I've been doing CM and AK runs without really buying anything yet and I went to RT today and talked to the NPCs and was kind of like "OH AWESOME I CAN BUY LOTS OF STUFF".

Is there a guide to different ilevels of gear or what I should be buying now?

edit: Do I need tomes at all for my relic?

Monks are significantly gimped if they don't have tanks since their attacks hit harder on the flank. Lancers will also be doing 10% less DPS unless they open with Heavy Thrust. Also, if you're killing mobs out in the world, you probably don't have Shield Oath on, which reduces the damage you do.

While this is somewhat true, you CAN get the flank/behind bonuses as a monk/drg solo... It's just alot harder than being in a group with a tank.

I find I kill alot faster than tanks in the same area as me, and every time I do a move I always try to position for the bonus (when I need to bootshine, use it while walking behind the enemy and it should give the crit). Ofc, sometimes it doesn't work, especially with flanking because if the mob is turning, I think you never get the bonuses unless you're really spot on with the timing.

weird... i kinda expect 3-4 times more... why roll dps at all then if your big numbers aren't even that big O.o

Yeah, I know. I don't have amazing gear, mostly 55's with white jewelry, but my WAR can sometimes get crits for upwards of 600 with Storm's Eye/Butcher's Block/Inner Beast by stacking cooldowns.

This may seem like an odd question - but for my purposes -

what is the least lnexpensive laptop that can play this game? And I'm talking about do quiests - mining - botany - etc. I'm not looking to be doing the mega big dungeon runs or the like. Mostly just need a decent one to do some farming materials with and light play.

My current laptop is a piece of crap. All it's good for is reading gaf - and watching videos. I was finally able to get the game to download on it (been trying for weeks) and I'm getting all of 1 frame a second and I can't even mine or swing at a tree or walk lol...

I basically want to farm while I watch TV.

Is it as disappointing as it seems that your selection of cross class skills goes down to very little after you change to a job? White Mage has 7 possible cross class skills (assuming they have extremely high levels in arcanist/conjurer) and two of them are physick and ruin -- in other words, completely useless, because Cure and Stone make them pointless. Summoner has 6 abilities, and... I'm actually not sure if they're all useful. Is Hawk's eye any good on a summoner? At max level in a job, you have 5 slots, right? So you basically have no choice in what skills you take?

Anyway, it seems like such a shame that they have this cool cross-class skill system and then they gimp it at high levels to the point that you basically don't even have a choice for a lot of jobs. Any chance they'll open up more skills as cross-class as the game goes on? Have people complained about this?

Hi guys,

So I purchased FFXIV last week. I've been playing it a bit after work and I'm still trying to make sense of it. I created a Thaumaturge in Cerberus, but I think I can't make a summoner -- it seems I had to pick arcanist first? So I guess I'm going to be a Black Mage. I will continue on with this so I can learn more about the world and all that.

Having said that, I am so lost! I've been out of mmo in general for a while. I checked out Google Docs and apparently most gaffers seem to be in Ultros, so I am creating a new toon there. The new toon will be a White Mage most likely.

My toon name there is Elhaym Vierge (healer). I have also created Shioka Seibzehn (dps).

Ummm. That's kind of the point. The intention of jobs is not to be universally better than classes, but trade flexibility for specialization. The method by which the flexibility trade off occurs is by having a lower number of skill slots from other classes. Now in practice...

So do people still play classes at higher levels? I didn't realize that :)

The nice thing about FFXIV is that you don't have to have separate characters for different classes. In fact, it's best to use the same toon, because after you have one battle job at 50, you get 50% more EXP working towards any other battle class on the same toon.

ARC turns into SMN (caster) and SCH (healer). You can get access to both jobs on the same toon, but they don't always share the same gear, so you'll be having two different gear-sets. You also don't get to have 2 different stat allocations, but that's not a huge deal. There's more than enough wiggle room to play both.

Vastly.

Most of them give you tank NPCs so that you aren't actually in danger.. most of the time. Funny thing is, so do the tank story quests, so it takes forever.

oh yeah, i forgot. it's some of these paladin quests that throws waves of enemies at you that can fuck ya.

but if you have cure equipped, you should be ok.

Wait, what? D:

Ohhh man. So I've been creating toons left and right for no reason, hahahahahah. Well, now I feel silly.

The job system is absolutely brilliant. Messing around and borrowing from other battle classes is pretty much the primary way to customize your gameplay at this point. Once you get to 30 and unlock the job, it becomes a little more restrictive in terms of what cross-class abilities you can equip, but you also become vastly better at your core role.

It works even better when it comes to crafting. Which also makes it even more of a black hole, what a huge time sink.

Just straight out say it: "hey <player-who-hopefully-is-just-inexperienced-and-not-a-complete-idiot>, please attack the mobs that have the giant numbers above them. in order, and don't start attacking until I pull".

As for the healer... is he/she getting attacked by mobs? If so, then it does kind of fall on you as the tank to make sure you're getting aggro on all of them (and the DPS for not killing things in proper order or fast enough if that's part of the problem). In an ideal situation they'd just call out to the tank to go pick them up, but if it's just in a PUG, you really don't know if you can count on the tank to do so.

He just ran up to the mobs I was tanking and Fluid Aura'd them from time to time.

It's a pity the "best" part of 11/1.0 crafting didn't make it over: synths that require, say, 50 in woodworking AND 30 in smithing, all in one go.

Speaking of crafting: I have perfected the ultimate alchemy:
turning 100k gil into a touching cutscene.

I suppose instead of that, they included recipes with mats that would require a 50 Weaver, a 50 Carpenter, and a 50 Armorsmith to synthesize, in order to spur the P2P economy. I know on my server the market board is constantly hopping like crazy, everything sells in minutes.

wish paladin could get in the love. They are already too good themselves so mrd and conj skills do jack shit for them :(

I know, but my WAR is happy to steal some of your tricks. Speaking of which, do you find Awareness useful? It's kind of disturbing to me that I can receive critical hits as a tank. That was one of the things that kept damage under control in WoW.

I guess it's nice the game introduces various mechanics in steps, but it sure sucks running around for hours tapping 1 and Ctrl+1 and being completely unable to understand what is that fancy discussion in the game threads is even at all about, because so far (Conj@22, Arc@6) I've been breezing through the game with the gear it threw at me without even breaking a sweat. Am I in for a major difficulty spike shortly when I'll have to stop the roll and learn a lot of new stuff?

Hey guys, I'm level 25 right now but I'm still rocking lvl.15 gear I got from early dungeons. I have Satasha, Tam-Tara, Copperbell Mines and Halatali opened. Is it worth farming gear in any of these or should I wait till I hit 30 or so?

Healing is the hardest thing to do in FFXIV. You can faceroll your way to 50 by dropping Aero on mobs in fates, but if you don't do the starter dungeons and gradually learn along the way how to do your role, you're going to be totally lost.

The marauder damage reduction doesn't help them?

Foresight is pretty bad. It's about 5% damage reduction, which is pathetic compared to what Paladins get.

I recommend Qarn for his first optional dungeon >=D

(level 35)

If you're interested in going through levels fast I'd say FATEs (with story quests/ maybe some other stuff mixed in) will get you there a lot faster than dungeons, and you can do farming once you hit 50. It depends on how much you want to stop and smell the roses while you're in the mid levels, I think. I've been really enjoying playing some dungeons. But the truth is if you focus on leveling, the gear you get won't even be used as long as it takes to find it, because the leveling is so fast.

That's really not what I was talking about, I am not trying to breeze through levels, in fact I'm pretty confused that the story is lagging behind my own progression and I'm not even going out of my way that much. The first three instances weren't at all hard, so idk.

I got this game, but honestly all I've wanted to play from the start was Thief of Ninja.

I feel betrayed by Square.

Just going to get to lvl 50 Culinary class in the mean time.

I see. It was the same for me - I was always 5-10 levels or so ahead of the story. It's easy to get in the zone of hunting log, FATEs, area quests, and suddenly oh crap, I haven't done Brayflox yet and i'm level 40.

They'll be in the game. Level up Pugalist/Monk as it is pretty much guaranteed to be the required classes. Maybe Marauder too.

Besides, Monks are like Thieves anyway.

I see, yeah I should probably not worry about it until I get to 50.

Except without the stealing.
QQ

I'll maybe go as far as unlocking Monk, and getting any other cross class skills I think I'll want.

Nice. Gratz.

I'm gearing up a bit myself so I can do Garuda and Titan in one swoop if possible.

Good luck. I've put in over 25 hours on titan hard mode. Even if you run the fight perfectly every time if other people are dying (every time this has been happening due to lag or mechanics) it will take a long time to beat.

I've never been raging like this in a long time and I played ff11.

I still need to do Haukke Manor for the first time, I'll be on later tonight. I'm a tank. Hopefully the whole server issue will be sorted out, I was skipping the gym tonight just to play.

I'll be up for that, no matter if I do it beforehand or not. Let's rock this dungeon haha. If I can log in obviously

So is going to an Inn different than just sitting out in the open?

If you see the moon under the XP bar then it's the same. When folks were having trouble with servers, it was preferable to log out (or idle) out in the open so you didn't have to zone to start playing again.

Damn, the PC version seems optimized as heck. Looks light years better than PS3. I put everything at max, even 1920x1080, and I haven't seen it go under 25fps. That might seem low to you, but its fine for me. I even did a FATE without any issue, though I don't think to many people were around. One thing that bothers me, after an hour of playing my video card fan sounds like a rocket taking off, its going on 3 years old though. I checked the temp while running the game an it says 90c! Oh well, its time for it to die anyway.

Didn't affect gameplay at all though.

Thanks metric tons for the FC invite GAF leaders. So much. Furthermore, to any who answered me before I'll be hanging right next to Haukke's entrance if any of you is up for it!
