Driver in front of me purposely ran over baby raccoon crossing the street...

So I was debating whether to even make this thread, but for some weird reason, it's all I can think about. A few hours ago, as I'm driving home, I see this family of raccoons cross the street like 50 meters ahead.

It's the same family I've seen for the past several months near my neighborhood. When I take my dog out for walks at night, I've seen them cross, all sorts of streets. One time at a local park, we came up to them and the baby and mom scurried up this tree while the dad held his ground and was making weird aggressive noises.

And so, I see that the baby is the last one to cross and he's safely out of the 'middle' of the road, and closer to the sidewalks and this driver purposely pulls to the right a bit and runs right over him and speeds away. I look back as I'm ahead and see his body all sort of squished under the street lights.

I don't know why people do this. I have no love for raccoons, but it was almost cruel in a sense. Just imagine what the mom/dad raccoon were thinking. And I remember reading an article a while back, about how this guy would put fake turtles on roads to draw attention to declining numbers and people would purposely want to run them over.

Thoughts?

If an animal runs out in front of you while you're driving, I'd say there's nothing wrong with holding the wheel straight and hitting it to prevent any danger to yourself from suddenly swerving to try and avoid it. It's just one of those things.

However, in this case, actively going out of your way to run over an animal that wasn't directly in your path is just cruel and inhumane.

Raccoons are vermin and should be treated as such. From property damage to the spread to disease they are annoying as fuck.

A lot of people do this. I think they did a study or something to find out why so many armadillos were dying, and they found that lots of people confessed to deliberately aiming for them. It's like they don't expect to actually hit them, but they try to, and it happens.

Ever squished a bug for no reason? Kinda the same thing. Guy sounds like a dick though.

Funny you mention this, yesterday there was this huge beetle thing in the window. Don't know how it got there or why. My gf wanted me to Raid the thing, but for some reason, I didn't want to just kill it. I grabbed a wad of tissues, grabbed the bug and took him out back in the grass and unfurled it.

Don't know what's wrong with me lately lol, probably same reason I'm kind of upset at this raccoon situation. And like that baby one was so small and it's that I've seen this exact family of raccoons like several dozen times the past few months. It didn't need to die, was already out of the road, this guy purposely swerved all the way to the right just to hit it and then sped off.

They found that women did it almost as much.

so I'm trying to find the article or study, and I get 20 versions of this article "Pregnant Woman Craves (and Eats!) Roadkill". and I wonder, if they really needed to reprint this story in so many different news sites.

Saw a video once where people purposely placed a plastic turtle over the dividing line and filmed how many drivers went out of their way to swerve to hit it. A shocking amount of people did so.

Edit: Okay, that's what I get for waiting too long to hit the post button. That's the video.

Anyone purposefully causing suffering or killing something just for the fuck of it is reprehensible. You can try to justify it anyway you want, but I think it points to the fact that many people aren't particularly well adjusted...

pretty much spot on. ive had to hit a few animals becuase of the cars around me and not being able to swerve.

...Sarcasm and stuff...

But anyway, animal cruelty in any form sucks.

Is it? Is it really? I know my share of Dog owners, they are nuts. I asked my sister the Gaf question of "if you loose control of your car and on the left there's a Dog and on the right there's a person, which way would you swerve?" and of course she ran over the person. And she said it so proudly.

That's terrible! You have to be quite horrible to purposely kill an animal.

That said, I did kill a rabbit once near the Grand Canyon. We were arriving there at night, and this rabbit was crossing the street, and when it saw my headlights it stopped walking. So I swerved a bit to go around it, but as the headlights moved so did it, running right in the path of my wheel again. I swerved another time, same thing. In my final try, all I could do was aim the car in the middle of it so it would pass under the car. But as the headlights passed it, it started running and ended up right under the wheel of the car.

I felt so bad for so long, if only I had slammed the brakes :(

Can't imagine running over an animal on purpose.

This right here.

If you want to kill an animal for its fur, its meat, whatever, at least you have some purpose behind that killing. If you're killing a random squirrel or rabbit in the street just to kill it, well, you're fucked up in the head.

- Racoons are vermin, riddled with disease. He did the world a favour.

- If something is on the road, you have to hit it. That's the rule. You can't swerve out of the way in case you crash

So I have to hit that old woman that can't cross a road in under 20 seconds?

Driving over a creature purposely(!!) is always inappropriate.

Yeah no offense to your sister but morally i don't understand that point of view. I don't care if its a stranger versus a dog i've had for 15 years i'll always choose the person. Alot of the people i know who would pick the animal have always been hurt in some way by people( not saying your sister was) and animals don't judge people so they feel a connection.

The person is a lot tougher than the dog.
And a lot more likely to get out of the way.

Seems like a good choice.

I know that I'll run over Iguanas here rather that dodge them .

Also if it is a choice between you and a dog, I would splatter you any day of the week over that comment.

Iguanas are a pest here, they harm dogs and cats, had disrupted the local popular and cause accidents in the Avenues.

What the hell is going on with all this raccoon hatred? It's a living creature that has a right to exist, as do you. Killing them because of a risk of pandemic diseases is one thing, but aiming your car at a newborn, to make things worse, is just disgusting and sick.

Even if they have diseases, there are more respectful ways to deal with that. Take the swiss for example: Every few months, the forester scatters little packs of meat in the forest with medicine/antibiotics in them to preserve our foxes and save them from rabies.

I think most people here have never been to a country where real vermin exists.

She hasn't, she is great with people. But she is crazy about Dogs. I complete agree with your view, I don't care if it's lassie vs a the local bum, sorry pooch.

It was mean but raccoons are vermin so I wouldn't shed a tear over it. In the wild they get killed by predators and many of them die at a young age. Plus, you didn't see everything that happened. Some of these small animals are complete idiots. Squirrels are especially YOLO and will actually wait on the side of the road when a car is coming and then when you're about 10 ft away, they jump out and play some real life Frogger game with their lives. Maybe this raccoon did something similar.

I think any person that feels that human life is worth less than that of a dog is a human whose life is a blight on humanity.

This was a different case. The drive went out of it'd way to kill the Raccoon, swerving to the side.

The fuck kind of thinking is this? It's a hazard and you wait for it to cross. Who ever taught you to run over hazards? lol

What if you run over a bigger animal that makes your car swerve? I don't really see the point in risking that.
