a bummer that so many things are left unanswered now. I read that Fire Walk With Me has a few answers but that movie sounds super depressing. I'm not sure I'm up for it.

Oh, also my daughters are into the new Scooby Doo show on Cartoon Network. I've seen this episode a bunch of times but it of course clicked with me as to what it really is now

Crazy this show is still being referenced in pop culture over 20 years later.

Glad I watched it, even if I didn't love the majority of it.

Just finished watching the 2nd season and OMG! This show ended way too soon. I agree that the later half of the season two took a dive, but it was still fantastic.

Also, I just realized that this show is directly responsible for X-Files. I see Twin Peaks as the direct predecessor. The wikipedia article notes that netflix is interesed in re-booting the show. I think AMC would be a great network for that to happen after Breaking Bad ends.

Why isn't this the Twin Peaks |OT| yet?

Anyway...just finished the series for the first time tonight. This show was funny, heartfelt, sexy, disturbing, deep, vapid, grotesque, beautiful...lots of emotions and thoughts swirling around my head after that shocking last episode, so that'll have to do for now. My perspective of the show will likely become more eloquent the more time I'm given to reflect. I'll share a few disparate thoughts for now:

  • Dale Cooper is the greatest character in television. Fantastic performance.
  • Deputy Hawk is a badass.
  • Lucy and Andy are adorable beyond words.
  • Jack Nance (Pete) had the most personable, expressive face.
  • The first season was mostly flawless, except for the teen drama.
  • The second season suffered from a lack of focus after the pivotal development halfway through.
  • Like everyone else, I hated James and Donna.
  • Unlike everyone else, I thought the pine weasel scene was fucking hilarious.
  • Between Harry, Gordon, and Albert, Cooper has the best support system ever.
  • Windom Earle would have benefited from a later, slower reveal. He was a bit too hammy, IMO.
  • The conclusion
    makes my heart ache
    .

I have not watched FWWM yet, I plan to do so next weekend to allow the entirety of the series to sort of settle itself on me. Until then, a few questions. Can anyone shed some insight?

What was up with everyone's hand spasms in the latter half of season 2?

What was with the white horse that revealed itself to Laura's mother?

What was the deal with Josie Packard? Why did she shoot Cooper? Why did she only
weigh 65 lbs. when she died? What was her relationship to Bob?

Did Doctor Hayward kill Ben Horne?

Obviously I have a lot of other questions, but I don't assume many of them have concrete answers.

I still can't believe this was on tv. Just thinking back to the times this got aired over here, the popular stuff were Dallas, some german series, domestic series. Totally different league. Surreal.

also, JaseC, have you watched FWwM yet? :p

I watched Twin Peaks and Fire Walk with Me for the first time two years ago. It quickly became my favourite TV show ever.

I really want to revisit it, but I'm kind of scared of overwatching it as it's truly one of those shows you never want to ruin for yourself. It's just too perfect. I didn't have any qualms about the second season either.

All we need is for Lynch to revisit it. The final scene of the show haunts me to this day.
Oh and Fire Walk with Me is quite brilliant and nightmarish in my opinion.

It's been a while and some of those questions have never been answered but concerning the white horse...it is a common metaphor for drugs ("riding the white horse") but in this context, there is a
sexual connotation to it considering that every time she was drugged, her husband was raping his daughter.

Finally got around to getting past that Second Season Rough Patch. I'm glad I did. A few episodes after, I made it to the DEA agent part and that alone made it worth it.

The common theory -
She dreams about the white horse whenever Leyland is 'doing the business' because he's drugging her with heroin to cover it up. Part of why she's so spaced out all the time in the show.

I've been watching this just started the second season it's pretty entertaining. Hope it stays up on Netflix for a little while longer!

Just finished season one and I'm sad I didn't watch this sooner...

The female cast was incredibly attractive. So sad what Lara Flynn Boyle did to her face. A lot of people don't like Donna, but I feel she just gets dragged down because of her association with James. I like Donna.
BUT OMG AUDREEYYYYYY. Best character of the show, IMO. Yes, even above Cooper.

So I'm watching this for the first time and last night saw Season 2 Episodes 6 and 7.

MAJOR SPOILERS

I really liked all the revelations. The final reveal was extremely tense, with a brilliant score. I like that it's all gone overtly supernatural. None of the characters really seem to react to this, which is part of the weird charm. When Mike was explaining who he and Bob were, no one really batted an eyelid at all. Then again, I remember the line from Season 1 about how people have got used to their being dark things in the woods.

I wonder if Laura knew this 'Bob' she was seeing was pretty much inside her father. And I like that her dad's line from early in Season 2 about remembering Bob watching him when he was younger suddenly seem really creepy. Does he actually know this thing is inside him? I guess not.

One question about the Gold DVDs. Each episode has an optional 'log lady intro'. What are these? Should I be watching them? I've been avoiding them because the set doesn't explain where they come from and I was ultra afraid of spoilers.

Some of that is answered in later episodes, some of that is answered in the film, in ways which likely contradicts itself a little.

The Log Lady intros were made for a rebroadcast, not from the original showing. They're purposely weird/odd & not-essential IMO.

Donna was quite cute, but like Audrey she became useless in the 2nd season.
She was actually pretty useful at the beginning and distanced herself a bit from James, but things turned so stupid after the funeral. She has one of my favorites in the series.
When did you get so stressed? When I started smoking.
Kinda dumb but delightfully so.

So last night, I watched s2, episodes 8-10. Haven't got to a big drop in quality yet. Everyone saying to just watch the first 7 episodes of season 2 should at the very, very least include 8 and 9 as well. Of course, from 11 onwards it could be terrible. But the downgrade definitely hasn't happened yet and it's still mostly been heavily focussed on the Laura story.

BIG SPOILERS

So I know most things about Laura, Leland and Bob now. I'm still intrigued by who Laura was actually seeing. The reported conversation from James early in S2 definitely implies she was actually going around with Bob, with no sign she saw Leland. And her diary saying she was suddenly "onto" Leland/Bob implies she must have not known they were the same at one point. From what I've just read about "Fire Walk With Me", it would have to made clear in that. And Mike, I think, said 'savants' (think that's the word he used) could see Bob as he really was, and Laura is very interestingly portrayed as some sort of mix of "whore" and savant.

The only time the tone seems to have gone out of the window is that sports scene with the eye-patch lady. That was odd! But generally by episode 10 it's still fine. And 10 establishes the whole 'where is Bob now?' question and sort of implies he's killed or taken over the guy Cooper is fishing with. That's the last cliffhanger I saw, so I don't know.

I like that the main arc is sort of Jacob and the Man in Black from "Lost".

Oh, where is Lucy's accent from exactly? As someone who knows nothing of American accents, I've never quite heard anything like it.

Two episodes from the end! I will order FWWM today.

BIG SERIES SPOILERS

Really loving it - the Black Lodge / White Lodge thing is a second very interesting, spooky supernatural mystery. It's like after floundering quite a bit, they've found something to replace the Laura mystery. And it's good to see the previous cliffhanger bring Bob back into the world! The show is clearly at its best when it's juxtaposing really OTT soap with supernatural darkness. And again, the mysterious cave that has a route to another realm very much seems a template for Lost, much like the Bob/Mike struggle is.

I'm surprised, though, that the Network forcing them to reveal Laura's killer led them to go so much further than just this, in having Bob outed to the other cast and then killing Leland. It's like they reacted to the network's interference by removing everything about that story. They could have got at least a couple more episodes out of Leland avoiding everyone's attention.

Also never seen it, but now I have Netflix I intend to fix that. Don't fail me GAF.

Also I'm a huge of fan of Link's Awakening and when I read this, it just confirmed I had to finally sit down and watch it:

Tezuka intended the game's world to have a similar feeling to the American television series Twin Peaks, which, like Link's Awakening, features characters in a small town. He suggested that the characters of Link's Awakening be written as "suspicious types", akin to those in Twin Peaks

Started watching this a few years ago on Netflix. I loved the first season, but when I started the second season and it got all supernatural and shit I dropped it. I don't mind the crazy supernatural stuff when it's presented upfront (fringe), but when halfway through the series suddenly the first episode of season 2 happens the disconnect is too much. A shame though, because I really enjoyed S1.

One of the odder reactions to Twin Peaks I've seen, but to each their own. It's pretty eerie and supernatural from the beginning, the supernatural elements definitely grow but the beginning of s2 isn't a jarring tonal shift. For a tonal shift you need to get to the second half of s2.
