it's usually up to the pub naturally. I've seen surprisingly a lot of bad healers... even when i have agro on every mob... just spam heal on me.

The worst are the healers that just for some reason want to attack mobs... idk.

I try not to spam heal on the tank unless they are taking continuous damage that needs to be healed. The problem here is that freecast for cure II doesn't come up often enough, so we try and make due with cure unless you take a big hit. Usually paired with Divine Seal is good to make it through any fight along with Regen (which helps a ton).

Attacking mobs is ok as long as things are under control and the tank isn't really getting hit or taking much damage. I've been in parties where I've been wary of attacking mobs and others where I've got nothing else to do because the tank handles hate and their damage very well. I usually end up sleeping others and putting DoTs on the primary target if I can. Again, sleep is useless with a MRD/WAR tank, so plan accordingly.

Edit: Holy hell, first post on another page. I'm not sure how I'm doing it...

Dutyfinding Amdapor as a tank is a fucking mixed bag. Trying to throw some questions out and the kind of responses you get are all over the map...

Speedrun okay?
  1. Yes, thanks!
  2. I've never run it
  3. JUST GO

Explaining it to the guy who isn't sure
  1. {Ready}
  2. {Thank you}
  3. WHAT THE FUCK GO, ASSHOLE

There's always one man... god forbid we wipe, then it's all over for some people.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever used a limit break, and I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone use one. As a tank my eyes stay glued to my hotbar and the enemy agro meters most of the time so I never even really notice the limit break gauge. I also got rushed through reading the tutorial prompts since everyone started running through the dungeon the first time it popped up for me so I sort of forgot about them to be honest.

I use it quite often as a tank. Totorak endboss, the Cthulu lookin' dude. I almost always use the Level 2 Defense LB on his third add spawn just to make it easier on my healer. I've never seen anyone but me use them though. =/

To a complete MMO newbie who falls prey to FF nostalgia harder than most (fucking spent about 200 hours across the entire Dissidia series for insane reasons), how hard or easy would it be getting adjusted to ARR assuming I was interested in the PS3 version?

This is my first MMO (that i got past lvl 20), and i'm a huge FF nut. I've never played FFXI, so i bought this purely from nostalgia and I can honestly say this is the most fun I've had with a Final Fantasy game since X. It's very easy, but i'm sure that'll change soon (im lvl 31 MAR, 10 GLA). So I say, if you love FF. GET IT! you alrready know what all the spells and items do, enemy weakneses etc etc.

I've never used it as a tank, but our healers and DPS have used theirs. The healer LB is like a Megalixir. Melee DPS do a huge single-target nuke - at level 30 it hit for around 2300. Ranged DPS do a multi-target nuke which will do a relatively smaller amount of damage to all of the adds.

is there anyway to tell whos a ps3 gamer?

how is tanking/healing with a gamepad?

Not really giving much of a ff vibe outside of crystals and chocobos. weirdly enough something about the world's look reminds me of the cutscenes of psx ff games. something to do with the lighting.

1. I don't think so.
2. I've read that healing different targets can be a bit tough on a gamepad.
3. ARR reminds me of IV, VI, VII, IX and XII in a lot of ways. Characters you meet, the music, summons, etc.

If you follow the main storyline quest along with your job quests, the game is actually pretty nifty at teaching you your role and how things work without overwhelming you. The UI might be a little busy for newcomers, but the tutorial itself is not bad at all for someone just starting out.

If you played FFXII, you'll probably be pretty comfortable with XIV's combat and everything else is more or less MMO 101 which ARR handles very well.

Again, sleep is useless with a MRD/WAR tank, so plan accordingly.

Speaking for myself, a WAR tank, if you just sleep after that first overpower, I won't break it. I'll likely be using flash from then on so it doesn't break sleep, and more importantly doesn't reset my combo.

Reading about them I'd almost be paranoid to use it since it's a party gauge. I'd get yelled at in chat about, "I should be using the LB!!!! WTF are you doing???!!!!"

Man, reading the responses in this thread ... I will just avoid the duty finder altogether. Thank god some awesome people from 1.0 are still on my server which whom I will do the majority of the stuff.
You make it sound so unfun to do dungeons because you do it with random people. And that close to launch as well ... I can practically feel the burn-out some of you might be getting soon.

Good to know. Might need to start asking if the MRD/WAR wants me to sleep enemies or just blast through them. I know some can get a bit overpower happy early in fights, though it's too much of a tp drain and you're stuck waiting for it to come back.

Not being able to play for a week kind of killed my interest. How much faith does anyone have in the fixes/maintenance that are planned for tonight?

I have a feeling it's going to be really bad with emergency maintenance and more problems for the rest of the week. I don't have faith in them to fix it the first, 2nd, or 3rd time. I just hope it's smooth and with no queues...or at least a working real queue system by this weekend.

Yesterday I did the Haukke Manor with my brother as a Healer and me as a Lancer DPS.

The whole dungeon went great but when we got to the Final Boss, my god.

The Tank was good and all, nothing to say on his work. The other DPS tough...

I checked my FFXIVapp that was running for the entire dungeon. For some reason, he was at so low damage done for the entire dungeon, it was ridiculous. He didn't even go over 20k damage Done, while I was near the 90k, I mean, what a difference!

And for the boss, well. Guess he never understood the mechanic of the Lamps, the Adds how to do a Limit break. It's a wonder he got to that point...

After 10 wipe we finally beat it, but it was me and the healer that were closing the lamps...

Best thing though, is that I took time to explain to him the mechanics he wasn't doing really good and for a rare thing, he accepted my explication and was sorry for his lack of basic knowledge. I couldn't do shit for his DPS tough, I don't know how Arcanist work.
XIV App has issues calculating DoT damage so thats possibly why. Thats why I just switched over to http://xivparser.com/summary/ I find it more accurate, but thats just my opinion

Ditto, well, I'm not high level enough to really be teamed with DPS using sleep, but I worked out that strategy a few days ago in anticipation of the issue. I might also add that, if you've leveled GLD enough, provoke should work fairly well in those situations.

I dunno, I've only had one really bad party experience from the Duty Finder and that was just because the archer was pulling everything in sight before I could do it. The others have been fairly fun, cordial, and all around good experiences.

Honestly, I'm a bit more hesitant to party with GAF FC people because I really don't want them to see me sucking as a tank!! Haha!!

I did that in p3 thinking it was a personal LB during Sastasha, not a party one. No one said anything and I didn't know till later in the beta it was actually for the entire party. Felt bad about using it as a tank when I didn't really need to.

So how viable is thunder? I heard it got nerfed and I never found it to be too strong while leveling (currently I am 31 BLM), but while I was dungeoning earlier someone recommended I start using it in my rotation all the time. Is it worth it due to thundercloud? I'm still unsure.

Aw man, just heard about the maintenance tonight. I know it's completely necessary, but I won't be able to play at all today. I don't get out of work until 4 PM (PST) and by the time I'd be able to play it would be 5.

Blargh!

Personally, I've had no issues with it. I'm a tank though, which gives you a much larger part of the group's success on your shoulders. Sometimes I have dealt with over zealous dps pulling for me, once I explain that I don't have a traditional taunt and they'll likely be tanking anything they pull, they knock it off.

Well, I had just resigned myself to giving up logging in today and started watching some Attack on Titan when I managed to get in. Not stopping until maintenance now.

You can get a "real" taunt, just have to level Gladiator to 22 and you run into mana issues if you have to spam Flash/Provoke a lot.

I dunno. I used the duty finder three times. Once for Ifrit, which was an amazing group, and twice for Guildleves which went well.

You mean provoke? If they haven't changed how it worked, then all it really does is put you on the top of the stack. You really need to follow that up with another enmity move to hold the mob, usually either an attack or flash.

Had a horrible experience with duty finder. Died about 15 times to Titan (may have been a few less but it was up there). After that got help from RedDot and cleared easily @.@

I think alot of people forget to set limit breaks to the crossbar, but when used they are really helpful. Im guessing tank lb would be useful for boss ultimate attack, dd for burning through that last bit of hp, and mage dd for aoe add kills? Healer break would probably be a last ditch recovery effort.

Far be it from me to criticize the mindset, but you don't really NEED to collect the entire set. Collecting GC gear is easier and about as good, even if the gear is frequently not as aesthetically pleasing.

But it looks so good!!

There have been some blunders, but most of my DF parties have been perfectly funtional and even sometimes quite excellent.

And most people have been nice too.

Thing is, MRD/WAR's have a single enemy Agro Attack, so "Flash," should only be needed to help keep emnity during long encounters with large groups of mobs, and even that shouldn't be neccesary if somebody is around putting enemies to sleep. In that situation, you should only need to use provoke once, and only then in cases where that single enemy slipped passed you despite using agro attacks.

I know that the tank lb is pretty much needed for the Garuda battle and is the only way we were able to beat progress at one point.

I feel like I'm advancing so much slower than other, but I refuse to grind out Fate's. Thusly, I have been doing Story/Side-Quests and listening to everything. I'm really soaking in the lore. I even talk to named NPC's just sitting idle around towns.

I finally joined a Grand Company [The Immortal Flames] and will work on getting my Chocobo next time I log on [which will probably be tomorrow], given maintenance. Here's hoping the servers are more stable by then.

lol now that is my number 1 fear. Then again, the meter is easy to raise and you can kill things without. Just makes stuff a little easier.

When I leveled GLA, that was the only time I ever used provoke. The rest of the time was a mix of flash for gathering mobs and enmity combos to hold hate. Sadly, I have seen tanks start off with provoke...

Really? Crud, I've been letting DPS and Healers handle Limit Breaks till now. Looks like I'm going to have to get used to using it.

Heh, it's kinda a Skill meant for very specific situations. Thing is, a lot of players are of the attitude that, every skill must be meant to be used frequently. This seems to be especially true for people that're new to the MMO genre, like myself.

Heh, well that may be true, but you'd only be keeping the armor for a few levels anyway.

I keeped the Cavalry set until 45, because:

1) I'm a cheap bastard

2) Didn't have luck in other dunegons

3) Still has better defense that mithrill armor around lvl 40 for example. From 40 onwards you can get better armor, until then it holds well enough.

And since I plan to level up MRD at some point so it was worth.

I haven't even been able to play this game since last Wednesday.

I have work off tomorrow, I might buy some energy drinks and try to stay up until like 4am or whatever to get some game time in. Fucking ridiculous.

I think part of the issue is the number of skills, but also it's on the player to read and check out what the skill does in conjunction with other skills that you have and how mobs react to it. Some are more self explanatory than others, but one of the reasons why the early dungeons are so easy (imo) is so you have the option to mess up a bit and still not wipe. By the time you hit your job, you should have a pretty firm grasp on what to do and when, at least, I'd hope most players were at the stage. I've been proven wrong though.

Heh. I'm the opposite. I'm spamming the X button (PS3 ver) constantly to get by a lot of the dialogue. I read some of it though. There's just soooo much of it in this game.

Yeah, I don't think it helps that the limit break tutorials pop-up right when your entering Sastasha and many people are just blowing through them and not reading at all.

This FATE was pretty fun. Got an achievement for it.
Ugh, I can't wait to experience the larger Fate's. They look like a lot of fun.

The only ones I've come across so far, in the earlier areas, are simple ones where you kill a certain number of smaller enemies [or trade in specific materials]. I look forward to the more...moderately-sized enemies that await me further in my travels!

You must not! You must absorb is all, like a sponge! I even waiting for the voiced dialogue in cut-scenes to finish before I advance the text further [despite already reading it at the bottom of the screen].

...I will not change, love/hate me for who I am!

5 days now and still can't get a Dhorme Chimera party invite. Sucks that groups won't take certain classes because they will only take two healers and two bards...
