Wired: Final Fantasy Isn’t Dying. It’s Already Dead

Theatrhythm was its swan song. Goodnight sweet prince, now set aside for MegaTen's dominance in its rightful place as the best modern JRPG series around.

Gotta get dem clicks somehow, why not preach to a choir.

Some silly comments and ill-thought PR, and now the series is dead. Thanks Toriyama.

I wrote an article in 2001 to say FF was dead, after playing FFX.
There has been great rpg since, called FF, but none of them was one. FF identity is more about art than gameplay, as its gameplay varied so much anyway.

From back in the day I remember Square making console exclusive titles and were major players in the console wars. But then again those days we gamers also had fewer options and 3D console technology was still in its infancy. Hell these guys even released a worldwide CGI blockbuster (did that ever turn into a game btw?) if I remember right.

So compared to those heights they might as well be dead. They don't have the same impact or influence they once did, but that doesn't mean they can't sell millions of games either

I sort of agree, the level of apathy for Final Fantasy is pretty stunning.

I won't beat around the bush like the first quote in the OP, XIII killed the series. Hopefully XV can make up for it

The seris started going wrong at xi/xii from my perspective. But back on topic i personally think more accurate breast movment is important as it helps increase immersion by presenting a realistic character model...

hopefully xv helps get final fantasy back to its former glory, though i must admit i have enjoyed playing through xiii/xiii-2 despite them not being anywhere near as good as i had hoped for.

It's hard to argue with his logic.

Boobapalooza says it all, really. This is what Final Fantasy is about these days.

Weird how we can warp the definition of "dead" to whatever we feel like on any given day.

I wish F-zero was only as dead as final fantasy, etc.

Dammit. :( :(

Speaking of dead, we haven't seen a new persona during this entire generation. So, I don't want to hear about FF being "dead".

X-2 is still a better video game than X (The precursor to XIII's linear corridor simulator). That's not a high bar. No amount of focus on the JPop or silly costumes or niche appeal or whatever will deny that little fact.

With a fantastic "A Realm Reborn" less than one month away claming something like that really tells alot about the writer.

Embarassing article.

That hes right?

14 bombed once. Its already a hard sell for any MMO let alone one with the same name as one of the biggest debacles in the history of the genre. The fact they chose to sink more money into that game rather than writing it off was telling in a lot of ways.

IMO, HD killed Final Fantasy.
The increase in graphical fidelity was basically the worst thing to happen to the series.

It's absolutely appalling that one of the biggest and most excitable features of FFXV is the return of an overworld that you can use an airship on.

Just fucking sad what this series has become.

I have lost faith in Final Fantasy, I am hopeful for ARR but tbh I don't see it doing very well in the MMO space.

XV just feels more like they are moving away from what I want from a Final Fantasy game, graphics and cutscenes look great though /rollseyes

final fantasy xii was the swan song for me. it's been seven years and i just can't give a shit about the series anymore. another online game and nomura's sidegame turned proper game aren't sparking any interest either.

I'm not sure what other people think, But I am excited to play the new FFXIV when it comes out. FF Being Dead? its all an opinion, that will get clicks

The franchise itself isn't dead, but the FF8 team. (The guys responsible for 8, 10, and 13,) shouldn't be let anywhere near the franchise ever again, EVER! Honestly, I'm surprised Square hadn't learned their lesson on this after 8, though I suppose 10 wasn't too bad.

I'm enjoying FFXIV ARR however, and I have reasonable confidence in XV.

What lesson were they supposed to learn when the team behind those games produced some of the series best selling titles, while titles not by that team, didn't perform as well?

I think it's dead but only because they been too samey. Too many sequels to unpopular sequels. instead of a sequel to FF7, 8,or 9... How about follow ups to FF13? Also, they went too crazy with remakes and ports to the handhelds.

I think people are making too much of the breast size increase discussion. It's not a big deal.

The series has been on a downward spiral before that. Protagonists that no one can relate to. Years and years of development time with fans only getting scraps of info of the games from reports of trailers shown behind closed doors. Botched projects.... Crap like Dirge of Cerberus. SE has been a mess as a whole.

Final Fantasy isn't a dead franchise but it has lost a large chunk of its popularity. They are going to make a comeback with FFXV, at least for me this will be true.

No, it really hasn't. The problem is that there's such a large stable of games with varying gameplay systems and thematic tones that it's impossible to please everybody now. There will always be fans of a prior game who find the current game disappointing.

Goto and Toriyama were talking about Lightning's cup size and jiggle because they were asked about it in that interview. They didn't bring it up.

Chris also states: "But if in 2013 this is what a Q&A session about Final Fantasy has become, then any claim that the series once had something approaching mainstream respectability done gone and caught the train out of town." He's using one interview and casting a very wide judgement about the franchise because of it. Meanwhile, there are literally dozens of perfectly normal, non-boob-centric interviews about Lightning Returns, Final Fantasy XIV, XV, etc.

Concludes with: "At this point, it’s tough to see a path back to relevance for Final Fantasy, if the caretakers of the series are spending their creative cycles thinking about the particulars of breast physics." Yes, I'm sure all they are thinking about are breast physics. They go into work every day, work 12 hour days and do nothing but think about breast physics. Give me a break.

This is a poorly thought out, inaccurate hit piece based on someone who got all flustered a dev dare talk about sexuality of the characters in his video game when asked about it. I expect way more from Chris.

Yes, they were asked about it, but they also chose to elaborate on it in detail. They, "could," have just stated that there were subtle alterations to the model between games. That would've answered the question, without giving the impression that the team was lewd and disrespectful.

So, yes, while they were asked about it, their response was stunningly idiotic. It was akin to seeing a land mine, and then jumping up and down on it repeatedly.

Not that FF is actually dead, Edge is being sensationalist here.

Maybe not dead, but it's certainly not the golden goose it once was. People thinking XV will redeem the series need to keep their expectations in check - that same mindset was prevalent before XIII's release and we all saw how that ended up.

XII would have been a true masterpiece if they let Matsuno implement his full vision. But SE was scared and afraid of progress.

Common hater.

Then why is it you have tears in your eyes? Could it be... the truth? :P

And it turned their development cycles into 5+ years.

Yup. So are a ton of other huge franchises.

Kingdom Hearts
Devil May Cry
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Halo
Gears of War
Hitman
Splinter Cell

....and the list goes on and on. Should be fun to see almost every company piss on thier franchises in this next generation in the hopes of taking everything special in these franchises and turning it into a joke in hopes of chasing the casual gamer. Pathetic all around.

It really has. Putting out some solid handheld games wasn't good enough, either. SE didn't just drop the ball - they stood dumbfounded as it rolled off the court.

Dragon Quest and Bravely Default all have been done outside Square Enix. SE is done.

I hope it does too, but I doubt it.

I wouldn't be surprised is Square executed the backup plan soon.

FF7 HD Remake

I think at this point it would be the only ace in the hole. I still don't have faith in that either.

Lightning Returns has breast-jiggling?

Apparently so, along with making Lightning's breast bigger.

http://kotaku.com/for-some-reason-lightning-returns-has-boob-jiggling-947463805 said:
Nobuhiro Goto, one of the game's designers, replied, "Toriyama said, 'I want to make them bigger...'" To which Motomu Toriyama, Lightning Returns' director, said with a chuckle, "Don't pass the buck!" (Goto also told Dengeki Online that the decision to change the character's breast size was "an order from Toriyama.")

A follow-up question was asked: Will the character's breasts, um, jiggle?

Toriyama replied that how much her chest moves depends on what she wears.

good lord the gaming industry is just one gigantic emo fest these days.

this is dead, that's dead, everything sucks, some new article about it every single day.

play Call of Duty!

The recent games just damaged the brand, which is the worst thing you can do. Fans might forgive a bad game, but they won't forget a ruined brand.

I pretty much lost interest after FF7.
I don't even regard FF7 that well, but it was okay.
FFX was pretty much the point of no return for me as far as the series was concerned, and everything after that was just cringeworthy or elicited no interest aside from some character design ideas.

Which is really REALLY sad. I used to have such high opinions of Squaresoft, but my how the times have changed..

I don't know if it's dead, really... But it's been off my radar for many years now.

The fact that they decided to give an existing protagonist breast enlargements, and added jiggle to her suggests that they are desperate though.

Reminder: the creative genius behind legendary titles like Final Fantasy V wasted dev time on creating octopus monsters that only attack female characters.

Final Fantasy died when they started making horrible cheese pop songs and then built a game around that.

Bad song which happens to have a game that matches the cheesiness attached to it.

The characters and their designs live down the the level of the songs as well.

"cheesy song first, game second" design does not make a good product.
