760 die in UK heat wave (mostly under 90°), because only 0.5% of them have AC

Dat weird Euro attitude towards some technologies. Same with driving stick in 2013 ....

lol

My last car was an automatic. What a pile of shit that is. Glad to be back with a manual.

Regardless, so much naivety and ignorance in this thread. Easy for people to judge a country when they live thousands of miles away from it.

The UK media needs to do some good old fashioned public shaming of people that didn't check on their elderly relatives during this heat wave. The same way the American media publicly shames people that leave infants/dogs in a car during the summer days.
This reminds me of heat wave that killed load of elderly in France a few years back in an August.

Eh, we Canadians buy AC for our humid summers despite

As much as I'd like to see that, there are also plenty of elderly who dont have any direct relatives around them, or have family that do not live locally.

There has already been plenty of news articles and features about the amount of neighbours and social services carers who have gone to help the aged people who dont have anyone checking up on them.

I'm from the southern US and i am in Scotland right now... the way ive seen people react to this weather is humorous to say the least.

One reason is that air-conditioning is relatively rare in England. Only 0.5 percent of homes in the U.K

UK = England now? -_-

But yeah, many of us aren't exactly used to this heat. Luckily, I do have an air con in here and another fan which is useful since heat gathers inside here quick enough.

Actually ACs are much unhealthier for the human body than the "heat" itself.
They bomb you nonstop with bacteria and are really bad for your respiratory, skin and especialy eyes.
the (most of the time) tremendous difference between outdoor temperature and indoor temperature is hell for the circulatory system

It was a joke, maybe it was too complex.

And what ignorance is there from the UK right now? Or are you just all riled up?

Thought I already covered this, but I'll repeat. People allowing their newborn child to be badly burned after leaving them in the sun during a heat wave. People not checking on their old, senile, ill family members during a heat wave, because they chose not to listen to the warnings. A half million people going to the hospital for avoidable heat-related health issues. The guy who brought up wooden houses not withstanding a natural disaster after I just used it as an example of typical European ignorance in US weather threads.

I'm on my phone so I can't easily quote him, but he asked for an explanation. As an example, we had an EF3 tornado that hit my neighborhood in May. Generally the same or higher wind speeds than a hurricane. Once in a lifetime thing for us, definitely nothing we were prepared for, and we're still in the clean up process almost 2 months later. We have a mix of brick and "wooden" homes in the area. Tons of damage from trees, debris, and straight up wind, but the houses that were completely destroyed literally exploded from the pressure. They wouldn't have survived regardless of material. And the recent Oklahoma tornadoes were EF5s, much stronger, larger storms. They actually warn that brick homes can be more dangerous, because the materials are heavier, can crush more, can collapse a basement or shelter, etc. Brick sounds great in theory but its still not going to stand up against those winds and can be more deadly. Same with basements/shelters. While they are critical in saving many lives, they can also be what kills when they flash flood during these storms and you're trapped under tons of rubble.

Let's just agree that we're ALL ignorant and carry on then. ;)

This 10 page thread just comes down to a fact that a lot of people cant get that a much needed necessity in one country is just a mostly unneeded luxury in another.

Some of us have top isolation though. I can keep the heat out during afternoon without problem./QUOTE]

Pretty much this. I live in a Victorian-era home and it's the worst at keeping heat and cold air out. I have all new windows and doors, so at it's much better than the original features, but brick and plaster walls aren't terribly good at insulating a home.

So I can imagine, lots of old homes in the UK trap a crap ton of heat and humidity. I wonder what the humidex ratings are over there right now? In Montreal, we had a heat wave for a couple of weeks and it was over 40 degrees. You'd start sweating in a minute, just from all the moisture in the air.

I know it's a little off topic, but I just googled the weather for NYC. Looks like NYC is the most miserable place on earth right now.

That is why I hardly wear any clothes during the Summer. Beaterand shorts now. Hell, I might get naked. I bet you are turned on now.

Britian really has a high population to explain all those deaths.

Aren't there any American bases on Antarctica, though?

Then again, they're probably scientists so they're using real units...

I'm English, living in Minnesota and the heat is fucking unbearable. I can't walk out of my apartment without pit stains.. I much prefer the cold

Dat weird Euro attitude towards some technologies. Same with driving stick in 2013 ....

Europeans favour some modicum of fuel economy over "aahhh gahht maa truk" V8 4L juice chuggers. Popping an auto transmission in there just makes it even worse. The UK at least has a Tax which all cars must have and the fee per year is dependant on how much carbon the car makes which is higher with a traditional auto. There is then 60% Tax on Fuel as well.

It's much better with the more modern double clutch autos, but most automatics are still slush type.

I have a double clutch auto and will never go back to a manual.

It's pretty muggy, but at least it's below 90. Go swimming. It's about the only bearable activity when it's like this.

For the benefit of Americans, generally speaking Europeans view anyone who has an automatic car as a scrub.

This may not be the weather Europeans want, but with comments like this, maybe it's the weather they deserve. Some of you are so smug. Go check on some elderly people. It's hot outside and with no AC they may need your help.

Is it a surprise? Some Europeans here do it all the time with Americans, especially with politics, when they don't know the culture here.

Anyway, it's a pity this has happened. Where can people buy AC units in UK? Amazon??

And manual cars suck, imo. I've tried getting used to them and I just don't like them. Waste of my time and focus to think about changing gears.

Come on now, no need for that. That comment may have been a bit rude but theres some truth to it. Most people don't want automatics. It's not like we don't have the option to buy them.

I don't see why we need to turn this into a competition. Ignorance isn't a trait reserved to any one country. I'd hope everyone understands that.

Dat weird Euro attitude towards some technologies. Same with driving stick in 2013 ...

Seriously? Do you really think it's old tech to drive stick? Holy shit.

And I doubt climate warming is going to change people's opinions about AC because someone would immediately point out the high power usage that causes even more climate warming, that requires even more power, that ... totally vicious cycle.

You're saying that global warming isn't something that concerns AC owners, because ACs make global warming? Not only do those not relate, or make sense, but there's a lot of other things that's wrong with that statement.

There's probably a lot of truth in what I'm saying too. Have a single one of you gone out of your way to check on your neighbors/family/friends etc. especially elderly/pets. My guess is most of you are glued to a PC posting how hot it is on GAF.

As far as the automatic vs manual in the US automatic vehicles are more widely available than manuals. Kind of like AC in the being available in the UK. It's there, but it's not as common.

Unbelievable. Yes I have thank you, that guess is pretty insulting. Funny how this thread was made to troll people in the uk and it's ended up provoking posts like this. Calm down, theres shit being flung both ways here.

It happens in any country where the heat suddenly reaches levels people aren't accustomed to. Including america by the way. What the exact temperature is isn't all that relevant and theres other factors involved. But I get it, you're a tough guy here to gloat.

We know it happens here in America too, the difference is we're not making excuses. If you are not bed ridden or chronically ill a heatwave shouldnt kill you, especially not a 30° heat wave. The temperature most certainly is relevant.
If I died of hypothermia because it hit 8°c you guys would be just as incredulous and in disbelief that id allow that to happen to myself and shame on me if I were to allow that to happen but then again id be dead so whatever lol!

no, we'd think it was pretty sad you got to that stage

don't know why you think this is a UK vs US pissing contest, obviously couldn't look passed OP's headline

Do you do that? Or do you just sit at home glued to your PC talking like a dick?

Well to be fair I said "a lot" and never specifically accused you so I'm not sure what you're insulted about.

It's not making excuses, it's trying to explain it. If you're really interested you should read the whole thread. Smarter people than me have done a better job already.

Well to be fair I said "a lot" and never specifically accused you so I'm not sure what you're insulted about.

Exactly how I felt about you calling people losers and accusing posters here of neglect because of a harmless jab about car transmissions.

I'm not in a country hot as balls with the majority of people without AC, but in events of power outages from storms yeah I check on neighbors who are older. It's okay man, I'm not judging you.

might as well not have said anything at all then

I could quote quite a few things you could've kept your mouth shut on in this thread.

I've noticed walking around today that grass is dead everywhere, and a lot of trees aren't doing too well. Our plants must be pussies as well.

Also the only automatic vehicle I've ever driven was a go-kart. But then again I like actually driving, so I'll stick with a manual.

go on then, at least then I'd know you've read the thread

Lol. Well if will help you sleep better. Here's a nice example of your smug ass posting. I don't appreciate being generalized as an idiot no more than any of you like being told that you're sitting in front of a PC not giving a shit about people in need around you. So if you'd like to quit the tit for tat bs. We could maybe get on topic to how I actually feel bad for you guys having no AC. It doesn't have to be a US vs Euro slap fight.

It's almost like our roads are laid out differently. Dat American idiocy.

Exactly how I felt about you calling people losers and accusing posters here of neglect because of a harmless jab about car transmissions.

I do apologize about the accusations. I do have to say it's more than just comments about transmissions or C vs F. It's the general superiority complex "some" posters try and demonstrate referring to americans as idiots and what not.

Lawns tend to die if you don't water them in the summer.

No it doesn't have to be, but that's how it started and that's how people are willing to play to game. As for my post, you'll see I was replying to a very specific post from one poster. I worded my reply precisely because of that. If he hadn't generalised all Euros, I wouldn't have generalised all Americans.

Why do you need an air conditioner if you have maybe 1 or 2 very hot weeks in non Mediterranean Sea European countries?
Espencially if you live in one of the modern/modernized buildings, with the right building insulation.

It's only interesting for old and weak people.
