US singer Kelly Clarkson bought the turquoise and gold ring for £152,450 at auction last year, outbidding the Jane Austen's House Museum.

Culture minister Ed Vaizey put an export bar on it until 30 September.

lol I don't get this situation at all but it makes me laugh. Then the whole nation gets together and has a big fundraiser to match her bid like she was trying to run off with Air Bud. Poor Kelly Clarkson.

I'm glad England is so honorable when it comes to making sure artifacts rightfully stay in their home countries.

Oh, wait...

I LOL'd for real!

But really, she bought the damn thing. Let her take it home. It's not like she's going to destroy it or something.

I agree it belongs in a museum. I don't think something so rare and valuable to literature should be in some music star's home. I realize money can get you just about anything, but you can't replace history.

Why even put it up for auction in the first place? If the idea was to have it go to the museum, why not just sell (or hell, GIVE) it to them?

I doubt whoever owns it is super rich. All of Austen's work is public domain now.

Jane Austen's ring is "valuable to literature"?

Kelly Clarkson is still around?

Apparently so.

Get ouT!

Feel sorry for Kelly. The ring obviously meant a lot to her if she would wear the replica her Fiance had made to the inauguration. They should never have let her bid if they didn't intend to let her keep it.

It's not like the ring wrote Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen did. If it makes you feel any better, it's not like it would probably fit on Clarkson's finger anyway.

Weird to see Kelly Clarkson in any kind of drama. She's one of the few pop stars that manages to avoid controversy, except her battle with Clive Davis.

Not sure why Kelly Clarkson is being ridiculed here... it was the Austen family that put the ring up for auction, so they're the ones who are being cavalier with respect to the historical significance of this ring.

I feel like I'm missing something about the importance of the ring, other than the person it belonged to. Aren't her works more important than her ring? Why is this a big deal?
