Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | September 2013 | Token Indie Thread

Play Gravity Rush.

It has some flaws (mainly because of touch controls) but the story, the city and the world created around the game is awesome. Weird as hell, but awesome.
___

BTW VitaGAF, I'm only played the first Uncharted. Should I play Golden Abyss first and 2 and 3 later? Among Thieves is the only game in the trilogy i don't currently have. And it's supposed to be the best. So maybe it should be the last i play.

no, go play 2 immediately.

like right now.

Vita saved.

No, Vita doomed. Everyone knows a game that is not exclusive is not a real game.

I think now is time to buy both first and second chapter. Steam + PSN release should mean a good amount of sales for XSEED. We all need to provide our support. If Trails in the Sky trilogy is succesful, we will receive the newest PS3/Vita games. Handhelds need lots of JRPGs.

Good. GOOD. Speaking of which, are we even PSN friends?!

Edit: Yes. We Are. And you're playing Pure Chess for some reason.

This.

I LOVE Rayman Legends (Vita), VanWinkle you gotta keep evangelizing this game!

Yes, we've been PSN friends for a bit, lol ^_^

Is there a way to change your PSN name? I'd like to amend it one day, having it become the same as my GAF name....

Pure Chess ain't too bad - I played some Rayman Legends right before, though I always miss teensies and lums :(

Guys, need help:

I've just started Rayman Origins and am in love. I'm a few worlds in and loving it.

But now I've got an odd compulsion to buy Rayman Legends. Today.

I just like buying things; I'm not going to play it until after Origins, but I want it now. Should I? I'm trying to justify it by saying I'm supporting these games being released on Vita!

Play Origins all the way through and wait for Ubisoft to release their patch for the invasion levels before you buy and play Legends.

I'm still waiting, myself. :)

This is smart advice. Best to start at the bottom, then play the better games afterwards. ;)

I know dat feeling. Buying games is more fun than actually playing them. And if you buy on sale it's a feeling no playing session can match.

Okay, here goes...in the interests of space, I'll condense some games into a few categories. Also -- and I hope no one minds -- I've reviewed a lot of these for Gaming Age, so I'm going to do a little self-promotion and throw in some links.

Games I own but haven't played enough of to have an kind of opinion: Atelier Meruru Plus: The Apprentice of Arland, Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery, LEGO Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey, Muramasa Rebirth:, New Little King's Story, Ridge Racer

Games I own but haven't yet played: Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, Rayman Legends, Star Wars Pinball

Fighting games I bought and played for less than an hour, until I remembered that I'm lousy at memorizing combos and gave up: BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, Dead or Alive 5 Plus, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter x Tekken

Games I liked, but not so much I feel compelled to say much more about them: F1 2011, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Lumines: Electronic Symphony, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, PixelJunk Monsters: Ultimate HD, Sine Mora, SunFlowers, Superfrog HD, Super Stardust Delta, The Flying Hamster HD, Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition, Wipeout 2048

Games towards which my feeling is some variation of "Meh": Army Corps of Hell, Asphalt: Injection, BreakQuest: Extra Evolution, Big Sky Infinity, Chronovolt, Coconut Dodge Revitalised, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, Dynasty Warriors Next, Ecolibrium, EscapeVektor, Foosball 2012, Frobisher Says, HISTORY Legends of War: Patton, Let's Fish! Hooked On, Little Deviants, Men's Room Mayhem , Michael Jackson The Experience HD, MUD: FIM Motocross World Championship, Nun Attack, Orgarhythm, Paint Park Plus, Ragnarok Odyssey, Retro City Rampage, Total Recoil, Wake-Up Club, WRC 3, Zombie Tycoon 2

A-Men: Perfectly competent, but not even in the Top 10 as far as Vita platformers go.
Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland: Way better than I was expecting
Ben 10: Galactic Racing: Generic kart racer, but I got it for $2, so whatever
Burn the Rope: Basically the same as the mobile version, but I thought they adapted the game to the Vita well
Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified: A lot better than the reviews suggested, but ridiculously overpriced. Made me wish Gameloft would just release a Modern Combat game on the Vita.
Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention: Seemed really good, but I didn't put enough hours into it, and I had to delete it before I was done with it in the interests of precious memory card space
Divekick: Silly, dumb fun
DJ Max Technika Tune: I wasn't nearly dexterous enough to play it properly.
Dokuro: So freaking cute
Doodle God:
Dragon Fantasy Book 1: Fun at first, but it got really repetitive really quickly
Draw Slasher: Such a rip-off
Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable: Hated the underground levels, but blowing up buildings brought me so much joy
Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two: Maybe the best version of the game, but still thoroughly mediocre
Escape Plan: As launch games go, pretty impressive.
Farming Simulator: Oddly addictive

FIFA Soccer /FIFA 13: No idea why I bought FIFA 13 when it was just a reskin of FIFA Soccer, but I did, and that was a total waste of money
Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims in HD: Looks lovely, and enjoyable while it lasts
Fruit Ninja: Way overpriced even after the price drop, but still a fun time-waster
Germinator/Ms. Germinator: Basically the same game twice; Ms. Germinator is a little better, but only because the non-gameplay stuff is improved.
Gravity Rush: One of my favourite games on the Vita; until we get either an inFamous game or that sorta-rumoured Amazing Spider-man port, it'll have to do as far as open-world superhero games go
Guacamelee: I don't get why people like it so much. I like how it looks, but the gameplay did nothing for me.
Hotline Miami: Insanely hard at times, but still so good
Jak and Daxter Collection: Loved the first game, couldn't stand the second and third ones
Jet Set Radio HD: I wasn't into games when the original came out, so I went into this without the nostalgia factor...really hasn't aged well.
Jetpack Joyride: Such a time-sink (in a good way)
Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge: Bad graphics, difficult controls, not very easy to understand if you're not already a fan of rugby
KickBeat: Neat idea, but the music was absolutely terrible, and it didn't work far too often.
Knytt Underground: It's...something
Kung Fu Rabbit: Underrated gem of a platformer
LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes/LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7:/LEGO The Lord of the Rings: They're LEGO games, alright. I actually liked all three better than their PS3 counterparts, even if the cutscenes were straight out of the 3DS versions
Life of Pixel: Gets pretty ridiculously hard in places, but still fun
Limbo: Amazing
LittleBigPlanet: Exactly what you'd expect an LBP game to be -- for better and for worse (but mainly for better)
Machinarium: Just beautiful
Madden NFL 13: Neat in the sense that it's basically the console version of Madden 12 on a handheld, but it still felt like a huge letdown compared to the console version of Madden 13
MLB 12: The Show/MLB 13: The Show: The first one was primary reason I bought a Vita at launch; the second one is still pretty high quality, but it doesn't feel that different
ModNation Racers: Road Trip: Fun, but it's a shame there's no online
MotorStorm RC: Lousy controls, but at least it was free, I guess
Need for Speed: Most Wanted: Best racer on the Vita
Nikoli's Slitherlink: I've played this a tonne, and I still only have a vague idea of what I'm doing.
Nikoli's Sudoku: It's sudoko...not much more to say than that, really.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus /Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus: The second one suffers graphically in some (er, a lot of) places, but I still enjoyed both games
Persona 4: Golden: I wish I liked this as much as everyone else, but I just found there to be too much dialogue and not enough action
Plants vs. Zombies: Pretty similar to every other version of PvZ...which means, of course, that it's one of the best games on the Vita
Pure Chess: This felt kind of lacking in content -- perhaps because of my pitifully short Friend list.
Quell Memento: Surprisingly relaxing for a puzzle game, but still really addictive
Rayman Origins: So challenging that I only made it halfway through; I'm eager for it to arrive on PS+ so I can go back to it
Reality Fighters: Gimmicky, poorly-made shovelware
Resistance: Burning Skies: Better than its reviews, but still terrifyingly ugly to look at and play
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken: Enjoyable weird
Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen: I found the controls actively got in the way of my enjoyment of the game, particularly when it came to fighting
Silent Hill: Book of Memories: I liked it, but I also wasn't a big Silent Hill fan going into it, so I didn't have any memories to be sullied
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time: The lagging, the load times...this is the only cross-play game that I put more time into on PS3 than on Vita
Smart As: Loved it
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed: At harder difficulties, it was near impossible, but it was still fun
Soul Sacrifice: Great online, really boring offline
Sound Shapes: Such incredible music, and equally incredible platforming
Spelunky: I see why people liked it, but I just died too much to be able to enjoy it.
Spy Hunter: Surprisingly fun. Still mediocre at best.
Stealth Inc.: Loved it so, so much
Sumioni: Demon Arts: Loved the art style, but it sank into button-mashing repetitiveness really quickly
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz: The most forgettable game ever -- as in, I know I played it because I imported it from the UK, and I remember when I traded it in, but I honestly don't remember a thing about it
Supremacy MMA: Unrestricted: Absolutely awful graphics, equally awful gameplay
Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack: Great sense of humour
The HD Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character: Simple, but fun
The Walking Dead: Amazing game, though the load times are ridiculous.
Thomas Was Alone: Loved absolutely everything about it - possibly my GOTY for 2013, at least so far
Touch My Katamari: Bought it at launch, found it underwhelming, but I recently rebought it when it was super-cheap and I'm eager to see if my opinion has changed
Treasures of Montezuma Blitz: Highly addictive
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3: About the only fighting game I like, largely thanks to its Idiot Mode (or whatever allows button mashers like me to pull off combos)
Uncharted: Golden Abyss: Not as good as any of the console versions, but I still like it as a proof-of-concept that games like this work on the Vita
Unit 13: Didn't give this one nearly enough time before trading it in, so I'm hoping it gets added to the IGC, or else I'll have to rebuy
Urban Trial Freestyle: It's a pretty blatant Trials rip-off, but I still had a blast playing it
Velocity Ultra : Fantastic game, loved the visuals and the music
When Vikings Attack: Like a crappy version of Katamari
Welcome Park: Neat intro to the Vita's features, even it it didn't have any replay value
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward: Interesting, but I never played 999 so I was a little lost most of the time

I've been enjoying Mutant Blob Attacks lately. I was itching for a platformer and got it cheap a couple of weeks ago. It's combination of katamari-absorption stuff with some fun 2d platforming hijinks , along with the small but enjoyable level sizes, make it a great little portable game to pick up for 5 minutes at a time.

Hey guys, just wanted to ask if any you had tried Real Boxing on the Vita yet. Been eyeing it since it released. Screens look great and it sounds good, but I'm wary of blind buying at prices like this.

Don't need it to be amazing, just enjoyable to play.

this will not help at all you since I don't like boxing and I bought it on my portable tank and not my Vita(is it even out for Vita?)...but here you go.

it's ok-ish I guess, I think it copy Fight Night mechanisms well but focus more on endurance and timing, responsive punches, good animations and sense of weight.

I'm playing Disgaea 3 between classes and I want to know know if it's worth grinding the item world. I really love this game but I don't know if that is necessary to beat the story mode.

So is it normal for me to be mid-December in P4G, and have my game timer at like 75 hours? ;^^

Holy crap, I haven't spent this much time with a single game since, like, Grandia on Saturn. Thank goodness it's portable, because I wouldn't be able to finish it otherwise.

The last battles in story mode get much more difficult than the previous ones, so you will want to have some upgraded equipment and levelled up units. It isn't technically necessary though. I liked item world just for raising levels on reincarnated units.

Thank you very much for doing this! I really appreciate it :)

Goddamn I thought I have a lot of Vita games already but some of you are just insane, hahahaha.

Nice to know Vita has some real hardcore supporters though :)

Ahh thanks for the tips :) I'll grind when I get stuck in the story missions.

I can't imagine people getting excited over iOS ports coming over to Vita the same way they have been with the indie games.

I can't imagine those indie games are selling as many Vitas as bundling those iOS ports with an SCE game with an 8GB card alongside a Vita would.

I've got a little bit of time to kill, so I'll jump in at the behest of laughingbanana.

I'm going to stick with native Vita games that are on my trophy list. This may mean there are games I have (from PS+) that I never bothered to download and play because I had no interest or didn't like them. Hell, some of the games in this list were 1 session and delete because I thought they were terrible. :)

Assassin's Creed III Liberation* -- Solid. Really felt like AC in my hands. Some framerate issues, but not enough to ruin the game. Some bugs, too, but most of the catastrophic ones were patched out before I played. Multiplayer was a terrible terrible idea and a waste of time.
Atelier Totori Plus -- Only played for a little bit but seems to be a worthwhile JRPG. The graphics were nice and the combat seemed enjoyable. The voice acting seemed terrible and I'm unsure about the alchemy/item crafting mechanic, but for now I look forward to going back when I want to play a JRPG.
Big Sky Infinity -- I was disappointed by this... there are sections where it's hard to tell how or why you died. The powerups you work toward getting never feel like they're doing anything... The music and some of the graphics are kind of cool, but there's nothing special here.
Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend -- Wonderful port of the console version. Works well on Vita because it's a 4 button fighter (mostly). Graphics are wonderful, everything is fluid, 60fps.
Chronovolt -- Terrible. An insult of a PS+ title.
Dead or Alive 5 Plus -- Can't really comment as I haven't actually played any yet... normally I don't like DoA games, but hey... $10 for a well done port and my Vita has a lack of 3D fighters anyway...
DJMAX Technica Tune -- Seemed well done... I found even the early stuff to be challenging as I suck at these kinds of games. Music selection seemed diverse even though I wasn't familiar with most of it. The variety was nice as I was able to find a few songs that were even close to something I'd listen to normally and it wasn't all just J-Pop or whatever.
Dokuro* -- charming and fun puzzle platformer. It was a steal at $10. It was criminal to pass it over when it was less than that... and free on PS+? Shame I already owned it. Sometimes it's a little slow and you NEED to switch the change setting to use buttons instead of touch... but it was very cute and entertaining.
Dragon's Crown -- Don't know, haven't played yet, waiting for news on the new patch that's live in Japan being released here first.
escapeVektor -- reminds me a little of Pac-Man. Starts out really slow... you need to get your FW level up before you judge the game. Really challenging really quickly.
Escape Plan -- this was a solid title. some of the controls were a little wonky, but since the patch came out, it's much better or so I'm told. I enjoyed it for a runthrough but not enough to buy the DLC.
Flying Hamster HD -- Reminds me a little of Parodius... it's a cute little shmup but nothing that will satisfy your shmup cravings... definitely worth the $4 or so though, if you like shmups.
Foosball 2012 -- Another terrible PS+ game.
Frobisher Says -- This was fun. I liked it enough to buy the DLC packs. Some of the AR camera stuff is wonky and frustrating... but you can turn a lot of those games off now. It's like Wario Ware, I think? Definitely worth checking out for the price of FREE.
Germinator -- Seemed okay but not really my cup of tea.
Gravity Rush -- A wonderful exclusive. The DLC is worth it if you get it from the start, I think. This is another game where it starts out slow and you need to level up before you can really enjoy it. I'm hoping for a sequel.
Guacamelee! -- one of the best metroidvania games ever. great sense of humour. surprisingly deep combat and challenging platform sections. check out the DLC if you're grabbing this and haven't played it.
Hotline Miami -- FANTASTIC on vita. I played it on PC and thought "I just want to finish this game, I'm getting frustrated now!". Then I bought it on Vita and played it with some headphones... Changed my mind completely... went from "kind of overated indie game" to "holy crap in a pita everyone needs to own this if they own a Vita".
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational -- seems solid. people rave about it. it didn't really click for me before I needed space on my memory card, so it's in space crucnh limbo hell right now. If I ever get a bigger card, I'll bring it back and try again.
Jacob Jones -- solid Layton like puzzle game. If you're a trophy minded person, beware of the stupid "find all the soda cans" trophy. That was annoying. Other than that, it was really good and I was/am looking forward to the next chapter, should it be made.
Jetpack Joyride -- not a bad game once they patched in button controls. especially not for free. seems like the standard "runner" type iOS/android game though.
Jet Set Radio -- I never played this on Dreamcast, so I have no nostalgia factor. I wanted to like it, but it's one of those games that's difficult because the controls suck. I couldn't get into it... thankfully it was a free PS+ game.
Limbo -- don't know, haven't played it. I will go through it soon.
LittleBigPlanet Vita -- FANTASTiC. Should have been LBP3. Best game in the series, by far. It takes everything you know about LBP and refines it into one hell of a portable console experience.
Lumines -- Great puzzle/music game. I'm not good at it so I haven't become addicted... also, I'm not huge on the music genres used in it, so I'm not as gung-ho as everyone else, but it's an amazing title.
Men's Room Mayhem -- At first I liked it... seemed solid. Then the trophy hunter in me showed up and I ended up trying the "challenges". This became infuriating to the point where I wanted to throw my Vita. The game was deleted as I felt like it was just impossible. I do NOT recommend paying money for this.
Mortal Kombat -- Fantastic port. 60fps, all console ontent and then some. Online worked well when I tried it. Biggest knock people put on it is the lower poly models and low quality textures... but that's hard to notice at 60fps so it's only really a problem in the pre/post match stuff and even then, I don't really care about it myself.
Motorstorm RC -- Took awhile to grow on me, but it's a fantastic game. Reminds me of RC Pro-am and Offroad from my childhood days. Definitely worthwile, the DLC is worthwhile too; just get the full pack.
Muramasa Rebirth -- ABSOLUTELY STUNNING VISUALS (see the screens I posted). Combat is a little bare for an "action game" since everything revolves around [] button. This leads to some imprecise actions too, which can be frustrating. It can get boring running from A to B sometimes, those are valid complaints I've seen about this game. Overall a great title though, even with the knocks I have on the new translation style.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma+ -- The drop to 30fps (and even then, the slowdown at parts) make this hard to recommend. It's solid, but I'm glad I got it for free. Especially with some of the bow aiming touch screen stuff.
Nun Attack -- Fun little iOS game. I liked it enough to just about perfect everything and get 100% of the trophies.
Oddworld Stranger's Wrath -- Solid port. Fun game for the most part. Gets REALLY boring toward the end and you end up usin the same 2 or 3 weapons... but the 1st half of the game was wonderful.
Persona 4 Golden -- FANTASTIC. The hype doesn't lie. If you like JRPGs, you'll probably like this game.
Plants Vs. Zombies -- PS+.. played the hell out of it on 360/PC, so I never felt compelled to boot it on Vita.
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale -- it's an okay game. It's better with friends... the cross-play is nice. Single player it gets boring quick. I like it better than Smash Bros. for sure. I wish it had some better PS characters though.
Pure Chess -- seems like a good chess game, pretty graphics, asynch play. nobody on my list that's played a game with me has had the attention span to finish, so I deleted it for space.
Rayman Origins -- My favorite classic mario-style platformer of the past 15 years... just amazing. I loved the game on PS3, so I bought and played it again on Vita. I wasn't disappointed.
Resistance: Burning Skies -- Average overall, but a good fix for an FPS proof of concept on Vita. I think it gets more hate than it deserves. Very easy platinum, if you care about that sort of thing.
Retro City Rampage -- Terrible. Abomination. PS+ is apparently run by sadists.
Rocketbirds -- This is a mixed bag. I really liked part of it. If I wasn't a trophy hunter, I'd probably have liked it more. Between the busted online, collecting the flags, and some other issues, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. But a decent game overall.
Silent Hill: Book of Memories -- Better than people make it out to be. But I can't imagine it without the patch or DLC. I wish the online worked better.
Sine Mora -- Fantastic. This game is in the same realm as Rayman Origins for me. I love it -- everything about it -- and so I bought it on Vita and I wasn't disappointed. The only knock is that in some of the later stages, you can run into some slowdown and it's a bit jarring considering most of the game runs at 60fps.
Sly Cooper 4 -- Impressive port. Solid experience. Recommend getting the PS3 version for cross-save so if you hit some of the framerate/draw distance issue areas you can just switch to ps3 for a bit and switch back.
Smart As... -- A good Brain Age knock off, but it can get old/boring kind of quickly.
Soul Sacrifice -- Spectacular. I've never liked a hunting game before (I bought MHFU on PSP thinking I might) and while I don't like comparing the two, this one is leaps and bounds above Monster Hunter for me. The art direction, sound, combat... everything is amazing. There's a lot of variety and spell crafting... there's grinding if that's your thing, etc. Online plays pretty flawlessly and it's been supported by a metric ton of good/free DLC. Highly recommended.
Sound Shapes -- A disappointment for me. I love Jonathan Mak and Quesy Games... I loved Everyday Shooter and this was one of the main reasons I wanted a Vita (back when it was exclusive and not cross-buy). However, I wasn't into the level creator, death mode is terrible, and the main levels end up being too easy and short. Some of the community levels were well done, but I gave up on it and deleted it after I got my platinum to save space.
Spelunky -- fantastic and frustrating at the same time. I both love and hate this game. The cheap deaths it throws at me lately have me raging, but I'm compelled to get better at it so I can be like Esoteric!
Stardrone Extreme -- Was this PS+? Or did I just buy it because it was $2? Either way, I wasn't impressed. I didn't like the controls. Deleted.
Stealth Inc. -- Fanastic. I stopped playing because of other games, but the game looks great and plays great on Vita. My only knocks were that NA didn't get the DLC levels for free and there's no real reason to replay the levels to unlock the upgraded clones for use.
SFxT -- wonderful port, but suffers a bit from the "how do I play a 6 button fighter on a pad". I've had that issue with SF games since SF2 on the SNES... so I've always been a fightstick guy and it's hard to play for me. I end up neglecting some buttons which is terrible in this game because you have things like tag and whatever mapped to dual button presses. PS3 owners tend to discriminate against Vita owners if you try cross-play.
Sunflowers -- iOS game. Bought it to support Atelier. Still better than RCR, which released the same week. Got bored of it quickly, deleted.
Super Stardust Delta -- fantastic. everything you could want in a portable Super Stardust. I like the modes where you can get rid of the gimmicks and even better, I liked how they let you remap touch gimmicks to buttons in the options.
Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack -- Drinkbox delivers again. After playing this, I went and bought the PS3 game, but haven't really put any time into it yet. A charming little platformer with some nice replay value if you're up for going for gold on every level. Loved it so much I bought it on Steam when it came out there. Loved it enough to buy it for friends so they would play it.
Touch My Katamari -- Quality katamari on your handheld. People knock the DLC, but you don't have to pay for it, just grind a little if you want it. Overall, it's a solid game and worth the $3.75 it was going for on sale a few weeks back.
Treasures of Montezuma Blitz -- After the trophy patch update, this was a regular daily game for me. I loved playing it and trying to get high scores... good leaderboard implementation too. I ended up getting bored of it though and wasn't willing to grind another 70 hours for the last trophy.
UMvC3 -- fantastic (I use that work a lot here... Vita must have some fantastic games, i guess). port of the console version. Works better than SFxt because you can put the assists on the shoulders and then it's only a bit challenging to do snapbacks instead of doing your core special moves. Online was kind of dead when I last played. Wish it had cross-play with console.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss -- Impressive bit of technology. I never want to play a console Uncharted again because I'll miss the "touch to climb" stuff. That was a god send. The aiming takes some time to get used to, but a good effort overall and impressive for a launch title. 3rd best game in the series for me.
Unit 13 -- great game if you like TPS. Bite-sized missions... interesting level up mechanic and character variety. It was fun 5-staring everything. Co-op is supposed to work well, though I didn't really use it.
Urban Trial Freestyle -- Seems like a fun Trials type game. Sometimes the controls/physics are extra wonky, but it's fun and overall pretty well done. Small file size and reasonable price are also bonuses.
Velocity Ultra -- solid game concept. I ran into a lot of bugs and the controls were terrible in spots. Don't look here if you're looking for a shmup though, it's not really like that.
WipEout 2048 -- amazing visuals. felt great when I was playing it regularly... I'm not a huge racing game guy but I keep this on my card. Load times were kind of bad, but worth it. DLC from owning HD and Fury was also outstanding and added a lot.
Zen Pinball 2 -- Seems like a solid pinball game. I like the "arcade" feel here, as I don't want a pinball simulator... then again, I had a lot of fun with metroid pinball and sonic spinball... so yeah. Haven't tried the star wars tables, but the PvZ table was my favorite.

I want to do a games list, but I won't be near a pc for a few days, and I am not really wanting to type it out on a phone...we shall see how bored I get now that my portion of driving is done. 4 more hours to go!

Kickbeat is actually pretty fun. The demo was really hard at first, but I got the hang of it and finally beat the first song after about ten tries. Bought the game and it surprisingly starts out much easier than the demo did.

Really fresh experience so far.

you're such a sweetheart :-D

i wish there was a way I could stream my vita online

Yeah, so I was just on 1-4 with 7 lives and 8-10 bombs and ropes... doing good, playing smart.

I see an arrow trap down below, so I go grab a treasure chest and drop it in front of it. Arrow comes out, splits the chest open and continues in a straight line... into the shop. Kills person helper you can buy, shopkeeper blows my brains out before I know what's going down. Fuck.

Those deaths are really hard to see coming and requires a really good memory of the particular level layout.

I suppose the only thing I could say is, why wasn't he mad at you already and where was your shotgun? :-P

Most of my runs don't "start" until i've made it and got through the black market. If you're going for score, it really starts at your first vault you open up and ghost.

I wouldn't worry about doing any of that until you've completed the game both ways (4-4 and then through 5-4)

if you haven't unlocked meat boy and van helsing yet, make sure to unlock the short cut to the jungle. getting the rare event "the dead are rising" and making it through the worm can take some time. the worm is a bitch tbh

It does work. The song's prompts do match its beat. This can be proved objectively - the enemies are on the beat or half-beat (but on the easiest difficulty - which I'm assuming is the only one you played - the scripts don't even use the half-beat much) at a precision of something like 2ms.

That's one of the downfalls of rhythm games with no pre-existing reputation. If people suck at them, they assume something's wrong with the game, whereas with a game like Rock Band, when people suck, they realize they have to get better and do so.

Based on your lack of skill development and paucity of information about the music import mode in the review, I'd wager you spent very little time with the game. Did you even unlock and try Beat Your Music? (Yes, the unlocking scheme sucks - that is a very valid criticism.) I wouldn't consider a review of Audiosurf very complete without some analysis of the feature that lets you use your own music, yet you offer none for the first beat-matching game ever to have a music import mode that actually works.

KickBeat may be an inexpensive indie game, but not every inexpensive indie game can be fully grasped in an hour or two of playtime. It's designed to be played over dozens of hours and still provide challenge and room for growth. One or two hours in, most people haven't even gotten to the real game yet at Hard difficulty (Normal, with button icons on the ground, is just there to help people transition from traditional rhythm games.) and are worlds away from the game's ideal experience at Expert/Master. It's like if you saw nothing but Easy mode in Guitar Hero and concluded that it didn't really make you feel like you were playing guitar in connection with the song, and thus the whole concept was a failure, even though that is exactly what it does when you develop the skill to play at Expert.

The soundtrack criticism is a valid opinion, I suppose, but what $10 indie game has a diverse, well-rounded lineup of mainstream artists? (aside from something like Tap Tap Revenge, which can do that because it's all DLC-based) Usually it's some chiptunes or generic electronic stuff that has equal or less diversity compared to the KickBeat soundtrack. Could we have found a few songs that were better? Sure, maybe, (we definitely tried - denied), but the expectations here seem way out of whack with what they normally are for a game in this weight class.

And even though it doesn't match your personal tastes, a lot of people like it. I mean, slam Papa Roach all you like, that song has over 50 million views on YouTube and over 150K likes. We make games for fans. Do you write reviews for fans, or for yourself? If your review is supposed to be your subjective opinions on the game and its music, fine. But if your review is supposed to be geared towards an enthusiast video game audience, it's way out of sync. After all, gamers are the ones who comprise the majority of Blue Stahli's audience and that put him "on the map" on youtube in the first place. And this standard of "score the game base on how much I like the soundtrack" doesn't jive with well-reviewed rhythm games featuring nothing but Fresh Prince-like kiddie rap (Parappa), nothing but sugary J-pop (DDR and others), or bland, homogeneous techno (too many to list).

Furthermore, lumping the entire soundtrack into "nu metal" is just plain wrong. Even if you are lumping in the hip-hop stuff that has guitar tracks in it (e.g., Styles of Beyond), and redefining "nu metal" to include Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, it's still less than half the soundtrack. The review is simply misleading in that respect.

Finally, the game exists as an alternative to what's out there right now. It's targeting people who don't want another dance game, another odd Japanese-styled rhythm game, another music performance game, another game with bars, arrows, icons, etc. in the foreground and the scripted, non-interactive action in the background. And the soundtrack reflects that - it's got a much different character than those of other rhythm games. It's a game about rhythmic fighting. And the soundtrack is loud, angry, aggressive, kinetic, rhythmic fight music.

These total random moments are some of Spelunky's best. All you can do is laugh!

I was in 1-x, doing mediocre. Put a bomb on a high up ledge, then dropped down. Didn't know there was an explosive crate just on the edge of the blast radius. It blew up far overhead, allowing one of those movable blocks to fall straight down, directly on top of my head. It was pretty far up there, too, as it took almost a full second after my bomb blew up for it to drop on me. Soo great.

Sweet mother of god @ bluemaxima, matthewwhatever & corrosivefrost. Now that...that is passion, lol.

Anyway, just wanted to take a moment to disagree with everything bluemaxima said about Zen Pinball. :) Fantastic game. He isn't wrong to suggest Zen's physics are a tad wonky, but that didn't make the game less enjoyable. In fact, I find it to be more fun that way. Lends itself to a much faster paced and higher scoring game.

As far as the table designs are concerned, Zen wins hands down. No contest. Generic looking? I don't even know where that's coming from. Have you experienced some of the crazy shi*t Zen tables do? Especially compared to Pinball Arcade, which looks like it was ported from the Genesis. Sooo, yeahhh. I play Zen almost religiously in pursuit of higher scores, so I'd be glad to add anyone who plays as well! I ❤ Zen.

Also, to the person who asked about side scrolling schumps, Sine Mora. LOVED it. A bit weird and obtuse at times, but i found the game-play to be fantastic (especially the time control mechanic). It looks incredible on vita's screen as well. And this is coming from someone who dislikes most suda51 stuff. Not sure how involved he was with this, though.

Ok, last edit in response to some of the suggestions. I'm just going to come out and finally say it since I've straddled the fence on this for a while. If you have the choice, stay away from Sly 4 on vita and play it on ps3. I don't think it's a good port at all. In fact, it's part of the reason I haven't finished it. Obviously, if you only have a vita, it'll do. But, yeah. That's my take on it.

where are you headed?

wheres your vita?!

should be playing spelunky
Goin to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to visit some family. Vita is now in my hands! Well, lap, due to typing and only havin 2 arms...need to work on that. Time to spelunk!

@breakfuss, I enjoy ZP, send a FR if ya want. Psn in profile. I think I have one more slot left. I don't play it too often, but I'd love to have a pro on my friends list to know what I need to shoot for.

Knytt is not for everyone but imo you didn't understand its philosophy, since you named it, i could say that in demon's souls you need to understand by yourself how to kill an enemy, in knytt you need to understand how to reach a certain point, the level design is the "enemy" or maybe i should say that the entire game is a big puzzle game, where you always need to use your brain to reach the points you want.
In demon's souls and guacamelee the difficulty is represented by the enemies, in knytt by the level, infact in knytt enemies are nothing more than moving obstacles or traps.
In demon's souls the focus is in the combat, in knytt in the exploration and the platforming.
I don't know if i was clear, but i guess no matter what you won't change your mind anyway.

Of course I understood the philosophy. It's not like the game was my first time playing a puzzle platformer. At the end of the day, the game just wasn't very enjoyable. I was no longer involved or engaged in its world or game play or story. I don't drop words like "suck" out there, but Knytt felt like amateur hour when it comes to game design and execution. I don't need to be blowing things up or killing things in my games, but I, at the least, need to be having fun while I play. After 15 hours, I wasn't having fun with Knytt anymore, so I dropped it. I have a plethora of other games that I do enjoy playing that I could be spending my limited game time with, so I play those.

Sure there's a list, but, feel free to add me on your Vita friends list. bigwinnerx

Have Spelunky, planning to get KZ:M, Dragon's Crown showing up today. P4G, too, not sure that has friends related items...

re: that Kickbeat review. All I listen to is hip-hop, really (plus some dubstep, old classic rock and soul once in awhile), and aside from Marylin Manson I haven't recognized any of the songs in Kickbeat... not my genre at all, but I can enjoy any kind of music so it still sounds good to me, and good for the gameplay. Sometimes I'll get hit with a blue halfbeat sequence that starts on the side I thought was about to be the second hit, and get thrashed for a second, but I haven't encountered a single sequence that isn't onbeat and in tune with the music.

I'm like 90 minutes from Philly in Harrisburg

What does the camera do in spelunky?

Very little. It can kill bats and skeletons, but mostly just stuns enemies. If you snap a picture of the ghost, it turns into a girl posing for the camera. It stuns her for about 3 seconds. Could help to ghost a particular level
