Sony Gamescom Press Conference Thread: Let Us Dream

The pacing of the conference was off, game after game without really seeing much, coupled with camera work from hell.

Looking at it now I am happy over all.

No, I don't think it's a problem. Developing stuff to get ready for a show is an extremely time-consuming process that diverts attention from actual development. If the developer doesn't have anything at a polished, playable point, it's especially pointless. You don't need an announcement trailer twice, and they're not going to help themselves by forcing something out to make a show deadline when they were just at a show 2 months ago. Do you expect a new round of AAAs announced every 3 months or something?

Holy shit.

It has been more than 3 months since the reveal of the PS4.

Camera work was terrible, nothing new or exciting except the vita price drop, and memory card price drops. Overall I'm very disappointed, but I wasn't expecting much anyways.

After seeing that conference I'm not sure whether to go Xbox One or PS4. I didn't see the Microsoft Conference but I did see the EA conference, and that conference alone made me want one. I don't care about Kinect if it has Dead Rising 3, Titanfall, and PvZ Garden Warfare.

I still have till November to make my decision but yeah disappointing conference.

On Everybody goes to Rapture and Shadow of the Beat, we can't say anything about those games since they showed no gameplay whatsoever. That should never be allowed in a conference IMO. Final Fantasy 15 is the proper way to announce a game. Notice how they actually showed gameplay on their reveal.

You will get banned.

That was terribly underwhelming. Seems like they're trying to tell us that indie games are as good as their AAA titles.

Nah, they're obviously better.

Seriously tho, what is this false equivalency of indie < AAA. Both have their good and bad; just say AAA personally appeals to you more and be done with it.

You're getting the console about 14 days after the US, why are you complaining?
Because we're getting the console 14 days after the US? Will be annoying during those 2 weeks when half the people on gaf are playing next gen games and we're still waiting. Not a huge deal or anything but it's a bit frustrating

I love Sony's focus on indie games. While I understand that not everyone wants to try something out of the ordinary, the indie titles presented are some of the best. Isaac being my personal favorite of the bunch. It was a relief to see these games, because AAA titles have seemed to hit a brick wall. Very few innovators left. (Personal opinion, of course.)

Eh, no real surprises and I wasn't honestly expecting anything big from Sony in terms of AAA announcements. Perhaps a bit too much focus on indies, though I'm happy to see the support of course.

A bit letdown about the Vita announcements at least in regards to the price drops on the memory cards, which to me is one of the big problems the system has along with the lack of system sellers to encourage new buyers.

Was honestly surprised by the release date on the PS4. October made sense to me at least. Oh well.

Were people really expecting announcements from studios like SSM and ND though? I'm actually expecting reveals on those to be at the VGAs since they've done a few reveals like that the last couple years.

Fire the Cameraman or the producer behind that mess this show was !
The show was decent but the constant switching between cameras was AWFUL!
Why do i want to watch the crowd as a new game trailer is being shown ? :I

Very boring conference. Only things that captured my attention were the announcement of N++ and that Rapture game. Watch_Dogs looks improved from the E3 footage too. If that was truly running in-game on the PS4, then that *may* sway me towards the PS4 version instead of PC. It's nice that Sony is giving indies all this love...but I'm starting to wonder if they are focusing TOO MUCH on the indie scene. Most people still prefer the bigger budget games, Sony. Minecraft aside, indies are more of a nice complement, a niche, and their games are often experimental.

There was also too much time spent on PS3 and Vita. Most people who actually watch such conferences are tired of PS3, and most people do not care about Vita.

LittleBigPlanet Hub for PS3 was just plain dumb.

Rime looks pretty but I saw nothing gameplay wise that looked compelling. I'd like to see more of that game though. Shadow of the Beast...eh, the footage didn't look interesting or informative. War Thunder isn't my cup of tea, BUT I can see that game capturing a decent market.

The PS4 UI still needs work. Parts of it look tacky, and I noticed some minor sluggishness while the person was navigating it. As far as the on-screen keyboard is concerned, I would've preferred a keyboard interface similar to the one in Steam's Big Picture Mode.

I was on the fence about keeping my PS4 preorder. Fortunately for Sony, I've decided to keep it, partly because I'm not expecting a price drop for a couple of years.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and terrible camera work...

I was really hoping for at least a few AAA signature Playstation exclusives.
Many of the indie games they showed looked cool but IDK, they'll come to other platforms.
Infamous continues to look good. Rime was a nice surprise.

But overall, the conference was pretty boring. =\

Anyway, despite the poor conference, I'm still very excited and will be keeping my pre-order. Microsoft have yet to show me anything that would make me want to buy their console, at least for the time being.

Hopefully, I should have both by 2015.

Rime and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture were sweet announcements. Vita getting a price cut was good, finally getting a next-gen release date was also nice, even if it wasn't my October 29th guess. So, overall, I would say it was okay. Nothing that got me super hyped, but like I said some good things.

My favorite conference this year is still the February PS Meeting. That one got me the most pumped with the announcements, but I suppose that's to be expected since that's where they showed their main first-part launch games.

Anyone reasonable would have already known Sony wasn't going to be announcing any more big AAA titles but the absolute flood of titles announced one after another caught me off guard frankly. I almost thought, "How the hell am I going to play all of these damn games on Vita/PS4!?"

My takes

  • All these indie games are starting to feel a bit bloaty. The majority of indie titles are not doing anything new and I'am sure the vast majority of people have played very similar types of games plenty of times. Its a good thing having good indie support but having a line up flooded with titles the vast majority wont care about does not add value and seems rather pointless.I suppose the term ''quality not quantity'' fits my stance.
  • So Sony Santa Monica + naughty dogs are developing games! What is this? an announcement of unannounced games being developed?
  • Is the remote play feature supported by all PS4 games or not?
    Jim Ryan said
''Almost all PS4 games are playable using remote play''
    and then Andrew House said
''All PS4 games will be playable using remote play''
  • Which is it Sony

  • The OS interface looks functional, but its not that slick and could be a bit faster.

Yeah I forgot to mention they definitely have to fire that wannabe hollywood camera person. Who gives a fuck what the crowd is doing when there's a game on the screen?

shadow of the beast being passed off as an indie game? wow...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi_gCE8M0Lc

looks like PS4 GoW to be honest...

I didn't say it looked like an indie game, I said they didn't show anything of worth with a non gameplay trailer. It did give off a vibe that it will be a low tier game not worth mentioning when it comes out though.

Gotta agree on the lackluster performance of the presentation compounded by the horrible camera work.

The overly time wasting bit on the indie stuff was unfortunate too, considering it could have been used more to show off what both the VITA / PS4 could do instead. Since thats what the average consumers will care about and not the various indie titles.

I thought it was a great conference. They have a solid launch for an amazing console on the way. Looking forward to the day I get my PS4, but it will likely be a few months after it is out.

PS4 is going to be chock full of content, it's almost overwhelming. MS has a stranglehold on the big franchises, but they're on the PS4 also so who cares. it just makes the conferences seem a bit out of balance.

After this conference, I'm contemplating just straight up canceling my PS4 and getting an Xbox One. How is it possible that MS was able to beat Sony when all they had was a presser? I guess Sony can only do well when their competition fucks up, but when they are on equal ground then they don't know what the hell to do.

Well, at least your lack of an XBO preorder was a reason MS changed tact. Actually, it was a lot of lack of preorders that forced them to change tact.

And of course, Jimmy Fallon.

Neogaf has been down for me since the stream started so I missed all of the threads here as it went on :(

Anyway, I thought it was a good show - much preferred it to their E3 showing. Not sure why people are shitting on it so much.

As someone who is on the fence for next gen, I found their conference underwhelming. Maybe it was the presentation, or the delivery, but all I saw were a lot of indy games. Yes that's exciting, but I get the feeling most will launch on ps4 and make their way to xb1 later anyways. Are Rime, Everybody Goes to Rapture or Shadow of the Beast AAA games, or PSN? Can we see a full game of Killzone MP? Why did Ubisoft get so much stage time for stuff that was already announced (ok not the movie deal, but did anybody think "Oh I need to get a ps4 now!" when they heard that?).

Again, coming from someone who still hasn't decided, it felt like Sony sat back after taking control from Microsoft after E3, instead of going for the kill. The Order 1886 and Infamous: SS have me very interested in the ps4....I guess I'm just waiting for a game that makes me say "I have to own a ps4/XB1 just for that" the way that Halo did for me with the 360.

Boring? Best Gamescom conference ever. They showed new games, new IP's, announced the release date. Usually gamescom doesn't get this kind of announcements.

By the way, Sony conference in comparison with MS proves me that MS show pretty much every they had at E3, i expect from Sony new IP's and new info on highly anticipated games at TGS while MS probably will show Ryse again.

I am honestly kind of glad at fewer $50 million+ budget games they're showing. Gives me hope that this industry isn't going to implode on itself and we can finally go back to PS2 level budgets where so many games could co exist and shine to their strengths.

It was a mixed bag overall. Structure of the conference was all over the place, and the camera work was abysmal. Why did they keep cutting to panning shots of the crowd when it should have been direct feed all the way during the trailers? What the fuck was going on in the production booth or whatever you call it. And all that needless time devoted to Assassin's Creed IV and Watch Dogs... AGAIN! Fuck off Ubisoft.

At least a bunch of interesting new games were shown. Murasaki Baby, Rime, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture; I could barely keep up with all the announcements. Murasaki Baby in particular, that looked right up my alley. Price cut for the Vita, finally a release confirmation for the PS4, and another ace new trailer for Second Son - the game that keeps on giving.

Very mixed bag.

Sony pretty much is showing all games for launch window. They want you to buy the system now.

If they announce what the other studios are working on, that'll make people want to wait until those games come out to purchase the console. That's how I see it anyway.

Murasaki Baby looks great. So do several of the other indies that we were bombarded with. Psyched the new game by Housemarque is so far into development!

Also, Shadow Fall multiplayer looks really great. I haven't enjoyed any online MP since KZ2.

This was disappointing. More than 50% of the time was dedicated to PS3 and Vita, and the lion's share of PS4 content was made up of indie stuff, and slightly higher budget indie stuff. And let's not forget the camera director constantly cutting away from direct feed trailers with a super zoomed out shot of the screen. What the hell?

Gonna get in before I get kicked again...

I thought that it was an awesome showing today. They showed loads of games, gave us a date and shared some interesting things (such as the broadband deals, cross platform discounts, etc). To the Debbie downers in this thread, what exactly would have made you happy today? Jesus you're a tough crowd lol.

Didn't watch the conference, but I caught up on the news. I'm pretty happy with what they showed. Lots of games shown, yeah they're indies. I love indies though, probably buy them more than anything else.

Starbound on PS4 makes me want a PS4 this year, rather than my plan to survive on all the current gen content until January/February. I spent so much time on Terraria PSN, Starbound's going to be ridiculous.

All those indie games have me excited. I don't like PC/Mac gaming for various rational and irrational reasons, so I'm totally hyped for the huge supply of titles coming to PS4.

Very cool looking Sony digital games too. Resagun, Rime, etc.

Whoever was in charge of camera switching was obviously from a television background had no clue that it was important to show the games during the gameplay moments, not random extended crane shots of the crowd that you throw in during TV shows to stop people getting bored.

Good conference, too many crowd shots ruined some of the trailers and gameplay though. Great showing of games. I liked a lot of what was shown. So glad Minecraft, Starbound and Rogue Legacy are coming to PlayStation consoles; they were much requested.

Some of the responses to indie games here are what I would expect from GameFAQs or 4chan, not GAF. Pathetic.

Fire the Cameraman or the producer behind that mess this show was !
The show was decent but the constant switching between cameras was AWFUL!
Why do i want to watch the crowd as a new game trailer is being shown ? :I
Fire the director and/or vision mixer, not the camera operator.

The camera work was infuriating. Why the fuck do I want to see the crowd in the middle of a game trailer?

What they showed was good though.

The upside:
  • Indie love
  • Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - A spiritual successor to the acclaimed Dear Esther.
  • Rime
  • Shadow of the Beast reboot - Amiga nostalgia in God of War's clothes. I'm hopeful but sceptical. I wonder if some of the old members of Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool are involved? If they are, that would definitely increase my interest for it.
  • Housemarque's Resogun for free at launch.
  • Helldivers looked somewhat similar to Dead Nation, which is definitely not a bad thing.
  • The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth for free next year.
  • Significant discount for those that buy a PS3 version of some of the upcoming games, and want to buy a PS4 version as well. Good gesture, eventhough it doesn't concern me personally, as I probably won't be buying any of those games in the first place.
  • No paywall for entertainment services, which was already known, but it was still nice to hear it confirmed.
  • Entertainment services announced for Europe.
  • Minimalistic and stylish UI, like the XMB, without obtrusive ads. Hopefully there's some change in the background, like on the PS3 depending on the time of day or year, or a possibility to change the color; "Any color you like, as long as it's black."
  • Launch in 32 countries, including Finland.
  • The hilarious jab at Microsoft's 180 turn regarding the DRM tactics, and the crowd reaction.

The downside:
  • Mere confirmation that ND, SSM and other Sony studios are working on new games (well, doh!), but none of them were shown.

We need a summary thread for folks who didn't see the stream.

Great post by the way.
