PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Maybe both? It is true that there are already many media boxes to choose from in the market but gaming capability has never been a factor of choosing those boxes. Now Sony is jumping into the race and everybody knows what Playstation is. General public will see the Vita TV as a box that can do the same thing as other 5 boxes, but has a Playstation name on it. It is the first time gaming will be included into consideration when people shop for a media box and for that regard Sony ready don't have a competition.
You're describing a vary narrow and small segment of consumers

So the whole library of psp games available to play on my TV? Tempting...quick someone post the list of notable psp games that are not on PSN so I can decide if I want to buy this.

I don't buy handhelds.

But now I will download every Vita game on PS+.

I will buy a PS4. I wouldn't mind buying a cheap Vita TV.

You know what's better than off screen?

Being able to use another TV without physically moving any hardware.

Sony! :bow

You guys know what this means...

In 60 inches, baby!

it's still going to be psvita resolution...

Seeing I don't have a DS3, it's not going to be very good value for me personally, but holy cow this is an awesome initiative.

It won't kill Vita as platform for unique games. Problem is if this Vita TV sells much more than Vita ever does. I guess that So y could in the end stop producing Vita and keep on selling Vita TV as a cheap console for casual people

I think it will, no one is going to design for touch screen or anything else now. Every game will need to be designed to go on big or small screen. It will attract indie games and the type of games that usually go on PSN and XBLA.

Why would someone make a unique game for it now, anything you make for it will easily be able to go on PS Store and/or XGS as well.

Based on the "A day with Playstation" video the girl at one point continued to play knack from her vita via Remote Play AFTER leaving the house. I was under the impression that remote play only worked over local Wi-fi network, not over a WAN.

So does this mean we could potentially use a PS Vita TV to play our PS4 games at a friends house instead of bringing the entire PS4 along!?

Sure sounds like it. Kids are going to love this. Makes me think of my lan party days. Now you can have all your friends in one room, with just this thing,a dualshock, and LCD tv. Win.

Anyone know how many hotel rooms let you plug an hdmi cable into their tv?

The selling point would seem to be the remote streaming of PS4 games. The Vita capability is almost ill conceived. We're talking about having to blow up the games that look great on a 5 inch display to fit on your HDTV; the low resolution is going to make those games, and especially PSP games, look bad.

I mean, it's cheap, sure, but you'd be better off spending the extra $100 if you actually want to play Vita games.

Look at it like this:

$150:

- PSP Library
- PS1 Library
- Tons of Indies
- NetFlix
- Party Chat
- PS4 Streaming
- Music Unlimited player

In the future (possibilities)

- Gaikai
- More PS2 HD titles on Vita (likely)
- More Media Apps
- more Vita titles (bigger audience)

Instead of redesign VITA to include HDMI out, Sony created this to be another revenue stream. It's quite smart actually.

It's very smart.

No screen lessens the cost and barrier to entry while still providing an ecosystem for Vita hardware.

It's a great response to the struggles Vita has had as a dedicated handheld.

There's now three PlayStation entries

$100 - Vita Box
$200 - PS3
$400 - PS4

$200 - Vita that can interact will all of them

Metal Gear Acid
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII

True, but with PSP out of the picture, some studios may bottom out prices if the audience is big enough to make money on a 5 year old title. I'm sure people wouldn't mind spending $3 - $5 on a title, even if they look "horrible".

Which begs the question, what is the latency of this thing when used over the internet?

I don't see how it is small. Imagine a household looking for an alternative for their expensive cable tv and they find a media box that can stream movies, tv shows and music to TV plus it has a lot of games for their kids. I think that covers very wide audiences.

I don't see how the factors you listed above suddenly make it harder to justify making games specifically for the Vita ecosystem. The only thing this does is make touchscreen support questionable, and for that I'd still wait to see if the packed-in DS3 isn't replaced with a DS4 in the future to remedy that before discounting touchscreen support completely. Other than that, you have no less reason to make Vita-specific games now than you did before - if this takes off in a notable way, I'd say it gives more reason to, in fact.

If Sony is smart they'll run a promotion on PS+ and music Unlimited again (deep discount) to suck people in. With an iPhone app, home options, and tons of others, it could look like a much better service.

I don't know why but I have a feeling we won't get this outside of Japan. Didn't they also release a Japan-exclusive PS3 product (tv-recording stuff?) ?

Anything like that would be good for it and give it more value.

Any info about Vita TV internal ram? Still 512MB?
I hope they add Ram to 1G, 2G better, 512MB just too small for 1080i
I mean if this device wanna be some sort of proper TV box competitor, it'll need better App support.
I hope Sony will announce new SDK for Vita TV, get more developer on board.

Considering the rumors of Amazon making their more gaming-oriented set-top box, and Apple possibly incorporating more gaming-focused features into the AppleTV, I'd hardly consider that segment narrow or insignificant.

I just think the resolution issue is going to piss off a lot of people who buy this thing, plug it in, and get to see what 544p looks on a 1080p screen.

Niche high end product vs. Mainstream oriented product supporting a system that's struggling, especially outside of Japan.

People mention indies, but how many of them use Vita's additional functionality? (gimmicks)

Requires touch screen

game will need to be patched to support dualshock 3 or 4 controller. Sony already demand PS4 games to offer alternate Vita control, now they can demand the other way round with all Vita games to offer dualshock support.

Soul Sacrifice is already announced to be patched for alternate control mode

Insane...

Everyone who was in the market for Vita to add to their PS4 will now get this!!

Well played Sony. I was wary because I thought they were discontinuing the handheld Vita to replace it with this..

Releasing this in Japan first is such an odd choice. It's the territory with the least interest in general in non-handhelds, and one of the flashiest features ("Play your PS4 games on another TV!") won't even be an option for three months after release.

I know Vita is at least barely clinging to life in Japan, as opposed to its death-coma in the rest of the world, and that's probably why, it just feels weird.

I'll happily take being able to control every Vita game with a DS4 from now on. I'll still use the Vita, but only on the very rare case where I take it to work or something
