Well if that means he'll stfu from now on that'd be lovely.

I'm almost disgusted by the prospect that a majority of GAF would prefer a nice guy PR persona to a honest indie dev's perspective. Without 'whiney', 'angry', 'etc.' developers (and artists in general) the world would be a boring place. I find my Mike Pattons much more interesting than the fucking guy from Coldplay.

The worst thing about this is that he isn't done. He'll un-cancel Fez 2 soon enough.

The sooner this guy is gone from the industry, the better.

man.. this is kinda like the Britney Spears meltdown...

Peoples' fascination and obsession with 'celebrity'... I don't follow either of these guys on twitter, but i would guess a ton of people do, and then tweet at them daily about what a dick they are.. i dont know if anyone deserves that much anonymous negativity...

i guess in this age of social media, people get access to people that they had never had before... i like Tom Cruise movies.. i dont agree with his beliefs.. but that is no matter for me.. i dont like Justin Bieber's music.. but millions of teen girls do.. so i let them enjoy that.. i dont deal w/ it. Why are people so excited to engage people they dont like, and then complain about it afterwards?

I feel like that's a huge part of what happened here. Why go out of the way to fuck with the guy if you don't even like his work?

People need to stop giving this guy attention. My god, he's like a 12 year old girl who always needs to be the center of everything.

I appreciate they exist and make this industry much more ridiculous and fun, but I still think they're idiots.

Not expecting that, especially on the internet, is completely naive. Face the mob, present ideas and thoughts that don't create mobs, or say what you want and ignore the mob.

Well, I guess Fish should go live in a cave then.

I will, too, because I have similar issues, and I would hate to have anyone deal with my own immature, pathetic presence that should just die, because all people like Fish should just die miserable and alone and go away so the extroverts with no problems whatsoever can reign.

The guy clearly has a temper with a short fuse.. it just doesn't mix well with the internet. I dont think hes as bad as people try to make him out to be, he just gets pissed and starts saying stupid shit.

Hell almost everyone on these boards has said something stupid at one time or another.. imagine being called out for that for years! just because you managed to make a successful game. You would probably end up spitting back some dumb shit as well if treated like that for so long.

Some people with known status just don't do well when mixed up in this stuff.. hell I remember reading an article about Eminem (nah I dont listen to his music) where he said he avoids computers altogether because if he read what people were saying about him on twitter and facebook he would probably end up killing someone.

Anyways I think I will just say this.. most if not manys hate for Phil just as immature as some of his posts.. yet you wont get called on it like he does.

Twitter is an absolutely putrid tool for anything more than a relatively indirect and harmless stream of consciousness.

But yes, I agree, assuming he's not trolling Fish probably needs someone grounded and compassionate in his life to help uproot him out of shit like this. And honestly, making your twitter profile private is not a bad idea.

Christ, the comments on that announcement page... I'd prob hate myself if people I didn't know in person were telling me those kinda things all the time

A certain amount of attention from internet fuckbags comes with being semi-famous.

The reason Phil Fish gets so much more abuse than most semi-famous people is because he's a fuckbag himself a lot of the time. People can say "Oh it's SO HARD to be that hated" but you know he wouldn't be that hated if he would stop being shitty so much.

How do you get away with it?

You seem to prefer straw men too.

FEZ 2 wasn't going anywhere creatively, and Fish takes an internet argument as the opportunity to announce that a game (that probably didn't exist) was cancelled, in order to get attention for himself.

What a baby.

'I don't like the criticism. I don't like the attention.' He says (albeit not in those words) on his fucking Twitter account. He's telling someone to kill themselves, and he can't put up with being criticized?

Calling him a baby isn't fair on babies. I just don't want to hear from, or about him, anymore.

Hopefully this is a ruse to enable him to withdraw from press and social media and develop in secrecy. I would like more Fez.

Phil has got to be the biggest drama queen in gaming. I don't actively dislike him or anything, but how much attention can an indie-developer who's made but one (great) game get? Because that is all he has done after all. Some medium-sized studios get less press coverage, forum threads and other forms of media-attention than this guy.

Kotaku-article incoming in 3... 2...

*Checks Kotaku after being away for a while*

And I'm done here, now let's all tune in again when he continues development anyway when his attention-meter reaches 100%.

Pretty sure Patton is a pretty decent guy in person, even though his creative product is more abrasive.

Really, why do people mistake a lack of tact for honesty?

What a fucking child.

I understand he gets a lot of shit on the internet. So fucking what. Here's an idea, stop desperately searching for news about yourself and stop interacting with the media. Listen to what people say about your abrasive personality and learn from it.

Instead he consistently throws gasoline on the fire and then gets pissy when he gets called out for it. He literally has now used the nuclear option we all know from child hood - "Fine! I'm taking my ball and going home!"

Sad.
This about sums it up.

.

Also, seriously I've said this like, 500,000 times in the past 3 months: Please learn how to appropriately use Twitter, everyone. It's a megaphone, not a private conversation. Don't say anything you wouldn't say to an audience while standing on stage.

This is it, exactly. Twitter is a public forum, and the more you have followers, the more you should be aware of its nature.

It's hard to imagine being the target of that much vitriol and not being able to react to it like a normal person. I don't want to call this internet bullying (he's quite good at bullying himself) but man is the internet shitty.

Oh, and taking everything out on Games Journalism as if you should expect anything out of it is rather disingenuous.

Not getting your point here. Have a controversial/confrontational attitude or personality and don't neuter it at all while on the internet? Expect confrontations and discourse. Can't handle discourse? Don't present things in a way that attracts confrontation.

You know, I have a temper that gets the best of me, so I sympathetic towards Fish in a way. But these Indie designers really need to cut out on the attitude towards gamers and other targets that they don't like. In fact, I know that it would really improve their image and more people would support them. I just don't understand why developers realize that.
I love all of you

'I don't like the criticism. I don't like the attention.' He says (albeit not in those words) on his fucking Twitter account. He's giving death threats, and he can't put up with being criticized.
Fish gave out death threats?

I don't recall him doing that (that Futurama quote isn't a death threat, you people... your reasoning is bad and you should feel bad. Say it's in poor taste or whatever but don't call it something it's not) and given the veracity and sheer stupidity of some gamers I'm sure he's received quite a few of his own. And that count is only going to increase, starting tonight

You know that Patton shat and vomited into hotels central air? He threw a guy off a stage and broke his legs? Just Google 'Mike Patton' and 'Wolfmother' and see how he talks about his peers.

Kamiya's widespread adoration on this very forum is a great example that illustrates just exactly how you built a strawman to make a point.

Phil Fish isn't Mike Patton, he's Axl Rose.

Funny thing is, I wanted to write Axl Rose in the first place. Still prefer grandiose douche bags like Rose to PR speak. Do your thing, don't compromise. I love that attitude.

The condescension in this thread is no different from Phish's reaction on twitter. Pretty much everyone in this thread who makes a condescending comment is as much a douche as Phish.

Phil Fish

Are you saying Kotaku (or any gaming site) shouldn't report on this or something?

How predictable Kotaku, reporting on a major game being canceled.

you guys are all morons.. you guys a bunch of assholes, and your work and contributions are worthless.

..

just kidding... but now.. how angry were you for the 5 seconds you were reading that? These indie developers probably get a lot of that every second on twitter... kinda harsh i think.. even the most easy going person would be bogged down by the negativity soon enough...

This is fucking embarrassing. Why can't we have someone like Amir Rao be the face of indies or something? Someone who's not a complete tool? Please?
