Sakurai mention that Sonic was the most requested especially in the West. I can't recall him saying because of the West.
Also there is no actual lead on Jiggs or G&W getting the boot. They are so in it's not even funny. They are just fairly unpopular with the "cool" crowd and guys who think their presence in Smash "doesn't look right." Freakin Ridley haters...

Thanks lol, this is why I love 64. Characters like Ness have a legit chance, not to mention how fun 2v2s are because of the crazy team combos thanks to hitstun.

"Characters like Ness"? Ness is one of the best 3 characters in the game, probably the second best after Pikachu.
Smash 64 is surprisingly well-balanced, even the "bad" characters Samus and Link can compete.

I think the problem with using grid systems to make rosters is that it creates a need to round out and trim the roster in accordance with making neat rows, right angles, franchises in tidy lines rather than considering which characters are likely to be developed with finite resources. It happened to work out pretty nicely with Brawl, but obviously they would just adjust the layout once the character list was finalized.
I actually found a program in SmashGaf's IRC and went nuts, picking what I thought were obscure characters that no one would pick. Because of the program, it displays it only at that size, but since I'm bored, I'll list all the characters, column by collum.

On Jigglypuff's inclusion, I'll say this: provided they don't rush the game out, I'd say she's definitely in. I don't think the Pokemon Company demands her inclusion but they obviously don't mind it, and for Brawl it was probably something like "Get jiggs in if you have time, but Lucario is the priority.

Huh, apparently Ness fell quite a bit since I've followed competitive Smash 64, he was solidly placed in the Top 3 for the longest time.
For those of you who are confused about Pikachu and that list in general - Smash 64 is REALLY heavily tilted towards characters with strong throws. If a character's throw game is good, they are good, and vice versa. Pikachu's throws are among the best in the game (and so are Ness', which is why I'm surprised to see him fall that far!).
Add that to a generally very solid character, and that's why he's ahead of the rest.
Even then, in Smash 64 moreso than the other 2 installments, the character balance worked out for the most part, so even those placed in the bottom tier are still viable.

Holy shit, when did Ness drop so harshly in net rankings? I knew about Kirby being BS from Day 1 (hello near-to-ground down air infinite on Hyrule Castle), but wow. Seeing all this in words and diagrams about a game you might have poured half your current lifetime into without knowing about its technicalities as judged by a competitive entity is weirdly enlightening.
Luigi being second to worst is also surprising to me.

Yeah this list is pretty accurate, but no one is "bad" in this game. Everyone's pretty useful, but others are more easily exploitable like Kirby's crazy hitboxes.

Out of the veterans not yet revealed I think Wario is the one I want back most.
I want Ness and Captain Falcon back. As long as they're both there I'm happy.
If I understand what you mean, previously playable characters regardless of whether or not any changes are made to their look or moves.
For me - Sonic, Lucas, Mewtwo, Toon Link and some others I can't remember

Wario, hands down. There's quite a few that could be said to share the 2nd place (Captain Falcon, Wolf, G&W, ROB), but Wario is my most wanted vet to return.
Shortly before E3, somebody posted a list of leaked newcomers, which was eerily accurate at one half (Villager, Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer). It also named 3 others - Pac-Man, Little Mac and Mii - to be revealed.
The leak said they would be revealed at E3 as well, but PR plans can change quite a lot, so people consider it to be the most reliable leak as of yet.

I'm pretty sure the Smash 64 cast is safe for being in the game.
Toon Link and Sonic are two from Brawl I HOPE return but not certain about. On one hand, Wind Waker HD is just coming out so he is somewhat currently relevant, but he's kind of a weird character to begin with so it's questionable. And not weird like quirky funny weird which seems to guarantee you a spot. Sonic is a third party character, which is why I am most questionable if he'll return as Nintendo seems stingy on letting third party characters in or letting them take up any significant part of the roster. On the other hand, Sonic is immensely popular and the most requested character in the Smash series, he's been in several games with Mario since Brawl, he has exclusive games coming to the WiiU, and SEGA and Nintendo seem very buddy-buddy these days, so that would make it seem like he's likely to return.

I'm guessing if Snake comes back he'll be the Metal Gear Solid 3 version/Big Boss since that was his "latest" release on a Nintendo system. His stage if any would be a nice looking jungle or some other area from the game. Maybe one involving the Shagohod? It's nice to dream.

Someone posted Wii Fit Trainer, Mii, Little Mac, Animal Crosser, Mega Man and Pac-Man before the E3 reveal so its still possible that we are getting other three. I'm starting to suspected that its lucky guesses.
Jigglypuff barely make in SSBB so I'm concerned that she mightn't make in next game.

I dunno man, Wii Fit Trainer is a pretty off-the-wall guess to be lucky at. That and the 3 remaining characters all seem likely too.
"Barely" or not, she was in the game. Also, I wouldn't call adding her later on than the initial roster "barely". Mewtwo barely didn't make it into the game.

I definitely agreed with you on Laughing Dog. I can't really see him being in Smash but I'm still rooting him to be in the game in any form. Hopefully they would make Duck Hunt stage, but I doubt it anyway.

There's no way, man. Mega Man you can grant anyone, and even Villager isn't a huge stretch. But both of them in the same guess along with WFT? There's not enough luck in the world.
I don't think it proves the other three characters are legit (the source could've been trolling, or been incompletely informed), but there had to have been a source. Besides the leaker actually does work for a fairly well-known news site, so that establishes a lot more likelihood of having some insider info.

What I meant is that he could know first three revealed characters and he randomly added other three characters to the list for laughs. At same time, you are looking at two stages which could be perfect representative stages for Mii and Little Mac. Yeah, Pilotwing/Waha Island stage and Smash Dojo ring stage are screaming for playable Little Mac and Mii, so I'm waiting for Sakurai to decide to announce them to the audiences so we can sigh in reliefs and move on with speculations for newcomers that are not leaked.
However, I really hope that Little Mac would get in the game but I'm afraid that I would get my hope high for him.
Maybe they are free.
