Halo 2 made me want to get a 360 Halo 4 makes me think I can pass on Xbone

I only played the campaign. It was a horrible Halo campaign. As I've said in other threads, I liked exactly one level in the entire game, and only because it reminded me of Pillar of Autumn and Cairo somewhat melded together, and even that was almost ruined at the end of it. As for multiplayer, I haven't played multiplayer on a Halo title since 3.

Halo 4 is almost definitely the worst designed Halo from both a single player and a multiplayer standpoint. I'm terms of art and production, it's fantastic but the Promethean Knights as an enemy are at odds with what make the Halo sandbox interesting and the multiplayer is an awkward clusterfuck compared to the other games in the series.
 
I'd still put Halo 2 campaign's above Halo 4's. In all my hours playing co-op campaign with my friend in Halo 2, we never encountered a level breaking glitch, and we played a lot of Halo 2 co-op. In our first playthrough of Halo 4, a door wouldn't open halfway through the level and we had to restart the entire thing. Thanks, 343 quality control.
 
I disagree, I think Halo 4 is great and much better than 3. Seeing how amazing the campaign in Halo 4 looks makes me very excited to see what they will do with a new console.

For me: CE > 2 > 4 > 3 > Reach
 
Halo 2 and Halo 4 are pretty much on the same level for me, loved them when they first came out, two weeks later all their flaws started creeping into view and they started bumming me out. Specifically with the singleplayer campaign being a letdown on return visits, specifically the Arbiter and the Promethean-focused levels being tedious to go through.

Hopefully Halo 5 or whatever it's called comes out and brings me back on like Halo 3 did. Having a break year between releases will probably help too, this is the first year without a Halo fps since 2009, so I may be jonesing for that Halo-feel come 2014.
 
I think ms should release thier first party games on PC as well as Xbox. I don't think they would cut into each others markets that much and promote both platforms simultaneously.
 
Halo is the reason I bought the 360 and is the reason why I am getting an Xbox One. Can't wait to see what 343i bring next gen and if they can top this gen (halo3/ODST/halo wars/Reach/4). Great universe still so much to explore. I think a lot people might hold out to see what Halo 5 is like in the build up to next November and then pick up an Xbox One.
 
Halo 4 was fantastic. Laughable how much hate it gets here.


As good as Bungies finest? No. But it was their first attempt.



That said, marketing wise, the Halo 5 trailer is the worst Halo trailer ever, and the first announcement not to have me overflowing with excitement.

Titanfall is being released on the PC, XB1, 360, and a rumored PS4 version when the exclusivity runs out. You don't necessarily need to pick up an XB1 for the tile.

Personally will be picking it up on PC. The high movement speed of both the Titans and the players coupled with the non-ADS requirement for the titans seems to be perfect for M/KB controls.

You may know all of this already, but you would be surprised how many people do not realize Titanfall is a multiplatform game.

Oh I know, just thought if OP was making the jump to next gen anyway, the next-gen version of Titanfall being released first (or only) on the might be a key differentiator. I just made the assumption OP was like me and preferred a couch gaming for shooters (I probably shouldn't have).
 
I'm kind of in that boat, I like the job they've done in the game trying to expand the universe but beyond all the bells and whistles, the game itself doesn't nearly have the enduring appeal the other 3 360 games had. So yeah, I'm totally less excited about Halo than after Reach.

On a similar note, the Halo 3 reveal cemented my 360 purchase while the Halo 5 reveal made me realize I didn't nearly care enough to buy a console for it.

One could call it franchise fatigue except I still love playing the older games.
 
I loved 4, but they alienated a huge chunk of the halo population with the gameplay changes. They should have made a Halo classic playlist with old school settings and older maps remade in forge.

I don't think they're that bad, they just need a bit more tweaking, and I'd take Prometheans over the Flood any day - the Flood are dire.
 
I was in a simlar boat as the OP. I loved Halo and would follow Bungie where ever they went, and that made the 360 a no brainer for me. I think Reach represented a drop of quality from Halo 3 and ODST, but was still a good game overall.

Once they went 3rd party, it was then a question of how much of a draw a Halo title by another developer would interest me. Before Halo 4 released, my hypothesis was, I loved Halo because of Bungie and their design choices and that would be difficult for another studio to follow.

After Halo 4, that hypothesis was confirmed. I thought it was a decent to poor game overall, but it was a very poor Halo game. As a result the series has no draw for me any longer and it's not a factor in my thinking about which platform to go with for next-gen.

I wonder if the number of people interested in Halo 5 has decreased like the amount of players even playing the game.

I wonder how the DLC sales have effected their overall income for the title. Only a small percentage of the player base even buys DLC, if the vast majority of that player base is not even logging in, then they are reducing their revenue.
 
can't even play 2 player split screen online anymore in halo 4, the fps drops are horrific.

just one of the many reasons I'm not a fan of 343.

infinity slayer was just bearable in the beginning with only complex running bad, but ever since the forge maps were added into the rotation, me and the gf have stopped playing. shame because some of the forge maps were alright. what went wrong? halo reach forge maps ran just fine for the most part.
 
My cousin had a XBOX with Halo 2 and I would always play it at his house. When the X360 came out, I just had to get Halo 2 and play it for myself. Bought it and play Halo 2 until Halo 3 came out. No other Halo has done it for me the same way like the first 3 has.

P.S. Halo 1 on the PC was the best!
 
Halo 4 lacked the soul of the previous ones. It may play better but as far as being a good halo game I have to decline. It's multiplayer just felt boring and the Spartan ops was so janky to me that I ended up being pretty disappointed.
 
It's funny how perception drives everything. Because it is not Bungie, Halo 4 gets shit on harder than any other Halo game. If Bungie had made it, some of its short-comings would be overlooked or glossed over.

Overall, I think Halo 4 was a decent kick at the can for 343. You can tell they respected the source, and have big plans for this series down the road. They proved that they can make a gorgeous Halo game with a somewhat compeling story, and the multiplayer negatives were completely overblown. Now that they've got their feet wet, I look forward to seeing 343 taking a few more risks and releasing a killer next-gen game.

How about you grab that Halo 2 for the PC and play it again, maybe those nostalgia glasses will come off and you'll know that Halo 2 wasn't all that better.
 
It was 343i first real game, give them a break. Halo 4 isn't a unplayable game. Bungie's first game was shit compared to the Halo games they made. It's not easy to be a newly formed studio & just make the perfect Halo game.

So what, it proves that money, a couple ex Bungie employees, & good hired game devs that love Halo can't make their first Halo game perfect but i'm sure they have learned from the mistakes of Halo 4 & will do what ever they can to make the next Halo everything we would want it to be.
 
There are many reasons I'm not getting an Xbox, but generally speaking, I agree with the sentiment. Here's what I mean:

I didn't like Halo 2 all that much and ended up waiting a long time to pick up a 360 as a result (And did so largely because of the better multiplats). I didn't like Halo 4 all that much and, though I think it's better than Halo 2, I think it's indicative of the continued downward trend in the series. As a result, Halo has dropped from my radar as a selling point for the Xbox. That doesn't leave me with any other series I feel strongly about on the Xbox, and pushes me toward the PS4. Maybe someday 343 will convince me they're steering Halo back to it's roots, but right now, Halo is no longer a selling point.
 
MS makes me want to pass on the Xbone, not just Halo 4. While there is still a remote possibility that Halo 5 could be the greatest title in the series, given 343i's track record, I am going to wait and see.

From my perspective as of now, both consoles need an exclusive system seller. While the Halo games help sell consoles, I don't think future Halo titles will have the same draw to them.
 
I liked the MP in Halo 4 but personally I never really played the story in 4 and barely played it in 3. I usually play the story then MP but this time around I guess I had more friends doing MP at the time.

But because of that I'm not hype for anything Xbone has to offer. Of course I would want to play H5 but paying 500 to play one game in my situation wasn't worth it.

Heres to Destiny though hope thats the new halo (I'm pre ordering PS4)
 
Halo 2 set a standard back when it came out Halo 4 not so much. Not that it was horrible (though i didn't particularly like it) but other FPS games have since caught up to it's standard.

The new studio argument doesn't hold any ground. 343i Has said that they had a classic Halo experience before they dumped it and switched to the new experience, albeit under some pressure of MS. They've shown with Halo 4 that they have the technical know-how needed to make a great game. They've also shown us that they don't care about Halo by giving us Halo 4, a game with an identity crisis, a weak/cheap story and a lack of features from previous installments in the franchise.
 
Halo 3 is my favorite out of all of them, Forge mode was mind-blowingly fun with friends. So many fun custom games, campaign was great, and the multiplayer was awesome. Still waiting for a PC release...

More or less agree. Speaking strictly as a single player campaign dude, I find Halo 2 to be hands down the weakest in the franchise. Not a horrible game in and of itself, it's actually pretty good. But definitely a prime example of a game that failed miserably to live up to its hype, especially in terms of being a sequel that came nowhere near surpassing its predecessor. Every Halo since then has been an improvement.

Halo 4 wasn't particularly earth shattering, and I was sorry to see that it bore so many fingerprints of being handed over to a new team that didn't quite "get" certain things ("Hey, let's put in a totally generic mech walker!") but its campaign was leagues better than Halo 2's... and that's all I care about.

343 wasn't pressured by MS on sandbox design. They made those choices themselves
 
Within 2 years Microsoft will have closed down half of all its new studios and the output of titles will be Better With Kinect at best and Kinect-only at worst. And that's if they are successful. Imagine the opposite.
 
Thought Halo 4 had a great campaign, haven't played enough multi to comment but I enjoyed the Campaign more than Reach and ODST and they were better campaigns than Halo 2. Halo 2 was multi was a thing of beauty however.

I have played Halo 2 PC and guess what? I still think its better than 4 am I just crazy then or what? Only reason I don't play it a lot is because GFWL kicking me off XBL so I just play Halo CE with the Halo 3 sandbox .yelo maps.
Rose-tinted / nostalgia glass sayings are just dumb as shit.

If your platform purchases are justified by a single series, and more specifically by the previous entry in that series on the previous iteration of that platform, you're leaving yourself open to serious disappointment in several ways.

Also, to take the obvious bait: I think Halo 4 is a better game than Halo 2.

I pretty much agree with this post here. I'm definitely interested to see what they come up with next but Halo hasn't been a system seller type game for me since Halo 2.
 
Halo 2's campaign might have had some significant issues (Boring flood levels, overpowered Arbiter stealth, poorly done boss fights, insane damage sponge enemies, FUCK JACKAL SNIPERS), but at least there were actual highs to it instead of a big mass of watered-down cinematic bleh like Halo 4's.

I completely agree. Halo 3 was the sole reason I initially bought a X360 instead of a PS3. Halo 4 is the main reason why I have no interest in getting a Xbone. I just wish we get a good H3 PC port so we can get some decent IQ on that otherwise godlike game (yes, I even like the cortana level).
 
Halo's 4 campaign was fine if not formulaic in how it felt

Couldn't stand the multiplayer at all, played one or two games and never picked it up again

Everything that i loved about Halo 3's multiplayer was taken out back and shot

Heck I had my gripes about Halo 2 but it never got to the the depths of Halo 4 levels of unbalanced. It took a patch to fix a chunk of the problems Halo 4 had and even then that was months after the game was released.

When did they shut down Ensemble Studios? That's the one that hit me the most.
 
I'd have to join those that didn't like Halo 2, at least its campaign aspect, I just thought it was dull and rather boring, I ended up just running through multiple sections of the game to get on with it. I rank it as my least favourite Halo, I'm pretty sure I enjoyed Halo 4 more, but that isn't saying much when I found 4 to bit a bit of a mess and at the end a short disappointment.

Bungie made Reach. Reach received massive amounts of criticism. Halo 4 continued in the direction that Reach was taking the franchise, and received massive amounts of criticism.

Seeing a pattern here?
