PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Weird that they didn't pair it with a PS4 controller and some cursor solution to all Vita touch features (but even then you'd have to hold a trigger to activate BACK TOUCH MODE).

Maybe its a cost issue and they wanted this to be total budgetsville.

I think it has more to do with the fact that PS4 isn't launching in Japan until February, so no DS4s will be available in Japan when Vita TV launches, and any DS4s they do make will be for the Western markets.

When this thing arrives in the West, I totally expect DS4 support similar to how you described it. Since this thing does remote play of PS4 games, it needs to support the PS4 pad as standard anyway, no?

1GB is not enough, I supose it would admit some kind of memory cards, probably Vita memory cards...
That's just the internal memory, it accepts Vita memory cards for expanded storage. Read the spec sheet linked in the OP for more info.

I wonder if they'd be able to use this product with some games on PS4 that would support split screen.
It'd be cool to be able to play a game cooperatively on two different sets, but through the same system.

media support won't be that great, assuming they have the same apps that vita has. They'll need to add lots more for it to replace a roku/apple TV

Anyone can confirm if Gravity Rush has also the option to use all the gyro/touch commands alternatively with the sticks? Is there any chance I will be able to play this game with Ps Vita Tv ? :( It's the only game I'm interested in on Vita and I don't want to buy a whole system for just one game, but the price point of Vita Tv is just perfect for that.

Though the 3DS is easily beating the Vita it's not the tour de force of success it should be and Nintendo's way of dealing with it and Sony's clearly show two completely different viewpoints of gamers needs.

Sony gets it.
Nintendo does not.

The VitaTV effectively is a steambox for your tv with all the indie support it is getting, extends your PS4 capabilities and allows you to play the Vita's more console esque titles on a big screen.

It is brilliant.

Except it can't play some of Vita's most popular games and is about the same price as a 2DS when you toss in a decent memory card. It's about the best choice Sony had, but it just shows how badly they missed the market in the first place and apparently they don't think they can dig themselves out with software like Nintendo is gonna try to do this holiday season with Wii U.

I mean when you look at the tech specs alone and see that a XL and Vita are the same price but Vita can't even put up a fight sales wise, something went horribly, horribly wrong.

Won't play gyro or touch heavy games. Unfortunatelythose include uncharted, gravity rush, little big planet, wipeout and Tearaway.

For me there is not a lot left that I MUST play in the vita library that justifies this.

Gyro should be fine. I'll still keep my Vita for those games that requite Touch, but this for everything else. Hopefully Touch gets made optional from now on though

It's not on the list, I wouldn't count on being able to play it.

This is because specs don't matter nearly as much as GAF and the like would have you believe.

So, will you still able to play all of the PS+ Vita freebies if you have a subscription but no Vita handheld?
Cos allowing that would totally sweeten the deal for couch gamers.

Am I still on the same planet?

The Vita wasn't selling because it needed games tailored to a mobile market and not the gimped down experiences from home consoles it was getting.

And now we get a home console which enables you to play the gimped down versions... at home again. (minus the touch controls) and people are cheering? I don't get it. I just don't understand the purpose of this thing.

Agreed. Makes no sense at all. This isn't going to help Vita much.

How do people not get this. It broadens the market appeal of the device.

LARGER MARKET APPEAL = MORE DEVELOPER SUPPORT

Just because it has the feature of being played on a TV doesn't mean people are going to not develop mobile experiences. What narrow viewpoints.

That was my first and only reaction when I saw the announcement.

However, after overthinking, I think it's a Brilliant idea.

Way to alienate us Vita owners. Shits goin on Craigslist today...

Think about your post for a sec. The VITA is in a dire situtation, if Sony gets millions of people buying this thing and more games are sold as a result it means 3rd parties and Sony will give it more support and you get more games.

You know what? I want one.

Hell, it'd be superb if Sony went the whole way and let it function as an Android device too, but I guess this is good enough.

What the hell was Sony thinking?! Bwahahahaa!!!

This is worse than the 2ds announcement. That one made some sense for Nintendo. This....I don't get it. IT has no appeal at all. Sony, Sony, Sony. WTF?!

I don't understand, why can't Vita games be played through the PS4? It's more than powerful?
Because:
- brute forcing software backwards compatibility is extremely inefficient and the results are unstable.
- hardware BC ups the price of the PS4 because of the extra components.

This device basically gives you Vita BC for a one-time price of €75. It allows publishers to see money from Vita games bought by PS4 owners, without going through the effort of making a separate PS4 version.

Well for one thing, I don't want a Vita yet this appeals to me greatly.

I get to play games like Persona 4 Golden at a low entry cost to be played on the big screen. Throw in PlayStation plus and the PS4 streaming, and it's superb value.

A device that run Vita OS, please support 1080p and upscale Vita games!
Very interesting concept. They need to revamp the OS for broad appeal.
Oh, I think some games need to be patch for none touch support, that totally doable

Roku boxes sell millions a year. Not to mention its competitors like Apple TV raking up 10 million sold in little time. Even Boxee has sold millions of units.

While the VitaTV needs more media content, if this thing takes off like any of the above hardwares, I'm sure it'll get it.

We're living in a world where even frickin Ouya was able to ship over 100K in its first month, outselling the Vita. I don't see how it could be seen as a bad thing, unless we look at it and go "Options? Bleh!!"

1/ Vita games on a big screen with DS4. Some people have zero interest in an handheld console but are actually interested in the Vita game library.
2/ You can play PS4 without having the actual console locally, just a small box that you plug to the internet.
3/ The killer price.
4/ all the Media apps (I don;t really care about that but still nice)

It will vastly widen the reach of the Vita which is great for all those Japanese developers and for us as gamers.

Still, PSP compatibility should be a lot easier. Isn't there practically a PSP emulator already for PS3 that devs can use? I'd rather have PSP games on PS3 and PS4 than a separate device tbh. And eventually give me PSVita games on PS4 too! ;)

Still, I could imagine getting the Vita TV for the bedroom, cool device regardless of the above.

This makes me wonder, why Vita is even a thing.

This thing don't have a touchscreen, can't play on the go, and supports the DS3. If this is Vita final form(this is not even my final form yet? lol), why even launch the Vita? This thing would be fine as a PS3 TV and all the few exclusive Vita titles would have done better if they were launched for PS3.

So, IMHO a Vita with HDMI out would be better for me, could still play games on the go and at the TV withot buying two devices. This feels like a PS3 TV without PS3 games, will wait for the PS3 TV for $100.

How do you play for example, DJ Max Technika? Or can you only play games that has absolutely no touchscreen functionality? Someone said a certain game wasn't compatible, because the menu was touchscreen only...

Except it can't play some of Vita's most popular games and is about the same price as a 2DS when you toss in a decent memory card.

Is this confirmed? Because then even games like Monkey Ball, that don't use touch for gameplay will be unplayable (stuck in the menu). Tearaway is launching this year and stillhas a lot of touch control, there has to be a way to use touch on the Vita? If it is confirmed, I hope they will release the new non-touch-OS for existing Vitas, too :).

Provided it gets DS4 support then most games will work fine.

Not sure how Uncharted: GA is going to work without the DS4 though.

I hope Killzone Mercs, Uncharted (and Uncarded) and Unit 13 are patched will non-touch controls. Doubt the later will happen since Zipper is dead.

Reading the spec sheet, looks like it would only be able to play Vita games with the DS3.

I hope we could use the DS4 to play Vita games

I wonder what resolution it'll play games at. If it slightly higher, I'm all in. Would line to play Soul Sacrifice at 1080p.

Didn't it stream PlayStation 4 games?
That's the thing. It "stream" ps4 game, but the ps4 cannot be played on the tv it is hooked up while the streaming session is ongoing (if i am not wrong)

An extra ps4 will mean you can play 2 ps4 games on 2 seperate monitors at the same time. Not the case here.

You can also add,

5/ Some people already have a whole bunch of Vita games that they can't play because they subscribe to PS+ but don't have a Vita.

Although it's true that not all of them are compatible (I'm sure more will be but not all).
