Yes, but isn't it fair to say that Smash's Yoshi is Yoshi? As in, Mario's...pet Yoshi (which we can tell is specific)? This is the case with other characters as well, like Kirby -- the alts are even (probably intentionally) not the exact versions of actually different characters/versions of the species (the feet are different, I think), as if to denote that this is a specific character rather than just multiple appearances of a species.
I like to think Pikachu as Red's Pikachu too, and the fact that it often wears his hat helps. Though I guess that like with all Pokémon, it's possible that it does reference more than one characters. It does have Melee Pichu's goggles, and Jigglypuff has both the classic anime Jigglypuff's marker and Leaf's Hat (and Jigglypuff is often associated with Leaf across media). I guess the only one we can truly tell about is Mewtwo, since there's only a single Mewtwo.

Personally, these recent Mario games that include Toad as a playable character, like NSMB Wii/U and 3d World just reinforce the generic look of the games, rather than help Toad stand out as an unique character. NSMB, especially, really doesn't help things with the Toad pallet swaps with no differences between them.

Couldn't the same be said the the Toad? I mean Super Mario RPG which showed the world was full of Toads still had a character who was known as the Toad.

I'm so happy. I was kinda hoping they'd simplify the design a bit too, so it wasn't as frilly/layered and more like her actual design, but I still like it, and it fits within the game world's aesthetics. She still looks fabulous, and I can't wait to slay with her. I played Melee again the other day and she was so amazing back then.
Also I do think blue Toad is a real possibility to round of the platforming foursome, especially with his recent appearances. As much as people lament over the amount of characters linked with the Mario franchise, it is what Nintendo are known for, and I think it was about time they got a new rep, especially a "new school" character. Sakurai's cryptic comment about how her moveset may change also makes me question if Toad will be a newcomer if her (amazing) counter was removed.

Toad has a new model there though, but not one good enough for a playable character. I don't think they'd have made a new model for the attack if they were planning to drop it.

Usually we would get one before TGS so we should know anything about direct by today, tomorrow, monday, tuesday or wednesday.
I don't know if I'm looking too much into this, but what is this island in the background? I assume this is the Pilotwings stage, but I don't recognize this area from either Wuhu Island or any of 64 islands...
Edit: Looking further into it, I found this map from one of the new islands of Wuhu, which matches the geometry, but I can't find an actual screenshot of the area...

I think I have seen that place in Maka Wuhu at Mario Kart 7
That's what I believe as well. It's the obvious assumption. After all, if it was a random Toad, they'd implement something to make it obvious, like randomly picking a different colour Toad each time or giving it a red vest (like in 3D Land for non-Toad Toads). That isn't the case, so, I think this is the Toad character.

Strange that they blew through all four Mario veterans while all other series are sitting at one or zero.

Next character reveal will be Yoshi.
After that will be Bowser Jr.
Then Shy Guy.
The whole game will be just Mario characters.

Peach looks great. It's super weird that they would get through all the current Mario characters so fast, though... it very much makes me think that Mario has at least one newcomer.
And that it's probably not Toad, considering Peach's Neutral Special is confirmed and seemingly chosen for the screenshot set specifically to say "sorry, guys, don't get your hopes up for Toad". I mean, very few Specials have been shown for characters, so it seems that they chose this one for a reason.
On a more separate note, the ribbony effect they added to her up-smash looks a little odd. Maybe it looks better in motion?

only 15? wow it seeemed like more to me. if we get a character about every month up to December of next year that would be only 30 in total so there could be room for more reveals in certain time spands. cool.
Yeah, using the different colours as introduced in Super Mario Sunshine would make them general toads. All I was trying to point out is that Toad the character is a little more than just a general grunt like Village was trying to say.
