Special snowflake syndrome, as seen with the ever-common and obnoxiously passive-aggressive "Am I the only one who [controversial opinion]?"

Thread titles that start with "So", for example:

"So I just watched Sesame Street for the first time...

"So Apple just released a new iPhone"

"So I'm going to be a father"

Etc.

I don't think talking about religion as mythology is a big problem, though it likely depends on context.

On the other hand, "fairy tales," "magic man in the sky," "the crazed imaginings of desert tribesmen," and the like are clearly just meant to be insulting. People really need to stop doing that.

Naw it's like this: most major religions HAVE myths. But Marvel and DC and Joss Whedon have myths too. Religions have things like The Talmud and sharia. The letters in the new testament aren't stories and often aren't even concerned with the supernatural. A religion is more than a set of myths.

Using "mythology" is just as combative as to say "dumb old stories and fairy tales". It's a disrespectful way to write off more than half of humans. "Myth" carries connotation of Greek and Roman mythology which pretty much everyone in the West at least understands to mean quaint stories of a superstitious long-dead people.

Trying to re-appropriate and misapply someone else's vocabulary is just a bummer.

Forum posting habits that annoy me: superior disrespectful attitudes thrown about only to make other people less happy. Spreading derision. World's angry enough without people trying to goad each other.

This thread probably isn't the place. Guess I got sentimental.

Is that not the definition most people mean when referring to a religion as a myth? Creation myth seems fairly common and I never hear it used derisively.

.

I have no idea what definition "most" people mean, but I know that enough people use the definition that I listed , and it should be considered as a definite possibility of what someone means when they use the word when describing religion

There are quite a few things that can annoy me, but watching two posters who (more or less) agree with each other have a slapfight because they're too focused on scoring points to actually read what the other person is saying is certainly up there.

Guilty of this to a kind of embarrassing degree.

I'd say I'm working on it but that's not really the case.

People who make the drama and discussions on here all personal and shit.

It's pretty awkward. Like chill it's just a forum no need to get all riled up.

People on gaf drop fuck to much. There are a ton of examples and it just turns me off when I see it. I pretty much set everybody who does it on my ignore list because I realize that they cannot add anything good to a conversation without having to resort to fuck? Like, really?

"Fucking lol"
"This. Fucking this."
"There was absolutely nothing fucking good about that movie. Fucking nothing."

It just makes you look immature and exposes the lack of a good vocabulary.

Your name is fucking FUBAR...

Going into a thread having read nothing more than the thread title and the OP, not reading whatever the OP links to or any replies, and then dropping a one-liner that was tired five topics ago. At least Ctrl+F through the thread and realize you are the tenth person to make a Kickstarter joke in a thread with Penny Arcade in the title/fifth person to make a PRISM or NSA joke in a Microsoft thread/whatever.

Going into a thread having read nothing more than the thread title and the OP, not reading whatever the OP links to or any replies, then asking a question that has been asked and answered three times a page for the past five pages.

Really it's just people who seem to think threads only really start when they show up. I get not having time to read everything in a huge thread, or a fast-moving thread, but at least skim the first and last couple of pages to get an idea of the conversation.
So much this. Nothing aggravates me as much as posters posting the same stupid shit, over and over again, especially when it's due to a misunderstanding that reading the damn OP would clear up. It happens all the time, on both sides of the board. People who do this should be ashamed, and the rest of us think you're idiots.

- Typing "mic drop" or posting a mic drop.gif at the end of one's post. Fuck off with that.

- When point-scoring between two "sides" (why does there even have to be "sides"?) becomes the objective rather than reasoned discussion.

- Conversely, when one tries to discredit an argument purely because numerous people are agreeing with it, so "it's just all them fanboys".

- "I'm contrarian, look at me!"

- "First post GAF" replies for pages and pages and pages.

I hate people who post this image:

It should be banned like some of the other memes. Everytime I see it I just get angry even if it's something I agree with. Something about that image just sets off a fire inside me.

Religions are quaint stories of superstitious still-living people. This isn't goading.

It's a disrespectful way to write off more than half of humans.

Understanding that more than half of humanity has been grandfathered into superstition at birth is "disrespectful"? It "write them off"?

Posts and posters spinning every comment by developers into the console war narrative are extremely tiring to me.

For that matter, I don't like when threads snowball into negativity without posters at least trying to bring some nuance to their comments. Criticism is fine and often deserved, but in a hot topic where most posts amount to one or two sentences praising or hating on a feature it creates such a polarized environment that even minor annoyances become The Worst Thing Ever.

People who say "...but thats just my opinion!" - well, no shit.
Meh, I sometimes use this or IMO to specifically mark that I'm aware of other opinions being as valid as mine. It's a deliberate, if "unnecessary", way of nuancing my posts, to connect with my comments above.

People who quote the OP, the whole OP, with images and everything. Like nobody would know what your talking about if you didn't quote it.
At least take the majority of the crap out of the quote.

People constantly quoting one post over and over again just to give pointless responses like: lol, dead, nailed it, etc.

It largely depends on how you express yourself. You don't have to believe that a religious person's opinions are worthy of respect, but you should still treat the people who hold those opinions respectfully. Not because they are religious, but because they are people.

Anyway, this thread isn't for debates about religion, it's for people to let off a little steam. Relieve some pressure on the boiler.

The only thing that truly ever bothers me is when people backseat mod or tell you how you should or shouldn't be posting/responding to a thread.

"Aww yiss" isn't even how you would say that and it adds nothing to anything. Idiots.

I imagine they're saying "aw yes" with like a strong foreign accent or something.

Then sometimes I think they're saying "awww yeeeaaahhhsss", but were actual foreigners so they misunderstood it as 'aw yiss'.

This is very much what I feel.

I am not a religious person myself, and have been burned by religious folk in the past. But simply because someone believes in something I don't doesn't mean I think less of them. If it works for them, it works for them!

For how many posts happen on gaming side, there is very little analysis and discourse on how game mechanics or gameplay actually meld together in a game. Most of the time its opinions being shot out of keyboard taps and mouse clicks. Some criticism for games amounts to people posting one sentence, with a concept or term being thrown in and its to be assumed that one concept or term should be considered terrible just cause.

Tons of people on NeoGaf love to shit on paid videogame writers, but when given a platform or stage to discuss games, a lot of people don't say anything meaningful or new. Its possible to present any idea or concept in this gigantic forum, any perspective can be argued for at any time. Yet with this freedom a lot of posts amount to opinion championing or shaming.

Another issue is the rabid mentality of promoting one thing while shit talking another separate thing. "The Witcher absolutely shits on Mass Effect" "Saints Row is what GTA used to be, fun."

Most of the time discussions feel moot because there isn't a common ground. Very few people admit positive things about games they don't like, while at the same time they don't mention glaring issues in games they do enjoy.

Posting memes, both verbal and visual, and dumb slang like "feels" is incredibly annoying to read. Everybody ends up sounding exactly the same and it's not remotely funny or compelling to post something we've seen 10,000 times before. Also, threads full of generic reaction gifs with no other content in the post.

"It's all starting to add up now, isn't it? The levitation... the evil book reading... them cream cookies you always eating. You a damn witch."

My husbands mother thinks very much along those lines, to the point that she accused me of being an evil witch that cast a spell on her darling child.

Seriously.

I am not sure if it is because I am not religious or because I am Native.

Inspired by this whole thread, a NeoGAF poem.

What I gather from this thread is that if you post then there's always someone who's annoyed at you.

Being annoyed is part of NeoGaf's charm. If something is annoying, the main goal is to shut down or dominate someone by arguing and debating extremely well. Diplomacy is another trait that's needed.
