Because of this thread, I started up a new game of nethack for the first time in months.
Damnit. I was just starting to get productive again.

If it comes out in English then the Samurai Warriors 2 HD Collection is a really good group of games.
- 2+XL may be missing characters, spirit dash and Ultimate Musou attacks from 3, but it has a lot of good stories and I found Mercenaries Mode to be really enjoyable. Oh and- SW2 Empires is tied with DW5E as my favorite English released Empires game (if only DW7E had a free mode like these didI have spent more time than I'm willing to admit playing Sugoroku.).
Picked up Warriors Orochi 3.
Then, once DW 8 drops in price a bit, I will pick that one up.
This should be good. Thanks for all the advice, and starting the thread.
Oh and lastly, I know its not a popular opinion but, if you are interested in the Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage games, I'd recommend 1 over 2. While 2 added a bunch of characters and covered the whole story, the gameplay was dumbed down far too much for my tastes. 1 may have had slower gameplay, but far more combat options that led to it being a deeper and more enjoyable combat engine.
Is Sengoku Basara 3 Utage significantly better than the vanilla English version? If so, is the language barrier significant?
Thanks for all the recommendations. Leaning towards SB3 but now I'm kinda feeling like just picking up DW8 haha.
Is there really a best Musou? It's the same game with a different skin on it. They are all mediocre mindless hack and slash. Just pick a theme you like, and you will probably like that one the best.
Hm, honestly, I like SB3 as much as the next person (and am still hopelessly waiting for Utage to come over), but that series would be kind of a weird one to jump into without previous Musou experience. SB3's combat is a step above what you find in the Warriors games (due to individual character gimmicks that make them a smidge more complex in comparison), but everything else beyond that is a step way down (like the severe lack of mission types or any real sort of map strategy whatsoever). A genuine Musou title would still be worth a look, I think. WO3, DW8, Gundam 3, and even Samurai Warriors: Chronicles on 3DS have all been recommended and would be great places to start.I would like to play a musou too but I did not like Sengoku Basara 3. I found the game lacking of combos, too much repetition, is there any game with a combat similiar to Dmc, Bayonetta... but with the premise of fighting thousands of enemies?

Speaking of BASARA, Sengoku BASARA 3 Utage is still my favorite game in the genre. It has been out for a while now, so it doesn't fit the current releases theme the above do, but its a game that shouldn't be missed. They doubled the roster from 3 (SB:SH in the west) and made all the returning characters even better than they were in 2H/3. I have sunk many, many a hour into that game.
Sengoku BASARA 4 and Sengoku Musou 4 are both coming out early next year in Japan and are bound to be really big. I'm already loving what I've seen in SB4 just from their first trailer, so I know it's gonna be a day 1 import for me.

As for a hack and slash game with more involved mechanics akin to DMC or Bayonetta, I can't think of any, mainly because they're totally different in my eyes. Even some shooter-esque games like EDF and experiments like Crimson Sea (Koei) have more in common with Musou titles than the latter has with DMC/Bayo. I think Sengoku Basara would've been the most apt recommendation for your request. I'd venture to say that most people who appreciate this genre do so for many reasons beyond combat, whether it be battlefield management, grinding/collection, relaxation/unwinding, or even just the campiness and sheer audacity of everything. If deep fighting mechanics are mainly what you're looking for then you might be out of luck.
Now, putting yourself into a cathartic state by killing things is another story. Plenty of other games would work for that. I remember feeling really satisfied sending enemies careening across the screen in something like Otogi, for example, and Kratos' double-chained blades have a really wide attacking radius that can sometimes make God of War feel Musou-ish in terms of killing mobs of enemies (whereas DMC/Bayo tend to feel a bit more one-on-one). If you ignore the ranking system, Raiden can go to town on hapless foes in much the same way. Action RPGs like Kingdom Hearts and Darksiders can evoke a similar "trampling over bubble wrap" feeling, as well. Even some shmups with their popcorn/zako enemies do the trick for me sometimes.
It all just depends on what you're craving, I guess. =\
Maybe try Drakengard 2, it isnt MUCH deeper but has some other stuff to it, look it up and see what you think. Also batshit crazy story
Personally I can't recommend Utage enough. They doubled the roster by making npcs playable and bringing back SB2H vets. They finally made Matsunaga playable. They added a bunch of new stages. They brought back Unification mode. They made it so every character now had 5 skills at once (hold square being the new one for many). Etc... The improvements over 3 are enough that the only reason I ever suggest 3 is for those who refuse to import yet can easily get SB:SH.Is Sengoku Basara 3 Utage significantly better than the vanilla English version? If so, is the language barrier significant?

IDK what team worked on them, but I'm almost certain that the team that did OPKM1 did SHM. It feels like they tried to take what was done in HM and toss it into OPKM's engine. Sure it speed things up, but it removed jump, block and enough other combat options to the point where the sequel felt watered down to me.I think Omega Force only worked on the original and didn't do the sequel, which would explain a lot.
Dynasty Warriors NEXT
I've been wanting to pick them up on the cheap for some time now, but I've heard that the quality of some these can vary wildly. I didn't like the touchscreen stuff in the NEXT demo all that much either, but having a Musou title on the go sounds great.
Seeing how this is turning into a general musou recommendation thread, what are you guys thoughts on the following?
Warriors: Legends of Troy
Bladestorm: The Hundred Year's War
Trinity: Souls of Zill Oll
Dynasty Warriors NEXT

Completely agree.Zill O'll is wonderful. I highly, HIGHLY recommend it. It's not perfect by any means, but if you're a musou fan and want something a little different from the usual, it's absolutely great.
DolphinI have this on Wii, but for some reason I can't be bothered to play it.. PC version please?
I say, if you want a musou game on the Vita, wait for Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate.
NEXT wasn't bad and it looked great, but I hated the touchscreen features, the duels that took forever to do and the completely random method of unlocking characters with their version of Empires.

Sengoku basara samurai heroes is far and away the absolute best gameplay wise (and much more subjectively, character design wise)
The only knock against it would be only having 16 characters. But then again each of the 16 is extremely unique and fun as opposed to the trend dynasty warriors games have been going which is adding tons and tons of kind of same-y movesets

Question for Dynasty fans:
I'm thinking about buying Dynasty 7 Empires... but how likely are they to make an 8 Empires?
I've read 8 has fixed a lot of the FPS issues and that would probably make it a much better candidate.
(also, I'm a patient man, if I have to wait a year for 8 Empires, I don't mind)
Wait for Orochi 3 Ultimate (which may not come out in English) or import One Piece Kaizoku Musou 2 (which is definitely not coming out in English for the Vita), which is a fantastic port of the PS3 version. I have the game on both platforms and the Vita version is missing nothing and visually is very close.

Is 8 Empires even necessary with the Ambition mode in DW8?
But look at Koei's track record...seems pretty likely, lol.
It depends on what you're looking for in the game, I guess. I do agree that SB gives you a bit more flexibility in how you customize/set up your character due to accessories and the changeable special attack, but then SB3 makes you play the same 10 or so stages with every character multiple times for every route, with only the ones at the end being (rarely) unique to them. At least when doing the story modes in SSM, even maps from different viewpoints have different objectives to them. By the time I fully finished SB3, I was so done with having to repeat the same stages over and over again with little to no variety, which greatly hampers just how creative you can be with different characters.
There's only so many times I'm gonna want to do Hetsugigawa: Memories, THE LAST STAND or Gassantoda Castle before I totally lose it.
