Microsoft: "It’s up to us to prove that [Xbox One is] worth $100 more [than PS4]"

How about you prove that Kinect2 is warranted in the box despite having no first-party Kinect games launching and only launching with voice support in 5 of the newly reduced from 21 to 13 countries?

How about you prove that you're ready to launch a console in November 2013?

How about you prove that you know wtf you're doing after so many 180's and reannouncements that even people TRYING to keep track aren't 100% sure where you're standing?

If you want to spend no greater than $500 for an all in one media system with camera, can you get that from an XBO? Answer no. Because media apps are locked behind a $5 per month paywall. But you can get that from PS4.

He's right that it's up to them to prove it (they haven't, and that's demonstrated by the negativity toward Xbox one), but this line is unfortunate:

"$100, when you’re talking $400 vs. $500 [shrugs shoulders]. I don’t believe it’s going to be the deal-killer," he said.

Of course it is. A $100 is a lot of money, Albert. People are struggling and people have to make hard choices. This is not nearly as bad as Sony's arrogance regarding the PS3, but it is an unhealthy echo of that moment, so tread carefully on the lack of understanding.

Edit: It could be the "shrugs shoulders" part, just makes it seem bad lol

Yes MS it is too bad you are failing miserably at doing so.
Gotta admit some games do look great but it's still $100 more

Albert has consistently said Kinect 2.0 true value is only apparent when you have used it. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, I'm not going to judge something I haven't used. That shrugs shoulders bit was unnecessary.

MS is taking PR tips from Reggie, I see.

Here's what MS needs to do:

1) Shut the fuck up
2) Remove Kinect
3) Lower price by 100 bucks

There, Microsoft. I just made your console infinitely more attractive.

That will be 20 million for my PR advice.

Yep, that was pretty tone-deaf, especially coming from a particularly well-compensated MS exec.

And yeah, it sounds like hubris -- it's (hypothetically!) like Nvidia continuing to charge a premium for their wares because 'we're Nvidia, of course people will prefer our product' even though AMD has come out with a superior card that costs less.

I wonder for how many people in here is price the only factor? Like if the Xbox One was $400 including Kinect you'd buy it over the PS4.

Yeah, pretty much how I feel about it. It's not like he's polishing a monocle before lighting a cigar with a hundred dollar bill. But that shrug.... that shrug!

They need to lower the price by at least $150 or $200. The XBone is still weaker hardware so the price should reflect that.

Simple: offer a Kinectless sku at $100 less.

Would pre-order today. Otherwise my 360 will have to suffice until the price drops.

It's a matter of principle. I won't use Kinect, so I don't want to pay for it.

Haha, yeah it's not his "Let them eat cake" moment, but it's just a bit of bad form that comes across worse because they say he shrugged his shoulders. It's no big deal, Albert should just be mindful that $100 is of course a major consideration. That $100 could be used to buy games for the PS4, because remember even with the $500, you'll have to be buying a game, unless you're getting the late launch in Europe or you like Fifa and you pre-ordered in Europe.

If Microsoft dropped it to $400 and still Kinect you wouldn't be paying for it, Microsoft would be

I'm buying a system that comes with a camera I would find obsolete so why would I buy it? I would wait for a bundle without Kinect, I would still be supporting something I don't like.

I'm always amazed also that they don't consider the $60 per year requirement to use their "all in one entertainment device" to be anything worth discussing in the face of a free to use media box competitor.

Over 5 years, the XBO costs a total of $400 more than PS4 as an "all in one entertainment system".

The price difference on day 1 is actually $160.

ultimately the difference between $400 and $500 isn't that huge. But if you're stretching to get together that $400, then $500 can literally be out of reach

Because it would be effectively free at $400? It'd be like cancelling your preorder because they decided to pack in FIFA2014 at no extra cost and you didn't want the game.

And here I thought he wasn't PR...

$100 is not a negligible amount, and if MS thinks they've proven it's worth that extra money, I think they're crazy. (People might prefer it for any number of reasons, but the value proposition simply isn't there.) They can keep saying that Kinect is great, but I haven't seen a damn thing to show me that's true yet. If its so amazing, show it off. What exactly are they waiting for?

This used to be Don Mattrick. Still is.

The kinect is a huge part of the machine so we can keep going through this "drop kinect" stuff over and over but in the end it will be there and for good reason in my opinion.

Can we stop saying this machine is $100 more expensive? It's not. It's $160 more expensive. Everything Microsoft is showing you that they feel makes their system valuable costs $160 more than a PS4.

In this thread people get angry because Microsoft says something that is clearly evident.

Their console costs 100 dollars more. They have to convince people that it is worth the premium. They think at the end of the day people will see the value.

Controversial.

I'm getting sick of their insulting PR, to be quite honest. The more they talk, the less it makes me want to buy one.

Newsflash, Microsoft. I like having the choice to not buy add-ons, instead of having them shoehorned in on top of a weaker system that I have to pay more for on the whole because of extra features that I do not give a shit about. I don't want your fucking Kinect. The $100 more is not 'value' for many of us, it's simply added cost for weaker hardware on the gaming front, and an added device that we would ultimately just end up tossing in a drawer.

Meanwhile, I can get a more powerful system where all of the third party games are and an incredibly strong focus on first party for $100 less. That is value, not paying more for shit I don't want or need that you keep trying to tell me that I need anyway in order to justify being overpriced. Just stop it already.

If Microsoft dropped it to $400 and still Kinect you wouldn't be paying for it, Microsoft would be

That angle is irrelevant to an end-consumer who only sees a package including an asset of zero perceived value (Kinect). In the case of those who do not want or care about Kinect, the value proposition of a $400 Xbone is directly compared to a $400 PS4, which leaves you with a console with weaker hardware at the same price. At that point, the price has to come below $400 before that consumer sees a real advantage to the value proposition compared to the competition. (Barring other elements such as exclusive games, etc)

There is already a Kinect in the market and it has failed to deliver any game changing mechanics. Yeah it sold well but it was nothing more than a firework.

I don't understand why people are mocking him. He's right, and they do have a better launch lineup for me.

Fixed. Launch lineups on both consoles are subjective. A lot of people are super stoked for the PS4's launch lineup, I can't wait to get my hands on Resogun for example. When Stardust hit for the PS3, I put over 50 hours into that game before spending much time on anything else.

The first page of replies was basically finding humor in just that - "water is wet" and so on.

PS3 actually had some worthy features at launch for its higher price that the 360 didn't offer.

-Blu-ray movie playback capability
-60GB HDD vs. 20GB
-Built-in WiFi vs. a $100 add-on (might be off on the price)

Aside from the Kinect which most gamers who are going to be early adopters don't really want, the XBone literally offers nothing to justify its higher price, not to mention it is slightly inferior in the horsepower department.
