PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Not sure if new but saw this as an update on the following site: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/09/09/sony-announce-a-new-console-playstation-vita-tv/

UPDATE: We’ve been sent a few more details on the system from Sony.

There will be a system software update to patch in DualShock 4 support.
It can connect to other PS Vitas via ad hoc mode.
Two DualShock 3 controllers can be paired to the system, allowing for playing PS1 titles.
PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.
Will support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device
Will have vita controller support? Now I'm in.

I just thought of another potential problem with this. When people buy this and decide to buy some retail Vita games with it, how are they going to know what's compatible and what isn't? People like us might be pretty informed on the matter, but about the average consumer? I would not be surprised if we hear complaints from people buying a Vita game in a store and then going home to find out that that specific Vita game doesn't work.

Sony will probably mandate that developers put in alternate controls for software.
Much like how developers need to allow for PS4 -> Vita remove play control differences.

Don't see this answered yet, but...

If you already have a vita... how do you use this?

Anyone with 2 vitas? I assume with ps+ you can cloud sync saves... digital games would work best unless you enjoy swapping vita carts between the vitatv and your vita.
I really wonder about that. If you're a Vita user, play on the go and once at home you want to resume on Vita TV, I guess there are three ways:

1. Cloud saves.
Upload your game saves from your Vita MC to cloud storage. Download from cloud storage to a Vita TV dedicated MC.
This presents the following caveats:
- Plus required
- Won't work well with the few locked saves games, which enforce a 24h rule between uploads or downloads. The only Vita game I can think of that does that is Katamari and it won't be supported in the first place.

2. Switching memory cards.
Take your MC out of your Vita and put it in VitaTV. That's the most intuitive scenario to me but in the current state of VitaOS, the experience would totally suck.
Caveats: with the current VitaOS, inserting a memory card requires a hard reset (power off/power on) of the Vita. Switching mem cards used to fuck up your bubbles but it doesn't anymore thanks to an update a few months ago.
My best guess is that an OS update will address this because it's pretty much a prerequisite to VitaTV, that would be consistent with that recent update I mentioned. If they don't, that scenario will really suck.

3. Save transfer over cable/LAN
They could add a feature that allows you to copy saves over USB between a Vita and a VitaTV. Or the same thing inside a LAN (without that cloud stopgap).

Regarding the multiple Vitas question, in an ideal world, they'd get rid of the one user account per machine limit of VitaOS since it makes even less sense for this. I don't know if they'd go as far as doing it for Vita too but I hope so.

All in all, this will probably lead to some nice usability upgrades for a few of us Vita owners.

Okay let's say I have my PS4 in my house and a VITA TV in my dorm room two states over. Can I use remote play to access my PS4 games and play like I actually brought the console to college? Would the PS4 have to be turned on for this to work?

If the media software (Netflix, etc) actually supports 1080p/DD+ ... this becomes a really interesting alternative to a Roku or Apple TV.

If they can beef up content support (Vudu, etc) ... and get some decent codec support for local content ... this might really become a thing.

Damn, why did I turn off the computer early? Missed this AND the GGXrd trailer. Anyways, I probably won't get it because Gravity Rush needs a touchscreen to play, but if this means it will lower the resale price of Vitas I'm all in for this.

You'd be able to turn on the PS4 remotely through this thing, I believe. The only concern would be lag.

Did that video confirm a new version of Soul Sacrifice? Delta?

It was kinda like an audio version of translating using Google translate and back again.

Can this thing stream Blu-Ray to another TV?

We won't know until we see Sony's remote play features fully explained.

I never said there will be less reason to make less Vita games, I said there will be less reason to make less exclusive Vita games.

We will see how many new Vita exclusives are announced in the next year. If I was making a game that had to work on a TV with DS3 I would make sure it worked on a PS3 as well, thats all i'm saying.
So? The Vita exists to let you play your games on the go or in asynchronous fashion with friends and family who are watching/playing something else on the TV.

Sony's bottom line here is to move software because moving software 1. makes them money on royalties and 2. makes their development partners coming back and keeps them involved.

The Vita format is far easier to work on than the PS3, so I'd argue the opposite of your hypothesis will also hold true, why make a PS3 exclusive now when Sony will gladly help you get it on Vita as well? It'll be free sales.

I really like this product for Sony. It's a solid play for the Japanese living room where big expensive consoles are becoming a thing of the past, complete with a nostalgia play on the Playstation brand and strong Japanese PS1 and PSP libraries of software.

It's a legitimate extender/second TV box for the PS4 in any more core gaming oriented household via Remote Play.

It strengthens the Vita's market appeal to developers and app publishers, likely leading to more Vita software and more television viewing apps. It can also serve as a "gateway" to the Vita's library, resulting in people who enjoy portables picking up a Vita to go with it.

It will move more PSV memory cards, allowing Sony to get more aggressive with card pricing thanks to economy of scale profit growth.

Lastly, it establishes their own foothold in the Ouya/Amazon Box/Apple TV/Roku segment, one with a unique set of differentiating features (strongest gaming box in the segment).

All that for a box that likely is at break even pricing or even possibly making a profit. They need to bring the dual shock 3 bundle pricing down aggressively over the next few years, and the same is obviously true for PSV memory card pricing, but if they do both they could have one hell of a Playstation brand Trojan horse on their hands.

Gaikai also becomes a legitimate industry-wide threat with this product as well, stepping up the move into a low cost streaming box future much sooner than many expected.

If this takes off I'd expect the Vita chipset to quickly find a home inside many Sony TVs and Blu-Ray players in the near future as well.

For the love of god, why o why this doesn't have an SD card slot.

Sigh.

It has an extra memory card slot?

Even a PSP can turn on a PS3 from a remote location... so that part shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure how viable or possible remote play between Vita/VitaTV and PS4 will be between two different locations though... or if you will truly need to be local to your PS4.

This thing is mind boggling ingenious! It's the perfect entry level device for anyone that wants a media streamer and is mildly interested in gaming and its also the perfect extender for any hardcore Sony gamer. It bridges the casual and hardcore markets so beautifully that I'm kind of speechless.

I really hope everything works smoothly with it. I guess this is the real result of the Gaikai acquisition? I hate playing 'console wars,' but MS is in some trouble if yet can't answer back with a similar $99 X360 type device.

I would buy this if it supported SD cards or usb hard drives. Pretty fantastic way to get people who have PS Plus into the fold. However, as it is, it's still too expensive.

I can imagine some developers doing this, but could Sony really demand from every developer to retroactively built in DS3 controls?

PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.

yo dog...

if I can just play vita games on my vita but on the tv... i'm good.

was expecting that i need to get another vita for tv play, so $100, not an issue.

problem is most upcoming vita games are like... indie stuff that is coming to vita and ps4 anyways...

I'll have to be quite drunk before i get this lol

This is a Vita I could see myself buying. Not right now, but a hunnert bux is easily spent.

How interesting. I doubt MS, Apple and Nintendo like where this is going. Nice kick to the nads, that. MS now gets to fight for the livingroom on two fronts, Apple just had its neglected Appletv ripped off and thrown back at them, and Nintendo is now caught with their WiiU between SonyTV discount level and PS4 money splurge level in addition to the feature cloning. Sure, the devil is in the detail, so nothing is set in stone yet, but its a nice troll if nothing else.

Looking forward to the actual implementation.

Gaikai support for PS3 titles is going to make this a much better device one day.

As it is now, i'm not impressed.

I want to know if I can plug in a Blu-ray upstairs in my media room and stream it to my bedroom TV where I don't have a BD player.

The Vita TV supports Nasne so it will work with RVU enabled Blu-Ray players coming in 2014 but only at 1080i.

I have pretty much all the Playstation devices, I already own a PS3 and a Vita, I don't need this. But somethin inside of me desires it...congrats on the marketing and hype Sony !

Unless it can run XBMC its not an ouya competitor (granted ouya doesn't need a "killer".)

That's what I am thinking. If it runs XBMC as well as Ouya then that makes Ouya even more irrelevant. It is really Ouya's only redeeming quality feature.

Well this is fucking awesome.

Buying one. $100 was the price I was waiting for to jump on the Vita, AND I could play on my TV? So good.

I fucking wish Nintendo made a similar thing with the 3DS where we could play games on a TV using the Wii u gamepad.

I don't know if I want one BUT if I can stream my PS4 to another TV with almost no diminished effect then this will be very tempting.

You can also play 2 players with one on the TV and the other on Vita? That is very clever if true. It seems like the wife and kids will like this as it will also basically function as a Roku type device which plays PS1/PSP/PSV and Streams PS4 games.

I'm tempted to say the least.
