PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I love this device. This does blur the lines between console and handheld games in an interesting way though.

Those who like gaming on the go still have it, but those who want the console experience can have it too. This is the best situation IMO, but it kinda questions whether games should be designed specifically to be played on a handheld anymore. Vita games especially, with their visuals and production already felt like console games. I guess they can be both now, since handhelds have advanced so much.

Not everyone wants a portable. If this takes off then software interest for the Vita ecosystem gets a bump, everybody benefits. Well, except for touchscreen game controlling lovers.

Very nice surprise, great alternative for those considering an OUYA, AppleTV etc. Plenty of games which will look good on the big screen.

I am hoping they have settings and the normal filters etc... I tried playing Disidea with the AV cables on PSP and it wasn't very good.

Since they said in the OP that its basically running the Vita OS, I'd imagine that these options would still be available.

I don't think I want to play sub 544p games on a 1080p display. And the media capabilities aren't interesting. PS4 streaming is nice but I plan to do that with a VITA instead of this.

i am sure some people interested in a few games only available on vita but not willing to spend 200€ on the system may bite if this is below 100€ and can use their ps3/ps4 controllers so no need to spend extra money, just buy game card, 1GB internal storage for save games (or just upload to the cloud if PSN+ member) and done. Seems pretty interesting for a number of people.

Or even for some interested on old psp games that never owned a psp

So in theory I could plug a Vita TV into a Xbox One via HDMI in and remote play a Playstation 4?

Think the memory card is a sticking point though

But if you can stream games via gaikai that could offset the need for a memory card from the casuals perspective

If Gaikai and IPTV work well and offer a good amount of content this could be big

Have my doubts though

Good news! Just today they announced a device for you. It's called a PS Vita TV.

Exactly my point. This device is great for someone like me who'd like to play some Vita games, but doesn't do much portable gaming and thus would never buy a Vita.

The only thing I am unsure of is the 720p output, I would most likely get one if it was capable of 1080p. I really like the idea of streaming from the PS4.

I'm all in for one (or two). I was close to buying a Vita quite a few times, but I never ended up pulling the trigger.

I wonder if it's region free (since it depends on your PSN I'm guessing)...

I don't get the level of excitement for this thing. I understand it has at least one neat thing in being a PS4 sling box, but everything else it does seems weird. If you have a PS4 you don't really need it as a media streamer. I mean do people in this thread really even need a media streamer at all, don't you have a ton of them by now? A TV based PS Vita doesn't sound exciting at all, that's basically just like having a low powered system that has a very mediocre game library. I thought the most interesting thing about the Vita as of late was that it was becoming an mobile indie platform which lead credence to it's viability and its potential playfulness with the PS4, but as a stand alone console it has to rely on exclusives to be interesting unless you do not have a PS3 or have no interest in getting a PS4. The whole thing seems weird, it has a lot of cool things for it's price point, but at the same time it's value is eaten up by owning the very things it does cool stuff with. It seems like a walking redundancy.

I get your point but to call the Vita's library mediocre is a slap in the face.

This creates ultimate convenience and accessibility for me and my family. I can now have a Roku like box which can play PS1/PSP/PSV games on my TV alongside PS4 streaming to a separate room.

It's not redundant even for those of us who will have a PSV/PS4. It's an even bigger Godsend for those who don't want to play a portable but want to enjoy some of the games. And it's on 100 dollars. You may find all that redundant but that does not discredit what this device brings to the table. This should help the Vita's ecosystem and expand the userbase even more without selling the traditional hand held Vita.

This is am awesome bit of kit for $100. Able to play PSX/PSP/Vita games AND have the ability to stream PS4 games to another TV is simply amazing for the price. Well done Sony!

I hope the OUYA can be finally extinct. Good riddance to that POS.

Not everyone needs/wants that though.

I never game outside the house, and don't like gaming on small screens much (why bother when I can game on my big screen?).

That's the convenience of choice this gives you. You want to play your portable Vita then go ahead. You want to spend around 100 for a TV enable Vita then you can as well. You can mix things around and really take advantage of the cross talk between these platforms as well since Sony is really doing a lot to distinguish its services offered vs the competition (such as MSFT and Nintendo).

Well the guy you were responding to was talking about why someone might still want a Vita with a Vita TV existing. He wasn't dismissing the notion that people don't want a portable device.

What's to understand exactly? A $100 PS4 extender that also plays a lot of Vita games and runs Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, etc on your TV?

I think it has a ton of uses but this might get confusing to the PS4 buyer in the store who's about to drop $399, maybe why Sony decided to hold it back a few months in the West.

The best situation was PSP Go. It was both of these things in one.

Unfortunately, market reaction and Sony's handling of the launch did not make for an easy sell. PSP Go was the best thing Sony's failed at and I wish VIta was more like it.

So am I right to assume you need a vita for this to work or not?

This is a standalone home console.

Keep in mind that it does accept physical Vita retail cards.

Granted, you will need a memory card for ps1 and psp games.

Will there be a package without the controller for us that already own a ps vita? Would be great to play Uncharted again on my 60" tv.

psp is 16:9.
Yeah, the PSP and Vita's resolutions are uh, how do you say... Are in ratios that work well to upscale to 1080p/720p/544p/272p.

Why it doesn't support 1080p is beyond me, but the more I think about, the more I'm willing to bet the general public won't really care about 720p video.
