La-Mulana is absolutely awesome and a steal at $6. It's like the Pitfall we never got. So friggin good.

They've got some other licensing nightmares worked out, they really should with those as well -- the SSI Gold Box games are really important.

I know they would be guaranteed sales from me, but even if they weren't going to be big sellers, I sort of look at some of GOG's catalog as a museum and preservation project, even if that is not their stated goal. Yes, there are (questionable?) sites with abandonware on them but they are generally shitty sites with tons of ads that look like the kind that carry exploits. I'd rather have them on a nice site I can trust like GOG, even if I have to pay.

These are the titles I'd like to see. Since the games are older, you'd have to come up with nice packs of multiple games. Some of them aren't "technically" gold box but they'd make sense to release in this fashion.

Dragonlance Gold Box Pack - The 3 RPGs, plus Dragonstrike. There are some DL action games too but they are generally terrible. Dragonstrike is awesome and I'd love to see a modern game in the same vein (not Lair!).

Forgotten Realms Gold Box Pack - The four Pool of Radiance RPGs, plus Hillsfar.

Eye of the Beholder Pack - EOTB 1-3.

Buck Rodgers Pack - These two games were great and underrated.

One of the problems with these releases is their reliance on code wheels and large "story" manuals, not only for DRM but also to fill in large "gaps" in the game's narrative. Most users would not bother looking at the PDFs so that would be a huge problem. Do any of the existing GOG games work around these kinds of limitations? I know Ultima 6 had you look up answers to questions as part of it's copy protection but I think this was relatively easy to work around.

I'm most surprised that Eye of the Beholder hasn't put in an appearance. While, sure, there's not going to be a *massive* audience for, say, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, EoTB was *huge*.

EotB was not Gold Box. 1 was a smaller, not-gold box and 2/3 had large boxes.

World of Xeen has a separate download that's basically a text list of the passwords. I want to say I've played something where any password would work but I don't recall what. I would generally say that GOG would be better if it had a sort of Steam overlay for the manuals/maps/whatnot, and yeah, those old Gold Box games REALLY depended on them.

As for Buck Rogers, IMO you're better of playing the Genesis version of Doomsday in an emulator. It's been decades but my memories are that it actually played better than the PC version.

Marry me.

Hell yeah! We are very happy to see La-Mulana topping the GOG charts.

Now if only we could get that same level of support on other services!

The guys at GOG rock!

Eurogamer review by Kieron Gillen from RPS HERE.

As a sidenote, I do kind of wish they would actually use the "Classic Gem" promos to focus on games prior to 2000. When I think of "Classic" I usually think of something that was a truly great highpoint in a genre, but also something that is older than 8-9 years old. I haven't complained for a while about the apparent steady shift in focus on GOG, but it would be nice to see them work on refocusing on older titles again.

We're starting to fall behind in noting new releases, aren't we? Last one mentioned seems to be Penumbra Collection, so lemme catch up from there:

$40 for a game on GOG? Really? I know they make that exception for games developed by CDProjekt, given that said company made GOG, but this is developed and published by "Larian Studios", who I've never heard of. What madness is this?

Larian Studios made some a good old game, it's called Divine Divinity. Divinity II (not Beyond) is not bad either but the first is still the best. They also recently did a kickstarter for Divinity: Original Sin which was funded at $1m. They're pretty well known.

I'll just chalk it up to me hating strategy games, then, because I've never heard of them at all.

Those are all RPGs...
GOG's genre listing for the new one explicitly said "Strategy" first, though.

Well, whatever, I'm not big on WRPGs, either.

Which knocks out most of GOG's RPG catalog. =p
Yes. Yes it does.

I don't mind that they keep expanding that genre, since a lot of people are big on it and are undoubtedly happy to see new (well, old) games show up in their catalog on Tuesdays or Thursdays (or whichever of the two is dedicated to old games these days), but I'm never really interested in them. I dunno, I've tried Fallout and Planescape Torment, but the combat doesn't make any sense to me. (I did like the writing I saw in PST, though, which is its commonly-cited strength; I need to finish that sometime.)

Hint for upcoming game(s)

Action game full of gore

adventure from a dev we've not seen before

a thundering great RPG and more

a game inspired by a forever war

ten years, fifteen nearly a score

these are the classics you are looking for

The possibilities... Soldier Of Fortune for an action game full of gore, perhaps?.

Is the thing around his neck a hint as well?

The Enigmatic T (still recovering from the unfortunate katana incident), hints at the upcoming classic releases on GOG.com.

Ok, so we're looking at a range from just after 1993 to 2003. Last line ("these are the classics you are looking for") could be a LucasArts ref, perhaps? Which would mean that maybe we'll finally see a LA adventure ("adventure from a dev we've not seen before"). "a thundering great RPG and more" could be SSI's Thunderscape from 1995, perhaps -- that'd be huge, not because of Thunderscape specifically, but because of SSI. Would love to see more SSI (though some of their best stuff is on the C64's gen).

Well, Disney's in charge now so maybe they they stopped being quite so stupid. I've also heard that they're planning to release blurays of the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy!

I'm really looking forward to playing the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series for the first time in forever.

One thing I've picked up with GoG: The most obvious tease is *never* correct. So "These are the classics you are looking for" really is unlikely to be Lucasarts.

That out of the way, they could easily all be SSI.

Action game full of gore: Entomorph?
adventure from a dev we've not seen before: Veil of Darkness?
a thundering great RPG and more: Thunderscape

a game inspired by a forever war: Presumably something inspired by The Forever War, although I'm not familiar enough to know what that could be. Futuristic, though. Dark Colony? Taar = Tauran?

I can't bear to summon up a new hope that LucasArts will finally come to GOG. :/
I'd be pessimistic with Disney, but nevertheless I can't help but think they're something of a wildcard here. They really may be much more loose with their properties than late LucasArts management was because it simply doesn't matter that much and they actually KNOW THIS and closed LucasArts for that reason. On the other hand, it's Disney and they really may be taking the stance of treating the IP like valuable treasure that can never ever be let loose, no matter how stupid it is to be that clingy. DuckTales is a great example of this really: they got to remake it! But they also can't put it on VC for some reason.

Hmmm, I think you may be right -- also, Entomorph and Thunderscape are both from the World of Aden, so releasing them together would make some sense. I just wish they'd get into providing games from non-PC, like C-64 and such -- would love to see the Phantasie series, Wizard's Crown, Questron, etc. on GoG. I will check later, maybe some of those actually came out on PC. That'd be awesome.

Edit: Ooooh, many of them are on DOS. Sadly they don't look nearly as good as the C-64, Atari ST, Amiga, and Apple II versions, but still...

Oh god, I hope it's SSI.

Even though it wasn't one of the "hardcore" RPGs, if it them then I can't wait to trot through the plains on my horsey in Hillsfar.

Anvil of Dawn Trailer HERE.

I had been waiting for a sale to pick this one up, and now it shall be mine. I recommend this if you are into old classic cRPG Dungeon Master style dungeon crawls.

Wow some nice deals.

Anvil of Dawn is a great RPG, it can be a bit easy once you figure out how to screw with the enemy AI, but it's still one of the better dungeon crawlers out there. Also has the best automap I've ever seen in an RPG.

Etherlords 2 is a great Magic The Gathering clone with a cool RPG campaign where you earn cards through battle, structured similarly to the single player campaign of the old late 90's MTG game.

Silent Storm is one of the best turn based tactical games ever. If you have any love for X-COM or Jagged Alliance it is a *must own*. Best environmental destruction this side of Red Faction Guerilla.

New release: Lords of Midnight

Woah. This is a real, genuine classic, but I thought it'd be outside their remit. I think it *may* now be the oldest game in their lineup.

If they're going through Mike Singleton games, expect Doomdark's Revenge and maybe Dark Sceptre in due course.

Never heard of it, and it's even on the App Store for both iOS and android. Not very surprised it doesn't get mentioned, but nice to see an older title every once and a while. :)
