What is the best Spider-Man arc to read for someone who has never read any Spidey comics? Spider Island? Or is there a better run to start at?

What about something like Kraven's Last Hunt? I like spider-man but there are surprisingly few spidey stories i've actually liked. Astonishing spidey and Wolverine, Spider-Man: Reign, and Kraven's Last Hunt are about it.

Daaamn, hell of tempted to go stinkhouse on the Invincible collections. The art is so damn good.

But that dialogue...

But that never-half-bad Kirkman plotting...

daaaamn
So worth it. 90+ issues of awesome. The only time I've ever been disappointed in the series was 98-101.

God fucking damn it. I'm close to done with the New 52, at this point. :/

That doesn't make any sense. The consumer is the one pissing you off so you get mad at the comcis?

I haven't read Green Team or the Movement so I can't say anything about them. I've been sticking with Vibe though and I will continue to say they are writing it too fucking slow. There's still been no pay off, no OH MAN you have to check out Vibe cause of X. It's a decent character, but they're not doing anything with it, or with him to make the average person pick up a non famous character. I'm not surprised the average consumer isn't buying into these books.

How is Hellboy? I love the movies.

I've only read a little of Hellboy so far despite owning the library editions...but really really good so far, and the library edition price/quality ratio is fantastic. I don't think it will be a series that disappoints you.

Same. I've been buying the hardcovers for both Invincible and Walking Dead as they come out. Image really puts out nice books in that format. Kinda hoping they start doing this with Saga at some point.

it's gotta happen...they're already doing it for Revival. I'd bank on Saga and Fatale getting collections, but Saga has to be a definite.

Would I be better going with trades or library edition?

Day 1 for Saga hardcovers. Please make it happen Image.

You might want to check out the first paperback to see if you like it before going for the library editions. Each library edition collects two trades though so I suppose if you can find the first library edition at a similar price to the first two trades then go for it.

How is Hellboy? I love the movies.

They're absolutely amazing, transcendent examples of what the comic book medium can be. They have nuanced, adult storytelling, whimsical moments of levity, art handed down by God himself and the absolute best coloring to ever grace a floppy.

Go read now.

They've done hardcovers for Chew as well. "Omnivore" editions which each collect two arcs/trades, and there's a "Smorgasbord" book coming soon which collects the first four trades. I believe that's oversized and comes with slipcase too. Image doesn't seem shy about doing hardcovers for the books that sell well, although it's ultimately up to the creators, right?

Would I be better going with trades or library edition?

Even my library has a few Hellboy trades sitting around, and they suck for comics, so you could check your local library to see if you can get a taste without putting cash down first.

The library editions are great, however. InStockTrades has them for extremely good prices.

God damn it birdie now I have to get both!

He's only half correct. BPRD is essential. I think they're pretty much the same damn book, just with a different name. If you didn't read the cover, you'd never know.

In short. they're amazing and must reads.

I just dropped $90.88 on the full run of 1-100.

Hold me, GAF.

What if you hate it after 5 issues? You'll have 95 more to read!

Also, it's really good. Kirkman succeeded in not stalling out of ideas like he did with Walking Dead. WD may get the popularity, but Invincible kept its quality.

For sure. It's the Kirkman book that should have always got more attention than it does.

No, I mean that it's getting really irritating when the majority of DC books that interest me either are already cancelled, are knee-deep in the cancellation range, or their creators nearly get screwed over, somehow. This is becoming a pattern, now. :P

I have such a huge backlog. Didn't buy any comics at all during the month of August. I plan on blowing a good $300+ on comics in the coming weeks. D:

Also, Chris Weston who did the art of "Savior", the third story in Adventures of Superman #4, is someone I need to keep an eye on. That art is just gorgeous. Got a chance to draw lots of different people in it, but his Lois and Ma Kent were just sublime.

JMS and John Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spiderman run. It's some 20-30 issues IIRC, but is terrific.

A friend of mine drew this. Damn!

Aside from the hair, it's fantastic.

How is Hellboy? I love the movies.

Hellboy is magnificent, and the books are very different to the movies. At first they may be a little hard to follow but if you re-read the series it all comes together.
You'll also want to read it's 'sister series' BPRD too, which starts after Hellboy: Conqueror Worm

How essential is BPRD to read alongside Hellboy?
Not essential, just better. ;D
Gotta agree lol, BPRD is great but it will give you the feels
Roger ;.;

BPRD is not only essential. Its a crap ton better than the Hellboy series!

And I love the Hellboy series!

Also for shame at the OP for not highlighting Lazarus.
One of the best new series from Image.

Okay Comic-Gaf. My girlfriend of 4 years decided to drop me 2 weeks before her birthday and 3 weeks before our 4. anniversary. Our ideas of life (I following a academic career vs her dream of building a hostel on the camino in spain) not matching and wanting to break up on good terms because the 4 years with me was the best relationship she ever had.
Yet I'm guy nr 3 that got axed after 4 years. Should have seen it coming. And now she want's one month to figure things out.

Anywho. I feel like got my heart ripped out, my soul shattered into thousands of pieces and I'm at a dark place. It's the darkest place I have been since 2006. A place where I hate the world (good that I have got a few student papers to grad...)..

What are some good comics to read in a mood when one feels like the whole world got nuked around oneself?

I love superhero stuff, I'm into the Top Cow stuff, did not care for Walking Dead or licenced stuff like Star Wars etc...

Should be decently epic. Please no Lovestory and not simple slugfests. Idealy available on Comixology.

He drew Morrison's The Filth, and phenomenally well.

There's a smidge of love story in it but this massive Invincible sale on Comixology sounds like exactly what you're looking for. I'd give the first trade a shot to see if you like it. (God help me, I'm really loving it.)

Other than that:
Hickman's Fantastic Four/FF run
Morrison's New X-Men run

It's tough because superhero comics being the soap operas that they are feature at least a bit of romance stuff.

Not sure how available Astro City is but, yeah, that too.

And Moore's Top Ten.

If you just want all out fun, though, get Rick Remender's Punisher: Frankencastle storyline.

Hmm dunno if it's what you'd be looking for but...
Hellboy and BPRD
Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck
Atomic Robo
Daredevil
Rex Mundi
IDW's Dungeons and Dragons
IDW's Transformers: More than meets the eye (or just any TF book written by James Roberts)

Read Irredeemable and pretend that you are the Plutonian.

My roommate suggests "Books of Doom" by Ed Brubaker.

Dude - Thx. Just got Invincible Digital Omnibus 1. Forgot that they had the sale this weekend.

If you just want all out fun, though, get Rick Remender's Punisher: Frankencastle storyline.

The "big ones" I already owned, but this one is a good idea too. Like the first issues, but dropped it as I went from buying single issues in print to digital.

Good als Waid and Brubaker. Trying to pace myself. But going for Irredeemable.

Yeah, Waid DD and TF:MtME are part of my monthly reading. Maybe taking a look into Rex Mundi,
(great Garou nick btw.)

Thank you guys, I need to power through some comics to get through the day. No idea how I shall do work in the next few days.

Ah, man, that's shitty. I think the best recommendation I can give you is All Star Superman. That comic exudes hope and hope's always something you could use more of when dealing with a broken heart.

Rex Mundi is an alternate History story with a really good mystery IMO, I don't know if you'll like it, but the mystery aspect of it kept me hooked. It had some really good art too.

I'm just gonna echo a few of the suggestions already posted - Atomic Robo and most definitely All Star Superman.

Oops, repost from August thread.

Finished Thanos Rising. Enjoyed it overall, though it had its flaws, when Thanos came through, it shined.

Like this scene here:

I'm not very hyped for Infinity from what I've seen. Thanos hardly seems the main antagonist at all.

Justice_dp I would suggest the graphic novel Louis Riel by Chester Brown. It might be a good time to be taken to a different place and time with a well done historic biography. Learn of the struggles of a complicated man trying to be true to himself and fight for political rights of his people.

I hated Chester Brown's Paying For It, but I really enjoyed Louis Riel, fwiw.

And sorry about your situation. Sounds painful. Comics will get you through. I recommend listening to music by Elliott Smith, as well.

Sorry to hear that, bro. If you need something light hearted that sets you in a good mood, I want to highlight Atomic Robo again, as some of the others already did. Maybe it can cheer you up a bit:

I have to admit, with my DC pull list smaller than ever (Batman, Superman Unchained and Batman/Superman), this Forever Evil month will actually mark an entire month of books I won't pick up from DC. Anyone else completely skipping DC this month?

If you pull DC, you're probably getting books. If you don't, or pull very few, I don't think that will change. But if pre-sells, interest in the books, scalpers on eBay and 2D reorders of the titles are any indication, this is going to be a bit of a blowout month for DC.

I don't see how you can see that wall of FE covers and say "nope, not for me"

It looks wondrous!

I have got to get on Stumptown. I am ashamed if myself for not doing it sooner. I even bought the omni on Comixology but I'm holding off to read it on paper. I've heard it's the superior way to experience the piece.

Rucka's female characters are my everything.
