Android Gaming Thread: News & Recommendations

I bought Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and it's an okay port. But... no, this is one of those games that I really can't enjoy without buttons. Weird, because it's a racer and I tend to like games like Asphalt or Riptide.

Guys, one of my great losses from my ol' iOS gaming days was Zombie Gunship. It's a really great sort of on-rails AC-130 shooting game like the helicopter missions from CoD. Well, this week Limbic software finally released it on Android about two or three years late!

Regardless, well worth $.99!

Thanks, I'm looking for something similar to Beachhead on Android for sometime now. This will do for now :)

Currently, I'm playing Reaper and SimpleRocket. Pretty good, esp Reaper.

I hope you guys like Gunship!

I've been enjoying Reaper recently, too. I don't know why but the choices you can make are pretty stressful. I want to be a good dude and help the Wilderlings but I just keep whoring myself out to the highest bidder.

Hey, we just put out Giant Boulder of Death on Android

Fun! Kotaku linked to a shady app with your game's name a few weeks ago on Twitter. I tweeted at them to correct it but I don't think they ever did :/ I think it was an app that linked to videos of your game, strangely enough!

Regardless, fun game.

Hey guys, I see Shadowrun Returns is coming out on iOS tonight. Has anyone heard if the Android version is out this week also?

Harebrain's facebook updated mentioned that the android version is ready to go and it's just the iOS version that's stopping it from release. so once it (iOS) passes they'll go live together

Hey, that's awesome to hear. Thanks! I kind of just assumed that, like so many apps, it would be a case of Android version coming out anywhere from between 6 months to 2 years later.

Do you guys think it would play alright on a 4.75 inch screen, or would you recommend this as the type of affair one should keep on their tablet?

Argh, that's frustrating. Yeah, we've seen those apps (there were 2 of them) and have tried going through Google's takedown dept but...it's a slow process. Glad you're enjoying the real version though!

Most emulators are legal, but pirating the ROMS is illegal, essentially.

If that SNES emulator amazes you, you may want to check out RetroArch - it has a ton of emulators all in one app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.retroarch. You'll need to provide your own ROM files and in some cases BIOS files, but it's a pretty neat collection of emulators for a mobile device.
Just checked it out and damn. Arcade machines, DS and even the Virtual Boys!
I would be amazed if they emulated the DS touchscreen to my tablet.

I agree, Drastic is an amazing DS emulator. Yes, it is pricey ($8), but it runs so well without any configuration necessary, at least on the hardware and games that I've been running (I have a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 7 that I've been using with it so far).

On another note, Humble Mobile Bundle 2 just launched today. It has a few debuts for Android, including the long awaited Star Command game that was Kickstarted... a long time ago.

Full list of games:
  • Star Command
  • Time Surfer
  • Punch Quest
  • Bloons TD 5
  • Ravensword: Shadowlands (BTA)
  • Carmageddon (BTA)

They're both out now according to an update I received earlier today. A bit disappointed that paying for whatever tier I paid for didn't include mobile versions, but I've barely touched it on Windows, so I guess I can live with it.

That's weird. Even my Arc S is compatible.

They'll probably fix it soon.
I had this same problem with Asphalt 8. Available on my Xperia P, available on my 2011 Sony Tablet S, unavailable on my new Xperia SP. But the weird part is that other SP units are compatible! Gameloft was nice enough to send me a download since my device should indeed be able to access it. Apparently my SP is a C5302, and for sine idiotic reason some apps are not compatible even if they are for the C5304 and C5306 models. And the specs are exactly the same :(

There's me thinking I could purchase Kingdom Rush Frontiers and that would be it... What's up with the ridiculous pricing for the more powerful heroes? Is there literally no other way to earn them other than by paying for them?

Not happy with it, kind of put me off playing completely

Game developers need to eat?

I was going to jump on this until I read a review somewhere that it was missing a heap of sound effects/music from the PC version to the point where most of the atmosphere of the original has been lost. Don't expect a 1:1 port.
I'm considering it, I mean it's a good deal at $10 usd. I'm sure the pc version is more expensive. What's help me back is the tons of apps I buy and never play.

I'm getting such a huge backlog it's ridiculous.

That's unfortunate. I wonder if it's something they'll fix or whether it was a deliberate design choice.

So, after an incredibly long wait we finally get Star Command on Android after it's been on iOS for months. They had to port it but also they apparently had to tweak some of the gameplay. I'm not entirely sure what they did because the game is so goddamn boring. Battles are spent sitting around doing nothing waiting for the incredibly slow weapon recharging. And then when they do fire you play these stupid unrelated minigames. Assigning crew members can sometimes result in them just wandering off to some other area of the ship, which can be really goddamn annoying if you've been boarded. But really, beyond that and a couple of other bugs, the game design in this thing is all over the place. Don't get that Humble Bundle if you're getting it for this game. Avoid it. Get FTL instead - it's significantly better designed.

From the quicklook i've seen a long ass time ago, game is not that different. You just have to make sure to assign people to their stations. If you move them, you have to re-assign them. Win battles, upgrade the weapon recharge speed and you're good to go.

2 Red Shirts per weapon area, one is always manning the weapon, the other one roams the ship for battles, at least one healer (to keep both redshirts alive), a at least 3 engineers in the engine room (one to man the station, other two to fix the ship) and you'll pretty much sail through.

Of course FTL is better, it's a better game. It's also not limited by a unreliable touch interface, has more variables and it's harder.

You don't need those heroes to finish the whole game and get all stars and achievements. Those heroes are like cheat codes that make the game easier.
