Lol Vinny at the end of the mailbag "You motherfucker"

Also, seeing that empty desk is still completely soul destroying.

So I start watching the Dota 2 quicklook and the first thing I notice:

Oops... sorry, vinny...

The marked friend request is mine. It's the only friend request I sent to a GiantBomb member, a little after I got Dave on my friendlist..

Disappointed with Jeff this QL. Was really looking forward to this one, and he just made it so, depressing. The snide remarks and comments were not needed tbh.

I dunno it was just Jeff being Jeff. He wasn't interested that's all.

I hope Vinny keeps going with dota and Drew as well.

I haven't updated vinnybomb in a while. I think I'm a month behind. I know 4 weeks ago he wasn't on it due to the BART strike, and 3 weeks ago was the Ryan memorial (I can't recall a gem quote from him in it), but I need to search through the last two podcasts to find the exact quotes that I liked. This weeks I'm thinking "Double O DOTA" and two weeks ago as something along the line of "What are you doing?! I mean, not with your life, but with the game".

Anyone have a good quote from the Ryan episode?

So much Leisure Suit hate, it's certainly aged (most notably the awful slots and transportation system) but the whole game and the series at large is completely tongue in cheek and knows it very well. Really think they gave a bad impression of the game, but oh well. Anyone that thinks otherwise is a misogynistic manbaby apparently.

Is that iracing Oculus Rift patch out? Would be neat to see them try that.

I'm of the opinion that most Sierra adventure games aged poorly (not just because a lot of them were average to poor when launched), and the Larry series has always been an oddity to me. I never found it funny, I never liked its puzzles (they are cheap or obscure or repetitive), and the "tongue in cheek" excuse always felt like, well, an excuse.

I guess it just has its audience... and that's it. It really is like Porky's. I never thought Porky's was funny, or sexy, or whatever. I thought it was dumb and boring.

Adventure games from that area are weird. I REALLY liked Loom in its day, and there are aspects today that I still enjoy. But, it's aged poorly. Not as poorly as The Dig, but poorly. I'd even say the same thing of Full Throttle (which I always felt was too short). Fate of Atlantis has aged fantastically, to me, as well as both Monkey Island games. Last Crusade I came to late, so it always was a bit archaic.

I posted a thread on Brian Moriarty's 4 observations on adventure games from 1990 because I think they apply today to all games. With adventure games from this era, they rely on only two things: writing and puzzles. If the writing is mediocre, then it depends on the puzzles... and the puzzles in LSL are horrid and tedious.

So, was Brad doing any service to the game? No. But even Vinny, who has a adventure game mindset (as you can clearly see in the Quick Look), couldn't figure stuff out so early in the game, even with his suggestions being completely reasonable. That just shows poor, crappy design.

Sorry for the double posts...

As Giant Bomb's premier Game of the Year-ologist (the Nate Silver of Giant Bomb GOTY...):

I'm a bit stumped as to what is going to be the winner this year due to recent events. Last year was obviously down to X-COM or The Walking Dead, and anyone could clearly see that they would settle on X-COM as their GOTY (not just because Jeff didn't finish The Walking Dead). Strong arguments were made for MGSIV and GTAIV, but GTAIV always had the lead on that discussion. Uncharted 2 was the obvious winner (despite the lengthy rebuttal by Vinny), and nothing was going to stop Mass Effect 2 in 2010. The only true "toss up" year was the Skyrim debacle where they talked themselves out of giving the award to the game that truly deserved it to them (also, that was the year they were all really negative toward each other and made the entire discussion really tense/unhappy to listen to).

Patrick's voice will be diminished due to his distance from the crew (they'll Skype him in like they did Alex, but without being in daily, constant contact, I don't know if he will hold much sway in the prelude to the event). Brad will undoubtably do what he always does and stonewall the discussing in an attempt to get what he wants (Brad, if you are reading this, admit you were wrong to deny Francis York Morgan as best character) and try to get DOTA 2 a higher place than it deserves. But as for Game of the Year? No clue so far (and the year is more than half over). Titanfall? I doubt the others will be into it as much as presumably Jeff. Watch_Dogs? Well, Ryan won't be around to push for it with Jeff. Will they anoint Saints Row IV GOTY in a clear attempt to make up for their "shameful" and ludicrous rejection of Saints Row the Third? Right now, The Last of Us seems like the strong lead, and the sentimental favorite (both because of its own content, and the added weight due to Ryan's departure), but they haven't played it yet. And, Jeff can be very fickle to things that have hype attached to them regardless of their quality (the movies Avatar and The Avengers, Red Dead Redemptions... tomatoes). Brad and Patrick are ready to shoot down Bioshock Infinite as made evident in the live feed and various other comments... Can Grand Theft Auto IV pull off a late surprise, or will it battle the previous installment that won out in Giant Bomb's first year?

What will Drew's involvement be in the discussion? Will he be sitting in for all the awards? Him and Dave never had input in GOTY, so will that change with Drew this year?

Also, I don't know if it would be appropriate, but I'd sure like to see them do a "Best Ryan Davis Moment at Giant Bomb" as an award. I think it would be fitting and touching to hear them argue about the top three Ryan moments at Giant Bomb, and angrily and bitterly settling on a compromise of some sorts.

(questions: Has anyone other than Brad played and finished the new Devil May Cry? Is Cart Life eligible this year, or is it discounted as a last year release?)

The Ryan Davis Award for Best Title Screen
Winner: Hotline Miami 2
Make it happen.

It's not just that it's the tongue in cheek, but it plays around with the idea that Larry is kind of a creep and comes off as a sad sack. Doesn't mean it's some high satire either but it can be quite clever sometimes. It's just really not this vile, misogynistic work some people are attempting to paint it as. It's an exaggerated parody of a person with a 60s mindset coming into the 70s.

If nothing else I really disagree about the puzzles in the game, or at least the ones for the first portion of the game(it can get a bit more loose with the items later on). I hadn't played the second remake for years and I was able to get through them quite quickly. All of them are actually shockingly reasonable, buy the drunk a drink of his choice, get a condom before you visit the hooker, grab the batteries from the remote etc. They are quite far from the exaggerated, tedious adventure game puzzle madness found in some of the Gabriel Knight games or The Longest Journey.

And it's really nothing like Porkys in terms of tone or purpose outside of having somewhat crude sexual humor.

I haven't finished the Longest Journey, despite its high regard, because I don't particularly care for its setting and its puzzles, so I can't comment on it.

But, the stuff with continually click on things over and over again, like the dildo to get the batteries, or the television, just seem tedious and lame. "I already tried the remote" or "I already tried to open the vibrator" or "Wait, I have to turn this other knob" all seem drawn out and petty to me. Same goes with trying to enter the back room in the bar, where you have to keep selecting the password, etc. Any LucasArts game would just say "ok, you did this puzzle. go ahead and skip it so we don't continually waste your time". But, no, Larry keeps making you do mundane things over and over and over again.

And, it's the LucasArts fan in me, but I really hate the cheap deaths in the game.

(It's not worth discussing misogyny on the internet, so I'll ignore that part of your post)

Also, there's the casino/betting stuff. It's not fun to constantly click and bet on the Blackjack and slot games. And, how much money do you need at any moment? Who knows, so just keep playing! (And, the tedious of always having to pay the cab, etc, it just gets old).

I've never replayed the Larry games, and going through this new version is the first time I've replayed it in decades, but the only Larry game I actually remember enjoying is Love for Sail. Haven't played that since release, though.

Inventory management and item combinations are a pretty basic part of your average adventure game. Really don't understand your complaint there. If you examine the remote after trying it you get the notice that tells you it doesn't have batteries. Which subsequently gives you a goal, what should they do? And the dildo just opens when you click it, it gives you a warning because there's a gag where you can show it to every character in the game. Certainly not the highest of humor there but there are some amusing jokes.

Suppose that gets into the whole conversation about whether point and click games are relevant today but the actual inventory management is among the smoothest in the genre to me.

Completely agree about the casino slot requirements though, that is something was awful in the original and they kept it. Quite a few other elements were changed so why that remains I can't say. Very tedious and shows the age more than anything else. Same goes for the transportation system which was one of my biggest complaints, it's just very tedious and again something that should have been changed for the game.

Don't think the humor has aged all that horribly as well, it was a game released in the 80s about a 60s era sadsack failing horribly to adapt to the 70s. About as relevant to modern life now as it was then.

And Love for Sail is a much better game in general, Lounge Lizards does show its age both in the mechanics and comparative scope of the game.

Late to the party here but this Bureau Quicklook XL is doing a grand job of selling me on this, it really looks like they rescued the project. The videoplayer is being real shitty though

That first training mission is the most interesting thing about DOTA 2 to me - with it's specifically built map and the bridge collapsing and stuff. I would love a Starcraft 2 style single player campaign with that engine/mechanics.

That's the second tutorial mission :P

Once the mod stuff starts hitting plenty of people will be creating maps like that I'm sure.

That and porting tf2 maps into it.

I hope Vinny keeps going with dota and Drew as well.
Oh god I hope not. There's way too much Dota on the site already for us who don't care for the game. The feature surely is nice for fans but GB shouldn't be half dedicated to one game.

To be honest, I hope Brad stops with the Dota thing rather sooner than later. The QLs he could be doing instead would be better content for the site and as a paying member I don't particularly like the fact that my money partly funds someones online gaming addiction.

edit: and just as I type this, another Brad/Vinny/Jeff QL goes online, invalidating my whole post: Mercenary Kings

I think we'll need to see how things are in about 2 months to see where Drew stands in relation to the site. It appears that he's stepped up to being part of the core crew, a process that had already started to begin even prior to Ryan's passing, but I think if he's still as prominent in video content and really has become the permanent 4th chair on the podcast that there's no way he won't be in the room for GOTY deliberations.

At the same time, if they do end up hiring someone new, I can definitely see him returning to his old role of only occasional on-camera appearances.

But it's funny to think back to a time that a Drew sighting was a treat and a surprise. Now we're at the point that he'll chime in even when he's just running the tech for a QL.

Mercenary kings looks totally rad.

Kind of sad that the ladder incident mentioned in the podcast wasn't present in the quick look though.

Just caught up with that NCAA quick look. I would totally watch a youtube supercut of every time Brad ends a quick look early, asks for a break in the podcast, gets up during a live show or otherwise complains about his small bladder.
