PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I hate being that guy who asks a question that's probably been clarified, but this thread is so big I don't feel like going through it all, but...

I'm not clear on this. Is Vita TV an add-on to people who already have a Vita, or can you buy it separately with a DS3/4 and start playing Vita games on your TV?

edit: beaten
Separately. You then use a DS3 or DS4 to play Vita games on your TV. So it's a cheap, less portable Vita, basically. Game support isn't 100% either which is a drawback, but as a bonus, if you have a PS4 it becomes a streaming box for PS4 games.

This is fucking nuts. Sony attacking media boxes with a fucking mini-console. They are firing on all cylinders right now.

I don't think roku is too concerned honestly. Outside of enthusiasts, I really wonder how well it will be marketed. I still have more questions about this device than answers, mainly with compatibility, storage, etc...

Also wonder if this would connect to PSN through say my PS3, to get plus for vita games, or will digital not work? Etc...

Probably been covered already but the thread is huge, does anyone think we'll see "PS Vita TV optimised" versions of games that rely too much on touch controls to work well currently? Redesigned versions that make more use of the buttons and utilise L2/R2 on the DS3/DS4?

It's a great way to boost the Vita install base and hopefully lead to more games being developed for it. My only worry is that it's going to be potentially confusing for consumers on what is compatible with PSVTV or not.

I assume all new vita games will be forced to have touch screen and back pad optional only. Older games would hardly be worth the cost to patch.

It supports bigger memory cards and I would think runs something along the lines of the vita OS with pad support, so I would think PSN access and downloads would be simple for digital and PS+ stuff. I hope.

The latter.

Though some games will have issues currently due to touchscreen stuff (no screen)

It's a separate device that lets you play Vita games on your TV, no need to already own a Vita :3

Thanks. You's good people.

This is intended to be used on your second tv which in most peoples cases will be a smaller set meaning no 1080p isnt really an issue.

Well for one thing, I don't want a Vita yet this appeals to me greatly.

I get to play games like Persona 4 Golden at a low entry cost to be played on the big screen. Throw in PlayStation plus and the PS4 streaming, and it's superb value.

Yeah, I guess there is a market for some people like yourself. But when I was in the market for a Vita, I would have never considered this. You are losing some of the functionality of the Vita and it still uses those awful memory cards.

With the 2ds, yes, that made perfect sense as a low cost entry. I'm not sure where the value is on this device...

It's not, because the PS3 can't stream PS4 games, which this can.

It is confusing I admit, but from what I can understand it:

- Plays a number of Vita games natively, using a Dualshock 3 (no touchpad) or Dualshock 4 when released (front touch similates touchpad, I'd assume), to control it.

- It can also stream PS4 games using Remote Play, and play them on another TV in another room, or a TV anywhere in the world with decent WiFi.

- This presumably means you can take this box round to a friend's and play games using your PS4 that's at home.

I think that's right. It's either a limited, cheaper Vita with HDMI out, or a cheap streaming PS4 box if you have the console already - depending on what you'd get the most use out of it for.

If this device is basically a media extender, I don't think this will work. Again, a lot of questions.

Holy hell this thing will be perfect for me!

I have 2 HD CRTs (both Sony XBR960s) that I've been looking to outfit with streaming devices and this is infinitely more appealing to me than a Roku.
Plus both TVs are 720p/1080i so no worries on the resolution for me. :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but with this device I'll be able to:
-use Netflix/Hulu/etc
-use Music Unlimited (I hope!?)
-play PSVita retail games
-play digital PS1/PSP/PSV games
-remote play PS4 games

for under ~$100?

Sign me the hell up!

My only concerns are that it still relies on the over-priced Vita memory cards and how the PSN account limitations will come into play (since it's currently limited to 2 devices for PSN purchases).

If remote play works as advertised, I don't see how this isn't a winner with PS4 owners. The idea of essentially having two consoles in the home is genius.

That's what I love about apple tv is if I'm watching something in the living room and want to go to the bedroom I can easily switch what I was watching to it.

The fact that it plays vita games and other apps is just gravy.

Sony should make a PS4 bundle with this device.

If this device is basically a media extender, I don't think this will work. Again, a lot of questions.

it is vita in a box... so remote play like a vita... so, yes, playing games off PS4 via internet is possible, but it wont play good unless you have good internet connection.

it could very well be called Playstation TV in USA and Europe, as thats basically what it is.

buying 3 :D

one for the living room one for the bed room and one for the office.

Cant beleive i will be able to play all my psn(vita) games and vita games and ps2 and psp games.

remote play ps4 to my office and bedroom is a nice plus

Big question is whether it supports 1080p output (important for PS4 remote play). If it upscales on the device? Even better.

Why didn't they just add a Vita game cart slot on the PS4? Would have made more sense. I'm interested to see how this works being that most Vita games utilize one, if not both, touchscreens. Right now I don't see Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, etc. working.

If this device is basically a media extender, I don't think this will work. Again, a lot of questions.
Yep, it depends how it works really. I'd assumed the remote play would work the same way as it does on PSP / Vita currently with PS3, which is that it can connect anywhere in the world that has a Wifi connection (although lag is an issue).

Why would you make a Vita only game now? To flip this argument around, let's pretend that instead of the Playstation Vita, Sony had made the Playstation 3 Portable and launched that in 2011. Would you suddenly say there's no reason to make PS3 games anymore? That's why I find this whole angle preposterous. The only thing that's going to kill Vita exclusive games is lack of Vita adoption in-and-of itself, and this is one way to hopefully alleviate that issue.

As for touchscreen support, as I said before, I wouldn't discount that completely. And as someone else pointed out, there's apparently already some level of touch support for DS3 controllers, so there might be stronger potential for touch support to begin with than it might first seem. And even then, I'd still wait until next year when PS4s are launched and DS4s are out in the wild world-wide to see if there's a stronger possibility for proper touch support after DS4 becomes the default controller. But this is admittedly total speculation on my part.

If Sony made the PS3 portable in 2011 then it would be the exact same platform as the PS3, why would there be less games made for PS3, I really don't know what point you are trying to make here.

Rubbish, there are plenty of Vita games that don't use, or have button replacements of, touchscreen controls.

Wipeout 2048 for example.

Wrong. Wipeout 2048 won't be compatible. Can you guess why? That's right, because it requires the touchscreen. For menus. This is something people just aren't getting. If a Vita game requires the touch screen for anything then it won't be compatible. Absolutely anything. Touch is required for menu navigation in wipeout, therefore won't be playable. Just like something like Super Monkey Vita. It may not use touch for the core gameplay, but the menu navigation touch requirement alone is enough to make it not playable.

Very few retail Vita games require no sort of touch interaction. The ones that don't are indies and games that are also available on PS3. If you want to play those games on your tv then buy a PS3 for a similar price point and also have access to loads of PS3 games.

The only way something like wipeout will be playable is if they take the effort to patch it so touch is no longer required. No third party is going to do that for any existing game and Sony won't do it for many of their games. For some it's impossible even if they wanted to, like Uncharted GA. About as many retail Vita games will be patched for use with Vita TV as PS3 games that were patched to be playable on Vita via remote play. Sony might decide to do it with a couple games just so they can say it's doable and have an extra selling point. But in reality that's all it will be. A couple of games. The rest of the library on Vita TV will be indies you can already play on PS3 and PS1 games you can already play on PS3. And PSP games, but in this day and age does anybody really give a shit about playing PSP games on a big screen? A small minority at best.

Remember a lot of indie/PSN titles were cross play PS3/PS Vita - this probably makes going to the Dualshock 3 control scheme a lot easier for those games.

Seems like a good product for gamers but it won't really appeal to the larger market.

For $100ish you can get a sleek looking box that allows you to:

- Play Vita games on your TV via a PS3/PS4 controller (I'm guessing PS4 touchpad and gyroscope support needs to be patched into Vita games).
- Access the Vita app store to buy PS1 games, decent indies and the usual apps (Netflix, Youtube, Twitch etc?).
- Bonus if you have a PS4 you can use it with remote play to allow the PS4 to be streamed to another TV in the household. I don't believe this works over the internet only via local Wifi/Ethernet.
- Prospect of Gaikai in a year or so time streaming PS3/PS4 titles straight from the web from where ever you take the device (as long as the internet connection is reasonable).

That isn't bad for the $100 price tag if you have multiple TVs that are used in a household and media streaming apps are your main use for the TVs. It also frees up the PS4 if you misses/family members want to watch something on Nextflix, now you can send them to the other room.

I think this is first and foremost directed to the Playstation users, there are a lot of them who don't own a Vita, this is a nice and really cheap way to play Vita games (like the free PS+ titles) and if the remote play will work as intended it will be a great device to have with your PS4.

I think I'm getting one of these. I kind of wish it came with a DS4 instead of a 3, but I can always use that one for Android emulation (since I was X360 this gen).

Because this works out at around £63 according to Eurogamer (will be more expensive with VAT added), the PS4 is £350, so its over 5 times more expensive.

So $409 instead of $399 for a PSVita card reader ?
No, thanks.
I'll buy a USB3 PSVita card reader if / when available.

Hard lesson from PS3.

Remember a lot of indie/PSN titles were cross play PS3/PS Vita - this probably makes going to the Dualshock 3 control scheme a lot easier for those games.
Definitely, for those. I was more referring to the retail Vita games that aren't compatible at the moment (Eurogamer says Gravity Rush isn't compatible, for example) - I wonder if we'll see Gravity Rush Remix for Vita TV or something?

Don't see this answered yet, but...

If you already have a vita... how do you use this?

Anyone with 2 vitas? I assume with ps+ you can cloud sync saves... digital games would work best unless you enjoy swapping vita carts between the vitatv and your vita.

This sounds cool. I wouldn't even consider a Vita before, was happy with my 3DS but this is something I think I want.

Because this works out at around £63 according to Eurogamer (will be more expensive with VAT added), the PS4 is £350, so its over 5 times more expensive.

Are there really going to be that many people that buy this and not a PS4 though? Also with it not working with some of the best Vita games out, and not supporting 1080p for PS4 play I'm not sure who they are going for here.

There's touch screen emulation support. That's enough for Wipeout.

Really curious how this does, the idea and price are simply excellent. Very unexpected.

It would have been worth it just for the PS1/PSP games at that price but to also have Vita, PS3/PS4 through remote play and Gakai and all the media functions is just nuts, could be wrong but really think Sony has a winner on their hands.

Touch controls shouldn't be too hard to simulate, like you could hold L2/R2 to access the front/back touch.
