PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Even a PSP can turn on a PS3 from a remote location... so that part shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure how viable or possible remote play between Vita/VitaTV and PS4 will be between two different locations though... or if you will truly need to be local to your PS4.

I don't think you need to be local.
In the trailer the girl plays Knack at school with her Vita. So I assume that VIta TV has the same remote play capability. Plus the fact that it can be plugged into a TV and that you can use your DS4. :). Can't believe it's only ~$100.

At first I thought this was stupid, but now I think it just might be incredible. I'm going to have to think about it, but I might have to pick one up. So cheap!

Remember earlier in the year, the rumors of disk-less $99 Xbox360 that was suppose to compete with AppleTV & Roku? Sony just beat MS to it.

This was a given back when House said that the VitaOS was coming to your living room.

AppleTV and MS have apps and music for sales though whereas this won't. In the stream they said they will be adding apps (no word on music), but it remains to be seen whether or not the amount of apps added will gain any type of ground.

No logical reason why I would need this. But fuck... I want it.

I'll buy one relatively shortly after my PS4. As it is I had to buy two PS3s to have one in the living room and one in the bedroom. This lets me do that same setup via remote play for only $100. Hard to beat.

We won't know until we see Sony's remote play features fully explained.

So? The Vita exists to let you play your games on the go or in asynchronous fashion with friends and family who are watching/playing something else on the TV.

Sony's bottom line here is to move software because moving software 1. makes them money on royalties and 2. makes their development partners coming back and keeps them involved.

The Vita format is far easier to work on than the PS3, so I'd argue the opposite of your hypothesis will also hold true, why make a PS3 exclusive now when Sony will gladly help you get it on Vita as well? It'll be free sales.

I really like this product for Sony. It's a solid play for the Japanese living room where big expensive consoles are becoming a thing of the past, complete with a nostalgia play on the Playstation brand and strong Japanese PS1 and PSP libraries of software.

It's a legitimate extender/second TV box for the PS4 in any more core gaming oriented household via Remote Play.

It strengthens the Vita's market appeal to developers and app publishers, likely leading to more Vita software and more television viewing apps. It can also serve as a "gateway" to the Vita's library, resulting in people who enjoy portables picking up a Vita to go with it.

It will move more PSV memory cards, allowing Sony to get more aggressive with card pricing thanks to economy of scale profit growth.

Lastly, it establishes their own foothold in the Ouya/Amazon Box/Apple TV/Roku segment, one with a unique set of differentiating features (strongest gaming box in the segment).

All that for a box that likely is at break even pricing or even possibly making a profit. They need to bring the dual shock 3 bundle pricing down aggressively over the next few years, and the same is obviously true for PSV memory card pricing, but if they do both they could have one hell of a Playstation brand Trojan horse on their hands.

Gaikai also becomes a legitimate industry-wide threat with this product as well, stepping up the move into a low cost streaming box future much sooner than many expected.

If this takes off I'd expect the Vita chipset to quickly find a home inside many Sony TVs and Blu-Ray players in the near future as well.

Well you make PS3 games because there are 80m of them out there. Not sure if you saw everything I said. I think this is a great idea, I think people are just going to think about making games for PS now and put it on all 3 if they can.

I really don't know how to feel about this. Seems like it was made to combat the Ouya, but won't it also halt Vita sells? This and a 64 GB Memory Card = the price of only a Vita.

It already has Music Unlimited for streaming, but yes, I'd imagine a big part of the success here will hinge on how well Sony gets media partners to support it with various apps.

The Vita needs at least comparable apps to the PS3 (CrunchyRoll, MLB.TV, HuluPlus, etc.).

  • Will support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device

Yesssssssssss. Insta-buy! Was going to use PS4 as my new Nasne device so I can finally stop running the very hot 20gb PS3 I've been using. Now with this and Nasne I won't have to fight the wife for use of the PS4 either.

Serious question: But what about my UMD PSP games? I have the PSP Component Out Cable, but will Sony ever take care of allowing me to have access to a cheap digital copies of my PSP titles I already physically own?

No, right?

No logical reason why I would need this. But fuck... I want it.

The way I read it, it seems to play some PSV (non touch required), PS1, PSP, and the ability to Stream PS4 games. If you can get Netflix or basically stream your PS4 to this in another room then you have yourself a killer Roku all in one solution for games and media. This has some potential and the barrier of entry is low for the base functionality. If this thing works like a plug in Vita for your TV then you automatically have Netflix support on top of general media playback on the thing from the get go. If you use remote play or direct connection to the PS4 then it opens up huge potential.

This is pretty awesome I can keep my Vita on firmware 1.8 for homebrew and use PSvita TV to play the latest games. Pretty awesome indeed.

So F*ck logic with Nintendo and Sony, portables consoles became home consoles and viceversa.

Why not do one console that can be Home & Portable whenever you want?

A portable WiiU/PS4, that you can connect it to the TV! It's not that hard...

Sony make most of its money from software sales not hardware. And after all it is a Vita.

Wait for the WiiU2/PS5

I don't get the hype here. Like at all. That being said, I already have a launch 3G vita and I think that might be why. Anyone else who already owns a vita underwhelmed?

Edit: Also, if you are impressed can you mention if you already own a Vita or not?

And it will connect to PlayStation 4 so that you can play Vita games through PS4, as well.

wonder how that works.
Remote play. Same way it'll work on the vita.

This is just a vita without a screen.

I'm buying one of these and another Vita (new revision as a secondary device). Sony stop taking me moneyyyy

Why? It only means more vita games coming soon.

I don't know how you can't be. Even if you aren't interested in any of the Vita components, it's a streaming box for PS4 games if you're planning on owning one.

For 499$ you get a PS4, and a remote play 'PS4' for the bed room or whatever.

Huh, this sorta came out of nowhere! for 99 bucks though, being able to stream PS4 games and play Vita / PSP / PS1 games sounds nice for me though, so I'll probably snag one.

You know you can pick up your PS4 and plug it into any HDMI in port right? This is a rather notable alternative for streaming PS4 to another TV or just having PS1/PSP/PSV function for your TV on top of the apps and such. If you can get Netflix and/or stream PS4 to it then it's your all in one media Roku like device.

They just eliminated the need for a ton of people to own the Vita...

They'll all own a Vita though ;)

They get into the low end console market (without selling it for a loss I'm sure off) and it should make the Vita install base much bigger. This could also be the Vita for a high end PS4 SKU. Hope the games already in the Vita store (which is pretty good) are enough to make sales good. It's a great idea for consumers who don't need a portable Vita, but want to play Vita games and a really good low end console. I doubt the PS3 will ever get below 100 with its custom HW.

I own a launch 3G vita and am happy that the platform is getting more exposure.

We should get better Apps as well - they already announced the Reader bookstore and we already have Skype etc.

I wonder if that USB port supports wired controllers like an arcade stick. Would be nice.
I'm getting one regardless and I already own a Vita.

I've owned a Vita since launch, and I like the idea quite a bit. I'm not going full bore on PS4, but the fact that you can Remote Play it to others rooms with this thing is a pretty damn good deal by itself. Tack on the PSP/PS1/Vita stuff, then tack on Gaikai in 2014? And it's 100$/uses DS3 & DS4?

It's real solid all around.

I'm impressed

I own a white Vita and I wouldn't give it up for anything

If I already had a vita I probably wouldn't be very interested in it. But since its only 100 dollars and I can play vita games I'm very excited. The only thing I could see that would be interesting to a vita owner would be the ability to stream your ps4 games to other tvs.

Not sure if we are on the same page, I just meant it be cool if I didn't have to switch video sources. Control the device from the ps4 gui, as opposed to the other way around.

I have a Vita 1.0 Not that excited about Vita 2.0. Totally excited about Vita TV!

Sure. Developers won't let the PS3 go because of the user base size. But the Vita is easy to work on and has more future growth potential, so it has it's own angles to appeal to developers.

It really is all about Sony pushing the Playstation family of software, not particular platforms, and using that to create content/price tiers that the industry is currently lacking.

Dragon's Crown is a good example with it's $50/$40 PS3/Vita release. I think we'll see more PS3/Vita cross platform titles that use lower MSRP to move more units. A $40 on both offering could do quite well for a publisher I think.

Then you have the indie/small studio tier that will be all digital, the 0-$15 MSRP titles. These will almost all be cross buy and cross play on all three platforms, effectively being the first step towards offering consumers the chance to build platform agnostic libraries. The combined PS3/PSV/PS4 user base will allow maximum sales for these titles, letting their lower price point work to their advantage.

The last tier is the $60 full MSRP PS4 games which will remain the exclusive domain of your major publishers.

The video game industry has needed to find a new way to construct different pricing tiers within it's software offerings for years now. This looks like the first real opportunity for that to not only have a chance to happen but actually be encourage to happen. The middle tier is where we're normally lacking, but a PS3/PSV two pronged offering could be an ideal way to achieve success there.

I guess I'm one of the few who don't care and don't own a Vita. I have plans to purchase a PSVita and get a 64 GB memory card with it.

haha, can you imagine the size, weight and price of that thing?

Coming from someone who was interested in some Vita games, but never particularly infatuated with the Vita itself, this is a pretty interesting move. Hopefully Sony will also take their heads out of their asses in terms of Vita Memory Card prices around the time this is ready for a western release as well.

It should be interesting to see where this goes. I personally don't really see the "AppleTV Killer!" accolades in this situation; last I checked, the Apple audience still has a tremendous headway over the gaming audience (the only audience that seemingly knows that the Vita even exists these days, judging from its sales) and AppleTV is something that complements an insular audience, and is not something that would be greatly affected by a Vita TV. With that said, this is still a step in the right direction if Sony is serious about this kind of focus (especially against other competitors like Ouya). The problem is that this may have the effect of providing a strong competitor to the Vita itself (less of an incentive for people to buy a Vita unless they like the portability, less of an incentive for developers to use Vita-exclusive features in lieu of having their game being able to work on both the Vita and Vita TV, etc).

Kinda sucks for Nintendo and the WiiU though, being caught between this and the PS4 with the myriad of other problems the system already has. Personally, at this point I think Nintendo would be better trying to solidify their hold on the handheld market lest the VitaTV does happen to blow up.
