PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Sony's been on a roll. It's like they actually get it. This is something that I'll actually buy (never even considered buying a vanilla PS Vita).

PS Vita TV takes the right lessons from Apple instead of just aiming for the low-hanging fruit (apples?) that most other big consumer tech companies do. Smart move, Sony.

i wish this sells wells and ends being a smart move to push vita software and sales.
Hopefully more apps will also come to the system, like browsers, media players, imbd etc to make it a nice device to have under your tv. PLease, make an android app to control it without the need of dedicated gaming controller.

Very cool. Good to see Sony doubling down on Vita. I think.

Color balance will be weird going from OLED to other screens, though. At least it is on the HDMI out ffrom dev kits.

The current list of games most probably are using the DS3 as a basis. Once DS4 comes out more games will be added thanks to the touch pad etc

Yeah just have to wait to see what happen with DS4. But i want it more of PS4 player anyway. The vita games would just be a bonus. Most likely just play the free PS+ vita games anyway.

I gotta figure stuff like this is why they had an English translation stream of the show. this stuff will come to the U.S. as well, it would be crazy for it not to, considering how many multi-TV homes we have.

This is me right now, I was going to get a Vita this weekend anyway and the Vita TV is quite cheap so I'll definitely get that too without much effort, PS4 will wait till next year because I still need to get a 3DS and Wii U (Black Friday).

i was thinking last night how great it would be to have hdmi out on VITA to do remote play on big screen when ever you are away and play with a Dual shock - and this is almost there - still need a Vita with HDMI out

Why PS Vita TV could be Sony’s smartest piece of hardware for years

For those who missed it, Sony recently announced PS Vita TV during a live-stream press conference in Japan. It was announced alongside a redesigned Vita, a Japanese release date for PS4, and a bunch of very Japanese looking PS4 games. And while PlayStation 4 is undoubtedly Sony's poster-boy for the next generation, it’s PS Vita TV that represents one of Sony’s smartest moves in years.

The device is clearly aimed as a rival to Apple TV, only Sony has added a couple of extra features that elevate Vita TV a little higher. There’s a slot on the device for Vita-compatible games and memory cards; allowing you to play Vita, PSP and PS One Classics games on any TV, using a DualShock 3 pad. You could even play against other PS Vita players via Ad Hoc multiplayer.

It also lets you access certain video services, and Hulu was the first partner Sony mentioned. Given how voraciously LoveFilm, NetFlix and Sky have spread onto mobile devices and multimedia boxes like Xbox 360 and PS3, it’s likely that some--if not all--will sign up for Vita TV if it becomes a success and moves to the US and Europe. The only caveat? Getting that all-important, stable broadband connection to make it all work.

All that is very cool. Essentially, you’ve got a device that can stream media and play portable games wherever you are in the world. However, what’s most interesting--and the reason it’s such a clever device--is that Vita TV allows remote play from your PS4. Think about that for a second. Although remote play is currently limited to local use (so, as a second screen within your home), Sony is looking into cloud-based streaming for PlayStation games. With this little white box, no more than the size of a mobile phone, you could eventually play PS4 anywhere in the world. You could take it round to your friend’s house and plunder the Caribbean silly in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, even though he doesn’t have a PS4. Can you think of a better viral marketing campaign for PS4 than allowing people to stream their games while they're visiting friends? If so, I image Sony will want to give you a job.

It’s another, more user-friendly, step ahead of Microsoft when it comes to sharing. While Xbox One has tied itself in knots with DRM and limited profile-sharing, Sony is now offering a device that lets you take your PS4 profile anywhere, and lets you share your Vita (and potentially PS3 and PS4) games with anyone. That’s a big, big deal.

PS Vita TV really opens up the possibility for what Sony can achieve through its network of multimedia devices and partners. It’s a device that not only boosts the appeal of PS Vita, and brings the portable closer together with PS4; it also makes your PlayStation games and subscriptions (like PS Plus--you could use Vita TV to play free PS+ Vita games, without owning a Vita) more valuable. PS Vita games become even more essential travel companions and, crucially, the Vita brand gets even more attractive to big developers again. Which means more delicious games.

It’s smart tech, and a real statement of intent from Sony that you will always be connected with your PlayStation experiences wherever, whenever. It’s a big step into the next-generation. However, it’s the price that really impresses. While Sony has been criticised in the past for making its tech too expensive, PS Vita TV weighs in at 9,480 Yen--just under £65 / $95. That’s circling the edge of ‘impulse buy’ territory--something Vita and PSP never really achieved. Looks like the days of giant enemy crabs and Riiiidge Racer are truly behind us. Thankfully…

but the ps4 controller won't even work on the vtv day one. it's getting patched in later on.

Ok i didn't know that either.I guess it makes sense then.Hopefully it will be compatible with Vtv somewhere around mid-end 2014 when i'll be getting a PS4.

Interesting.

What does this device do for current Vita owners - anything ?

We have already been told we can remote play PS4 titles.

From what I have read it doesnt give us the ability to connect our mobile vita to a TV.

Most Vita exclusive titles use touch screen so I cant play those on TV using it.

I guess its targeted at non vita owners, non exclusives, or exclusives that dont use touch screen ?

This is such a GREAT idea...it beats a jillion different things to the punch, or trumps them at things they do for cheaper than they do it for.

It's like Apple TV...except it has an instant library of not only real games from the PS1/PS2/PSP/PSV family, but also all of the indie games and PS minis that have versions or cross-compatibility with the PSP/PSV. On top of that, it can also remote play PS4 games?

And it does all of this as a tiny-set top box for $100? Even if it's a back-burner product for Sony, it's a pretty sweet deal for people that buy into it if it works as described.

Console-quality games on TV using an already-standard wireless controller interface, with access to cheap or free games that you already have or can easily acquire, and access to the new style of mobile cheap/free games that are available on whatever device you like to play games on. Not a bad look.

You can play vita titles on the TV, you can choose to use the vita as the controller if you want as well.

I already own a psvita, and have a ps4 preordered, but may indeed still buy this. Why? For netflix and such in the guest room, as well as games for people staying over, or even I feel like vita gaming on the big screen.

For $99, well, it's a steal. Now to get another memeory card on sale, or just reuse my 8 gig till then. Choices.

is there a list of upcoming vita games?

the ones that are already out I don't care for or have already played them on a friends Vita

I expect Sony to do the following

- Vita 2.0 different colors and cheaper price leads to more wider appeal. This Vita will replace the original OLED Vita which will be discontinued.

- Vita TV, basically a extremely cheap price entry, for people who want to play Vita/PSP games on the TV, or stream PS4 on another TV or even want to have a cheap media box on TV or just want a cheap console with some cool Vita and Indie games.

Now my prediction

- Vita XL, this would be revealed at TGS 2014. Will have a bigger price entry than the above systems. It would basically be a bigger Vita with full analogs and L2 and R2 for optimal remote play. It will also have a 6 inch screen as well as longer battery life. Finally it will also have a HDMI out. It can also be used as a DS4 controller for PS4. This will not replace any of the systems above.

Dude?

There is even a slot for your Vita memory card so that you can play Vita on TV

Remote PS4 is however the very best thing about this, absolutely awesome

I hope they patch it later so that you it sends the Vita signal to the TV, those touch and camera based games will not be a problem anymore at least in one way.

I will buy this 100% only for the PS4 remote play feature.... absolutely AMAZING.

Now, if they allow you to remote-play on ANY network I will be blown away. Play my PS4 from a hotel room in a different country when I'm away on business.. YES PLEASE!

Now all they have left to do is to add support for local multiplayer for Vita games up to 4 players (with DS3 or DS4 controllers) with only one VitaTV.. then the floodgates for local multiplayer indie games will be open. Handheld Vita will have option to use adhoc and VitaTV will be fine with just one screen and 2-4 controllers.

what....

that's surprising and... probably a really great idea?

Sony better announce a NA date. They should have announced one yesterday. Advertise the fuck out of this. This little device is crazy awesome and completely impulse buy only costing 100 dollars.

top of my head
- kids are using the TV downstairs
- I was playing a game and want to carry on upstairs
- watching a movie on netflix on the PS4 downstairs and I want to finish watching in bed

off topic, but man i swear i have about 6 devices in my bedroom that can put out netflix XD

Pretty much only my kindle can't output netflix lol.

I guess i get the convenience aspect, but 720p stream + control latency...

I paid $60 for this game, I want to play it at 100% with zero compromises, but that's my pc gamer mentality probably.

So unless you want to play games on the go you no longer need to buy a Vita right?
Well, as of now not every game in the Vita library is compatible with Vita TV.

But basically this is Sony admitting they were going nowhere with the handheld business.

Can you PSN account be tied to multiple Vita's this will essentially be my third Vita so I wanna make sure it works right.

So you can tie your account to two Vitas? That would be my upcoming situation when I buy this.

Anyone know if wireless headsets, like the one Playstation makes, will work with the Vita TV? I assume so since it has a USB output.

This kind of invalidates the need for that since HDMI out would still lock you into using your Vita as the controller so you would need to sit a little closer as opposed to this which uses a dedicated and small box with wireless DS3/DS4 support.

I already answered in the other post but this invalidates even needing the Vita with HDMI out. This is the Vita with HDMI out right here and it supports pads. You can use the TV as player 1 and the Vita as player 2 now. So this essentially gives you local multiplayer with Vita/VitaTV working as separate units.

This does a lot for me and I will be getting a PS4 day 1 and got a First Edition Vita last year.

For those who've never wanted to buy a PSP/PSV or any portable device, this will serve as a bridge that will let you enjoy those games and PS4 remote play alongside all the media functions. It;s a very attractive proposition and I already have a Vita and will own a PS4 soon.

If you want to share your Vita library with the family without lending a Vita this can be good. Also if you want to play on he TV. Finally if you have an extra room which needs a media box this an be used. And of course if you have a extra room and you want to stream PS4 in that rooms TV. Of course for me personally this isn't useful, I don't care to play Vita games on the TV and I don't need PS4 access or another media box in another room. I hope it takes off simply because I want more Vita games support.

Nothing to do with being a PC gamer. I'm more hyped for this than new GPUs lol
