I dunno. I guess he's an exception because it's his year and all, but he's such a mainstay Mario character now that it feels odd he's unlockable while every other Mario character isn't. Melee moved some previously unlockable characters to starting positions so it isn't unheard of.

I can see him moving up to starter. Either way, he's always one of the first characters you unlock so it doesn't make much difference.

They gotta keep a good amount of them hidden though, at least a third probably. If we have say, 14 or 15 months to go, they should reveal probably around 1-2 a month.

Luigi always feel like an unlockable character. He was basically an alternative moveset for Mario. Same thing with clones in general. It makes sense in a game design point of view.
 
To all those saying Snake should be cut: poo poo on you. You would be passing up the opportunity to have this in the soundtrack. Why would you do that?

Any soundtrack that could have both that and this in it would be a serious contender for SotYAY

I dont believe they know what will be shown, but I do believe there will be a ND this week since TGS is next week. Nintendo needs to get there news out now since they wont be at TGS.

Being that this is next ND will be the fall conf. I can see 3 or 4 new characters shown

I guess so. Just odd to have such an important character unlockable is all. Early reveal though makes me wonder if they're willing to move him up though, but I guess we won't find out until the game comes out.

Make him extremely difficult to unlock too. Something like, after collecting all trophies and stickers, playing over 10000 matches, and having over 500 hours played, Mario will come to challenge you, one chance only. If you fail, you will never unlock him.

Yeah, that'll work.

(The only characters I see switching starting and unlockable places are Ness and Lucas)

Holy shit I didn't know Dave Hester was in Metal Gear Rising. Now I want it to appear on Wii U so Smash Bros. can have Dave Hester.

I could possibly see us getting another major trailer before the end of the year, if only as a way for Nintendo to keep some level of hype going for the Wii U while it flounder among the faithful, but I doubt it'd be Wonder Red. He only has one game, it's bombed horribly and he'd be another multiple-characters type of fighter they'd have to work out on the 3DS.
 
i realisticly feel something like this will be our character list based on my opinion. i think we will have 26-28 characters since they did say the character list probably wont be as big.

the already 14 announced (im counting zero suit samus as samus.) plus

Pkmn trainer
Peach
Wonder Red
mewtwo/mega mewtwo
Marth
zelda/shiek
Toon Ganandorf? maybe (he has a figure coming and wwhd character)
character from earthbound.
Meta knight
Sonic (i know 3rd party support is low this time but sonic games coming to wii u and 3ds exclusivity for a few games)
Wario
Yoshi
Ice climbers
Captain Falcon (staple for the franchise)

total 28 characters!
 
28 characters would be disappointing, what is that 3 more than melee?
Brawl had 35, I have to expect 40, or at least 35. I don't see there being a decrease in characters.

Didn't Sakurai say the number of characters would be about the same as Brawl, just different characters?
 
Didn't he say they started development by porting stuff over from Brawl? I expect more than the Brawl roster just based on that. Obviously they will touch up the models/textures/animation but it's less work anyway.
 
I would say don't expect Sakurai to add as many characters as he did in Brawl. We'll probably make it to almost 40, but some characters are gonna get cut.
 
i was just taking a look back at this article where he said they didnt have time to recreate every character in previous smash's if there has been and updated interview somewhere int he past 2 months i wouldnt mind being directed to it

To me that sounds sorta like let's just swap some characters in and out instead of just adding more on top of Brawl.

Don't you think there's a possibility that he's changing direction in development to help make things feasible?

Sakurai did not confirm the game will have the same amount of characters. The statement is vague enough that it can mean something else.

I took that sentence as "We can't just add more characters." It's all up for interpretation.

He probably meant in the direction they've been going up until now.

I recall him saying he got Namco to co-develop to make the development of the game easier/faster. So I'd imagine this is what he meant by change in direction. I don't have the quote on me so I may be misremembering things. If anyone can find that quote, I'd appreciate it.

N's castle for the 3DS? And we get fucking Honeyhive Galaxy? Oh man, there had better be some stage transferability, or dlc for the Wii U version. Excite @ Wonder Red though.

Wow, N's Castle would be a wonderful stage! Not getting my hopes up for any of that, but I can't say I disapprove of any of that speculation.
 
I think sakurai is satisfied with the roster since brawl that he doesnt want to cut that many, probably ike and one or more pokemon characters from the roster, but I think everyone's finalized from this smash forward.

I'll only get excited for this only if there will actually be a Direct in the next few days. Until then, it's just another idiot trying to get people excited for nothing.
