Microsoft: "It’s up to us to prove that [Xbox One is] worth $100 more [than PS4]"

I wish we still had NPD numbers, they'd be interesting this Nov/Dec. After 1-2 years both consoles will probably have reached price parity (in the US) probably with the removal of "unnecessary" devices.

For me the more interesting question will be if XB1 XBLG is a better PS4 PS+, it's $10 more expensive but Sony still needs to proof the advancements they have claimed on online infrastructure.

That and the voice commands will be awesome. I can't imagine I'm the only one that can't remember that ESPN is channel 4XX on my service. The ability to change channel and perhaps do things like setup recordings using voice is pretty major for me.



The guide on most cable boxes is ridiculously slow from my experience.

I don't think anyone is blaming the rep for saying what he said. We all realize that that is his job. We're laughing at the message they're trying to send and the way they're attempting to spin the situation.

Penello said the suite of games and services Microsoft is offering with the Xbox One is stronger than the competition.

"I think we do more. I think our games are better. I think as people start to experience Kinect and see what it can do using voice, I think that’s better," he added. "I think the ability to have an all-in-one system where you can plug in the TV, that’s better. I think we’ll have a better online service."

"I just believe that we’re going to have a better system."

Ultimately, consumers want to buy the "best thing," Penello said. The Xbox One's stance as the most premium console this holiday season won't hold it back, he argued.

"$100, when you’re talking $400 vs. $500 [shrugs shoulders]. I don’t believe it’s going to be the deal-killer," he said.

None of this sounds controversial. Replace Albert's name with a Sony or Nintendo representative and it still... pretty tame and diplomatic.

It is for me, especially when in reality it's $400 vs $560 being all the "tremendous value" features of the Xbone require Live.
 
The only way MS will convince gamers is by moneyhatting exclusives left and right.

Gamers will go where games are.
 
It's like they almost don't remember seven years ago that the $100 difference between the PS3 and 360 gave it a huge leg up on the competition.

Day One editions include a 12 month Xbox Live card.

but only for online play, so if you don't care about that then no it's not another $50 on top

his point was that Microsoft paywalls everything while if you want to watch Netflix on PS4 you're able to without having PS+

The PS3 comparison is a little unfair. Sony was saying the PS3 was 'worth $600,' which it was. The Xbox One sounds like a good deal at $500, but it doesnt match the PS4 in value.
 
Poor guy couldn't have answered a journalist's question about the price differently, so be nice to him. What else should he have said?

  • Yeah, we screwed the box up. Wouldn't buy it either. Oops.
  • We will drop the damn camera and cut the price in 6 months, so just wait and don't buy the box yet.
  • It's worse value, but eneugh dudes will buy it anyway.

Its not spin, unless you consider all marketing 'spin'. They are trying to sell a product and have to make a case for why people should buy it.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. There's no objective way to determine it. MS's gamble, as with any pricing structure, is to deliver a product at a price point they think that *enough* people will find it 'ok' value or better. Obviously lots of people here have made it known very early on that they don't find the XboxOne to be good value for them. What the public at large thinks might be different, its hard to say. There's a fair amount to take into consideration when evaluating a versatile piece of tech like a next-gen console, so people's perceptions will vary quite a bit.

Then he said words like Kinect and Voice.


and my view is that xbone is much larger and has less powerful cpu/gpu combo than PS4 which does not help here and Sony first party has huge talent and reputation.

To subsidise the technology used: yes, it was "worth" $600.

To provide an experience significantly higher, dollar-for-dollar to its rivals? Nowhere close to being worth it.

Note: I bought a $600 PS3 in April 2007. Back in the good old days of £1 = $2.
 
I remember Sony talking like this before PS3 came out. A lot of people switched to Xbox. It's funny how MS is making the same mistake, but I guess that's how ego works.
