Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Total meh title for me, but according to this, 5PB announced Bullet Soul -INFINITE BURST- for the Xbox360 at a Phantom Breaker demo in Akihabara today. No details on the game nor release date yet.

Awesome news! Bullet Soul is one of my favorite "brainless" shooters. Sometimes I just want to blow shit up and not worry about scoring, combos or whatever.

Yeah, $5 and the Nintendo Direct gave Recca some serious time and coverage highlighting the game.

Make sure everybody buys it for their 3DS so we get more cool things like Mother, Shantae and Recca!

Might get it on the 3DS just to have some portable shooting action. Action looks insane, but I wish the soundtrack was better.

Sorry if this has already been asked - skimmed a few pages and didn't find anything.

I'm putting together a new computer/desk setup, and was planning to give myself the option to rotate monitor(s) to play shmups in tate. I have two screens: a pretty small/light 22" 16:9 LCD with HDMI that I connect consoles to (a Viewsonic VX2260wm), and a heavier 27" Apple Cinema Display I connect my computer to. Both of them have VESA mounts, so I was considering replacing the existing stands with something that would let me easily rotate them 90 degrees. Since I play horizontal stuff too, I can't dedicate either screen to tate - I'd need to be able to easily rotate back and forth anytime.

I'm looking at a couple possible scenarios:

  • Both monitors mounted to the desk, either with plain stands that sit on the desk or with clamp-style mounts
  • Rotatable wall mount behind the desk

Anyone used anything that they could recommend?

Can someone explain to me the Recca love over Konami's Crisis Force (both for Famicom)? Recca throws a ton of sprites on screen at once, sure, but Crisis Force actually has some snazzy backgrounds. It's also no slouch in the bullet hell dept on Hard either.

Kind of an aside, but this is definitely the thread for it...

I was pleasantly surprised to find some "newer" shooters at Funspot last week when I was there. They have Sky Shark, Twin Cobra, Lifeforce and a handful of others. In past visits, I didn't see things quite that "new" in the collection. Very happy to have played them standing in an arcade with 80's music in the background. :)

Also... a guy was going for the Super Mario Bros. record. Camera setup and everything. Someone else was taping Donkey Kong play earlier in the day. I love Funspot.

I don't know a word of Japanese, any tips on how to order it? I imagine after that I'd use Tenso, so maybe I should register there first to get "my" Japanese address, right?
I mean, should I just put the amazon page through google translate or something? Sorry for my newbness.

You'll need a tenso account and an amazon.jp account. You'd enter your Tenso address as the mailing address when you place the order through amazon.jp
Amazon.jp has English language option, so no need to google translate.

Set up Tenso first. That site makes it very easy now that it auto-populates your address and makes it easy to input into amazon.co.jp.

Then order.

Then two days later it will show up at Tenso's Tokyo address. Be prepared for about a 1600-2000 yen service fee/shipping fee for a single game. So about $50-55 for the game delivered via EMS.

What do you guys think of nano assault neo for wii u? Been thinking about buying it, but im worried it might be a one and done type shooter like the pixeljunk games.

Where is this magical place you call Funspot?!?

The closest thing I found near me is a place called Yestercade - an amaazig retro arcade, but sadly they only have a couple of shooters (Time Pilot 84 and Xevious IIRC).

It's in New Hampshire and is the site of the International Classic Video Game Tournament each year for the past 15. It's also seen in the movie The King of Kong. Keith Apicary's Neo Geo MVS is there for you to play (the one in the video...).

http://www.funspotnh.com/

It's also the site of the American Classic Arcade Museum.
http://www.classicarcademuseum.org/

It's absolutely one of my favorite places on earth and I've made a trip there each year for the last three. I really am never disappointed. It's awesome.

I still have never went to Funspot, even though its relatively close to me (1½ hour drive). I actually went to Weirs Beach this summer hoping to go to Funspot afterwards. But the beach and what appeared to be the rest of the town was suffering some power outages that day...

I've been to Pinball Wizard a few times.

They just got in an R-Type cab. There's also a Raiden 2 cab and some other shmup I don't remember.

Mostly it's classic stuff like Pac Man and Donkey Kong, and 90's Capcom fighters. They've also got some of the standard SEGA stuff like Virtual-On and Daytona USA.

It's a nice way to kill an afternoon. Sadly they seem to have gotten rid of their CvS2 cab.

Funworld in Nashua has a Strikers 1945 II cab.

Ya gotta go, man. Also, there's a place that recently opened in Pelham, NH http://www.pinballwizardarcade.com that's more focused on pinball. I didn't get there this time but intend to check it out next time I'm up there.

I went to Pinball Wizard regularly when they first opened up. Even went there on opening day with a friend during a snowstorm! I do admit not being too big into pinball so a lot of it is lost on me, but its it's definitely well worth a visit if you do. Don't forget to visit the sub shop next door if you visit (Suppa's). They're awesome.

I think the shmup you were thinking of was probably Viper Phase 1?

They got rid of the CVS2 machine?! Ugh. That was one of my main games to play whenever I visited along with Pac-Man Versus. Part of the reason why I went there a lot less is their lack of care to their fighting games cabs (that and they stopped doing fight nights). They keep the pinball and stuff nicely maintained but you know there's something is up when Tekken 3's controls are laid out SNK-style. I even donated an iL competition stick / buttons to put in the CVS2 machine and they ended up putting it randomly in other machines weeks later...

Does Funworld still have the Zero Gunner 2 machine? I haven't been there in ages!

Thanks guys! Going to do that since the normal sku isn't much cheaper if at all. Also ordered Muchi Muchi P/Sweet The Best from Yesasia. I wonder what I'm missing as far as region free/EU 360 shmups go.

This is my list so far:

Owned:

Ikaruga
Radiant Silvergun
R-Type Dimensions
Omega 5
Strania
Guwange
Galaga Legions/DX
Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Sine Mora
Deathsmiles
DDP Resurrection
Akai Katana
Bug Princess 2
MMP/PS
Under Defeat HD

Missing:
Kof Sky Stage (good?)
TH Excelica (barf!)
Space Invaders Extreme (got the DS games + Knob Controller attachment, will stick with those I think, love 'em)
Raystorm HD (don't like it, I want it's prequel tho and the scrapped 2D version of RS :P)
EspGaluda II (only Cave's I'm not fond of cause I can't seem to wrap my head around the scoring system haha)
DDP S (will wait for The Best, missed amiami sale, sigh)
Bullet Soul (waiting for new version to come out)
that Neo Witch something 2D SS game on XBLA (I don't mean Strike Witches)
Ginga Force & Eschatos double wonder pack (dunno... They seem so visually bland...)
Shooting Love 10th Anniversary (gonna order it, have XII Stag on PS2)

Too bad about Raiden IV and Raiden Legacy (which I own on iOS + iCade), luckily I own Shikigami III on Wii.

That it, right?

Also, finally pulled the trigger on DDP Maximum on iOS! Goddamn its lackustre demo but I should've listened to those recommending it to me before. Again, the demo doesn't do it justice at all while only overblowing the game's "problems" (for me at least). I'm getting past the visuals which I don't like much but I'm becoming acquainted to more and more with each play, and the game is utterly fantastic.

I need more friends to compete with on Game Center tho, out of my 300+ gaffers only 17 have DDP M.
My Game Center handle is Dash Kappei GAF, send me a friend request guys (or give me yours so I can add you if you want) :)

I wonder what I'm missing as far as region free/EU 360 shmups go.

Not exactly a "pure" shmup, but there's also Senko no Ronde Rev.X (Wartech). It's a mix between a bullet-hell shooter, a vs fighter, and Virtual On. I love the series, but it's not for everyone.

that Neo Witch something 2D SS game on XBLA (I don't mean Strike Witches)

That's Trouble Witches Neo. One of my favorite shooters. Highly recommended.

I'm lucky to have galloping ghost 20 minutes away. If you guys are ever in Chicago I'd recommend going. $15 flat entry fee and they have over 400 games including
Donpachi
Dodonpachi Daioujou
Ikaruga
In the hunt
Gradius II
G-Darius
Mars Matrix
Radiant Silvergun
Raiden
R-Type
Truxton

and they are actively looking to add
Battle Garegga
Dodonpachi
Gradius
Truxton 2

The only issue (for me) is that they don't use candy cabs

Eschatos may look simplistic, but its really fast moving and has some pretty cool constant environment traversal. no load or tally screen pauses.

Havent really sat down with Ginga Force much, but I like all the dynamic camera action there too.

Not nearly my favorite MD shooter but Steel Empire was still pretty fun.

Yeah,

Never played it myself. I'm guilty of only thinking Genesis/MD as Tecnosoft system only. But good news, nonetheless. Always nice to have shooters on handhelds since they are very under-presented there.

To add to the Steel Empire news. It will be released in December on the eShop by STAR ☆ FISH (http://www.s-f.co.jp).

Star Fish? They published The Monkey King, Saint, and Heavenly Guardian for Wii, and Devilish for DS, all of which were classic-game remakes. The Monkey King was pretty bad, and Devilish and Saint just okay, but Heavenly Guardian's pretty good... I hope this one is more like that than those others.

Please tell me that it changed and that you played the amazing Gynoug!

Yeah, I been buying some of the titles on VC over the years. Stuff that is kinda boring (like Musha Aleste) and others which are really awesome (like Gynoug!). I'm gonna pick up a MD next year and track down a few shooter carts. But, yeah, still mainly getting it for the Tecnosoft product and Herzog, and Strider.

Gynoug is a personal fave of mine that stuck in my mind ever since I played it as a kid.

It must have been the dick boss that did it lol

Never beat it though, as I'm not a fan of the boss rush final stage.

Wait, Gynoug is on the VC?

I have everything TechnoSoft on MD as well as a few other shooters (Gynoug, Aleste, Arrow Flash, Atomic Robokid, burning Force, Tatsujin, Zero Wing, XDR and a few others

Amazing system (even if the PCE and the Saturn remain kings)

Gynoug is only on the Japanese side of VC. I picked it up a few weeks back and was blown away. Truly amazing.

I guess I'm going to be using the racketboy list since I've loved using their Saturn list. Still, not knowing much about the MD/Genesis shooters it seems to get a bit sketchy below Truxton (the list goes from most recommended to least).

lol why is Curse on a recommendation list?

That game straight-up sucks.

Gynoug has some really interesting bosses but the first few stages are so dull that I can't really bring myself to play it very often.

It has been out since the 18th

Only in PAL-land. There's no NA date just yet, only a promise from NOA that "you won't have to wait much longer".
