PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

They just eliminated the need for a ton of people to own the Vita...

Maybe, but would they make more money on this device than they would the Vita? Seems like a good way to continue making money on PS, PSP and Vita games. It is a bit of a strange move, a cheaper device where you need a physical PSVita would make more sense, this seems a bit more in desperation but as a consumer it is GREAT to have every choice. (I own a Vita)

Smart move by Sony actually, PSVita wasn't doing too well as a handheld but this, this will surely help. Many people who own a portable console play them at home anyway so this is a great product. $100 is nothing these days for a new device....

Why on earth would anyone want to play Vita games on a big screen if they have PS3/PS4? SUnless they use their Vita as a portable old school JRPG machine...then I can understand. H

opefully Sony doesn't try to market this too hard...this stuff has been done before and I can't imagine it being a big success.

If you're right then yeah that would a failure on Sony's part. Media features are the selling point here if we're talking about general consumers.

That said, "no one" knows what a Vita is right? A mainstream consumer probably only has the vaguest notion of what a Vita is so there's no chance of confusion or negative association. If handled properly this could be a successful stealth relaunch of the Vita brand as well.

You seriously trust them to handle it properly? As I said, the products name gives us a good indication on how they will treat it. This will be launched, what, three months appart from ps4?the messaging won't be there.

People dreaming this will go head to head with Roku or apple tv are dreaming. It could. If Sony where another company altogether. As it stands, this will be a novelty for a few.

They've already said this I bet but will they be patching games to ditch touchscreen stuff? Uncharted on this would be great without the shit.

Very weird announcement. While the device itself is kind of neat, I'm not really sure who this is aimed at other than enthusiasts and the Sony faithful. The fact that it won't support games with touch controls is disappointing and that seems to eliminate quite a few key games.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

At least for first party games you would think.

See those big AAA games that people wanted on the Vita? This justifies them.

See that causal market that occasionally plays games and mostly want to stream movies and music? This is for them

See that PS4 gamer that wants to play in different rooms in the house? This is for them

See that gamer that wants a cheap, low powered device to play indie games on the couch? This for them

See that kid that broke his vita and has a bunch of memory cards and games that would otherwise go to waste? This for them.

See that Vita gamer who was playing a game on their commute, but never sees the point of continuing while at home because they have a huge TV for gaming? This is for them.

See that nostalgic gamer that only wants to play some old PS1 games but doesnt want to buy a huge bloated console for them, just something small and simple? This is for them.

So many applications and scenarios.

you also forgot "people who would maybe like a PS4 on a second TV in the house, but don't want to spend $399 for another one for occasional use."

it's actually a pretty good companion to a PS4, all things considered.

I'm definitely in for one these. Even better than TV output would have been in the new Vita model.

Kidding right? It's going to break some titles like LittleBigPlanet because they use front/back-touch. Since this doesn't support that some titles are gonna break and they even admitted that.

Having TV-out would be basically the same thing, just without the "720/1080p" support they're touting here.

I guess this kills my hope for the system to get a DS3 pairing support like the Go did and also (thankfully) kills Backtouch and front-touch support. Maybe now I'll get more proper-button control games on the system...

And honestly, depending on the price I can't see it competing with Roku. People that want a dedicated streaming video device will just go that route, not get a handheld in sheeps clothing.

Wow, this is pretty attractive. Especially with all the titles available through PS+ for Vita (most are compatible it seems.) Well done Sony.

Also. I don't see slots on this. So are you going to have to download them somehow and play it on the device? Does this have a HD or something?

Why doesn't this support a Vita controller as well? Seems like an obvious addition

Other than that its an interesting idea. If i can have this in the bed room and the PS4 in the main room and I can migrate my PS4 around, that could be pretty cool

The Vita doesn't have enough major games that appeal to me for this to be a valid option. I like the Vita mainly because it gives a way for me to play indie games on a handheld system.

I actually never thought of those aspects... My guess is 3rd parties might be able to send out their own patches??

I use an ethernet for my PC/PS3. I usually get download speeds of around 8-9MB/s. On Vita I get 1MB/s.

This should fix that

Theoretically you could also put your current memory card into the Vita TV, download everything you need onto it faster via ethernet, then pop it out and take it with your regular Vita.

It's not actually the same. VitaTV will damage the PSVita development ecosystem. This way you could have a plug&play console without damaging your own portable

VitaTV will actually help PSVita ecosystem, it lower the cost of entry to play Vita games to $100, it could help rise the userbase and give a more healthy environment for developer to confidently make games for Vita.

on the other hand, the portable PSVita will have to sell it's hardware based on the merit of being portable, if people want to play games on the go, they can choose to buy PSVita, the new PSVita is no doubt a cost cutting measure from Sony but the price is the same as the current OLED Vita. basically, Sony is not planning to lose anymore money on Vita hardware, if Vita2000 sells, than it's great for Sony, every single sales will be a profit, if it didn't sell, at least Sony is not losing money on hardware, they'll produce just enough to meet demand and still make a little profit from the hardware.

Sony strategy now is to get money from software royalty, not from hardware.

They've already said this I bet but will they be patching games to ditch touchscreen stuff? Uncharted on this would be great without the shit.

They must have some kind of solution to this.

For these PS Vita TV compatible games (list here: http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvitatv/game/psvitalist/), I wonder what they'll be doing:

Lumines Electronic Symphony - menus are touchscreen, back touch required for building up meter, touch screen to activate powers
Soul Sacrifice - menus, black rites and a certain secret trophy
Ninja Gaiden - back touch for ninpo activation, first person view?
Ragnarok Odyssey - touch for items / powers

These are all in the good to go list though.

Also. I don't see slots on this. So are you going to have to download them somehow and play it on the device? Does this have a HD or something?

It has:

vita game card slot
vita memory card slot
USB port - not confirmed to be able to be used as storage

I feel like this should be rather cool (Sony's version of the Super Game Boy/GBA Player but with a ton more features? That's awesome), but all that's going through my mind is the fact you can't play games that use the touchscreen. Maybe in the future, they could make it work with the PS4's touchpad on the controller, but off the top of my head, you can't play stuff like Gravity Rush (perform a move by holding the corners of the screen w/ your thumbs) or Lumines (touchscreen main menu, despite buttons/analog stick working for the main game).

I guess people who'd be getting this would be fine with that, but I can't help but think it'd suck to be playing a game & then suddenly BAM touch screen required, can't make it any further. Guess they'll just have to be careful on making sure the games they get aren't touchscreen required.

In hindsight it is funny to see the 2DS ---> 1DS ----> 0DS jokes now.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Playing Vita games on your TV is ultra cool, but completely ditch the touch screen and back panel controls? And to think people were saying Sony would say goodbye to the OLED screen and go for LCD display to make Vita cheaper. Who would have though they would find a way to make it even cheaper?

Uhm, with the right games and at that price this thing could end up being very profitable for Sony.

It's been a while since I played it, but I believe only the gravity slide uses the touchpad the rest are hardware controls

You can't navigate through menus iirc. Meaning, you won't get into the game unless they patch it. Same with Lumines and many other games. Lots of menus of the early PS Vita games seem to be touch only?

think of it as an entry level games console that also does media streaming and has some other features some people might find neat.
Compared to the myriad of other devices on the market that basically cover the media part and the 4 other games consoles (ps360, xb1, ps4) that will offer a wider variety of games at a resolution better than most Vita games.

Agree.

I don't think the ability to play PSVita games is actually the selling point here, almost irrelevant actually.

A $100-$130 PS3 Digital would have been much more interesting. No disc and a tiny form factor with access to everything excluding the PSVita catalogue.

A disc-less PS3 will never look like this.

PS3 is full of expensive, proprietary, power hungry technology like Cell. Vita was designed using COTS mobile phone components which are easier to shrink and which are low cost to manufacture because of economies of scale. It was a deliberate strategy.

I'm scratching my head thinking who this is aimed at? It can't be a large group of people right?

I read this thread and find myself scratching my head too. Almost everyone see this as amazing news and I can't think of any good reason why I would need to buy this thing.

It takes out the good thing about a portable system (its portability and integrated screen)
and lets you play its library on a TV screen.

Given that you need to buy a controller it costs almost the same as a basic PS3... why not just buy a PS3? "because I want to play Vita games on it" "WHY NOT JUST BUY A VITA THEN? O_o"

Old man yelling at cloud I guess, but I don't get the appeal. Good for you guys that will give use to this device tho.

They've already said this I bet but will they be patching games to ditch touchscreen stuff? Uncharted on this would be great without the shit.

Soul Sacrifice is getting patch for alternative control without touch screen.

I also imagine DualShock 4 compatibility will help with many vita games that use simple touch input

I highly doubt Sony would let you plug in a HDD or something like that. That would defeat the purpose of proprietary memory cards. It's probably there to charge the controller and/or use the controller when it's out of battery and/or to sync the controller.

They've already said this I bet but will they be patching games to ditch touchscreen stuff? Uncharted on this would be great without the shit.

Would still have camera shit to get rid of as well. I wonder what AC: Liberation HD will do about that?

Theoretically you could also put your current memory card into the Vita TV, download everything you need onto it faster via ethernet, then pop it out and take it with your regular Vita.

I could and probably will. But if this works as intended, I'll probably use a TV and DS4 to play 90% of my Vita games from this point. Will only use a normal Vita for those that requite some sort of added functionality

Won't buy one until Sony says whether or not touch screen games will work. Does that also include games that use the accelerometer? Would it use sixaxis for that?

Also this:
