I hate every single reddit and 4chan "written" meme that seeped in here. "Feels, dat, aw yiss"...

OM NOM NOM. FUCKING OM NOM NOM. Why does anyone want to write out the sound someone makes when they eat? Yeeeeetch.

edit: Also even though I do it myself I'd like people to stop using spoiler tags for things that aren't spoilers. Because 10% of the time, that blacked out area may actually be a spoiler when you thought it was some punchline.

People who use facepalm gifs and pictures...oh, I might as well just say the whole facepalm thing, altogether. Just irritates me, for some reason.

Oh, YES, YES, YES! Especially the whole "feels" thing.

Hashtags and that guy who says "fellow gaffer(s)" in every post of his.

I love The Monk, he's one of my favorites here. It's great when there's a vitriolic Xbone vs. PS4 thread and he pops in just thanking somebody for something in such a friendly manner.

How many people even do signoffs? 3-4?

I understand a lot of the complaints in this thread, but this one puzzles me.

"XYZ defense force"
Quoting a post with just "wow" or other single words, expressing disbelief.

I'm sure i'm guilty of these myself, but i still think they're incredibly annoying, they bring nothing to the discussion, aside from flame potential and in the case of "defense force" they usually simplify someone's point of view.
They're no different than the "GAF Hivemind" crap.

If you've got something to say say it, or stay the fuck out of the thread.

This made me laugh. Add fuck to anything cute or innocent, and that juxtaposition always gets me.

"Well, that's a thing." or "When did ____ become a thing?".

or any other shitty variation of that shitty phrase.

When people saw "d'aww": What's with the d? There's no d in "aww". What kind of psychopath actually says it like that?

I didn't actually read this thread but I think I am qualified to say that the GAF hivemind has failed once again to convince me that anyone could be "annoyed" by posting habits

whatever, I made my point. you can close the thread now

People wanting Bish's avatar shopped into everything. It's funny sometimes, but every .gif posted in the funny pictures thread is not suited to a "banned" .gif. Likewise, enjoyable as it is, posting hot women's tits jiggling isn't really "funny" and maybe doesn't belong in that thread either.

What I hate most, though, is when people think short, barbed statements are best. You're trying to have a discussion on, say, creamy vs chunky peanut butter and their counter-argument is just thinly veiled insulting one liners.

If we made a list out of all the things mentioned in this thread, and made that into a rule set that everyone had to follow, NeoGAF wouldn't be as fun as it is.

Ultimately you have to strike a balance, because you do want the forum to be a place where people can have fun in a topic, but you also don't want things getting out of hand or to let things fall into a rut where nobody puts in any effort into anything.

This reminds me of the term "GAF hive mind" is one of the annoying terms I found here.

Can someone explain why this shit isn't bannable? When I first got here, I thought the mods were just very hands off. But that's clearly not that case. Go into any thread where a controversial topic is discussed and you'll see a massive amount of banned accounts. With that in mind, it's just bizarre that nothing is done about the 4chan/reddit catchphrases.

No, it goes back further than Wario64, who is just perpetuating it. It's actually from a Brazillian neer-do-well whose name is still in the censor and whose command of the English language left much to be desired at the time.

It's just under Superkyro old as GAF things go.

ahuahauhauah

In the context of zero-content posts that consist of some random internet meme and nothing else, I agree. If we're just talking about banning language that annoys you, that's a hard thing to police. People have different mannerisms and not everyone is consciously doing it to be trendy.

Yeah, it's the zero content thing. 99.5% of the time those catchphrases or used, it'll just be followed by 1 or 2 words and that's the whole post.

"This x 1000" is fine if someone then posts a paragraph of explanation for why they agree but that's almost never the case.

"Well where was the outrage about [tangentially related thing]?"

Nine times out of ten, there was in fact outrage over the other thing, the person saying this is just ignorant. The tenth time, it's something obviously damnable that people shouldn't have to prove their credentials over anyway.

First, read this.

What do you mean by 'every single thing'? Novels, newspapers, administrative or legal paperwork? They do not have standardly two spaces.

Have you ever consulted a style manual? Chicago, MLA, that kind of stuff?

And where are you located? In the US? I know of no workplace where two spaces is standard or recommended.

Nope, it is NOT standard in legal writing in the US. In fact, in the few places where guidelines for legal writing are given, they explicitly say to use one space.

If your workplace uses two, it is definitely non-standard.

When creative works are published for print, they invariably have that second space stripped out. It's considered poor typography. And digitally, most software strips it out automatically.

I'm like you, I was taught to use two spaces after every period. It wasn't until later that I learned this was incorrect—and it didn't take near as long to unlearn it as I would've thought.

Everything I know is a lie.

I've always prided myself on my good grammar and typing skills. I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop doing it, because it just looks wrong to me. Maybe I'll eventually phase it out, but this is seriously the first time I've ever heard of it. And like I said, I am a published author.

I am actually sorta depressed over this. You kids and your single spaces and everything is different!

I hate when people post a picture of a game, movie, whatever and they don't specify what it is, as if everyone is supposed to know what they're looking at.

If I'm not entirely incorrect, that is actually bannable, though I can't remember when it was made so. I'm just glad that most of the time people get annoyed and ask within a few posts. Makes it more rare.

"Stay classy."

It's always used sarcastically. Why can't we acknowledge when people who are being classy? Is such a moment even possible on the internet?

Also, unnecessary use of "literally", "actually", etc.

"I am literally feeling sad because my grandma died." Good thing you clarified; otherwise I would have thought you were figuratively sad.

Oh, and the word "shit" hamfisted into the most strange phrases and sentences. I see this on NeoGAF a lot in particular.

I've got a new one:

Using the word "patently" before either true or untrue. Most people don't know what it means and add it to increase their word count/smartness. It rarely adds to your point.

Overall I hate when people use certain words they would never say out loud, like "dat" or "quite" because it sounds stupid. Well, it's still stupid when you type it.

When people "/thread" their own posts.

STOP THAT!

Only other people can /thread your post. Stop /thread-ing yourself.

"yeah this article is basically complete garbage

/thread"

When threads are made that can be discussed in the thread the topic is based on.

Example:
Thread made "gta code shows ps4, pc sku's"
Then someone makes a thread "could you wait for ps4, pc sku?"
Yep fuck that shiet. That's a conversation that should be happening in the same thread and that kind of thing happens all the time

When someone posts an untagged spoiler and then someone else quotes it while complaining about it so that even if the original poster edits it and adds tags, the spoiler is there for all to see.

And yes, contra-temporal quoting is a work of pure evil.

When I make a really good post and people don't quote it and sing me praises for said post. That's like really mean and makes me sad.

Funny thing is, I bet it only looks wrong to you when you're writing it, not when you're reading it. Grab a couple novels off your shelf and see. Hell, read this very forum. The extra space is gone.

See what, I mean?
See what. I mean?

Huh, is ****** really still censored? Oh it is, how funny. I barely even remember that dude.

...I'm gonna use "stay classy" seriously at some point. Please look forward to it.

Don't worry, I still do this too. Even in everything I type on the forum, despite knowing the spaces are just going to vanish. Long-ingrained habit.

It might be "wrong" but there's really nothing wrong with it.
