Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | September 2013 | Token Indie Thread

Ironic in that this week Vita owners are complaining that Rayman isn't exactly the same as the console version.

Not having a go or anything but it works both ways. Obviously the Rayman issue is lack of time or something but still.

I think the main issue here is the fact that:

A) They cut like 25 levels from the console version when they said the game will have "every original stage" plus 5 touch screen levels exclusive to Vita and WiiU.
B) They didn't say anything about it. If GAF hadn't noticed it lots of people would have bought the game as if nothing had happened. It's not fair.

I wonder if it is smart enough to look for the save on the PS+ cloud. Because I deleted the game to make space and I don't fancy reinstalling the 3GB+ game just to get the bonus. I bet you do have to though.

I had to download Totori and my Plus save to get Meruru to give me the extras

Those were just general tips. If you have any specific questions I'm sure I could help you with those as well
Cool, thank you. I've been discovering things here and there, I think I just need to keep going at it to increase my Spelunky experience points. I was going to ask about the Ankh, but, as long as I know it's in the Black Market, I'll leave it up to chance for now. I'll likely be pm'ing you in the future though, should I have any other questions.

For a moment, I thought the Mereru Bundle meant that it included Totori Plus too.
At $40, that would be fantstic value.

Yes I'm dreaming

Try to play the speed-runs. You have to play the games much more straightforwardly that way and they really give a whole new dimension to the levels.

Speed runs are where the challenge is at... but...

I've finished the first... what would you call it, world? Area? and at the end, I was getting through the levels quite quickly rather than looking for secret passages, etc. I was probably having more fun being a bit more methodical, though.

It's really no different than a Mario game like Super Mario World or NSMB2 -- you open a level, you get the stuff on the way, you find some of the super "hidden" things, and try to get a high score.

I'll have to try them.

When going back and trying to do everything in the levels... what are the criteria. It looks like there's 3 marks (smiley face things?) in most levels for opening the cages, one for time, and another 2-3 for collecting other animal things along the way? Sorry, I don't yet know what everything is called.

Can I mix and match in each run... for example, do it really quick to just get the time one... does it stack or do you need to do it all at once?

You wouldn't go for level completion and stuff on a time runs. I found it best to save the timed runs til the very end of the game and just work a second lap around the entire game...

With that said, to answer your questions, there are 5 medals you can get in each world.
3 are hidden somewhere in the stage.
The last two are for getting high enough score (collecting lums)... one is if you get over 150, the other is if you get over 300. The 300 can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but nothing too difficult.

Damn, I think it's time to get Ys Seven, Corpse Party games and maybe BRS.

Aaaaannd SCEE has shown up SCEA once again.
That sale is much more extensive than the Japanese Dev sale we got, plus it includes PSP and PSOne games, which, y'know, SCEE actually enabled a large majority of for play on Vita. :lol

Thanks for the info. Maybe I missed a tutorial or something, but I found a lot of this stuff isn't really explained that well... you're my tutorial!

No tutorial other than what they teach you in the first world or so.

Always one-go. There are items specifically in the first two worlds that are crucial to a good run, I think
eye in caves, ankh from black market in jungle

Sacrifice pits were a part of this particular run as well as the jet pack. I have made it to hell with a cape, but obviously the jetpack reigns supreme in this game. Getting the chalice and taking advantage of every blood droplet gets insane. I also had the 8 heart bonus on this run from getting Kali up to 32 points.

When I get to the Temple and if I have bombs, when in doubt, just blow it up. I followed this rationale in hell to the letter and made it extremely easy this time.

I have some nice tricks for taking out the shopkeepers in the black market. As I mentioned previously, I also learned how to take out a shop keeper with a whip and losing only 1 heart if he isn't angry previously.

Unless I'm going for score, I'll just buy from the shopkeeper unless he has a store full of bombs or the jetpack I can't afford. If he has a store like I mentioned, he's dead.

Sounds like I need more tips from you... hell, sometimes I piss off a shopkeeper unintentionally with a bomb or the golden idol trap... and I don't know how to deal with them. Any advice on dealing with angry shopkeepers?

Also, what should I be using to avoid/deal with Anubis in the Temple?

I didn't realise Ubi had lied over that fact.
That's very dishonest of them.

It's still ironic though.

How is the frame rate on KZM? I haven't seen anything mentioned on that.

Yeah, it's a douche move on Ubi's part, for sure.
Framerate in Killzone seems to be fantastically locked at 30fps -- I haven't seen any mention of dips and saw none in my experience with the betas.

Preach it!

I'm confused about Rayman's digital release in UK.

PSN says it's available tomorrow, but the game wasn't listed at all in the latest PSN Update post on the blog :S

I'm really hoping it's available early morning tomorrow as I've gotta leave early to catch a long train. Rayman would be perfect to pass the time.

It's all a bit weird: Amazon has it listed to release on Friday, but release date delivery is only saying arrival Saturday or Sunday.

Why do we call ourselves muffins...?

It's something I started long ago and it stuck. It's a rejection (and cuter alternative in sound) to the Vita bro terminology (was prevalent then)...

I want Meruru Vita impressions! ^_^

Native resolution? Aliasing? How does the game hold up visually? Is the game fun for a newcomer? iGN gave the PS3 version a 6...I'm interested (blame chilly academic), but no one has mentioned anything about the Vita porting.

:(

I'll give you some general tips. Most of your approach to an already angry shopkeep depends on your positioning in relation to his. You have to remember that your position in relation to his, if he's already aware of your presence, loops. If you change your position, his will change as well.

If you above him (like in the caves) and he's aware, your best best is bombs, or straight up avoidance (if you don't have a shotgun)

If you do have a shotgun, I generally will lower a rope (crouch against an edge of a ledge and press triangle which sends it downward). watching his patterns as you slowly descend, it's all about putting a shot in a line of where he passed you (out of danger) and where you can land a hit on him.

If the shop keep is by a skinny exit (mines for example) and is ping ponging so fast you're not sure how he got in there, you have 2 options. My favorite is to just fall straight down the middle which will always allow you to land on his head and go immediately in the exit.

the second option requires to you bomb the side that allows a straight path for a shotgun shot. you need to time the shot so it enters the newly created area you bombed away as the area is blown apart. this ensures he won't get away while you're shooting him

Also, what should I be using to avoid/deal with Anubis in the Temple?

there should are really 2/3 different scenarios you should encounter anubis. one is with sticky bombs, the other is without (takes more skill) and the shotgun.

2 bombs will kill anubis. if you are playing from the shortcut (no items, just 4/4/4) you're only real way of killing him is by dropping a bomb, picking it up, and timing a throw. I've done it a dozen times but getting him in a position where you have a clear shot with a bomb can be difficult.

If you have sticky bombs its a lot easier. It's all about getting to a "safe zone" where his scepter hits wont hit you and you can throw bombs where they'd stick. If you find yourself with a clear shot, take 2. You can stick multiple bombs to him simultaneously and they won't cancel each other out.

Ideally you'd have the baseball mit and can throw a line drive, or two, directly at him and make quick work of him.

killing him with a shot gun is very similar to the above method.

For people who want to become Vitabros, here is a good deal:
Vita + 8GB Mem. Card + Killzone Mercenary for 169€ Free Shipping.

http://www.redcoon.de/B486941-Sony-Computer-Entertainment-PS-Vita-Konsole-WiFi_Konsolen

Why don't you make a post about that deal? Is crazy. Maybe it can convince someone in the fence of buying a Vita.

But, why Germany has such a crazy deals? Here in Spain every Vita bundle costs 200 euros. Have you lower taxes there or something?

If you always want to have a shotgun from 1-2 and onward...

whip method

this will cost you one heart, but net you everything in the shop + the shotgun

there are always 4 items in the shop, unless he's sellling kisses or a slave. you need to position yourself in the middle of the 4th item, the one closest to him while he is positioned at the cash register. you need to whip him which will cause him to punch you but also to drop his shotgun. the shotgun will fall in between the first and second items. your job is to quickly pick up his gun, turn, and fire continuously until he drops gold.

the only complications from this method are missing the gun which means you die, or not firing fast enough, which means you die. after a little practice it's not hard to perfect

weapon method

this method is much easier and means you will use an existing item in the shop to kill the shop keep and get the same benefits from the above method without using a heart. the most common weapons you'll use are the shotgun, ice gun/ray, or the machete

im sure you've tried to use the shotgun he's selling against him but sometimes you'll randomly die. what you want to do is have the shopkeep think you're stealing the item. you will walk casually towards the entrance of the store after picking up the weapon, but while he's following you, turn and instantly fire. he'll be caught unawares and will die. if you've grabbed the ice gun, you'll freeze him and either need to jump on him or drop your gun and whip him.

with the machete you'll actually walk over to him and get as close as possible before going "friday the 13th" on his ass. make sure to chop quickly and often until his gold drops.

it is possible to do with with the web gun, but this method is a little more dangerous and harder than the above. basically, if he's webbed he won't move but can shoot forward in a straight line. keep this in mind

German console deals on 'dead' platforms are really crazy. Vita deals have been great since a year and Wii Us alre also pretty cheap often.
Don't know why they are so cheap. Our sales tax is 19%.

Man - the complaining in that Killzone review thread. Some people really pinned everything on Killzone being the dog's bollocks eh?

It's mostly because some reviewers reasons for not liking it is 'it's a handheld game'.

It's a strange area, I think, for reviews. When you take 'console franchises' - Uncharted, Wipeout, Killzone etc and port them down. Do you knock them for being weaker then their counterparts (assuming they are - I'm not sure Mercs is) Do you praise them higher because of what they've achieved on a portable system? (Again, I'm not sure that's the correct approach either) Or just review the game as if it exists in a vacuum? Independent of previous entries AND independent from the system it's on?

I'm not sure there's a perfect answer to it.

According to the TSA review, it's a game you should buy a Vita for.
I'd wager I'm going to agree with them when all is said and done.

It's good, certainly, and perhaps that statement point to the lack of an individual 'system selling' title more than anything else.

Mercenary is by far the best FPS ever on a portable format. But Vita can't take this credit, so flame on.

I'm not flaming - I'm sat here playing the game. But 'best FPS on portable' is a pretty low bar to clear.

Sorry, but the reviews are laughable. Their reasoning is beyond stupid. They nit only review the game on console standards, they hold it up against even higher ones.

Seeing the big games always getting away with stuff that KZ: Mercenary is criticized for isn't fair and some of the complaints aren't even true.

I would like to see Nintendo games reviewed by that standard. Watched several let's play videos this week of high profile 3DS games and was really disappointed.

It pisses me off because of the utter stupidity. Its literally stupid. You'd have to be a stupid person to go out your way to detract an above average polished game under review standards...

And these are the same people who wonder why videogames aren't taken seriously. Its a joke. A cruel one at that.

Yeah watched the latest Mario & Luigi game and man the handholding in that game turned me off from buying it, even though the Mario RPG elements looked cool.

Am I crazy or does Spelunky not have cross save? I can't find it in any menu options. I unlocked a shortcut on Vita that's not showing up on PS3.

it should, but it probably has something to do with not being able to connect at the beginning of your run or losing connection during your run.

that does suck. hopefully it wasn't the temple unlock

I was pretty disappointed by the Edge review.
"Its a good game, but actually we don't want a first person shooter on a handheld. Therefore: 6/10."
Thats basically what they said.

Mercenary feels like its big-screen cousin, it looks fantastic, it has a serviceable multiplayer, and its controls neither feel compromised by Vita’s lack of secondary triggers and clickable sticks nor undermined by crowbarred touch controls. It is, in other words, a competent handheld version of Killzone, and those who bought a Vita on that promise will be amply satisfied. Others will squint, line up their sights on a speck in the middle distance, squeeze the trigger and hope for the popup confirming their aim was true, and wonder if this is really what handheld gaming should be.

By that standard there is no way that Killzone could have gotten a high score.

It sounds like a valid complaint to me? And it could have got a higher score if it was a better game perhaps?

Anyway - Eurogamer is the best place to go for reviews at the moment (I think) - theirs seemed fair.

I just realized I got the Ice Caves shortcut while i was on a plane :(

i am more annoyed by the game constantly asking me to connect if i put it in sleep mode while taking a break.

it forces you to pause instead of just placing it in sleep mode.

giving up that shotgun is very rough though lol

I think I'm just going to consider it a Vita only game from now on. I play a lot better on the Vita anyway!

I always found very stupid that the average line in games is 8. When you actually see a film rated 80+ you usually run wildly to the cinema and boy a ticket. Most films rated between 60 and 79. In games 8 is good, 9 is pretty good, 9,5 is amazing and 10 is "lol, (company) is moneyhating (gamepress web)". There is a graphic with this explained, right?

I've come from reading the 3DJuegos review. It was like: it isn't the game the Vita needs -> HOLY SHIT IT IS FUCKING AMAZING! -> Innovation: 5. That guy seemed bipolar or something. It's the kind of game that will receive like +10 meta points if was in PS3.

However, the truly despicable thing was in the comments. It was a pool of trolling, fanboys, haters, "lol Vita haz no games" / "lol 3DS only has Marios" and that shit. Sometimes I truly want the videogames industry collapsing. It would be fun seeing that people playing "indie crap" in their 1,84 teraflopps gaming machine.

PS: Lol, it was longer than it should

People do like to get invested in these things.

I dont get butthurt over scores and shit but I kinda look at it like this...

These people get payed to play and critque video games...

I got to hop on a bus to commute to DC, work for 8 hours, and hop back on the bus... I barely find time to play games now... I'd RATHER play games than go work 5 days a week.

These guys get payed to....

Jus tlike any job, you need to be knowledgeable of your profession... They can't even seem to do that... They shit out on any game that wasn't sending money to their company or was too difficult to sit down and understand in the first 5 mintues without investing their time... sometimes they don't even finish the damn game...

They then spout bullshit and untruths about said game, delegate it some corny ass score and the rest of the lemmings that make up the mainstream marketbase shun a good game because some quasi-fake "general opinion".

Then the creators of said game take loss for their company. Publishers don't back those types of games anymore and we begin to see less and less of them.

And they get payed to do this... So fuck em.

They truly do ruin our hobby. Without a doubt.

Again, Im never butthurt about a score. Im butthurt on how I've seen this entire industry become a joke of itself as soon as big money and suits and ties started invading...

*Some legitimate points in a rant*

That's why you need to find a publication you trust. There's only a few for me where I take what they've written to heart - RPS, Eurogamer to name but two.

The problem, as I see it, is Metacritic.

If Eurogamer give Killzone a 7 I'll say that's a good score. The problem then comes in a second Metacritic listed site giving the game, say, 4/10 with poor or no justification.

I'm not saying 4 is the 'wrong' score for this, or any, game - after all, we all have opinions - but Metacritic takes that decision away from the consumer and says "THIS IS THE CORRECT SCORE FOR THIS GAME BECAUSE IT'S AN AVERAGE."

If Metacritic disappeared tomorrow I wouldn't shed a single tear.

better

No, the problem is the data that goes into Metacritic, not Metacritic itself.

If I'm reading a review on a motorbike I don't want to be told that it's dangerous to drive these vehicles and I should just go buy a car instead. If the editor wants to write that they should do so under a separate article, an editorial, not the review of the latest from Honda.

Likewise, I'm not looking for opinion pieces on the Vita (or Wii U, or any non-mainstream platform) when reading game reviews. I'm looking for criticism specific to that game.

I don't really read game reviews anymore as I find them no better than reading opinions on forums, often times worse actually. But the core issue is that even the people writing them don't seem to know what's the point, other than generating traffic.
