Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

That's a bummer, I thought it would crush in Japan.
I can't believe people are surprised by this, as I posted earlier in this thread:

I don't think the Japanese opening will be that impressive. Godzilla movies and other giant monster movies usually did decent business, and enough to make their (fairly modest) budgets back, but they didn't really light the charts on fire for the most part.

Honestly Toho probably made more money off of Godzilla merchandise most years then the box office of Godzilla movies.

Saw this last night. It was good! The whole scale of the fights were awesome. The Hong Kong fight scene was the best one, better than the disappointing last fight. Some of the acting was stiff and not so subtle, but I didn't see anything that made me cringe like I did in Elysium.

Mako's entrance with her umbrella was badass, but it totally gave me the wrong first impression. I thought she would be a cold, detached badass from her entrance but she turned out to be a fangirl that gets weak in the knees for her crush. To be fair, she still had badass moments.

Due to having a 2nd child about 6 weeks ago we haven't had chance to go to the cinema, despite me wanting to see this.
Finally got to see it tonight, however had to hunt for a showing - ended up in Showcase at Leeds, which is an overpriced crap cinema. But it'd have to do.

Fuck me i love this film. Best film i've seen all year. knows exactly what it wants to be and does it really well.
Just fantastic from start to finish, first time in ages i've come away from a film without having anything to complain about.

I could watch Jaegers vs. Kaiju all day, but unconvinced a sequel is necessary. It would probably end up like Matrix vs matrix reloaded.

I feel the same way, especially since the film was tasteful enough not to set up any sequel bait.

Then again, if Guillermo is passionate about it, it's worth doing. If he produces it and hands it off directing to someone else, I'll still give it a chance regardless.

Saw it, loved it. I feel like seeing it again because I had to watch it dubbed, so I really can't say much about the acting, everything else was glorious.

The movie gains a million points alone for avoiding the most annoying, cringe inducing cliche in movies,
the kiss between the leads at the end
. I don't know what the hell people complaining about cliches are babbling about.

Well, at this point, it's not how much it's grossing at the Chinese boxoffice, it's the dispute of how much this studios get, there is apparently a conflict of interest and the studios are currently getting zilch since China wants it all. It's make the gross a total wash at actually adding to Pacific Rim's bottom line, which completely sucks. I want that sequel!

That dispute was reported to be "almost solved" earlier this week, and as mentioned only about a 2% added tax.

they had 3 versions of the ending there and the audience chose the best one.

$76,450,000 from China's first weekend puts it at 345 million globally. Man, I really want at least an animated series or something. Come on Legendary.

saw this last night with friends at IMAX.

It was amazzzzzzing!!! Loved it, everyone in the audience seemed to love it, but man listening to that Australian character was torture, was waiting for:

crocodile-dundee-knife.jpg

"thats not a knife!"

all movie ugh, everyone laughed each time he spoke (australian here)

Yeah, that's insane. The man's dedicated, though! I like that he carries around his notebook everywhere. It would suck if he accidentally loses it.

That would've been perfect if Striker was the one that fought Knifehead.

Like you guys knows it opened last weekend in Japan. I went to see it today and it was just too much awesome for me to handle.

I'm not that big on blockbusters and such, and I think this one's campaign kicked off pretty late, so it was off my radar for the longest time. The hype got more and more insane as I read about it and watched some trailers and today, it just FUCKING DELIVERED.

This is the kind of movie I thought I would never, ever see. No, I didn't even thought about such a movie in the first place, because of how insane it would sound to pitch an original giant robot stories that uses a ton of Japanese super robot and monster tropes.

Quite honestly, I got really emotional watching it and teared up pretty badly during when
THEY DRAWED A FUCKING SWORD TO SLASH THE EFFING FLYING KAIJU BEFORE RE-ENTERING THE ATMOSPHERE
. The whole fight leading up to this moment was incredible but this was just the topping. Couldn't handle it. Fuck I still can't believe what I saw.

Aaaaaaaah T_T

Saw it in IMAX 3D, English.

Still no Japan numbers?

My sources tell me Legendary Pictures was supposed to announce the weekend number late on Sunday, but they held back. Some interpret that as a sign they're disappointed.

Independent projections estimate it did a tad below 500 million yens or roughly 5 million dollars. Basically, it did no better than Resident Evil Apocalypse.

Sorry guys, China alone can't carry the movie. Hope for a sequel dims.

Japan box office isn't big enough to affect a sequel decision.

Its not like it was only successful in China you know, worldwide it will certainly reach 400m before br/dvd sales. Still good numbers!

I know there is a prequel comic, but they should consider a prequel cartoon mini-series. It would be awesome and could maybe go a long way for building hype to a potential sequel.

Damn, that's shitty. 400m is a pipe dream at this point.

Fuck-awesome movie. Can't help but be disappointed, though, that the only Jeagers and crews that passed the Futurama Silhouette test have no role in the movie. Hoping that the overseas box office performance will bring us a sequel where we find out that Russian and Chinese were only injured and the Jeagers repair-able. The Chinese numbers pretty much guaranteed that they would be more prominent in the (hopeful) sequel, right?

Although I've been known to make BS posts. Am I bullshitting now with these low Japan box office estimates?

Keep the hope alive, Pacific Rim fans.

Yeah, that's insane. The man's dedicated, though! I like that he carries around his notebook everywhere. It would suck if he accidentally loses it.
He lost it in Mexico City once when he was drawing designs for Pan's Labyrinth and writing the story. He left it in a taxi and was lucky enough that the taxi driver tracked him down to give it back to him.

Those del Toro videos in Japan are great.

That would be awesome, but I don't know who would go for it, especially considering the US numbers. The only reason CN would jump on it would be if merchandise sales were huge.

If they could get CN on board perhaps they could even premiere the movies TV debut on the channel.. does CN still do that? I remember them doing it for JP3. But yeah, I realize something like this really won't happen... but if it did, it would be awesome.

Finally saw it here in Dubai. Yeah, the acting was pretty terrible. Who cares?

Oh. My. God.

Rocket punch
is one of the best damn cinematic moments ever.

Now I NEED to see this in IMAX. Problem is, its only available in IMAX 3D here. Argh. I'll bite the bullet.

IMAX 3D is incredible. Enjoy yourself.

I saw it three times in IMAX 3D [$19.99 per ticket, and I treated my sister to the movie as well once, so I essentially paid $19.99 four times]. I regret nothing.

Actually, I take that back. I regret not seeing it a fourth time in IMAX 3D.

Same here (well except I think I already watched it 8 or 9 times, yes I have enough time to watch a movie so many times)

I went on Saturday (cause of K-Day) to watch it in IMAX 3d, and then yesterday I told some friends that didn't watch it to do so, also in IMAX 3D.

Please Legendary, I want more PacRim. Sequel, prequel, more Jaegers, more Kaiju, more drifting, MORE!!!!

Now that I've seen the movie, I can go back and read all the reviews and spoiler stuff I avoided during my media blackout.

Googling for "kaiju", how is this on the first page of hits? (spoilers)

How ‘Pacific Rim’ Got Kaiju Wrong
http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/opinions/how-pacific-rim-got-kaiju-wrong.php
But as kaiju, an important archetype in 20th Century Japanese storytelling, they’re borderline offensive. To explain why I need to go back a bit.
By opening your movie with a walking symbol of American technological superiority saving fisherman from a giant monster, you’re not just missing the point — you’re taunting it. If Bay or Emmerich or Spielberg had directed that scene, I would call it jingoistic bullshit, but coming from the del Toro, a Mexican filmmaker, at the beginning of a film that devotes a lot of thematic energy to multiculturalism, teamwork and respect, it seems like a huge, and insulting, oversight.

I mean, I’m still gonna go see it a third time. But I’m just saying — as good as it is, Pacific Rim is kind of a dick.

Oh god what? "Film school rejects", indeed.

I don't think that the argument he is making applies anymore. Yes, that's what Godzilla was originally meant to be, but meanings change and PR wasn't even the one to do it first. In many stories, Godzilla was turned into a good guy, literally given the title "Defender of the Earth." at points. The Japanese got over the Nuclear power hatred a while ago, it seems.

Edit: Also, I'm lost as to how the Kaiju of PR represent mother natures retaliation of against pollution.
The Kaiju are not naturally born, they're artificial, just organic instead of mechanical, and developed for the purposes of conquest. Really, they are as much machines as the Jaegars are.

Edit 2: And he mentions that Gipsy Danger was able to win because of she was nuclear powered, making nuclear power the key to victory....but that's not quite true.
Cherno Alpha was equally nuclear powered and immune to the EMP, but it got taken out by brute force. Similarly, even if Gipsy Danger had that advantage of immunity had Leatherback used his EMP blast, it really doesn't matter since Gipsy ripped it off before he managed to get another shot off. If it had been digital, the result of the fight would have been the same. Gypsy is the key to victory because of it's nuclear reactor, but only at the end of the movie...though I don't think this would have been a gamechanger either. All Pentacost would then do is strap on another nuke to Gipsy like they did Striker. Nuclear power would have still saved the day, it wouldn't be the reason Gipsy is able to function.

How can this possibly be doing less than amazing in Japan?
It's a nerd movie that women tend to avoid. It's sandwiched between The Lone Ranger and World War Z. Some people might not care for the two overexposed actresses in the movie.

On the other hand it's getting amazing reviews. Word of mouth and repeaters may give it some legs.
Edit: it debuted below The Lone Ranger(2nd week and at 5th place)Bomb bomb bomb booooomb!!!!!

Sequel canceled.

I live in Brazil, so it premiered on last friday. I went to see it today (I think the last movie I went to see in theaters was Iron Man - the first one) and while I immediately regretted my decision (I'm pretty sure this movie was panned and scanned to fit my Movie Theater screen. It's only a 1.85:1, but it seemed weird) and the print quality wasn't that good (a little on the dark side), I was still happy to have paid money to see it.

Now, I don't buy movies physically anymore (I don't even have a BluRay player), but I'd be really interested in seeing the extras for this movie. If only they would sell/rent me the extras along with the digital version... :(
