PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I'm guessing this will be Gaikai compatible at some point as the Vita is going to be. Although Gaikai will never be perfect this could be a decent way to play your games in a friends house.

I don't get it. At all. Look, I love the Vita. I think it's the best handheld ever made. An absolutely fantastic system and I think everyone should have one. But I'm not gonna lie. It's not exactly swimming in good exclusives. The Vita is a great system because it has a great library of games and is portable. The majority of games on Vita are also vailable on PS3 and soon to be PS4. What's the appeal of playing these games on a tv when you can already play those same games on the big screen with a PS3/4? Vita is great because it has a screen on it and because you can take it with you and play it when and where you wish. Being able to play the exact same games you can already play on PS3/4 on your tv via this device is not appealing.

Plus the few exclusive titles the Vita does have won't work with this. Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Wipeout, LBP, Killzone, Tearaway etc all won't work on this. The majority of Vita games probably won't work. I don't understand the point.

The ONLY value I see in this is the ability this gives you to stream PS4 games to a separate tv. This doesn't mean anything to me since I only game on one tv in the house anyway, but I see this feature having an appeal to some.

"You can remote play PS4 games through PS Vita TV on a tv in another room (!!)"

Is the biggest thing people are overlooking. This is megaton.

Exactly. I am assuming this works through the internet, which makes this device awesome for LAN parties. Fuck bringing your entire console. Just bring a controller and this little thing.

Sony's main intent is to sell softwares. In that regard, this is a good supplement for VITA, especially for those people who are not into handheld.

Except those people want to play games that are exclusive like Uncharted, which this won't give them the ability to do.

Than it's not for me I think - I'd love a retro PS1 multtiplayer box with the ability to play modern games for small money.

I should have watched the video first - appearently you can use multiple DS3s and play PS1 multiplayer?! That's great - I think I'm in!

So wait, does this actually come out in US/EU? And it doesn't support Dual Shock 4? Even though it can stream PS4 games.
It's only been announced for Japan so far. I doubt we see it in NA this year at all because they're launching the PS4 here. Most likely we'll get it in February/March.

It doesn't support DS4 at launch because it's launching 3 months before the PS4 is released.

See those big AAA games that people wanted on the Vita? This justifies them.

See that casual market that occasionally plays games and mostly want to stream movies and music? This is for them

See that PS4 gamer that wants to play in different rooms in the house? This is for them

See that gamer that wants a cheap, low powered device to play indie games on the couch? This for them

See that kid that broke his vita and has a bunch of memory cards and games that would otherwise go to waste? This for them.

See that Vita gamer who was playing a game on their commute, but never sees the point of continuing while at home because they have a huge TV for gaming? This is for them.

See that nostalgic gamer that only wants to play some old PS1 games but doesnt want to buy a huge bloated console for them, just something small and simple? This is for them.

So many applications and scenarios.

This. This thing kills so many birds with one stone. Not to mention, it stomps on several competitors' toes.

Ouya: Hey we do a cheap Android indie console!
PSVTV: We do that too, and our graphics are better and our controller doesn't suck.

Apple TV: We do media streaming from local and online sources!
PSVTV: Same.

Wii U: You can remotely play your console games on the Wii U gamepad!
PSVTV: On a gamepad? Fuck that, we use a whole other TV.

What the fuck? Absolutely insane, but kind of genius in a way. The way it works with PS4 sounds incredible, as well. I have a Vita, but for that price I definitely see myself getting one of these.

Am I still on the same planet?

The Vita wasn't selling because it needed games tailored to a mobile market and not the gimped down experiences from home consoles it was getting.

Games "tailored to a mobile market" already have not just one preferred platform but two: iOS and Android.

The mobile market isn't ignoring the Vita because of its library. The Vita could have the exact same mobile game library as those platforms but a dedicated gaming handheld can't compete in a world dominated by multi-use devices like tablets and smartphones.

A Vita TV on the other hand could potentially dominate the cheap media+game console market, which will then in turn benefit owners of handheld OG Vitas by widening the audience of the platform and thereby attracting more third-party developer support.

Except those people want to play games that are exclusive like Uncharted, which this won't give them the ability to do.

I'm really hoping Sony is smart enough to patch Wipeout and probably Uncharted (haven't played it but I can't imagine it uses the touchscreen for a significant purpose that can't be simulated with dual analog).

Games that rely on touching specific places on the screen during gameplay are probably SOL, even with the DS4.

man not gonna lie, something about playing Gravity Rush on the TV is making me sequel

Is like that being pregnant?

This makes me wonder, why Vita is even a thing.

This thing don't have a touchscreen, can't play on the go, and supports the DS3. If this is Vita final form(this is not even my final form yet? lol), why even launch the Vita? This thing would be fine as a PS3 TV and all the few exclusive Vita titles would have done better if they were launched for PS3.

So, IMHO a Vita with HDMI out would be better for me, could still play games on the go and at the TV withot buying two devices. This feels like a PS3 TV without PS3 games, will wait for the PS3 TV for $100.

This thing is a cheap device that can increase Vita's user base. Maybe if Vita wasn't in such dire situation this wouldn't have happened, or maybe they had it planned all along who knows. More Vita OS devices = more support they will get = more games = more users = more support = etc.

I don;t get the people who think this is useless. On the contrary this may bring more life to the Vitas. No way to know for sure, so we'll have to see how it performs.

if it is purely a vita, then no. But being on a TV in the living room for instance, there might be the tiniest possibility that Sony adds account support. That'd be great if they did, but I wouldn't count on it

It's interesting...I think there is finally hope for multiple account support now. But not on the PS Vita handheld.

Before, the excuse for no multiple account support was because the PSV, much like PSP, is seen by SCE as a "personal" device.

Now with PSV TV, it turns it into a much more shared device. And even SCE sees it that way, as seen in the promo video with multiple people playing on it, or watching content.

Now the "personal device" excuse is out the window.

This is the big question about this to me. The digital PSV libraries between the major regions are unbelievably different.

Still, ability to switch account region would be the all-encompassing solution.

Been wanting to get a vita to play p4g and gravity rush for a long time now, nearly got one after the price drop. Will definitely be buying this when its available in the US for those games and ps4 remote play

Definitely not a product for me, and while it's finally nice to be able to see Vita games on the big screen, I would rather have seen a video out on the system refresh.

I think this also sends a confusing message to developers. In a way, it fractures the user base. Did you make an indie game with touch screen components (or maybe you're trying to port a popular game from mobile or tablet platforms)? Well now, you'll have to either custom develop a version that supports both touch and analog input to reach the entire future userbase, or accept the fact that it won't be playable on this new device, cutting into potential sales.

Again, I understand it's not for me, but I'm genuinely surprised to see so much excitement for the device, since I don't think it really helps the platform.

How do people not get this. It broadens the market appeal of the device.

LARGER MARKET APPEAL = MORE DEVELOPER SUPPORT

Just because it has the feature of being played on a TV doesn't mean people are going to not develop mobile experiences. What narrow viewpoints.
Sony's move is simply brilliant.

Traditionally, Sony has always aimed for a high-tech experience at home. Last generation, the gap they created for low-end console by releasing their €600 behemoth aka PS3 and the demand for it was entirely swallowed up by Nintendo and their Wii.

Not only did Sony release a new low-end platform, the platform is identical to their albeith small mobile platform by which they
1. avoided further segmentation of gaming devices
2. may maintain third party support for their underperforming mobile gaming devision.

The lack of touch should be a concern. It is a nice idea but without major patches to games, it's a fancy PS1/PSP hybrid because most Vita games have some sort of touch requirement.

This doesn't replace Vita at all.

Alternatively you could just carry your system to a different TV, the PS4 probably weighs like 5 pounds. Plus I fail to see how this is competing with the Wii U, like at all...

More developer support? Yeah, that would be awesome...
But you guys are overlooking the fact that now there will be a lot of games that won't use the unique characteristics of the Vita (due to them being designed for VitaTV with optional stuff for the Vita), such as the front and rear touchscreens, and the fact that a lot of the good games available just NEED these specs.

No Gravity Rush on VitaTV? wow

One more use case scenario:

Cheap Netflix box (Vita has app for that) + cheap way to play PS4 games on more than 1 TV without having to buy multiple consoles.

Assuming the DS3 gets replaced with a DS4 for the US and UK release, I wonder if that DS4 will be still be white..

THAT's the Megaton.

Yeah, it's so much easier to unplug the PS4, drag it across the house, set it back up on the TV and repeat every time we want to remote play.

Silly.

Great, but at 720p or 1080i....

Well at the rate we're going hardly any games will be 1080p. Plus it's just a bonus if you want to play on a second TV cheap.

when Apple releases their official controller, do you think people will complain that it fragments the market, or rejoice that they can play some of their games using a controller now?

I'm not sure how many games I've played on vita that had a meaningful use of touch that couldn't be easily replaced by a button press. Sure some would need patching, and some may never do that. But I bet most would play just fine - if you want more, just buy an actual vita - the choice is yours.

It's been a while since I played it, but I believe only the gravity slide uses the touchpad the rest are hardware controls

I doesn't matter that it's "only" the gravity slide that uses the touchscreen. If a game has touchscreen functionality, it won't work on the PS Vita TV.

Of course we still don't know what will happen if you try to start up the game. Maybe you can play the game, but can't use gravity slide. Maybe they'll let you boot up DJ Max, so you can stare at the start menu. Or does these games not bootup at all? No one knows at this point.
