Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

Hey, I like Knack!

The little guy (or big guy in some cases) has personality.

So do I. A free copy with every purchase would mean more people (especially those that had no interest in playing it) would get a chance to enjoy it. From what I've heard, those that have previewed it have had an overall great experience with Knack. I do think the days of free physical pack-ins are over. Wii Sports will probably be the last one.

My issue with Knack is that, from the footage I saw, the world felt a bit lifeless if that makes sense. Might be due to being an early build

please do, i'll help you
No need, this one is kind of ironic. Not that there's anything wrong with it, mind, but given that you're acknowledging the PS4's impact on the XBO in that post that you're now trying to downplay here...well, you see where I'm going, I hope.

More to the point, you seem moved/excited by the HUGEness of the possible EA FIFA deal. Which, again, nothing wrong with it, but why take others to task for the same kind of response to other announcements?

I agree with this. I have a hard time mustering up much anger about it because I've had PS+ since it launched and would have it anyway... but on an intellectual level I just do not agree with paying for online play. Especially since it is monetized in so many other ways already. We get ads, we get DLC, we get to buy games straight from them which makes them more money, we buy games in the first place because they have an online mode we want... to charge to play online sucks.

I just don't have any anger left. But intellectually i'm right there with you.

The way they went about it was fucking brilliant though. I'm almost positive IGC is the Trojan horse to the online pay wall. There's zero guarantee PS+ will stay nearly as great with its almost assured uptake in members but tons of people that said they'd never pay for online will do it now.

I know what you mean, but the only story bits we've seen are from the initial February announce. I imagine the story will engage players a bit and breathe some life into that world. That's the hope at least.

I think Sony will price Knack below the usual $60. It doesn't seem to be such a high budget game, and keeping it cheaper than most games will help it reach a broader audience. Mark Cerny himself sees it as a secondary game for the family, where people buying the system will immediately go after the must-have AAA triple and purchase Knack after as a game for everyone in the household.

it wasn't just the footage. the demo itself was incredibly dull. the level design was nearly nonexistent, and every gameplay segment consisted of get to locked off area -> beat up the guys -> proceed to next locked off area. this is pretty standard stuff in a brawler, but the fighting mechanics were extremely basic.

There is no chance that Knack isn't thought of as a disappointment overall. The fact that Cerny is attatched to it has put expectations so much higher than what the game ever tried to be. It's kinda like Calling All Cars - people were so excited about a Jaffe downloadable game and then it was just this simple sort of old school game and it was widely panned.

I'd be surprised if Knack makes it out of the 60s on metacritic. It will be the launch game the press shits on to seem like they are tough reviewers. It will also feel rushed. But... I think it will make a certain sect of people really happy - and I expect to be in that group. I love 3d platformers. I can play Mario 64 or Jak and Daxter all day, every day... and while I don't expect Knack to be as great as those it will be really fun to revisit that style of game.

Brace yourselves though guys. It's going to get absolutely shredded by the press and by microsoft fans looking for a weakness to troll.

Tbh, I'm partly to blame for us having to pay for online today, as are I'm sure many of you are too. Microsoft made how much, $4.5 billion plus revenue from gold subs? Sony made what, a few hundred million from PS+? That is a gulf I'd imagine Sony could simply not afford to let go this time around. I mean... $1.2 billion Microsoft made alone this year off of it.

Apparently tens of millions of gamers thought it was ok to pay for online and they took note.

All I'll say is that Sony has at least been more generous with their offering and given us a load of free games, content and discounts for that yearly fee, so it is still considerably better value.

Add to that, Sony could have fucked us all by going DRM this gen, but instead because they didn't, both consoles now offer so much more consumer choice and value proposition. I'm big on trading in games towards the value of new ones. Can't really afford to buy new titles on launch days month in month out otherwise, so no DRM was pretty titanic for me.

I think you're the first PS+ subscriber I've seen on this board that doesn't defend Sony on this. Respect!:) And good points btw, I know you get discounts and get to keep playing some games for free... while paying (doh!)... but I just want that basic functionality, online multiplayer, and I want it unlocked on the console by default without the need to start a subscription whenever I want to try out a game online. It really annoys me. Especially when everything else about the console is awesome. A stumble on the finish line.

"BE HAPPY FOR PEOPLE that gets a free game, stop with the haterade."

Then he comes to this thread to poop on people for being thrilled and excited for an almost universally lauded, significant video game moment.

we could do this all day. in the end, MS reversed their policies so i dont see a difference between the two consoles besides the price which is offset by kinect

Yep. I mean it's not like the combat etc looked bad or anything but it felt like a R&C game with not much going on in the environment. With, so far, not having any other weapons other than melee moves, they need to expand on that a lot too in order to be really interesting. As you said what showed was rather basic

What game announcements is everyone waiting for?

I have my preferences - and they side with Sony in the console world (though I've been a PC gamer since my first 286 sometime around 1990)... but i try not to be irrational. Sony does stupid shit. Microsoft does good shit. Like everyone shitting on Microsoft for potentially having FIFA as a pack-in... I didn't understand that at all. I thought it was a good idea for MS. It adds $60 of value and likely only costs them about half of that (buying in bulk). It's smart and it takes a bit of sting of the price. It doesn't mean MS wins the launch or that Sony is doomed - but it's ok to look at things like that and say "Smart."

And when I learned that sony was charging for online I said "dumb." I hated the "well it doesn't affect me" people when we were arguing about DRM so I'm not going to take the "well I have PS+ anyway so it doesn't affect me" approach to paying for online. On a literal level it doesn't affect me - sure - but it's shitty for people it does affect and there's no reason to make excuses for Sony. It's a cash grab. We can argue that microsoft makes worse cash grabs but that's not the topic...

I'm enticed by this game for two reasons, neither of which we've seen any evidence of: 1. Cerny saying they are after a Pixar-like story element and 2. Cerny saying the 'hard' difficulty will offer old school challenge, and will not just raise enemy health and decrease player health, but rather tighten combat and combo timing windows, etc.

So I would agree completely that what we've SEEN from the game is rather bland and frankly not exciting, but for now I'll cautiously trust that Cerny's made his vision a reality with Knack.

Which is why my beloved PC gaming will always be there and will never let me down
Yup I'm going PC too, and WiiU, for online gaming this gen. It sucks to not get to play the console exclusives online, unless they're on WiiU, but most third party games will be on PC and probably run better too so it's no big loss.

There's no "us" Everyone makes their own choices.

For people like me, paying MS for their online was a no brainer when looking at what Sony was offering for free. The last time I used it was around Uncharted 2 and even then it was miles behind in what LIve offered.

Clearly, Sony feels that their service is now on par and thus want to charge for it.

Flip it around the other way and your beloved Sony would be charging for the service day 1 while MS would be scrambling to get user on a subscription model of some sort by providing other value (free games for as long as you hold the sub).

Sony and MS ultimately do what they feel is best for them and their shareholders. This corporate romanticism on gaf about Sony/Nintendo/MS is so far from reality, it's no wonder they can all PR their way out of anything.

Agent isn't dead.

So, like, are we just going to keep posting in here until the presser? I assume I'll sleep at some point but I can't even concentrate on playing games or reading right now. I just keep looking at this thread like something is going to happen.

Launch hype is a scary force.

Banned

Ouch. No point in bringing that kind of discussion here to be honest, seems to start unnecessary discussions that have been brought before.

can you explain why he got banned? i'm a new member, and I don't want to get banned so I need to know what he did so that I make sure I don't do the same.

Prepared to be heartbroken.

Oh, I'm not expecting either of those games to be honest, although there's a greater chance of us seeing Agent than there is us seeing TLG.

Those are just 2 of the games I want to see, as well as some new IPs.

Last year they showed two SCEJ games during gamescon... RAIN and PUPPETEER . So who knows.... Maybe TLG?

I want a reboot of a PS1 or PS2 franchise. Sony seems to be making us very nostalgic for those games again, as evidenced by the design choices and overall marketing of the PS4. I'm 17 (kind of young, I know) and would love to play a modern day version of something like Ape Escape. Only real memory I have of it was playing a demo on a PlayStation Underground disc in the late 90's.

This is how I feel exactly.

Except of course that part about Agent not being dead, which is huge news and you just slid it in here like "no bigs, dog".

What the hell am I saying? I need sleep.

EDIT: And when somebody with inside info like FamousMortimer is saying "I keep looking at this thread like something is going to happen," that means it might be time to pack it in for the night. For me, anyway.

In other real news, I am pumped Sony is getting another sweet F2P game on board. I am legit excited for playing Warframe on PS4. I sampled it on PC and really enjoyed it.
