PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

There's already many devices out there that do the TV/streaming thing, and the Vita library isn't exactly setting the world on fire. I guess it's a good idea for a niche audience who will play their PS4 in a different room.

I was thinking about getting a Vita after the price drop but this...

Monster Hunter 4 better drop on this thing in some form soon (bundle please). I would get two!! Sony was waiting to spring its Xanatos Gambit on the world.

I read this thread and find myself scratching my head too. Almost everyone see this as amazing news and I can't think of any good reason why I would need to buy this thing.

It takes out the good thing about a portable system (its portability and integrated screen)
and lets you play its library on a TV screen.

Given that you need to buy a controller it costs almost the same as a basic PS3... why not just buy a PS3? "because I want to play Vita games on it" "WHY NOT JUST BUY A VITA THEN? O_o"

Old man yelling at cloud I guess, but I don't get the appeal. Good for you guys that will give use to this device tho.

Actually, you're making a lot of sense here. Now I'm confused.

The DLC for games will be region-locked.
Do you mean in the same way they are on the Vita? They have to be the same region as the original game? That wouldn't be an issue for me, I just don;t want to buy one and have to rebuy Japanese versions of the games I already own.

Enable the Vita to be used as a controller or risk encouraging developers to stop innovating with key Vita features. Why not make it compatible with ALL Vita games? It wouldn't effect any of their markets either. People would still have to buy a Vita to play games like LBPVita and they'd have to buy VitaTV to play it on their TV. It's a win win situation for Sony.

SONY MUST ALLOW THIS.

Based on the "A day with Playstation" video the girl at one point continued to play knack from her vita via Remote Play AFTER leaving the house. I was under the impression that remote play only worked over local Wi-fi network, not over a WAN.

So does this mean we could potentially use a PS Vita TV to play our PS4 games at a friends house instead of bringing the entire PS4 along!?

why would it need an android environment? Way more games than android at better quality.

netflix support is native and built in, support for music streaming services is native and built in.

as far as the mass market is concerned that's about it.

Im just thinking that there are countless games released for dead cheap on Android and iOS that I see my colleagues, GF, her children etc playing that arent ported to Vita. You're probably right though.

Monster Hunter 4 is 3DS exclusive isn't it? Why would you think Monster Hunter 4 would ever come to a Vita?

Couldn't they make it support DS4 l for the touchpad controls?

They could, but it doesn't help with rear touch or camera. Besides in some games touch screen support via touch pad will be fine since they won't require finesse. But in games that require a visual reference for accuracy will be a nightmare

Potentially, it could be tied to a PS4, then given to a friend in a different time zone. Ond PS4 would suffice to be played by 2 households.

I want this, so bad.

As a Vita and PSP owner, this is such an awesome little device.

I have to give it to Sony, they redesigned the Vita, announced Vita TV, and announced quite a few new Vita Titles over the past month. They are not giving up on it, and I am not either.

VitaTV could open up the Vita to a whole new audience, at a much lower entry price. I just wonder how it will look on a 50 inch TV, thats my main question.

I'm scratching my head thinking who this is aimed at? It can't be a large group of people right?

Probably will be marketed as Sony's answer to the AppleTV/Roku with stronger proper gaming support, as well as a handy companion device for the PS4 ("Ever wished you could play Playstation games on another TV without moving the whole console? Now you can!") I have a feeling they won't make the Vita support a huge point of marketing, but just a bullet point among a long list of shit it does.

And I get the feeling that Sony doesn't really care if this is a huge success or not. Just something to hopefully build up the Vita audience, thereby getting stronger developer support for Vita devices. This could also possibly expand the audience within the Playstation ecosystem a decent bit - just a side thought on this, how popular are AppleTV & Roku in Japan?

Curious too cuz I doubt it'll look as nice as their OLED screen.

I think this will just about kill the Vita as a platform for unique games and I think that it is worth doing so.

What you have left is a unique little indie box, cheap as chips, access to lots of media services and with the unique ability to also stream PS4 games.

Basically:

Plays games a Vita can (PS1, PSP from PSN and a select library of PS Vita PSN/Retail cartridges)
Has all media features of Vita (photo, video etc.)
Has remote play PS4 or PS3 to Vita streaming.
Supports Dualshock 3 and 4 controllers.

so for someone with a ps3 and wont have a ps4, this basically just gets me some vita games...which...isnt really worth the worth the 100 fee to access....

maybe i will pass on this.

The DLC for games will be region-locked.
Not necessarily. The HW region doesn't matter at all. What matters on Vita is that the user account, DLC and game are from the same region. You could have all three being from NA while playing on a JP console.

All ya'll expecting patches to remove things that are in the game because Sony mandated those features... yeah... keep dreaming. Sony basically said "yeah, some games aren't going to work on this and we're breaking them. Deal." in that trailer.

This is basically a side-move to try to avoid having to redesign the entire system that they should be doing anyway. LCD instead of OLED? Good. Not having TV-out but doing this instead? WHAT???

Guess you're right, even with this system in mind for "future developers" might actually allow both control options, even though like you said the key futures will be missing, which is the point of the VIta to begin with.

They don't bother with HDMI TV out on the Vita but they put money into this. What the shit.

Use Vita internals, and you avoid the additional costs of Screen / touch / camera :/ gyros.

Will be a great competitor for the Roku. Makes tons of sense.

It won't kill Vita as platform for unique games. Problem is if this Vita TV sells much more than Vita ever does. I guess that So y could in the end stop producing Vita and keep on selling Vita TV as a cheap console for casual people

PS1/PSP games are extremely cheap at this point. cost isn't really the barrier. You can get them easily for 5 dollars or so, with no in game microtransaction bullshit.

on top of that, If you have PS plus at 50 bucks a year (which most will, given the PS4 needs it for multiplayer) sony literally throws free games at you every month.

I suppose this is the only way I will be able to stream Vita games.

it doesn't stream vita games. It IS a vita. it streams ps4 games.

You guys know what this means...

In 60 inches, baby!

Any chance of Sony patching the likes of Wipeout and Uncharted to work? Without some of the biggest Vita titles working I don't see the value.

Yes, Remote Play has always been like that.

You do not need to be on the same network, you just need to have both devices on an internet connection.

Media box aimed at who though? Gamers or the mass market? (Who already have 5 other non-gaming choices to chose from)

Maybe both? It is true that there are already many media boxes to choose from in the market but gaming capability has never been a factor of choosing those boxes. Now Sony is jumping into the race and everybody knows what Playstation is. General public will see the Vita TV as a box that can do the same thing as other 5 boxes, but has a Playstation name on it. It is the first time gaming will be included into consideration when people shop for a media box and for that regard Sony ready don't have a competition.
