FEZ 2 (possibly?) cancelled | Aka: Phil Fish acts like a 5 year old on Twitter

What would be the point of that? If you're in the public eye, there will be people who dislike you and/or what you do. That's life. Even outside of the public eye, nobody is loved by everyone. Even someone who lives in a bubble surrounded by sycophants has somebody secretly pissing in his beer. Engaging any and all negativity is the path to an early grave.

Strength in numbers. It's easy for mobs of people to attack Fish because he's on his own. If more indie devs hit back, especially at people like Marcus Beer, things would be a lot different than we see here.

Insulted who? Who exactly? Wait a second, so basically what your saying is your perfect, you have apologized for every wrong thing you said. You've never acted irrationally or said something on twitter that could have offended someone? Give me a break, he doesn't owe anyone an apology. If you aren't going to apologize, why should he? This is ridiculous

I never said I was perfect. I'm perfectly willing to admit that I can be a pretty huge dick, especially when I'm sufficiently inspired. And I accept that if people respond to me in kind, I earned it.

Phil Fish has repeatedly acted like an asshole to people, but wants to play the victim when he gets it thrown back in his face? Fucking PLEASE. He's an adult. He either accepts responsibility for his own actions and acknowledges that his own attitude has rubbed a LOT of people the wrong way, or he can fuck off to his own little sandbox and hide in a bubble with his band of fanboys and sycophants, and they can have a happy little circlejerk about how mean the outside world is and how everything they agree with is good, everything they don't agree with sucks, and every time he wins an award for something he can tweet "CHOKE ON IT" and get a million pats on his back for being "such a rebel".

Either way, videogames keep getting made, and Phil Fish will be forgotten eventually.

What? Do you honestly think there is any value of replying to the idiots that wrote shit like that on the post on his website? Those people will never learn, and even if they do, another 100 will pop up saying the same shit.

It's a never ending battle. The best way to tackle such comments is by ignoring them.

Quitting is probably the only way that he can ignore them, so he did.

What a great solution.

For a site as seemingly against internet bullying as NeoGAF is its kind of sad to see so many justify it because the guy voices his opinion about things, and they dont agree. It does sometimes seem like Phish is an emotional dude so I hope he does not do anything stupid because if assholes on the internet.

Hopefully his friends can get through to him about continuing his work(if hes serious) because I want to see what he has planned for the Rift.

How many architects light their blueprints on fire after being called out by a journalist on their personal behavior, and not the quality of their work?

Maybe architect is a poor descriptor. I wanted to use the word artist, but didn't want to infer a lack of culpability by virtue of artstry. Maybe painter would work, but there's so much technical proficiency and mathematical precision involved in that caliber of solo game development that it's difficult to reduce the person to pure expression. I've seen plenty of people destroy their own work out of frustration. Done it a few times myself. One of my favorite artists, Tonedeff, put out an EP called The Projectionist, under the alias "Peter Anthony Red" and it was effectively a symbolic funeral for his existing, 20 yrs-strong persona as an impeccable lyricist that was denied the limelight at every turn... a kind of cleansing and purging act, that I think gave him the opportunity to renew and find himself again.

I'd say, if anything, it shows Phil Fish is still the same person he was as a "starving artist" - not above the fray, detached, or without passion. Still creating personal expressions of self in his medium, and still takes criticism personally because of it.

He is SOOOOO right. People here act like they are perfect saints and angels that they have never said anything bad. Half of them say worst things than the developers themselves. Ridiculous.

We're gamers on a forum, we're not in the public eye for everyone to see. He is a professional and on a site like Twitter you should ACT professional. Personal emails or phone calls are for this kind of talk.

The stuff he's saying whether right nor wrong is up for debate but for the sake of his job and his future with certain companies he should simmer down a bit

1. Internet users treat real people like abstractions.

2. Alleged abstractions turn out to be real people.

3. Internet users outraged.

Nice try. You skipped over the very first step where Phil Fish treated the internet and the people he interacted with like an abstraction.

anyone know the % of the $15 he got from the xbox version I skipped the steam sale and will continue to skip it...

He's right.

I guess Jonathan Blow is not part of THE INTERNET.

Wow. This has been a really sad day for this industry in general. So much immaturity and growing up that needs to be done on both sides. I feel like I stepped into a virtual high school with all the amount of unnecessary and stupid drama that usually happens with kids of that age. That whole twitter exchange between Phil and Marcus was absolutely embarrassing.

Whatever happened to making, playing and discussing great games?

Is there a reason why people who bring up the "choke on it" comment always leave out that he was responding to someone insulting him? It was certainly an escalation, but it was also just him defending himself (like many have said, tactlessly.)

What I've learned from this thread:

- It's impossible to take criticism gracefully
- We should not call people out for acting like a jerk
- Everything is the internet's fault
- Humility does not solve anything
- Indie developers are delicate flowers who should be fenced off from the harsh realities of the world

So it's okay to make sexually harassing comments as long as it's in response to someone else being mean to you?

He's either gonna hit rock bottom or just fade out of the public eye. He comes off as one of those guys who will rage at the drop of a hat.

The solution is universal adoration... or some meds and some goddamn therapy.

Or people get used to some honesty for once? If everyone said what was really on their minds all the time, then a lot more people would be crying for everyone else to get some meds and therapy. Maybe a more honest world is what we need, instead of keeping everything inside because we have to be afraid of what others think of us.

So what? People dislike him because of his history. You say something stupid and/or inflammatory and it will stick with you. This is common fucking sense.

Our expectations of humanity on the internet are that low, yes. But it's still worth pointing out that is damn shitty it has to be this way.

Phil Fish is definitely a loud moth so sympathy from many will be tough to come by, but he didn't TRULY freak out today until that dude said he threatened physical harm to his ex gf. He's right to be upset about it, that's slanderous and should not be taken lightly.

I don't agree with his ultimate solution, but he isn't wrong to be upset about it.

WHAT?! I'm sorry but I don't follow. Last time I checked, Fish isn't the CEO of Sony, Apple or Google. The man made a video game out of his spare time because that's the career choice he made. He is not OBLIGATED to act professional. He doesn't walk around with an agent who manages his twitter feed, neither is he this big shot riding around in a bugatti.

He is human. I keep beating this but seriously. It's not like he doesn't know what he's doing but its not his responsibility to make everyone like him, neither is it his reponsibility to please everyone by saying things YOU want to hear regardless if you agree or not. He is his own person and he should have the freedom, on his personal twitter page that he manages by himself to say the things he wants to say. Should we all filter every single thing we say when someone doesn't agree with us. Come on now... This ridiculous. If I has popular, idgaf who doesn't agree with me. I can say what I want when I want. If it's news it's news, but I didn't ask for it to be put there. I have a right to speak and I'm not going to filter anything just because some people don't like it.

For me, Fez is probably the most over-hyped game I've ever played - I was expecting great things and had such high hopes, but it was just a very poor, at times confusing platformer with a semi-interesting gimmick.

That being said, with regards to the Twitter strop, I agree with Jonathan Blow... as much as you don't expect people to react like he did, he's only human and if pushed will eventually react badly.

I'm certain it was huge a heat of the moment thing when he said it was cancelled, but despite not liking the game myself I hope he wasn't being serious as a lot of people (on here in particular) seem to love it.

(edit) holy shit, only just saw the full comments - fuck that, unnecessary.

Are you making the argument that tact is inherently dishonest?

Because that's an argument with a much larger scope than anything going on in this thread right now. It's one that I've considered myself several times.

So it's okay to make sexually harassing comments as long as it's in response to someone else being mean to you?

I'd say hey, if someone is going to personally insult you, sure, you go right ahead and personally insult them back. Sure, it might not be the "adult" thing to do, but in the heat of the moment, I'd totally understand it. And I hope you're just being deliberately obtuse about telling someone to suck your dick in a moment of anger being sexual harassment.

Coercion and diplomacy are fantastic skills, not using them is the sign of a poor debater or weak social skills in general.

Tact is needed in reality, sorry.

You know, something I find interesting about all this is that to my knowledge all the hate for him started when he made a comment about Japanese game development, people blew up and the shit storm.began. Yet Keji Inafune, Kojima, and a variety of other developers have said the exact same thing (only abit more politely) and yet you dont see anyone hounding them in anywhere near the same fashion. Its pretty interesting to see honestly.

it depends on how tact is performed
like you can honestly attempt to be tactful or you can dishonestly do it, iz pretty ez

Ok sure he's not exactly beholden to anyone but he's an Indie dev and isn't the hope when you make Indie games to eventually break into the big time? or keep progressing to make better games in the future? People in the industry will hardly just take him on or trust him with stuff if he's so easily riled up. I mean he fucking told the dude to go kill himself.... is he a 12 year old in youtube comments?

People always have a right to say what they want and Beer has shown that countless times himself but there is also something called self control that you learn as you get older not to respond to obvious provoking comments because "Speaking your mind" isn't exactly gonna make things better

I mean if the cancellation of his game is the result of this then he really should have just let it go or take it to a more private avenue

That's irrelevant to what's going on. Fish is a known developer that has a reputation to maintain (or I thought so.) You can't go around dishing immature shit and expect to not get backlash.

So your telling me, you say something..For instance

"Nintendo sucks..Their games are for kids and they won't ever shake that image."

You deserve to be insulted down to nothing because you say that? Oh yeah, some one is going to take huge offense to that because they love Nintendo so much that even the slightest thing makes them angry (as we see on forums all the time). Does that mean its okay for that obviously offended fanboy who you wasn't even talking to, privilege to insult you over and over again? You tell me?

The problem is, none of you know how this feels. From your perspective your saying, He said bad things, he deserves it. Really though? That's the consensus? Even when it's not something that bad but because you didn't agree with it, he deserves it? Give me a break. At this point I'm not even defending the guy but speaking some real truth. No one wants to admit there part in the situation.
