Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

Yahoo! Not that anyone cares but I called it! Fighting on a biplane, flying around to different Pilot Wings islands!

Maybe this is the new Lylat Cruis. I'm betting the characters won't stop on the land marks.

Probably more like Pokéfloats, since that biplane's going to be too small for four people.

That Biplane looks plenty big enough for four people. Samus is one of the tallest characters in Smash and she looks tiny in comparison.

Four people could easily fit on it, yes. But if the platform is that small through the whole thing, it's going to get hectic as fuck especially with items flying about. My previous choice of words may not have been the best.

Then again it could be bigger than I'm perceiving it to be and the angle is just deceptive.

You know... this reminds me of a question that has been bugging me for years. When Pilotwings was revealed, I've noticed no one was apparently bothered that it featured Miis. I'm kind of shocked since I've seen plenty of people asking for a Pilotwings sequel. Was anyone here bothered by the Miis inclusion?

Asking since I'm just really curious.
I wasn't, but I do recall some on GAF (not naming names - mostly because I can't remember names) up in arms about it taking place on Wuhu Island and not somewhere original, and having Miis to go with that.

For everyone who's thinking of double dipping and getting both copies... how do you feel about the possibility of having to unlock every character twice?
I hope there's some sort of communication between the two systems that could synchronize your character roster! It'd be a real bummer if you had to play through twice just to play as your main.

(Though I'm guessing if you're double dipping in the first place you probably love Smash enough not to mind too much. It'd just be a nice gesture is all.)

That Pilotwings stage is looking better and better, by the way! Woo! Hype +1.

It would be fun. I wouldn't mind the option of it being unlocked in both versions if you unlock it in one.

Multiple biplanes, flying in formation for periods of the level.

Done.

I love unlocking stuff in Smash Bros. It's a huge part of the fun. So unlocking the same characters will not bug me. Especially since every unlockable characters has more than 2 ways to be unlocked nowadays.

By the way, I was revisiting the old Dojo site for fun.

There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now, and Lucas is very similar

Ah... memories :lol

It looks more like the Starfox Venom stage except smaller.

Maybe hang gliders will replace the Arwings!

I'm going back through 64, melee, and brawl to re-unlock all the characters and stages again. So fun for some reason. Being forced to play w/ a limited roster initially is kinda fun, also.

YES!

I agree. I absolutely love the single player content in the Smash Bros games. Shame Brawl's single player isn't all that fun compared to Melee's...

I guess it depends on how different the games' single player modes are going to be from each other.

I'm just gonna play the shit out of the WiiU version and after 10/12 hours, when I'll start being tired, I'll pass to the 3DS one to rest a little bit.

It's gonna be awesome.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. I'll be playing the 3DS version mostly during down times at work, so it's not like I'll really be playing multiplayer much with it. With the Wii U version, I'll be going through it with a couple friends so it'll be enjoyable regardless. I wonder if secret characters will have the same process of unlocking between the two games or if they'll switch it up.

Also that Pilotwings stage is somehow even better than I expected with the inclusion of Wuhu.

I can't wait to unlock everyone twice! The only time I hate it s when my data is lost. With this I'm thinking there are going to be differences with the unlocking criteria.

As one is flying perhaps other planes or hand gliders or things fly alongside the main plane to act as additional platforms.

Or the point rings.

Going through subspace again is a chore, but smash 64 and melee are a load of fun.

I tried replaying Subspace. It is an absolute borefest, I never got far on any attempts at replaying it. Even with co-op it's still boring.

It's weird because I loved Subspace the first time, but I guess the novelty wore off completely.

Am I understanding this correctly -- the Pilotwings stage has the SNES island AND Wuhu Island?! I wonder if they also included one of the N64 levels, like Holiday Island?

Also, the sense of scale in that new shot is amazing. We've had similar stage layouts before, where we're flying on something over a wide open space, but seeing the immense landscape stretching to the horizon really enhances the sense of dizzying, vertigo-inducing height and distance.

And man, the MUSIC. The music is going to be amazing in this stage.

The SSE cutscenes might seem nice in a first playthrough, but they completely break any pacing in replays. I've replayed individual stages of Subspace Emissary many times, but only went through the actual story twice.

There's truly been no bigger waste of development time and resources than the Subspace Emissary. I try not to think about what Brawl could have been without it. Sakurai himself blamed that mode for the cutting of characters.

You and me both.

And in this era where you can transfer your data between the 3DS and Wii U versions of MH3U rather seamlessly, I'd honestly be shocked if something of that nature wasn't included.

The 3DS version likely won't have any trouble selling in Japan. Adding this feature in would just give people more incentive to buy the Wii U version, knowing that they can go back and forth between the two different versions and unlocking stuff pertinent to both versions of the game as they go.

So what you're telling me is that every Nintendo game is actually a Mario game.
If Mario's original intentions came to be this would almost have been true. Mr. Video (as he was originally called) was meant to be a character that would star in all of Miyamoto's games.

I already love this stage, I hope it ends up delivering. Played the shit out of Pilotwings on 3DS.

Hmm this makes me wonder if this is purely pilotwings inspired or more just wii Sports resort inspired, probabaly doesn't matter, and is just both.

edit: duh I see now that the run way is from snes pilotwings. cool

Yes, it did.

http://www.geocities.jp/bgrtype/gsl/words2/dairantosmabrax/smashbrothersx.html

In the third paragraph from the top, Sakurai talks about fans wanting more characters, but things like the Subspace Emissary ate away more time than he had expected and as a result characters had to be cut.

That paragraph doesn't say that directly. It does talk about the 39 character count being a limit and hard to reach, and then goes on to talk about the other things done for the game to give more variety, and mentions SSE as the main example there, but, in spite of that, he seems to talk about 39 as a high count by itself. He doesn't acknowledge that the had to cut parts of the game to put SSE in. What's even the source of all that text anyway? Why isn't that text in an official site?

Edit: Still, obviously, if there hadn't been SSE or any equivalent single player content in its place, they could have added more multiplayer exclusive content, but that's different from saying that they had to cut planned things for it.

I'm so happy at how amazing the Pilotwing stage looks so far. The Wii U stages revealed beforehand have been a bit underwhelming, hopefully we get more stage and item reveals to ramp up the hype soon.

Correction, three new stages that got announced on the website.

1. Pikmin stage
2. KI:U stage
3. Pilotwing or Wii Resort stage

However you might be right if they kept the pattern.

Oh right, how I forgot this when it appeared on the daily screenshots so many times. lol

It will be nice if we get a 3DS stage now. Maybe a Pokemon one.

Or it's like Venom, where you're only ever on the one aircraft. Mix it in with Mute City, and how touching the ground hurts you and hurls you upward when the intended platform (the plane) is scrolling by it.

Yeah I did too I think but it could be other stage that I mentioned in other thread. It could be like new halberd.

Ah... memories :lol

I remembered those ole darned days of Ness.

Oh man, if the plane also visits Holiday Island from Pilotwings 64, this stage will be truly complete!

I really want to see that happening. I would love to see pure Pilotwing stage but its possible. However I have a feeling that this stage would represent Mii so it might fall under Mii or Wii series which the stage would be new version of halberd stage where snes Pilotwing would be the taking off and landing process of the stage then the plane would flew around the Wuhu island as the stage to show off Mii's home.
