Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | August 2013 | Divekicks & Dragons

Worry not. Vita in 2014/15 and beyond ... everyone will eat crow.
I swear people forget and fail to realize that optimization and code effciency is a thing.

Honestly dude... like honestly...

Get Chrono Trigger on NDS. Easily the best version. PS1 has loading in every corner. Very distracting.. Especially when there are better versions out there.

Damn...I don't have a DS, and it was either the Android version (which from reading the reviews, that one doesn't seem to be hot either), or the PS1 version...looks like i'm going Chrono Cross and Legend of Mana. Damn, I wanted to replay Chrono trigger too.

I agree; Most Wanted was ruined for me by the low resolution. Also, I thought the game had massive input lag, but, after playing it on the PC, it turns out the cars just don't feel right (maybe it's just me).

Also, took this GR screen a long time ago because it looked so very suggestive..

Haha, I took that shot too.

If you have a good tablet/smartphone, there is a new NDS emulator for 5 bucks. There is a thread about this, you could ask if there is any problem with Chrono Trigger.

But Bubsy wasn't remotely well-regarded like Rayman 1 was. I agree that it doesn't make sense to compare 2D platformers to 3D platformers, but what you quoted was referring to 2D platformers (specifically 2D mario games). I am with him on the Origins part, though. It's probably my favorite 2D platformer ever, this coming from a MASSIVE of 2D platformers. But better than every 2D Mario by a "reasonable margin"? Nah.

Fair enough, I guess. Origins does a lot of things right and is incredibly polished, but it isn't revolutionary. SMB3 & SMW pushed the genre forward. Nintendo obviously hasn't made a concerted effort to recapture that 2d brilliance, so it's no surprise something else has taken its place. Rayman came years after those. 64 & Galaxy (we shall leave out Sunshine) are now the best in their respective sub-genres. It'd more appropriate to compare them to Rayman 2&3, Ratchet & Clank, Sly, banjo kazooie, Spyro, Jak etc.

Does Lego Lord of the Rings really not have a single hub that I can use to check and access my progress on the various levels?

What? There are multiple hubs, like Bree, the pass of Caradhras, Lothlorien etc.. just go to a shop and choose the level progress option to see your level status.

Not really. I play a ton of PC games on my laptop on medium to low quality settings, most of the time at a resolution of 720p or lower.

I don't think the Vita pulled off NFS:MW that well, only because the low resolution had an actual, negative impact on the gameplay. Cars in the distance would become pixelated and hard to spot making me crash way more often than I should have at top speeds. EDF is fine, and that series was never about the graphics anyway. It's not really open-world though. It's more of an open-arena that takes place in a city.
When I first got NFS, I really liked the graphics, then I saw the traffic, and then I saw the PS3 version. Bomb-o. The traffic is still a problem for me in it, and I've been playing it like a madman. I still enjoy the hell out of the game, it hasn't diminished my fun.
Too much.
.

In the future, we will be wearing helmets to protect us from the quality vita games raining down upon thy earth.
In a perfect world!

Now I kinda feel like a perv.

I know I can see the status from there, but I can't then go straight to that level from that menu even for free play (which would make the hunt for collectibles so muc more manageable). I've never considered going for 100% in a Lego game before, if they're all like this I might not bother again.

EDIT: And... I've just realised select brings up a world map.

I never said that the Vita was incapable of doing a Gravity Rush sequel justice. This whole thing has been about me wanting to see the game on more capable hardware, because the style is so fantastic that it deserves top quality assets and image quality.

Edit: I misread your post. I think the Vita could do the sequel justice (as in gameplay) but not the art style presented in the concept art.

As a fan of the Vita I don't literally want Sony to rob the Vita of one of its best exclusives. But as an artist I'd like to see how far Project Siren could push it on Sony's more powerful hardware.

You just defeated your entire argument with that last line. The style of the Ultimate Ninja Storm games is just as possible on the home consoles as the style of the other games you pictured. There is absolutely no reason why Gravity Rush couldn't adopt a style similar to the Ninja Storm games if the developer wanted it to.
You would be right if naruto games were the rule, not the exception, and gravity rush aimed at their graphics, but it's not the case.

And i could say that for the games i showed there's absolutely no reason why they couldn't adopt a style similar to ninja storm... but they do not ;)

Another thing, do you honestly think that on ps3 we would have got the awesome comic cutscenes or boring normal cutscenes?
Even in this case the hardware matters, obviously the ps3 is able of doing comic cutscenes, but there are unwitten rules and expectations for the ps3 that are different from the vita ones.

RE: open world games on the Vita, it'd be neat if we really do get a port of The Amazing Spider-Man, provided it's the PS360 version. That was a pretty neat, well-populated open works, and it had plenty to do. A handheld version of that would be pretty amazing.

getting pretty tired of all these old indie games you got from steam for a buck or humble bundles...

this better pay off and we get all these studios new games on a universal release day.

Some people being pretty harsh on NSF:MW... I think the game is an absolute marvel for an early release on a hand held.

I think it's incredible difficult initially but I put that down to the old small screen, small analogue sticks thing. I'd actually like to see the option to use the d-pad if desired.

Once you've played it for a while, you get locked in... I hate to think of the faces I'm pulling on the plane when I'm playing that game :)

I'm ok with them. I've played some already on other platforms but will most likely play the ones I liked the most again on Vita (like Lone Survivor for example). The important thing for me about these deals though, is to hopefully cement a relationship between Sony and these developers so we can see their next games on the Vita on day one (like TWD season 2 for example).

Way I see it, people aren't going to buy these all these indie games forever. At least I won't. Last year we bought pretty much everything they threw at us. Now however, I'm pretty picky about what I buy, especially when talking about indie games on vita.

I disagree to an extent; the handling is horrible and the traffic pops-in. This leads to a lot of frustration.

Also, the crashes absolutely suck system-wide. Nothing even close to the awesomeness of Burnout Paradise.

In the case of Nicalis, most of their business seems to be porting/remaking PC indies for consoles and handhelds.

Just thought how awesome a serious, Vita-exclusive 3D-Skateboarding game would be. Not serious gameplay-wise but seriously developed, maybe AA.

Not Tony Hawk or Skate, but a new IP. Not too long but good, sell it for 20€, sell more Levels for 5€ each.

That studio could get experience with skateboarding-games to make an AAA-Ps4 exclusive.

Wouldn't a good skateboarding-Vita game sell copies and hardware? Get on it Sony!

One can dream :D

I adjusted to the handling. The pop-in issue is what lead me to delete it after finishing the most wanted list. I got sick of crashing into objects (railings, lamp polls, overpasses etc...) that weren't there a second or two ago. Good game, but it felt like the Vita couldn't handle it at times.

Bought PJ:M HD, to play it for a third time yesss.
Floating Cloud God looked interesting too so I thought why not that as well.

Edit: I've had three "Preparing to download" errors in a row. I think I'm just going to fully use the webstore and use download queues solely from now on.

Rayman Origins demo was so much fun! Only played the first few levels but I was able to go back and get all the electoons! Definitely going to pick this up eventually.

I know you said not Tony Hawk or Skate, but I can't help but think how awesome a Tony Hawk game (one that goes back to it's roots) would be on the Vita. Small sessions of trying to beat yours and your friends' high scores.

I adjusted to the handling.
That shouldn't have to happen anyway, though. It's a game about driving cars; they could have at least gotten the handling correct. I adjusted to the handling after extended play, but never to the point where it didn't cause me to crash every few minutes.

If you're in the US you should pick it up now, it's on sale.

Eh, I thought the handling was fantastic. Better than any other Criterion game imo.

Someone suggested something like Grid a few posts ago and for me that game is unplayable. People just have wildly different tastes when it comes to driving games, there's nothing wrong with NFS it's just different.

How is the Formula 1 2011 game on the Vita? its currently on sale on psn...

The most important aspects are there. It controls and plays well for a handheld. Plenty events and modes. It's the presentation that's the issue not the gameplay. You never see your crew like in the console version, just sterile menus. Graphics are average, no touch controls at all.

You have to go in with expectations. If you want the ps360 version of f1 in a handheld you'll be disappointed. For me it's served its purpose. A good portable racing game with solid frame rate that is quick to jump in and out of races.

I certainly won't buy stuff like Germinator of DieDieDie but I'll be completely down to buy almost anything I love that makes it's way over from Steam.

A lot of this is going to depend on space + the stupid 100 app limit, though. Since we got PS+ button for cloud saving I was able to delete a good handful of retail release bubbles, but that's not ideal. Just gonna have to keep hammering home the need for 64/128 until it happens.

Because it's not what they're going for.

Yes.

And you're ignoring the fact that Gravity Rush has regular in-engine cutscenes in addition to the comic book panels.

Even in this case the hardware matters, obviously the ps3 is able of doing comic cutscenes, but there are unwitten rules and expectations for the ps3 that are different from the vita ones.

No.

Not you, the car handling in Most Wanted (all versions) is just heavy and feel wrong.

I actually quite like the fact it feels unique compared to other games, you have to turn into corners a little earlier and drift through them. Light use of the handbrake too.

The AI in this game is pretty funny though as they do crash a lot in silly places.

It didn't feel wrong at all to me (keep in mind the cars improve handling when you win a few races and upgrade). With racing games you can't ever satisfy everyone. I prefer it to Burnout Paradise which is more pure arcade in its handling.

I like the NFS handling. Each car feels different, and never too arcadey or simlike. I have GT PSP for my sim, and NFS for everything else. Once you get certain cars down it delivers utter happiness.
