Phil Fish has Twitter tantrum, cancels Fez 2 and goes home with his ball

So it's totally ok to go open season on him!

Yeah, it is. That's what happens when you put yourself in the public spotlight. It's always a risk. Most artists accept this and handle it in stride without resorting to douchebag comments, bipolar or not.

It's not an expression that he can simply flip a switch and fix the situation, it's an expression that in the mean time the rest of us cannot be asked to shoulder his burden.

I believe in a compassionate society and in redemption.

I have an individual close to me in my life who suffers from a recognized and diagnosed mental health illness that is generally considered more severe, less treatable, and more outwardly hostile to others than bipolar. This isn't to have a pissing match. I just want to say that while I support him/her and would be willing to accommodate him/her in many regards (including giving them a place to sleep when necessary) there are also limits that are not to be crossed because I need to protect myself and my own happiness. That's not about justified or not, right or wrong--those kinds of lines are absolutely necessary and inevitable for you to draw when someone like that is in your life.

As I mentioned above, a compulsive gambler cannot stop and cannot help themself and yet they also CANNOT be allowed to hurt others. Support is necessary and given, but it isn't a license for the disease to express itself in a way that hurts others without consequence.

This is the public at large and Fish's peers in the industry expressing that Fish's abuse and attention-seeking has reached or crossed that line. We can be empathetic to the challenges he faces while still having clear and fair expectations of his behaviour.

Very well put. Detrimental behavior should not be reinforced regardless of one's condition.

Oh so do you have bipolar and suffered from an anxiety disorder? Have you suffered any kind of disorders at all? Do you have an idea?

Why don't you go to a place like www.anxietyforum.net and go patronize them. I'm sure you'll change their minds about their suffering. Tell them it's no big deal. It'll go over really well, I'm sure of it.

They're both awful in different ways. Please though, continue to tell me and the millions of others out there what we went through wasn't a big deal.

This is what I was saying. Not that either one was worse than the other. They are different. That's all.

And yes, I have experience with both disorders.

This is what we call fiction.

Come again?

You are very right. And I'm sorry if I seemed to excuse Fish's actions by a 100%. I really don't, I am just baffled because many just answered 10x worse that Fish did.

I really hope he has someone who can help him, I truly do.

I'm not a mental health expert but I've had counselling and Fish seems like he would benefit if he had someone to talk to about the negativity and threats flung at him. The guy's got talent, it'd be a shame for it to go to waste, there's always help out there for everyone to seek out.

This is a much more reasonable way to go about discussing it.

I feel bad for those who loved Fez. That's about it. Dipolar or not, this guy is the epitome of poisonous, vain and obnoxious. I'm happy to see him go and I won't miss any of his hypothetical future games.

That is, of course, if this is not just his latest attention-seeking trick, which wouldn't be particularly surprising.

It's a publicity stunt. There's no way he's going to get any decent amount of money in any other industry. He will come back.

Come on man, stop acting like a "disorder" is not a big deal. Unless you do in fact know about anxiety/bi-polar beyond seeing it in movies or television, don't trivialize it. Mental illness is a really complicated thing that people who haven't studied or experienced it have no business criticizing.

Saying he has any sort of mental illness at all is already a pretty big assumption that shouldn't be thrown around so easily.

1.) Apparently, Fish is the one who alluded to himself having said disorder.

2.) I never said or even suggested it's not a big deal, but the point is, it's unacceptable for him to say whatever the heck he wants, insult many people, and then use his disorder as an excuse for said behavior.

3.) I know plenty about bipolar disorder and anxiety.

My friend and I were talking about him earlier. Neither of us have played Fez, nor have I talked about him before. We were making fun of his facial hair.

Sorry for getting Fez 2 cancelled, guys. :(

The problem with Phil Fish is that when your famous you need to watch what you say more than ever on twitter. He acts cocky and makes me not want to support him. I really like notch from everything i have seen him say. Now who knows if he has some terrible things he has said yet that might change my mind.

They guy made an ass of himself in numerous occasions and didn't understand their are consequences to his actions. Not that I cared but the fact he left instead of dialing it back shows the kind of ego he has. Anyway best of luck with whatever he does next and hopefully he learns to be a bit civil as well.

You don't even know the definition of "tact", so I'm amazed you've been campaigning against your own idea of it since this story broke.

Fish has always been 'brutally honest' with his words, and people have responded in kind. Why is he the special snowflake that must be protected?

...

Yes, because I tried to hide that, instead of discussing it with forum members in a rational, respectful discussion on the subject. You know, where they didn't use it against me and use it to paint me as an idiot. But whatever, guess that's out the door now.

Just like I am. Good job.

Fez wasn't a life changing experience but it was an enjoyable game. Shame, as I was wondering what direction Fish was going with the sequel.

On another hand maybe this will be good for him. Too bad he couldn't be the bigger man on a lot of those ridiculous twitter comments instead of responding with asinine comments of his own.

How employable is he though, really? He worked at Ubisoft and hated it, he's no longer enjoying "you have complete creative and financial freedom to make whatever game you want". I guess he can probably go back to school or start investing his FEZ dollars or something. He's bought himself some time to figure out what he wants to do with his life.

Yes, you are, or at the very least trying to play up his bipolar disorder as a means to excuse his behavior. There's treatment for his disorder, and if he chooses not to seek it or it's not entirely effective for him, then he should stay away from public forums like interviews and Twitter. Sorry, but that's the simple truth. He's a narcissist and an attention whore, and quite frankly, he doesn't deserve to be defended after some of the comments he's made in the past.

I never even mentioned him. I was talking about Bipolar.

Did Phil himself ever use mental illness as an excuse for the way he acts? I think it's mostly message boards that do that.

Truly unfortunate. While I haven't played Fez, I find Phil fascinating after I watched Indie game the movie. He is one of those rare instances of a person with strong opinions who isn't afraid to speak his mind.

And this is what I like about him. While other bash people for not being straight about there opinions, here's one who does it..In a somewhat fashion that not everyone likes but is straight about it nonetheless

The point is, people are using the disorder to try to push the blame for this situation off of him and onto Beer, the gaming journalists, and the community. This is unacceptable.

Phil Fish is a child. He throws a fit every day and wonders why people are hostile towards him.

I am not overly sympathetic towards his situation as I see him as the instigator in all of this.
