1st Gen may be the most iconic, but that didn't save Mewtwo from being cut. They may as well be expendable.
And who says they just need to keep the FR/LG Trainer? If they'll switch to a new gen of Pokémon, just switch the trainer.

Sakurai has already gone on record saying that he would prefer to preserve as many veterans as possible because he realizes they all have their fans. I don't think he would drop essentially three unique characters like that on a whim. It doesn't seem he holds "it would be a nice change of pace" a reason enough to drop a character for another.
And if they were truly expendable then I really doubt they would have been chosen to begin with.

I'm guessing they were chosen since he felt introducing PT would have the most impact via Pokémon that most everyone would recognize. I don't really see anything wrong with cutting them though since it'd still retain the same concept (three Pokémon characters in one).
Don't get me wrong, I loved playing as those characters (Squirtle!). I'd just rather have more gen diversity than what we've had previously (assuming we'll have a similar character selection for Pokémon, anyway) and I'm looking for more tweaked movesets across the roster. That's why redesigned characters like Bowser excite me.
Edit: Those mods are pretty BAMF. Would love to see a Mega Charizard.

Well, Shulk and Ridley are characters from actual Nintendo licenses. Neku looks like he comes from The World Ends With You, i.e. a Square Enix game.
These are awesome. Definitely gonna download them later.
Problem with a lot of bone hacks I found (unless they've fixed these problems) is they could completely break a character. Had one cool looking Luigi skin that make him look like the
, but if you threw him he flew so fast of the screen it was an instant KO. Yeah, had to get rid of that skin.

The only square enix characters that should show up are geno and red ninja with a basketball.
As enjoyable as TWEWY was, I feel he'd be better placed in a S-E crossover (like his appearance in KH 3D). I don't really think of him as a "Nintendo" character.

Yeah there's a few out there that have some kind of throwing glitches or have renamed bones making them crash during online play. If you don't mind the latter like me, ones with throwing glitches are actually very few (but then I focus more on creative texture hacks than random model replacements and then if I do add a model it's something fun and fits the character)

Probably a few but I don't see his appeal. At all.
I don't think it'll ever happen and he isn't on my wislist but I wouldn't be against his inclusion. Some of his fans can be... really annoying though, but I think they've long settled down.

Well, I'd have serious concerns about getting them mixed up visually, to be certain.
Evil versions of characters kinda bore me.
But I guess I wouldn't complain too much.

Though I doubt we'd see a Prime character outside of trophies/maybe a stage.
I think Dark Samus would just be too dark.
