Essential Anime Movies/TV shows over the past 20 years?

As the thread title says. I have seen movies like:
Akira
Perfect Blue
Most of the Ghibli movies

But I'm out of touch for the past I'd say 20 or so years.

What are must watches?

Doesn't have to be Japanese or American movie either. I've loved Persepolis.

That "over the past 20 years" made me realize I mostly watch old stuff. :goog_relieved:

If you don't mind me recommending you old stuff, I loved Legend of Galactic Heroes. Show's full of politics, military tactics, social commentary, honor, brotherhood, friendship and all that jazz. There's a remake but I prefer the old one, they fucked up the character designs in the new one.

If that sounds boring the series also has it's fair share of action. Most of it are space battles but there's also some melee skirmishes that push the violence dial up to eleven. Thing is their space suits reflect shots, so they duke it out with battle axes. Cool shit.

A few I've liked

FMA Brotherhood
Fate Zero (the rest of the fate franchise sucks though)
Steins:Gate
Code Geass
Bacanno
Gurren Lagann
Samurai Champloo
Mob Psycho 100
Psycho Pass (mostly just Season 1 though)
Vinland Saga (only read the manga, but I've heard the anime is a good adaptation)
Golden Kamuy (same as Vinland Saga)
Frieren

Movies:
Sword of the Stranger (cool animation and music)
Redline (insane animation)
Your Name
Paprika

Non Japanese Stuff:
Arcane
Avatar The Last Airbender (more for a younger audience, but still fun for all ages)
Scavengers Reign (got cancelled but S1 works well as a standalone)
Bojack Horseman
Pantheon (the animation is kinda bad, specially in S1, but I like the concepts and story).

About anime movies:

Satoshi Kon - You watched Perfect Blue, he has another good ones like Paprika.

Mamoru Oshii - Ghost in the Shell 1995, Patlabor 1 & 2 and Jin-Roh. Angel's Egg is artistic but is more a small OVA than a movie.

Yoshiaki Kawajiri - Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and Ninja Scroll. Wicked City is also cool but not as good.

Cowboy Bebop The Movie is great and Redline is high octane fun. I'm not that a fan of CGI but Gantz O is awesome.

You mean popular and/or generally well received, right? Death Note, Attack on Titan, FMA brotherhood, Jojo, Hunter Hunter remake, Steins Gate, Mushishi, Your Name (movie).

20 years is a lot of time. You can probably get 50-100 recommendations.

Old more than 20yo. Good movies though.
Most of everything I've watched or collected is nearly 20 years or older. That reminds me Aeon Flux anime, digimon first movie, and I can't believe I've forgotten to mention like my favorite anime movie Summer Wars.

edit: the boy and the beast and Belle is also good.

Violet Evergarden. The 13 episodes series and "The movie" for an epilogue.

I cried at almost each episode. Slice of life style anime but really well done and it gets quite emotional. And the animation and art are off the roof.

I didn't like Vinland Saga at all. The plot holes make it unwatchable for me.
I'm I supposed to believe that a group travels together for a long time, they all know one wants to kill the other, and NOBODY in all that time asked him "why"?
And many other annoying things...
