PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

If Gaikai comes even close to panning out, this will be an interesting option for people with fast broadband who do not usually spend a ton on electronics. But if there is nothing about the device that is emulating Vita's touch controls... why not just emulate the Vita games in PS4?

Vita is officially a remote play device now, right? I don't see much point in making Vita exclusive software any more.

?

You don't remote play Vita software. The more hardware is out there Vita 1.0, Vita 2.0, and Vita TV .. the more of an audience you have to sell your software. End result is more software being produced.

The only issue this has so far is the memory. 32Gb will not be enough and who would pay the same price as the VitaTV for 64GB? Sony really needs to figure it out in their memory cards prices. Needs to be cut in half, 50$ for 64GB.

Edit: Also this doesn't have internal memory? *Facepalm* Come on Sony, when will you learn.

I think their will be more Vita support simply becauseof Vita 2.0 redesign aimed at a wider market as well as this cheap box. Their are people out their especially in Japan that won't buy a PS4. Between Vita 2.0 and Vita TV we can potentially get a big Via push.

Imagine a $500 bundle with PS4, VitaTV, and a 1 year PS+ membership.

A years worth of game rentals, PS4 on two TVs, etc.

Imagine that on a shelf next to an Xbox One for the same price.

This isn't meant to be some fanboy bullshit. I have no current plans for either console and I'm way more heavily invested in the 360 than the PS3, but holy shit that's attractive. Even just buying a PS4 and VitaTV separately for $500 is a pretty great package assuming that streaming works well.

I have absolutely no need for one of these. We only have one TV (a big 55" LED), my PS3 and PS4 will be hooked up to it, and I already have a Vita.

But I absolutely one one of these. Right now.

Dude?

There is even a slot for your Vita memory card so that you can play Vita on TV

Remote PS4 is however the very best thing about this, absolutely awesome

When I upgrade from this 16 gb card to a 64 giger I'm sticking it in there and stuffing it with my ps1 games and vita games I play more at home, etc. Which also reminds me I have to read up on how activations and multiple memory cards work on vita again.

This is awesome!! I honestly thought Microsoft (remember 360 settop box rumors lol..I thought it would be perfect for One streaming if the rumor was true) or Nintendo would be the first to implement this idea in someway. Sony just peaked my interest! I love stuff like this.

One thing I'm not sure was talked about, though, was the hacking "community". Once this thing is released, new life will be breathed into the home brew community because of the price...which is worrisome. It's just a theory of mine, but people all around the Internet love these 100 dollar settop boxes and are always trying to hack them to get stuff like XBMC on there. Now that part sounds nice, but everything else that comes with home brew doesn't..

Just a random thought..hopefully it won't be an issue!

Anyway this is the missing link for me. Before I wasn't even going to buy a PS4 till sometime next fall or summer, but I'm heavily considering pushing that up because I love the idea of this thing and the ecosystem that comes with it. Good job Sony.

Now all they have left to do is to add support for local multiplayer for Vita games up to 4 players (with DS3 or DS4 controllers) with only one VitaTV.. then the floodgates for local multiplayer indie games will be open. Handheld Vita will have option to use adhoc and VitaTV will be fine with just one screen and 2-4 controllers.

I could be wrong but it currently supports 2 players with one on TV and the other on Vita. Maybe if you have 3 VitaTV's and a portable Vita it would work?

You plug you VTV in, you turn it on, go into remote play and play your PS4 games.

No need for two.

Well if you plan on plugging your Vita TV into the main TV where I presume your PS4 would be plugged into then yes you would need two. Another for the TV the PS4 is not plugged into. Sony should just release another tiny radio model that just does remote play for like $30 and sell those for people to plug into every TV.

Anyways I hope they provide button mapping for the games that use touch for single button activities like running and melee attacks. Let me assign front touch screen press to the triggers. Since apparently the stick buttons are being taken up by the pointer functionality no L3 running :(

Unlike the PS4, this is something small enough to fit into your coat pocket. The inconvenience of shuffling it around isn't the same.

Yup, this is a brilliant move, hope it'll be popular with the masses. Really seems like a move nintendo should have made to secure a place on the market, but I guess sony was in the best position for it.

Day fuckin' one. Day fuckin' one man. This answers all of my problems with portable systems: screen to small, and the controls are very uncomfortable to me. No more of fighting through JPCSP's ridiculous configurations, hoping the next update doesn't break the current game that you are playing, just to play a game on a bigger screen with a better controller. DAY FUCKING ONE!

i like this thing less and less. the revised vita should have come with this device at $200.

-introduces an inexpensive console to the market.
-every game would have been possible with the machine.
-no messiness with the new model also coming out around the same time (which is more expensive)

i think sony could have delivered everything, and they just cut the product in half. it's a good idea, but not as strong as it should be.

Because with this you have access to a library of over 1300 titles at a third of the cost of the PS4.
Yeah but you could apply the same logic to PS2 and PS3. PS3's without EE/GS didn't emulate PS2 games until Sony decided they wanted to sell downloadable versions. Why not skip to that part for people who just want one device connected to their TV?

VITA TV is definitely awesome at the price as a set top box with games that are actually good, but there is really nothing going on input wise now that should prevent people from being able to play Vita games on their PS4.

I think the main market for this device, if it ever takes off, won't be vita owners or ps4 owners. It will be casual gamers or kid gamers.

Remember, this isn't an accessory. This is a dedicated playstation home console for $100.

Thats not requiring two to do remote play though is it. Thats two if you want two.

It really seems like it's for the west. So of course it's launching in Japan first.

I'm somewhat skeptical largely because of the total failure that has followed previous Sony attempts at using Playstation to compete with Apple (does this thing have an IR port? It better be universal remote compatible if it wants to be a serious media box), but the pricing this time is decent and the PS4 Remote Play does potentially make it make sense for a bedroom purchase, even if the Vita aspect never gets used.

I don't think it's an obvious preordained success, but it also doesn't have the PSPGo's obvious doomed-from-the-start aura.

It supports HDMI-CEC, which is better than having its own IR port.

Sec guys I want 2 Vita's for the same price as the new revised one

Wow. This is either Sony's best idea in years, or its worst. Either way, it's its craziest. Like a fox.

Let's face it - this thing, if you already have a PS3 & PS+ but no Vita like me, is a total no-brainer purchase. if it comes out in the UK this year, or for £70 (lol it'll be £100 I know), or both, then Wii U is completely boned. Hell, it might cause a few headaches for Microsoft as well.

Absolutely inspired. Looks sweet as, too.

So i use my Vita to play the Vita TV then i can play games that are touch screen heavy or is that still out? what about the touchpad on the PS4? I know theres no rear pad, but what the hell uses that one.
