760 die in UK heat wave (mostly under 90°), because only 0.5% of them have AC

Why cant some people seem to grasp the idea that people from another country who very fucking rarely get this kind of heat don't take to kindly to it?

I'm sure if I grew up in some of the hotter places in the States and in Australia I'd probably be used to this kind of weather.

I'll just keep rolling my eyes at some of ignorant shit that keeps getting posted.

Bro, I was on holiday on Mercury last year and I didn't even sweat and still hit the gym and I got some bitches too. Weak sauce dudes, you're just weak sauce.

While youre rolling your eyes at ignorant americans and australians make sure you also roll your eyes at those ignorant enough to not heed the health hazards/heat warnings issued by your government

Why should I feel sorry for people who didn't pull on their bootstraps hard enough to move to places with more mild climates?

It's called personal responsibility folks.

With the heat that Europe has been experiencing in summers lately, I don't think it would be a bad idea to buy a portable/indoor AC unit. They aren't expensive and they are very energy efficient now.

Yikes, that sucks. Probably cost cutting measures?

A bit of that. I'd also wager that shops and shopping centres that have the AC on low is to make you buy more. (You don't think as well when it's hot, and it makes you more likely to buy cold drinks. Genius, in a really shitty way, I suppose.) All around, it really sucks. :(

Yeah those stupid dead old people, lol what idiots.

Why weren't they checking weather warnings online and going out and buying aircon and going to the pool to cool down. What muppets.
/sarcasm

There is another reason for the lack of AC in the Uk and that is cost. Electricity bills in the UK are insane. Having said that so is all the other utility bills. Bloody stupid privitisation.

Like...er...the UK? We probably have the most mild climate on the planet, every day is 7 degrees. Apart from this summer.

I've been to Florida during a heat wave and the temperature was something in the hundreds and this weather is nothing compared to it. The Americans saying that a lot of people here are just complaining are right. Although it is understandable that old people with nothing to cool them with are going to have a tougher time than us fit kids.

So, they can only get weather warnings online? What about the newspaper? Television? You dont need to go to the pool or buy an aircon to survive 30° temps. Drink plenty of Water, wear light cotton clothing, open a window/door. Its not rocket science

He's joking, 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' is a joke phrase Americans like to say to excuse not helping all the homeless mentally ill people who wander their streets

Thats really sad to hear. mostly elderly people i guess. i'm on the east coast of Ireland here which is 100 miles across the ocean from the Uk so we get similar weather. Yesterday was our hottest day at 31C and it is just horrible. ,We're not used to this kind of weather. It really is'nt comfortable. i always preferred winter as a season anyway but this is seriously taking the piss. It has'nt been cold for the past four weeks. I don't remember what it feels like.

Three people jumped under the tube on Friday when it was particularily hot. All different lines too, all of London was fucked.

You get that old people die right? Well hot weather makes it more likely.

It's not like there are many 25 year olds dropping dead on the streets.

While the elderly are disproportionately affected by heat waves, it's not a "they were going to die anyway" situation--were it, it would be expected that after the heat wave is over mortality would drop corresponding to those who would have died dying earlier, but no such drop is visible. Moreover, differences in emergency preparedness and government response account for massive fluxuations in heat-wave deaths (see also the 95 Chicago heat wave versus subsequent Chicago heat waves)

Not surprised, it's hot. Do find it laughable how many people are confused by the fact we are accustomed to a different climate..

I'd love to read the book you posted. It should be criminalized not having an electronic version of good books!

My grandfather and his wife, who are vacationing in the UK right now, are returning to the U.S. a week early because of the heat.

Which I don't understand, because it's hotter here than it is there. But they are senile old people, so whatever.

It's much hotter in France than the UK right now but I bet it feels a lot hotter in the UK due to the humidity.

You need to be told it's hot in order to realize it's hot outside? Da fuck? If you feel hot you drink extra water, I thought this was common sense.

Dat weird Euro attitude towards some technologies. Same with driving stick in 2013 ...
And I doubt climate warming is going to change people's opinions about AC because someone would immediately point out the high power usage that causes even more climate warming, that requires even more power, that ... totally vicious cycle.

I live in Scotland where hitting 30 degrees is far less common than places like London and I've been loving it. It's been hot as hell in my office which hasn't been particularly pleasant but I'm determined not to complain since I've been enjoying my evenings so much. I can totally get why some people hate it when it's so alien in the context of our everyday lives and outwith foreign holidays.

Manual >>>> automatic. Fact.

I'm on my phone so links aren't exactly working. So people dying in 90 degree weather is common?

It happens in any country where the heat suddenly reaches levels people aren't accustomed to. Including america by the way. What the exact temperature is isn't all that relevant and theres other factors involved. But I get it, you're a tough guy here to gloat.

Just as many people died in Chicago due to that heat a few years back. Thought they would have air-con....

I have family in Chicago. 90 degrees is not "heat wave" in Chicago. It's probably near that right now. If you are talking about the incident in the 1990s, IIRC it reached 105 or something like that.

It hit 104f here back in 2003. 2000 people died in this country in heat-wave attributed incidents.

15000 died in France
13000 died in Spain

They are countries who experience hotter temperatures in the Summer too. Guess that they should have air-con I guess. But I guess the article didnt want to go back that far.

The UK media needs to do some good old fashioned public shaming of people that didn't check on their elderly relatives during this heat wave. The same way the American media publicly shames people that leave infants/dogs in a car during the summer days.
