I couldn't give less of a fuck.

Yea game journalism is shit, and some fans are fucking stupid.

But these are the two absolutes we've come to accept about this industry.

Plus this dude seems like a massive asshole.

Lol he blames it all on others.

Wonder if he ever thought of just not reading stuff that people said to him on twitter and whatnot.

Phil Fish is a child. He throws a fit every day and wonders why people are hostile towards him.

I am not overly sympathetic towards his situation as I see him as the instigator in all of this.

This was also my feeling watching IGTM yesterday. His GF left him, his dev partner left him and the movie tries to portray him as the pity story? Right after he said he might kill said partner at PAX?

How about he's an insufferable jerk with apparent mental issues? How about he caused these stressful situations?

What a sissy. Let me know when his level of Internet detractors reaches this guys level.

Fred just...

KEEP ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN
WHAT?
KEEP ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN ROLLIN

You're writing a little story based on unverified assumptions to support your argument i.e. you are basing it on fiction

Okay, then. Let me explore the other possibility: he got treatment. It hasn't helped him, he has been bullied, and he snaps insulting people (which I do not condone), he closes himself.

You seem to think that if he got treatment he shouldn't behave like this, but being bipolar is not something you can simply snap out. Even if has taken treatment it is obvious that it's not working for him. But if you think my entire argument it's based on fiction, I won't stop you.

I have to wonder if some indy developers are breathing a sigh of relief that they wont have such a poisonous public face anymore.

You like him for being able to dish it, but not take it?

There is a level of take only one can deal with. Not everyone can TAKE everything thrown at them. One insult, two insult maybe three...fine. Waking up everyday with insults, possibly even death threats, and still trying to get by by being me when nothing else is good enough is something that NO ONE can take. I'm a calm person, and I rarely get mad, but sometimes it becomes overwhelming at times when the added stress of work , school, family hits me and using social networking as my only venting platform of choice.

Then in his case, when I do that , I get blasted for it on a daily basis. Where i'm from, a lot of suicide happens here from people who can't even walk the streets without being criticized. Don't even get me started on people who convince themselves that a significant person is talking about them when they are, that subliminal speech and what not. I've been through it and I've lost a lot of people I knew to the same stuff.

What really bothers me in here is the hate for people who have social problems or are socially inept. No wonder I was bullied so much in high school.

That was a great insult. I don't get why people are freaking out. OMG Phil Fish wants that guy to die!!!!1!

I'm not sure which side is supposed to be considered "freaking out"; I don't think many of the people that have responded to some of the stuff he's said publicly ever threatened (or followed through) throwing out their entire career paths over it.

A lot of assholes in this thread.

Sucks for Phil but if this isnt just some knee jerk stunt I hope he can find success in a new field.

If you want to be a public figure on the web need some tick skin if you want to handle the internet or you need to take a step back and leave it alone.

I would rather he quit twitter then quit games.

Also Beer was a being a hugely unprofessional asshole on that podcast that kicked off this mess. I expected better from him. A lot of respect lost for that guy.

Maybe for telling a person to go kill themselves, or acting like a arrogant idiot all the time?

Acting like an arrogant idiot is the totality of games journalism and the commentary therein. I see no need to apologize for that when it's a ratio of hundreds of thousands to one.

He has to apologize for defending himself against someone who tried to tear down who he he is and what he does with "kill yourself"? No. That's silly. If they were friends or family, then yeah, apologizing with "I'm sorry I said that to you. I didn't mean it" etc would be due, warranted and expected. He's just talking back to some asshole who doesn't like him and said something about him.

What Phil doesn't understand is that he doesn't face the criticism that he does because he's in the gaming industry, it's because of the way he acts, the things he says, etc. By all means, Fez is a great game. Some may even say that it contains a stroke of genius. But because of the way he acts on the internet, many people can't stand him. If he's moving away from games because of the way people act toward him, then he made his own grave. If he comes back, I'll look forward to his next game. But I don't think I'll ever think highly of him as a person.

More stellar fiction, this time laden down with some delicious excluded middle. Your scenario is hardly the only "other possibility", one obvious one that springs to mind is that he doesnt in fact have any/has a self diagnosed mental condition. After all the only "evidence" is one line in one forum post and he hasnt mentioned it again. You would also think, given the creators implied narrative, that it would have been mentioned in the documentary on him.

I also dont "seem to think" anything other than that you shouldnt be putting forward your own assumptions about an unverified mental issue as fact or some kind of defence of his behaviour.

I'm not sure which side is supposed to be considered "freaking out"; I don't think many of the people that have responded to some of the stuff he's said publicly ever threatened (or followed through) throwing out their entire career paths over it.

In all these Phil Fish threads people are appalled at what he said. It was an insult. A pretty funny one too.

Throwing in the towel and blaming others gives me the impression he realises he said stupid things and offended people, but won't admit/accept it.
Maybe he'll grow up working a job, because you're not bound to get far with such an attitude.

The idea that he cancelled 'Fez 2' based on this is preposterous. I doubt that the sequel to Fez was anything more than a printed logo on an A4 sheet of paper at this time. If they had decided on puzzles, level design, artistic direction etc. they wouldn't throw that away.

Fez 2 probably suffered from a dilemma of 'how do we top the first one', and instead of spending the time of figure it out, Fish has decided he doesn't like game development anymore and has taken his ball to go home. It's fair, it's his choice, but I severely doubt that he abandoned actual work.
Most likely not, but I don't think he will be coming back from this. Many of his "fans" have now realised that they were simply stroking his ego, and that ego has swelled up and caused those fans to realise he is a, well, tosspot. Don't think you could come back from this when articles are basically agreeing with Beer.

Seriously, who just up and cancels a game because of the Internet?

What really bothers me in here is the hate for people who have social problems or are socially inept. No wonder I was bullied so much in high school.

If you are socially inept, and what you say can draw the ire of others, you don't get up on a platform and speak to millions. It's that simple. If you choose to, you have to be ready for people to argue back, and be equally offensive.

Phil Fish shouldn't have to be tolerated. If he wants to speak, he can speak. He has to understand the consequences of that. If he can't handle it, he shouldn't be on Twitter. Nobody demands he be a public face; I'd have to do a Google search if I wanted to find out who made Limbo.

Fish chose this, and he couldn't handle it. He hasn't been targeted, he put a bulls-eye on his arse and started twerking.

I like Fez a lot. It would have been nice if he would have just stayed off Twitter or whatever because the guy is clearly talented. Oh well.

Another proud moment for gamers.

If you're celebrating this...well, I'd insult you, but sociopaths don't give a shit when you tell them they're a jerk. They just laugh.

Interesting way to insult other posters while circumventing moderation. Seems to be working, too.

"I'd insult you, but [INSULT HERE] react [THIS WAY] when insulted".

Truly something to be proud of, amr.

Did Beer apologise at any point for repeatedly calling him and tosser unprovoked and telling him to fuck himself because he didn't want to give the press a story?

Beer was a jackass in the way he said it, but there was a kernel of truth: Fish gives his opinion on anything and everything, and both he and his defenders act like this is his noble unique trait that is the only source of all criticism against him. But then he acts like it's insulting and unbearable when people ask him for said opinions on things, as if he has no idea where his reputation as an outspoken developer came from.
