Some new info on Lightning Returns:FFXIII from Tokyo event

If FFVII was being made today and Toriyama was in charge, you'd be collecting, leveling, and equipping panties to your weapons and armor instead of materia. The whole second half of the game would revolve around retrieving Aeris' white panties from Sephiroth to save the world.
LOL

According to Kagari's update, some really asked about Lightning's armpits. What the hell is wrong with people....

I don't think its an issue here, but in some other places, Lightning's trademark symbol is her armpit.

Not having her show her armpit is like not having DOA girls breast jiggle.

Daisuke Watanabe once again the lead scenario writer... no this is not a good thing.

Was Toriyama's armpit fetish confirmed?!
Q1: I think that one of Lightning`s most attractive features is her armpit. Is there a costume that will show off this part of her when she does her victory pose?
A1: Something that shows off her armpit..? Well, there are some revealing sets of costumes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy those.
So close.

If it wasn't because we know is for LR, I would think those questions are for the new Compile Heart game or something.

Other than Toth, who seems to genuinely like the series, people like Perfo seem to be more interested in the perverted side of the game, overlapping fans of games like Neptunia. I am not so surprised.

And then it turns out she has the creepy X-2 mascot outfits. Or would those be less creepy than the alternative?

It sounds to me like even he was flustered.

"Uh, you're interested in my waifu's armpits? I guess you'll like some of the more revealing costumes... Ewww..."

Huh? The main outfits in X-2 craps all over the outfits in X. lolbeltdress and try hard priestess outfit. No knock on goddess Rikku's X outfit doe.

God I hope not.

Let's hope that the inevitable awful sales of this will affect him too. SE needs new blood in the writing department, like yesterday (although Watanabe hasn't been around as much, he already tainted enough games with his skills).

I want someone to ask Hashimoto about new writers and more mature themes in SE games...

Thinking about it, LR is a game which one of it's main features is the possibility to dress it's protagonist. Think about what kind of consumer something like that attracts...

I think Neptunia is one of the worst JRPG franchises, enjoy the SMT line and am still looking forward to Lightning Returns. They're just really fun, colorful games with some of the best battle systems in the business. Lighting Returns in particular seems like it has the potential to bring in a lot of really neat systems and more open design in terms of progression. Would certainly rather they had better writers though.

Seems a bit of a leap of a conclusion, although I'm sure there are a good amount overlap between all JRPG franchises really. LR still doesn't seem anywhere near Compile Heart esqe levels of fan service.

Thanks XD I still think people are really trying to see things with this whole breast thing that isn't there or at least is not overt. How did this whole breast thing start at E3 again?

I remember back at the first outfit reveal people were saying her left (or right) boob was bigger than the other one. It was pretty annoying. ~_~

Anyone know how many tracks the OST will have and how the work was split between the 3 composers?

XIII-2 was 4 discs, 1/3rd of the tracks from each composer approx.

I really hope LR: FFXIII is similar in that regard.

To be completely fair, there are a lot of other RPGs/video games that allow you to dress your characters up in different clothing. For example:
  • Resonance of Fate
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV (visible armour change)
  • Shadow Hearts: Covenant (ex: the alternate outfits for all of the ladies in your party); by a similar token, Persona 3 / P3P and P4G also let you do this in this capacity
  • The Last Story (visible armour change)
  • Dragon Quest VIII (Jessica)
  • Dragon Quest IX (visible armour change)
  • Dark Cloud 2
  • Animal Crossing
  • Assassin's Creed (outfit dyes)
  • Saints Row
  • Radiata Stories (visible armour change)
  • Xenoblade (visible armour change)
  • Endless Ocean
That's not including the myriad of RPGs with class systems that allow you to change your character's outfit (ex: FF5, FF10-2, 4 Heroes of Light, Narikiri Dungeon X). Tales games let you change costumes.

With that said, the direction in which they're going into for some of the costumes in this game aren't to my liking at all.

That's cuz it was true lol.

First thing I noticed.

Its always you, isnt it? :P

Huh. I dont know what are trying to imply with this. I am honestly buying the game because I am interested in how the story will end and because I have fun with the battle system in the series. I think the dress up thing is a cool addition, but thats not the main reason why I am buying it. Anedoctal, but in the end, the thing is: generalizations never work.

They're not going to reveal what I expect to be the last dungeon in any event before release. I still expect the fourth continent (hopefully the mountain, anyway anything behind those clouds) to make an apperance throughout the game, just wait and see. Available to any bet you wanna make :)

And... again, if it isn't there, who cares? The game is awesome already and that world is going to be the best setting in an RPG I'll play in this generation.

I'll also enjoy seeing how many players will be playing LR after the enthusiasm iwll spread through reviews and players' feedback once releases. Just wait and see... we'll remember LR for the next years to come and for positive reasons. It's going to be one of the best FF evah.

This is so unreal. This game is all what an FF should be: huge world to explore freely, lots of customization, lots of content, graphics, style, music... it's, again, the most ambitious and interesting FF from 2006, maybe even more ambitious than what XII was at its time. It's a dream come true for any FF fan and I might add for any jRPG lover. This could be the title the finally takes the genre into 2013 and further. Its legacy could be quite huge and important if not for that stupid spin off name they decided to title they game with.

Critics will love it, players will spread the love around once releases. The title will be both successfull critically and sales-wise once everyone gets to understand HOW GOOD it is. Just few months to November to have the first impressions and an idea of how this plays out.

Man... I can't wait for November. Hopefully after this game is released, I won't have to see these insanely generalized and hyperbolic comments anymore.

I'm okay with breasts in games (and in general). However, when a developer says something like, oh, this:
Goto: Yes, her chest jiggles. Since everyone can decide what costume she’ll wear, you can make sure it does (laughs). By the way, Since Lightning swings her arm when you change her weapon in the menu screen, that’s a recommended action for sure-fire jiggling! To see it even better it could be useful to equip a small shield. Look forward to it!
It gives me pause.

"We've increased her breast size and now let you dress her up like a sex doll. Also, here's our advice for seeing the most breast jiggles."

I'm not confident that the development of this game is in capable hand.

I LOL'd

My favorite parts of MMOs are character creation and dress up (getting new armor) so I'm exited for the "dress up doll" parts of the game as long as I can wear a good amount of non pervy stuff.

Hopefully some of the best armor isn't bikinis like in Xenoblade >_>

I know other games does it, but not much of them makes so much emphasis on it or make it bullet point in those games from a marketing point.

I was mostly kidding so I wasn't trying to imply anything regarding your reasons (or anyone) to buy the game, but the fact is that LR has a way higher level and focus in fanservice than the standard FF main game.

I'm kinda surprised that on the times the saga is in such a low state they're going that way.

Daisuke Watanabe is only good when he's with Nojima.

End of Eternity certainly did that, though.

In faaaact, I seem to remember Sakaguchi's stage presentation of The Last Story having an instance where he was playing around with the armour changes and ended up having the characters run around in their underwear which made me laugh pretty hard, lol.

She does have a 'shield' on the Cloud costume, it's evident in her animations that she's moving like she has something on her left arm. The substitute visible physical item is a gauntlet, which means that gauntlets are pretty much "shields" in animations.

Her "shield" pose was always her idle combat pose. Even in XIII (no shield) she held her left arm in front of her.

I'm imagining that gauntlets will be a much more aggressive playstyle, and you'll be substituting Block for the Evade skill we've been catching glimpses of.

I have never seen footage of Lightning using a staff or a spear in battle. Go ahead and link it so I can see if the animations are different or not.

Here's the spear from today. It's just shown in the menus, unfortunately. No gameplay yet.

Here's a screenshot of the staff casting animation. Different than the sword casting animation.

Here's a video showing the staff animation in motion.

The staff casting animation seems a tad slower than the sword one, at least to my eye. Anyone have a different opinion?

Agree
X-2 would be pretty good costume for a different character though.

Why is that? There's a point to both costumes. Her X outfit is more conservative because she doesn't know how to express herself like other people due to being raised knowing her lifes purpose was to die preventing Sin. In X-2, she has the freedom to speak and choose what she desires because that's no longer her life's goal. That's why throughout the game we see her adjusting to these kind of freedoms.

I like both equally since they are there to show a certain aspect of her character and I can totally understand preferring X's but I DO think her outfit in X-2 served it's purpose and wasn't just there as a fanservice kind of thing.

I just liked X's(and her personality) more.
X-2's I like alot, just not in comparison.

Because tight mini shorts and a shirt cut down the middle in the front are just there to express the freedom, right, right.
Please.

I agree. I just wanted to see if you meant her outfit didn't serve a purpose but obviously you were just stating which you preferred.

I'm sorry, but are women not allowed to wear revealing outfits? I can understand if we constantly had pandering shots towards her breasts and ass but I don't believe that was ever the case in X-2. You also seemed to be missing my point. Her outfit is a reflection of her changing. You can be against it all you want but that's the purpose her outfit served.
