Who else was bothered by the fact that the Chinese team didnt get to say one word?! For a movie set in HK, there was definitely a dearth of Chinese speaking characters.

edit: I guess they had 1 whole line.

just got back, im dead

apocalypse cancelled

cant believe this is a thing they made and it gave me hope for the world

im pretty sure if I saw this as a kid I would have had a heart attack and not need any more sugar for years

One of them had a brief line while they were in the water. I can't even remember what it was though it went by so fast, ahah.

Edit: beaten.

"It's on our right!" is another line. :P

They said thunderdunk formation go.

they also said movement! 3 o clock in chinese
i only heard the 3 o clock though
oh and after the 1st raleigh and mako pilot testing where she chased the rabit, when raleigh walks into the canteen i think one of the 3 said 什么东西 which literally means what is this? but i think in this case is basically saying how useless raleigh and mako were

and i'm still pissed i got the stupid dubbed version for mako's japanese lines

this movie needed more action and less "mako!!!"... this whole movie was really a homage to giant robot animes. The action scenes made me smile :)

So I'm back from the 2nd viewing, and you know what random thing I want in the sequel if it ever happens?

The doctors in a Jaeger.

They can drift, right? STICKEMIN

They can be so incompetent they win. Makeithappencapn

The movie was visually gorgeous and the sense of weight for both the mechs and the monsters were captured perfectly. Sure, the characters were pretty cliché and the story wasn't very involving, but the movie clearly aimed to be an entertaining and fun summer action flick and I think it succeeded wholeheartedly.

They had around 2 lines. One was "3 o'clock" for positioning of kaijus.

EDIT - Actually they also said the name of whatever formation they normally used in the Crimson Typhoon.

Hopefully this is a better time to post this.....

This movie has so many lost opportunities, I do not know where to start.

If you are making a film with one of the purposes to pay loving homage to the Japanese, why not feature an actual Japanese Jaeger? In fact, why not make it one of the primary protagonists? It is beyond odd that of all the nations participating in it, Japanese Jaegers don't even get a cameo in it.

Of all the quixotic, befuddling, to outright outrageous tropes they could have pulled and borrowed from mecha animes, the most nifty feature they managed was a switchblade sword? Even the missiles tubes and rocket arms were pedestrian. I was expecting giant laser turrets, energy lances, assault rifles the length of aircraft carriers, missile tubes capable of hundreds of launches, etc.

The Chinese and Russian ones were taken out too fast. In fact, there should have been more Jaegers from other nations, such as Mexico, Canada, etc. They would have been invaluable in the final assault, when we could have an excuse for an utterly unleashed combined arms and team based battle. Think 7-8 Jaegers battling 4-5 Kaijus, with the Jaegers working desperately together in complementary ways. Another missed opportunity.

The most gaping wound in the film is the dumbfounding cast inversion regarding Raleigh and Mako. The Japanese actress, Rinko Kikuchi, maintained a steely, mature exterior even during the most harrowing parts of the film. Her moments of ostensible emotional vulnerability are completely ineffective, and in fact seem to call out just how opposite her actual personality is. By her very nature she should have been the battled hardened, zen composed mentor and master, not Raleigh. Raleigh, on the other hand, is the one who's words can never stray from being the most grating one in the room, and his tone drips with impetuousness and brashness. He should have been the one having personal demons and doubts. A much better alternate setup should have been Mako being the experienced battlemaster piloting the Japanese Jaeger (with another Japanese actor), one of the most powerful in the force, and Raleigh the arrogant and talented rookie who can't maintain his pose early on, thus being kicked out. The film's climax could have then pivoted to Mako's partner being killed, and forced to take on Raleigh on board the Japanese Jaeger, with a bitter ensuing struggle as cross cultural dialogue initially fails. However, both characters could have then learned from each other and both taken a step backwards to accept each other, and Mako being the one to expose Raleigh's past sins and fixing them. Raleigh learns to redeem himself, and finally achieves his potential while Mako learning to accept him as an equal after mentoring him. The final victory would have been so much more fulfilling and triumphant than the anemia we have now.

As an aside, Mako would have been better off speaking in Japanese with Raleigh pretending to understand her

Coyote Tango was in the Mako flashback scene.

Tacit Ronin gets a very brief cameo (only a few seconds at best) when Raleigh is giving the backstory of humanity fighting back against the kaiju. It's easy to miss though, I didn't even realise it was a unique Jaeger due to how blink-and-miss it was.

Coyote Tango, the Jaeger Pentecost piloted in Mako's memory, is also a Japanese Jaeger.

I'm guessing Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon, <3 :(, were "cut" early for budgetary reasons? I don't see any point to their deaths at all unless they couldn't afford to animate all 4 separate Jaegers.

how do you see no point to their deaths? whole film is trying to set up a desperate situation and reacting to it, it gives the film urgency. Kaijus aint fuckin around

They just didn't seem to do anything, both their deaths felt completely cheap except maybe Cherno's who was flanked, the acid sack reveal here was interesting though. Crimson Typhoon just walked up to the other one, tried cutting him, and had his head ripped off and a chest damage.

Then they were like oh fuck let's send in Gipsey to clean up the trash. And then Gipsey took them all out by itself and Striker Eureka was mostly undamaged, which I find this very odd that the Kaiju didn't rip it to shreds in this opportunity.

Edit: also, if I have anything wrong let me know. I was pretty exhausted when I watched the movie and even a day after watching it I can barely remember it because I was so tired.

If we don't get a sequel it will bug me for the rest of my life. I loved every minute of this movie.

I see the cameos regarding the Japanese Jaeger now. But a cameo is still doing it a grave disservice. Even the Chinese and Russian Jaegers get more screentime. I wonder why.

Once the EMP went off Eureka wasn't a threat so not entirely surprising it didn't get smacked about.

Did the monster even use the EMP again after that one time? They came up with some nonsensical excuse for why it wouldn't work on on Gypsie, but then I don't recall it ever trying to use it.

I think we only would have gotten that if they omitted the scene where its established that Gipsy can't be EMP'd. Would have made sense, but might have been a bit redundant.

gipsy danger was totes analog

and also a bomb that explodes when it melts?

honestly im surprised there werent more "plot holes" of this sort. I was okay with the whole thing and the silly explanations

First thing Gipsy did was rip off the part that had the EMP. Just like it ripped out the sack that had the acidic from the one it fought in Hong Kong.

Huh, I didn't notice that Gipsy removed the EMP organ; that's pretty cool.

Leatherback is still my favorite Kaiju. I love how much of a sadistic prick it is when it's playing with Striker Eureka.

Hopefully this is a better time to post this.....
What was wrong the last time you posted it?

I watched it today and really enjoyed it. The plot and characters were typical blockbuster fare, but the action was tense and felt like a more adult Saturday morning cartoon.

Also, why didn't the Gipsy use the sword from the beginning? Once it pulled it out, it took care of that Kaiju immediately. I was also surprised at the lack of weaponry in the Jaegers. Most of the fighting was just fisticuffs. Use those rocket pods/lasers/energy beams.

The sword was one of the new upgrades.

Was the sword designed to cauterize wounds? If not, it makes sense it was only used in the air and underwater to avoid splattering acidic kaiju blood around populated areas.

Otherwise, rule of cool.

Guillermo Del Toro to pilot Matador Fury single-handed in the sequel CONFIRMED.

Believe.

No explanation given. In order to make it make sense, we can assume that the "lock" was only to keep things coming back from the other side, not to stop outgoing traffic.

Pretty much. I can't imagine why the invaders would put too much thought into preventing humans from leaving their domain.

actually it was charging it while it was also charging gypsie you can see the electricity on its back, then gypsie ripped it off.

I wonder how they came up with the idea of the wall. Watching it built just looked like a wide wall. Didn't look strong at all.

As others have said, I believe that the wall was more of a political move rather than a practical one. With Jaegers falling left and right, the people needed a new hope to cling to and the wall provided that. If we apply logic to it, the whole plan was completely flawed, but this is a movie after all.

I doubt it's a reference, though it still could be given del Toro's love of Japanese culture, I chuckled at the wall keeping out gigantic creatures since I keep up with Attack on Titan.

They had the nerdy guy looking for his glasses meme instead. And it was hilarious.

I would have loved an Itano missile circus.
