PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Wow. This is either Sony's best idea in years, or its worst. Either way, it's its craziest. Like a fox.

Let's face it - this thing, if you already have a PS3 & PS+ but no Vita like me, is a total no-brainer purchase. if it comes out in the UK this year, or for £70 (lol it'll be £100 I know), or both, then Wii U is completely boned. Hell, it might cause a few headaches for Microsoft as well.

Absolutely inspired. Looks sweet as, too.

Expect the pricing to be this:

Base Pack: $95/€95/£79.99

Value Pack: $150/€150/£125

With a release date of March 2014.

I also expect Killzone Mercenaries to be packed in with this thing sometime in Fall 2014.

Although the announcement of this makes me wonder if a VITAPhone (Xperia Play 2) is still on the cards.

Yeah, because they removed the screen. I'm going to assume that everything else is the exact damn same.

It is a silly thing to ask for.

not sure what you're trying to say here. the system could have had everything playable at home or on the go. instead you now have to choose between two devices. it's a dumb way to weaken the brand. they could have had a $50 vita tv as an extra thing if you already had a vita too.

I just realised, people who buy a PS4 will likely have a PSN+ account. All the free Vita/PSP/PS1 games they keep getting from Plus could tempt them to jump in on Vita for $100. The addition of streaming PS4 and Media features on a second TV is another bonus. This device is perfect for PS4 only owners or even PS4/Vita owners who just want to stream PS4 on another TV and make use of their Vita library on a TV.

This is me. Can't say I like the name if they're trying to make an Ouya-like box.

Except...you know...the portability of the portable.

This is a win win for me and Sony. I already own tons of content and a Vita but the use of this device will not only add the functions of a portable streaming box to my living room (my gaming hub is in another room) but it will enable the games my kids like to play on Vita to be able to be played on TV. My wife will love this as well since she plays a ton of P4G. I'm pretty excited at the convenience this creates for me.

That doesn't come with a controller and features expensive, proprietary memory. I don't see it. It's an add-on.

An add on to what? You don't need a Vita, a ps3, or a ps4 for this to work. It's fully functional on it's own. The Vita game compatibility issue will be solved when DS4 is patched in.

Yeah, you need a controller, so I guess the price is really $150.

Always wanted to play P4 Golden on the TV instead of a handheld. Persona 4 is just more immersive that way.

And it should look nice. I think it has a higher res than the PS2 version. I played the Ps2 version on my big HDTV with component cables and I thought it looked fine, so this is very appealing.

It doesn't weaken the brand. It sells the platform to folks who had no interest in portables, but may want the ability to play games and watch streaming stuff. For $99.

Every last Vita TV owner is also a vita userbase member, which will attract more devs to the platform if the vita TV is a hit.

It's got USB support. Hell, you could use goddamn PS2 controller on it with an adapter.

Import all the physical Japanese titles you want. They work perfectly regardless of region or account.

It's online accounts (digital titles) that are limited to one per memory card. Just have a US account.

Sweet! Time to start buying up heavily discounted Vita games!

I wonder how good something like MK or UMVSC3 will look on a TV compared to the console versions?..

So SONY basically killed off any reason to bother buying a VITA

Hell ill prolly sell mine now and just use this.

I am at least 115% certain there are still gamers who prefer handhelds to what vita tv is, who likes to play games outside of their house , etc. I'm literally only interested in vita tv as :

1) A way to play ps4 on a different tv in my house/ at a friends house without bringing the whole system

2) Extra storage location for vita/ps1/ psp games I'm likely to only play at home.

I could see people getting mad if they are relatively new Vita owners. But since the thing doesn't play all games because of the lack of touchscreens I can see where Sony is going with this.

This thing definitely isn't aimed at people who want a portable.

Looked kinda like devils dice but I'm not sure.

I think it's a PS1 game. PS1 games with local multiplayer should work I think (in another video they play Tekken) but not sure PSP games will. Probably adhoc with Vita Portables, though.

As was already said earlier in the thread, it's Devil Dice

Thanks for this.

Should have known... Was being hopeful for local PSP multiplayer... Ah well, ad-hoc is just as good though!

Yeah this is a no brainer purchase for $100. Im still in shock

EDIT: Killzone Mercs just became a super super killer app

You'd be surprised how good PSP games looked via component out and most of these Vita games are higher resolution than PSP titles. You should be happy since you get to play games like this on your TV now.

It would be great if Sony can get competent GTA III/IV collection compilation onto this thing. Also a decent COD would do wonders for this thing.

Also LBP VITA needs to be patched to support LBP VITA TV lol.

Wait, I could use this quiet nicely in a number of situations...

DO WANT!

I'm really surprised to see all the positive reactions for this thing. This is definitely one unexpected way to revise interest in the VITA platform.

I was interested in this for Gravity Rush, but then I looked at that compatibility list and even with a DS4 patch, still no GR since the DS4 can only emulate the touch screen and not the backtouchpad. =(

It could easily emulate the backtouch, e.g. R2+touchscreen=backtouch.
Could be clunky, but at least it is a workaround. For pinching (front and back at the same time), there is still L2 left.

But to be honest, I already wondered why they didn't include a backtouch on the DS4 at the February reveal. They were so positive about it at the Vita reveal and it actually is more natural than the fronttouch. Knowing about the Vita TV, it would have been a good idea.
I don't think a touchpad can be that expensive.

No such thing as a mad Vita owner.

VITA4EVA...

I can't tell if this entire post is sarcastic or sincere anymore.

I don't think I want to play sub 544p games on a 1080p display. And the media capabilities aren't interesting. PS4 streaming is nice but I plan to do that with a VITA instead of this.

OMG --- this is SO for me.

I will be able to play Vita and PSP games on my TV. I don't give a single fuck about portability, I play my handhelds at home and buy them only for their unique games.

DAY FUCKING ONE. This better come out in America.

How's the PSP support? Is it bullshit like when you plug the PSP in a TV?

This is a vita

Makes me laugh when I read his statement. This is going to expand Vita and bring more people in. It may not set the world on fire but you have to give Sony and Kaz a ton of credit because the Vita is a floundering fish with a ton of great games. This should really appeal and increase the viability of the ecosystem.

It should work with anything you bought on PSN.

Just imagine if this supports USB storage. I don't want to get my hopes up for that though. This is already pretty cool.

As an early Vita owner, this thing is awesome. I won't buy it but hopefully it leads to more games being made. It could be an OnLive stream box, too. Amazing.

I do appreciate my Vita. I really like having a handheld. Of course, I rarely use it outside of home. But I still like it. It makes gaming feel more immersive.

yeah the strength lies in having some vita games for your tv + the psp backlog. can't say i'm not interested in that in addition to a handheld i do want, but i might start looking for a cheap used vita instead of a brand new one. not spending close to $200 for the handheld anymore.

I am hoping they have settings and the normal filters etc... I tried playing Disidea with the AV cables on PSP and it wasn't very good.

PSP games are upscaled and look awesome on the Vita.

No reason to suggest the TV won't be the same.

I'm thinking about one possibility...

Since you can share your PSN account on two PS3s and you can play in the same moment same downloaded game (or disc) from same account, multiplayer for example, and you can join one or other player...

Would it be possibility with PS Vita and VitaTV? Like, if i own PSN version of Soul Sacrifice, would I be able to play the same copy in ad hoc mode ofc cooperative mode?

That would be really nice, but in other hand, it would be bad if Sony makes us (vita, ps3, soon ps4 owners) to make ANOTHER account so we can play our own games in MP...

It's kind of a local multiplayer, but vita is not supporting it natively, so this would be a solution in my opinion.

I'd buy this for $99.99 USD easily. Put it in my room while the PS4 is in the living room? And play the PS4 on both those TVS? Yes please!

I think devs are going to drop all touch functionality from now on (not a bad thing I have to say) so their games are compatible for both pieces of hardware.

Is there a list of compatible games because the only one I can think of that doesn't have essential touch functions is P4G from what I've played.

I'm really surprised to see all the positive reactions for this thing. This is definitely one unexpected way to revise interest in the VITA platform.

Well, it's a good solution to the vita problem for one. But it also lends itself to interesting usage. It's cheap, it can be hooked up easily to any monitor or screen, and it's small enough to carry around. It's basically the perfect "bring it to work and no one will notice" device, lol.

Also, this will make it easier to stream vita games. =o

If the PSP and PS1 support is good for this when outputting to a TV, that make it absolutely perfect.

For those games that require the trackpad, couldn't the PS4's controller have that functionality for the front pad?

Otherwise, I wonder how games like Golden Abyss, where at one point you need to use actual light on the PSV's camera, will work on the Vita TV?

Regardless, I don't care. I was tempted to pick up the Vita again for remote PS4 play, but I want this instead.

here's a fun hypothetical.

you have no psp/vita/ps3/ps4. you ain't no pony sony.

You got $200 to spend, would you get a vita tv value pack and a vita game, or ps3 base model?

Expect the pricing to be this:

Base Pack: $95/€95/£79.99

Value Pack: $150/€150/£125

Although the announcement of this makes me wonder if a VITAPhone (Xperia Play 2) is still on the cards.

I agree but there won't be an M rated pack in, most likely it will be 30 or 90 days PS+ like the Japanese value pack.

This is exactly what I think. I'm really excited about this! :D

Wish they could just include all this built in to the new Vita model.

But this:

You can stream PS4 games through PS Vita TV on a tv in another room (!!)
*additional info from TSA*

Means I'm 100% gonna buy at least one of these. It never crossed my mind before, didn't know this would be something I'd want but damn I do. Can finally play all those Vita games and PSP games I've yet to play.

I don't get the level of excitement for this thing. I understand it has at least one neat thing in being a PS4 sling box, but everything else it does seems weird. If you have a PS4 you don't really need it as a media streamer. I mean do people in this thread really even need a media streamer at all, don't you have a ton of them by now? A TV based PS Vita doesn't sound exciting at all, that's basically just like having a low powered system that has a very mediocre game library. I thought the most interesting thing about the Vita as of late was that it was becoming an mobile indie platform which lead credence to it's viability and its potential playfulness with the PS4, but as a stand alone console it has to rely on exclusives to be interesting unless you do not have a PS3 or have no interest in getting a PS4. The whole thing seems weird, it has a lot of cool things for it's price point, but at the same time it's value is eaten up by owning the very things it does cool stuff with. It seems like a walking redundancy.

I already have Vita and I prefer to play my games on portable, but I'm tempted for the possibility of playing ps4 games on my work desk with pc monitor...

also, I hope the portable Vita will also get Dualshock support via firmware.

This thing's brilliant. To a PSN/PS+ subscriber like myself who's managed to acquire a library of over a hundred PSX, PSP and Vita games on my PSN account over the years (ya, I was a rabid PSPgo supporter/user), this is an absolute no-brainer for $100... and who doesn't have an extra DS3 (or two) lying around? Add the Netflix compatibility and other extended functionality and it's just too good to ignore. Well done Sony.

Except...you know...the portability of the portable.

Not everyone needs/wants that though.

I never game outside the house, and don't like gaming on small screens much (why bother when I can game on my big screen?).

here's a fun hypothetical.

you have no psp/vita/ps3/ps4. you ain't no pony sony.

You got $200 to spend, would you get a vita tv value pack and a vita game, or ps3 base model?

I don't know, but if it is finally the thing that opens up a huge library to some of my holdout friends (just in time for TitS 2), it is already worth it.

Well there's really no reason to develop games on the Vita now if you can just play them on TV anyways IMO.

But this basically bridges the gap between those who want to play these portable games but on their TV. These are still natively designed Vita games. There's not magic happening. It's a Vita with a small and sleek chassis that supports TV out but has no screen. And it's 100 dollars.

Why make any PC indie then since it will come to Vita or vice versa. You see what I'm trying to say? Legend of Heroes TiTS can now be enjoyed on your PSP/PSV and have the PSV TV since this is all interconnected through your PSN account. I imagine there will be ways to transfer saves (hopefully wireless) so you can play on your Vita away and on the PSVTV at your house.
